About the President
Krista L. Newkirk, J.D.
K
rista L. Newkirk became the University of Redlands’ 12th president in July 2021. Since coming to Redlands, she has been highly engaged, connecting with a wide range of constituents by meeting with and listening to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the University. During that time, she prioritized and led the charge to create a safe environment for the University’s return to in-person campus activities, oversaw the launch of the School of Business & Society, implemented and expanded the Redlands Promise marketing plan, initiated a collaborative strategic planning process, and completed the University’s comprehensive Forever Yours fundraising campaign which raised a record-breaking $207.2 million. Newkirk spent her formative years on a cattle ranch in Missouri before attending the University of Missouri’s Honor College on scholarship. She transferred to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary, where she served as editor-in-chief of the William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law. During her time in law school, she served as an intern at the Newport News Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. She worked with victims and witnesses, negotiated outcomes for the Domestic Violence Unit, and prosecuted cases. She worked for several years as an attorney in private practice and at a Fortune 300 company. Newkirk joined the Office of Legal Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2003, then became the Chief of Staff at UNC Charlotte in 2012. As Chief of Staff, she assisted the Chancellor in addressing the significant issues confronting the University. Newkirk assumed the presidency of Converse College in 2016. Under her leadership, Converse enhanced its financial, academic, and cultural strength. Apart from developing an innovative strategic plan, Converse launched its first doctoral degree program, expanded its master’s degree offerings, opened an extension campus, and transitioned from a single-gender institution to a coeducational, residential college. Under Newkirk’s charge, Converse changed its name to Converse University on July 1, 2021, and established the Converse College for Women to preserve its single-gender focus. In 2020, Newkirk was honored as one of the 50 Most Influential People and one of the 25 Women of Influence in the Upstate of South Carolina and was named a Woman of Achievement by the Spartanburg Herald-Journal in 2018. In 2010, she was selected as a Legal Elite by Business North Carolina. Newkirk and her husband, W. Lewis (Lew) Glenn III, have two sons.

Terry W. Hartle American Council on Education
T
erry W. Hartle has spent his professional career at the intersection of higher education and the federal government. For the last 30 years, he has worked as senior vice president, Government Relations and Public Affairs, at the American Council on Education (ACE) to organize and lead the higher education community’s efforts to establish and maintain government policies that will benefit colleges and universities and their students. Most recently, Hartle and his team designed and led the successful effort to secure federal government support to help institutions and their students during the pandemic. As a result, Congress provided $78 billion in COVID-19 relief for higher education—half of which went directly to students and their families. As an expert, knowledgeable, and passionate voice on behalf of colleges and universities, he testifies before Congress and is quoted frequently in the national and international media. He regularly publishes articles on the politics and policy of higher education. Before joining ACE, Hartle was the education staff director for the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, then chaired by the legendary Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. In this position, he played a central role in creating some of the public policies that still underpin federal aid to colleges and their students. He also was a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a research scientist at the Educational Testing Service. Hartle’s commitment to higher education is based on personal experience. He received a doctorate in public policy from George Washington University (GWU) and a master’s in public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history (summa cum laude) from Hiram College and spent part of his undergraduate years studying at the University of Cambridge. He has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Northeastern University and currently serves on the Smith College board of trustees. He has received the GWU President’s Medal, the Hiram College Alumni Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Hiram College Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Alice J. Mozley ’70 Life Trustee
A
lice J. Mozley ’70 earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and audiology from the University of Redlands. While a student, she participated in Alpha Theta Phi, University Choir, and Chapel Singers. Mozley credits her U of R years, including her Salzburg semester, with empowering her to seek new opportunities and become a lifelong learner. Following graduation, Mozley worked in several fields. She was among the only women at Magnavox Research Laboratories and considered her experience working on the development of GPS the most rewarding in her professional career. Mozley also worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space, where her projects included contract negotiations for the Hubble Space Telescope’s sunshield. After earning her MBA from Harvard Business School, she worked for McKinsey & Company as a consultant for aerospace, oil field equipment services, and high technology. In 1989, Mozley became vice president for planning and development at the Times Mirror Company. As the organization’s highest-ranking woman and one of the few female senior executives at a Fortune 100 company, her responsibilities for Times Mirror and its 25 operating companies included strategic and long-range planning, restructuring, investment, and financial analysis. She retired in 1993. Mozley has consistently served communities where she has lived and worked. Her service to the University began in 1992 when she was elected to the Board of Trustees. She chaired two Board committees (governance and advancement) and served on many others during her tenure. She also sat on search committees for two presidents and a dean. Mozley chaired the Salzburg Endowment Campaign and the recently completed Forever Yours campaign. In 2019, the Board of Trustees awarded her the Life Trustee distinction, and the University previously recognized her with the Distinguished Service Award and the Centennial Award. Having received scholarships as a Redlands student, Mozley established two endowed scholarships at her alma mater. She also endowed the director’s chair for the Salzburg program. Her service on numerous other boards includes Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles and Big Sisters of Los Angeles. She also was a former trustee for the Future Without Limits Foundation, which supported inner-city youth.

Jill Tiefenthaler, Ph.D. National Geographic Society
A
s chief executive officer at the National Geographic Society, Dr. Jill Tiefenthaler oversees the development and implementation of the society’s mission-driven work and programmatic agenda. She leads the global community of explorers—scientists, innovators, educators, and storytellers—in the mission to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world. Dr. Tiefenthaler sits on the society’s board of trustees and the board of National Geographic Partners. Before joining the National Geographic Society, Dr. Tiefenthaler spent nine years as the president of Colorado College. During this time, she helped set a new direction for the school, executed the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the college’s history, and developed and implemented a comprehensive strategic plan that expanded and cultivated an engaged and globally connected academic community. She developed a campus master plan, executed an alliance to make the world-class Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center part of the college, and led the college’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. She also drove significant increases in diversity among the faculty and student body and led the campus community in an external review of racism at the college that resulted in an antiracism implementation plan. Before leading Colorado College, Dr. Tiefenthaler was provost of Wake Forest University, where she redesigned the admissions process to include an SAT-optional policy, integrated the university’s undergraduate and graduate business schools, established the Institute for Public Engagement and The Humanities Institute, and implemented “Living Our Values,” a plan to strengthen residential life and campus vibrancy. Dr. Tiefenthaler began her academic career at Colgate University, where she was a full professor of economics before holding various administrative roles, including consultant to the president, associate dean of the faculty, founding director of the Upstate Institute, and chair of the department of economics. Originally from Iowa, Dr. Tiefenthaler grew up on a farm and worked for her family’s popcorn business before attending Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Duke University.

Montserrat Pineda ’22 B.A. Political Science
M
ontserrat Pineda ’22 is passionate about uplifting communities like the one she grew up in. A dedicated organizer from Long Beach, California, she chose to study political science at the University of Redlands while becoming increasingly involved in student organizations and her local community. While at Redlands, Pineda’s background as a first-generation college student from an immigrant family informed her commitment to uplifting and advocating for students with similar backgrounds. She championed other first-generation students through Students Together Empowering Peers, joined the social justice- and diversity-focused sisterhood Wadada Wa Rangi Wengi (WRW), increased voter awareness by cofounding Bulldogs Vote, and worked in the Study Away office. She currently serves as the policy and budget co-chair for the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities’ Independent California Colleges Advocate Program, a group that develops participants’ leadership, communication, and advocacy skills and deepens their knowledge of how policymaking affects education. Pineda remained dedicated to her local community by interning for Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice Mayor Rex Richardson, and U.S. Rep. Alan Lowenthal; working at the Long Beach Center for Economic Inclusion; and organizing food distribution drives and civic engagement activities in North Long Beach. Her commitment to justice, equity, leadership, and public service resulted in Pineda’s receipt of the Colwell Prize, the Jacob Green Memorial Prize, the Velma Hooper McCall Award, and the Warren Christopher Public Service Scholarship. She was also the inaugural recipient of the Vivanco-Daugherty Family Study Abroad Travel Grant, which supported her semester abroad in London. Pineda is proud to be the first in her family to receive a college diploma and views her experiences and accomplishments as a way to honor her family and community. In the future, she plans to attend graduate school with the goal of working in the policy field— ultimately continuing her work in her community and building on her Redlands education.

University Mascot
Adelaide “Addie” ’22 B.A. Philosophy and Leadership
A
delaide Victoria of Redlands (“Addie”) has served as the University’s first female mascot for the past four years, representing Redlands at athletics, studentled events, and major celebrations such as inauguration, homecoming, and commencement. Named for the founding first lady of the University and wife to the first President, Adelaide N. Field, Addie is the seventh live mascot to serve. She interned with her predecessor, Mascot Emeritus Thurber, at the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year, and was installed as the official mascot prior to a home basketball game on January 20, 2018. During her internship is when Addie realized Redlands was the place for her. Addie originally selected the encouragement of more rescue animal adoptions, especially of bulldogs, as her platform. She met and exceeded that goal with hundreds of community service hours, earned honors as a scholar-athlete, and scored high marks in philosophy, community relations, leadership, and education. After graduation, Addie will pursue master’s work—refining her roll, finessing her fetch, and swimming (soaking her paws in the pool). The University of Redlands congratulates Addie on her achievements and thanks her and her handler, Mary Littlejohn ‘03, ‘12, for their extraordinary service.

Academic Regalia Distinctive academic dress can be traced back to the universities of the Middle Ages. In the early centuries, the regalia was worn as daily garb, and the several parts had practical uses. Its use has been reserved for special ceremonial occasions in more recent centuries. Of the regalia’s three components, the hood is the most interesting. Originally, it had three uses: a head covering, a shoulder cape, and a bag in which alms could be collected. It is mentioned as early as 1480 in clerical literature. When large wigs were in vogue in England, the cape part of the hood was split in front and a narrow neckband inserted. The entire cape and hood were allowed to fall back as they do today, and the hood was never restored to its original style. Black academic robes are appropriate to all degrees and all institutions. However, graduates of some schools may elect to wear robe colors adopted by their alma mater: for example, Harvard crimson, Yale blue, Stanford cardinal. Red may be worn for ceremonial purposes, as by a president. Three black stripes on the sleeve denote a doctorate. Historical evidence suggests that the mortarboard originated with the 16th century Protestant reformer, John Calvin. At the Cathedral Church in Geneva, Calvin taught at a university building under construction; it did not have windows and was unfinished. Accordingly, he designed the hat for his teaching to protect his head from the pigeons that cohabited the buildings. Black tassels are correct for all degrees, but colored tassels also may be worn. Gold metallic tassels may be worn by persons with doctorates and by dignitaries. The Academic Mace The first dated record of the ceremonial academic mace goes back to 1385 at the University of Vienna. An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when the faculty is assembled in formal academic regalia. The first University of Redlands’ academic mace was presented on behalf of the city of Redlands by Mayor Jon Harrison during the October 20, 2006, convocation marking the start of the year-long centennial celebration. Several former mayors contributed to the fund for the mace and its case.
