POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Postgraduate education matters now more than ever. The contribution of postgraduates to the global economy cannot be overstated; they form the high-level skills base and knowledge economy that we need to invest in if we are to safeguard our financial, scientific, and intellectual futures. The contribution to the individual is even more profound. As well as the economic benefits – people with a postgraduate qualification can expect to earn £5,000 more a year on average (or £200,000 over a 40-year working life*) than someone only holding a Bachelor’s degree – a postgraduate degree can open a world of other opportunities. From specific careers that require specialist training – be that in engineering, education, academia, or healthcare – to highly competitive industries and businesses where an extra level of expertise can give you the edge, and, especially, to the * According to research undertaken by the Sutton Trust, 2013.

joy of learning, discovering, and understanding a subject you feel passionate about to the very deepest level, you will find that a postgraduate qualification will be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. I come from a working class background, and was told that ‘people like you don’t go to university.’ But I was lucky enough to have a teacher who gave me the confidence to succeed, and I was the first person in my family to go to university. That experience, for me, has fired a life-long focus on access to education. University is about achieving potential, not simply a reward for where you were born in life. We need to invest, both intellectually and financially, in the people who are generating new knowledge and teaching future generations, and the key way to do that is through postgraduate education.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Although the University celebrates its Diamond Jubilee in 2015, it traces its origins back to schools and colleges established in the nineteenth century. The Great Exhibition of 1851 spawned local Schools of Art and Science, which in 1868 were housed in the Albert Memorial Museum on Queen Street. Enthusiasm for extramural studies grew and, with support from the University of Cambridge, in 1893 the college became the Exeter Technical and University Extension College. In 1900 its official title was changed to the Royal Albert Memorial College. This in turn became the University College of the South West of England in 1922 and, finally, in 1955, the College received its Charter as the University of Exeter. Over the years since the University has moved from its city centre sites to the Streatham estate on the edge of the city, and there has been much development, including the incorporation of St Luke’s College of Education (1978) and Camborne School of Mines (1993), and the opening of the Penryn Campus in Cornwall (2004). Today the University consists of six Academic Colleges covering every aspect of the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, and has campuses at Penryn and Truro in Cornwall, and Streatham and St Luke’s in Exeter.

WHAT IS POSTGRADUATE STUDY? Postgraduate study is a level above undergraduate study, and consequently places serious academic demands on you as a student. The majority of taught postgraduate programmes at Exeter are Masters degrees. These normally combine advanced level tuition with the completion of a dissertation under the guidance of an individual member of staff. Many of our taught degrees follow a flexible modular format whereby you can choose from a range of specialist pathways or combine modules from a range of areas so that you can tailor your programme to your own interests.

MA, MSc, MRes We offer the Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and the Master of Research (MRes). The MRes degree, highly valued by employers, combines advanced subject-specific tuition with advanced level training in the methodological, analytic and research skills which are vital for the undertaking of further research. Also on offer are other specialist taught postgraduate degrees, such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master of Laws (LLM). Several of our subjects also offer the opportunity to study a Masters by Research, giving you the opportunity to gain a Masters degree by carrying out an independent research project in a specific subject under the supervision of an academic expert, rather than via scheduled tuition. For full details see our website: www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate

Part-time study and distance learning Most Masters programmes are 11-12 months full-time, with many programmes also available for parttime study and lasting roughly twice as long. Please note that international students are subject to visa regulations which normally prevent part-time study. Increasingly we offer distance-learning programmes which require little or no attendance at our campuses and enable you to study for a postgraduate qualification from Exeter, anywhere

in the world. Some programmes are delivered via ‘block teaching’; intensive 1-2 week bursts of on-campus lectures, seminars, and activities, which can fit more easily around your working life.

PgCert and PgDip Some of our Masters degrees can be taken in a shorter form, which omit the dissertation or some of the taught modules. Whereas a Masters programme represents 180 credits, Postgraduate Diplomas (120 credits) and Postgraduate Certificates (60 credits) covering only taught modules are also available in a number of subject areas. We also offer Graduate Diplomas; pre-Master’s programmes for international students which enhance your subject knowledge, study skills, and English ability.

Contact hours Contact hours vary between programmes: science courses can involve an almost 9-5 schedule of lectures, meetings, and lab sessions; whilst humanities degrees may feature only a few hours of timetabled classes a week, but will require you to undertake a substantial amount of reading and research outside of official teaching hours. If you are studying full-time, expect to be working approximately 40 hours per week towards your degree.

Research degrees This prospectus deals primarily with postgraduate taught programmes. The University also offers a full range of postgraduate research degrees. In addition to Masters by Research, you can also study for Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, and a number of professional doctorates (some of which are detailed in this prospectus). To find out more about studying for a research degree at the University of Exeter, please see our website: www.exeter.ac.uk/ postgraduate

The life of an MA student is busy. When I applied I was aware there would be a step up, but the levels of commitment demanded from you are pretty large. Not so large that they’re unmanageable, but you do have to dedicate a lot of your life to organisation and reading. That said, this has undoubtedly been the best six months of my life. I can’t wait to begin my dissertation in April. Tom Oberst, MA Classics and Ancient History

Athena SWAN Athena SWAN is a Charter that recognises the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). Within STEMM disciplines, women are typically under-represented at senior levels and this is ubiquitous across the Higher Education sector. The University is a proud member of the Athena SWAN Charter and holds a Bronze institutional award and two departmental Bronze awards: the University of Exeter Medical School and the combined disciplines of Biology and Geography at the Penryn Campus. All STEMM departments at Exeter are committed to the Athena SWAN Charter and seven departments made applications in April 2014: Engineering, Mathematics and

Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, Geography, and Sport and Health Sciences, with the University of Exeter Medical School making an application for Silver building on their existing Bronze award. Our Classics and Ancient History department has also recently been accepted on to the Gender Equality Charter Mark (GEM) trial, which is expected to roll out nationwide in October 2014. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT A postgraduate qualification can give you the inside edge in your career, no matter what stage of professional life you’re at. We offer a range of programmes specifically developed for working professionals, with particular specialisms in business, education, medicine and healthcare, clinical psychology, mining and engineering, law, film, security, and public administration. These programmes include research degrees, such as professional doctorates, and taught degrees, which are often delivered via block, blended, or distance learning to enable you to fit them around your working life.

By following one of our professional development programmes, you will benefit from the same high-quality education and research-led teaching as our traditional academic degrees, with increased industry-specific focus and access to extensive professional networks.  Anthrozoology; p88  B usiness and Management, including the One Planet MBA; p40  Clinical Psychology; p83

INSPIRING RESEARCH The University of Exeter is a vibrant centre for new ideas; a university free of internal boundaries. As a member of the Russell Group our research makes a difference across the world. We are leaders in cutting-edge science, engineering, mathematics, and medicine research, and have a world class reputation in the humanities and social sciences. We are constantly seeking new ways to engage with government, industry, and the community in order to build productive, sustainable partnerships and tackle some of the fundamental issues facing humankind. Our research income has more than doubled in the five years to 2013 and nearly 90 per cent of our research was internationally recognised at the most recent Research Assessment Exercise in 2008. We believe the future of research lies in breaking down traditional barriers between academic disciplines so the bigger problems of the 21st century can be considered from human as well as physical perspectives. We have a number of interdisciplinary research themes, which fit closely with international research priorities, from climate change to conflicts in the Middle East. Our key research areas:  C limate Change and Sustainable Futures  Environment and Sustainability  Extrasolar Planets  Food Security  Functional Materials  Global Uncertainties

 Identities and Beliefs  Medical Humanities  Science, Technology and Culture  Societal and Lifestyle Shifts  Systems Biology  Translational Medicine We provide a world class research environment, which we have enriched with more than £280 million investment into infrastructure and staff. This includes the new Environment and Sustainability Institute at our Penryn Campus in Cornwall, the Living Systems building currently under development at our Streatham Campus, and radically expanded laboratories, library facilities, and research spaces. This has revolutionised our campuses and made the University of Exeter a genuine destination university for the 21st century. We offer a broad portfolio of research opportunities, from Masters by Research degrees to MPhil programmes and PhD studentships via our fully-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships. To find out more about undertaking a research degree at the University of Exeter, please see www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/ research

The MSc provided excellent training across a range of conservation topics, in addition to analysis and writing peer-reviewed articles, and I have no doubt that the skills acquired during my Masters course have led me to the excellent position that I am in now. I thoroughly enjoyed my MSc course; not only did I learn skills that have helped my career, I also made friends for life and to top it off I got to spend a year in a beautiful part of the world. Tammy Davies, Research Assistant at the North of England Zoological Society (MSc Conservation and Biodiversity 2008)

Over the past few years, Procter & Gamble has begun to actively recruit at the University of Exeter. We have been impressed with the calibre of the University’s students, the willingness of the departments to partner with industry and the great enthusiasm of the students. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? There are essentially three separate costs to studying for a postgraduate degree:

TUITION FEES ACCOMMODATION LIVING COSTS Tuition fees

 books and course materials

Tuition fees vary from programme to programme, and are detailed in each of the subject entries at the back of this prospectus (see page 29 for the programme index).

 leisure, sport, and entertainment

Accommodation Outline accommodation costs are detailed on page 26.

Living costs Living costs are, to some extent, up to you. You will need to make choices about how you live and what your priorities are, but make sure you factor in:  food and toiletries  clothes and laundry  telephone charges  Visa fees (for international students)  C ouncil Tax (part-time students are eligible to pay)  t ravel costs; particularly if you are from overseas and want to visit home during vacations

 s undries; such as haircuts, prescriptions etc The National Union of Students estimates living costs outside of London to be approximately £12,000 per year, including accommodation. This figure is given as a guide only; depending on your priorities and how you budget it could vary significantly in either direction. You might find the Student Calculator useful in planning your budget – www.studentcalculator.org.uk It also has an international version – www.studentcalculator.org.uk/ international Student finance is different for everyone, and can be complicated. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Student Information Desk (SID) – sid@exeter.ac.uk

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING Postgraduates play a vital role in our research and student community – but we understand that funding your studies can be a major barrier to realising your ambitions. As such we make a number of scholarships available each year, and signpost a great deal more for potential students. During 2013/14, nearly 280 Masters students received some form of scholarship.

Who is eligible for a scholarship?

How should I search and apply for a scholarship?

Most scholarships are highly competitive and merit-based, so we recommend investigating options early as deadlines and eligibility vary. You will need at least a British Upper Second Class degree (2:1) or its international equivalent in order to be considered by any of the main funding bodies.

1. Visit the University’s funding search Search for scholarships relevant to you based on subject, degree level and fee status: www.exeter.ac.uk/funding/search Awards change so we recommend you check regularly. Additional useful sources of information can be found on the University’s website (see p94).

What scholarships are available?

2. Visit your country’s Ministry of Education and British Council websites Other potential scholarship providers:

The table opposite provides details of schemes confirmed at the time of going to print. Please see www.exeter.ac.uk/funding/ search for further information unless otherwise stated. We also support a number of external international scholarship schemes. For a comprehensive list, please see our web pages at www.exeter.ac.uk/ international/students/scholarships

 s pecialist education funding bodies such as Chevening and Fulbright  i nternational organisations such UNESCO and WHO  v oluntary organisations such as religious bodies and charities sometimes award small bursaries K students should read the  U information about postgraduate funding at www.direct.gov.uk

3. Follow the instructions Competition can be fierce. Make sure you complete your funding application(s) thoroughly and professionally and ensure you submit by the advertised deadlines, which can be up to a year before the start of your programme.

Alternative funding Many students are using innovative alternative measures to secure funding for their postgraduate degrees. These can include crowdfunding services such as www.studentfunder.com, www.indiegogo.com, or www.hubbub. net. It may be worth researching the options available via these services to see if they would suit your needs.

OUR CAMPUSES We offer almost 100 taught postgraduate programmes and numerous research degree opportunities across our stunning campuses. All campuses are easily accessible from London by train and European flights are available from Exeter, Newquay and Bristol airports.

EXETER Streatham Campus The Streatham Campus, the University’s largest site, is built around a country estate on the edge of the city centre and is readily acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in the country. A registered Botanic Garden, Streatham Campus is described by The Times as the “best-gardened campus in Britain”. The grounds feature many exotic trees and shrubs and stunning views across the city to the sea at Exmouth. Many students say they simply fell in love with the campus when they came to visit – its lakes, parkland, woodland and gardens make it a very special place that offers a safe and inspiring environment for study. www.exeter.ac.uk/visit/campuses/ streatham

St Luke’s Campus The St Luke’s Campus is 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre and just over a mile away from the Streatham Campus across the city. It is home to students in the Graduate School of Education, the School of Sport and Health Sciences, and the University of Exeter Medical School. Students have studied at St Luke’s for over 150 years and although much has changed over the years, the Campus has

retained a vibrant, collegiate atmosphere in which everyone soon gets to know each other. The Campus benefits from its own library and sports facilities, including an indoor heated swimming pool. Students at St Luke’s also take full advantage of all the academic, social and sporting facilities at the Streatham Campus which is a 25 minute walk or short bus ride away. www.exeter.ac.uk/visit/campuses/ stlukes

Living in Exeter Exeter is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the UK, with a high quality of life and a low crime rate. The city has something for everyone, whether your tastes are for exploring the city or enjoying the countryside; the world-famous Dartmoor National Park is only a 30 minute drive away, as are many of Devon’s beautiful beaches. The city itself is safe and studentfriendly, with a vibrant and fun culture and relaxed atmosphere. With a population of 120,000, there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, pubs and modern shops which sit alongside Exeter’s historic buildings such as the 14th century cathedral. Most new students find that Exeter is not a particularly expensive city in which to live.

The Students’ Guild The Students’ Guild, our award winning students’ union, is central to student life. The Guild is a dynamic, innovative organisation, existing to represent all students. Through Guild representation, the broad range of services, and exceptional activities, we are confident that you’ll have the best possible university experience at Exeter. In addition to sports clubs, the Guild supports more than 180 societies including those dedicated for postgraduates and international students.

Exeter is very easy to fall in love with. It has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, in one of the most beautiful counties in Britain. Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities

The location is beautiful. The Campus is surrounded and built within such incredible scenery and biodiversity. There’s a great, youthful, inspired and energetic vibe. Luke Meadows, MSc Conservation and Biodiversity, Penryn Campus

CORNWALL Penryn Campus The Penryn Campus is set in 100 acres of countryside, close to the waterside town of Falmouth, and boasts beautiful views over the Fal estuary. It offers peace and tranquillity as well as a lively student community. The Campus rates in the top ten nationally for student satisfaction: students say it’s a highly personal experience, intellectually stretching but great fun, where everyone quickly gets to know their peers. The Campus is shared with Falmouth University. The two institutions have separate teaching and research facilities, but students share accommodation and social spaces, including The Exchange, the Students’ Union, and campus sports facilities. This creates a vibrant mixture of students from science, engineering, humanities and arts backgrounds, both on campus and in the local area.

Living in Cornwall The Penryn and Truro campuses are in what many consider the UK’s most beautiful county. The Penryn Campus is just a few minutes’ walk from Penryn, home to a rapidly expanding collection of independent cafés, shops, galleries and restaurants, and a railway station with services to Falmouth and the city of Truro (10 and 20 minutes, respectively). Falmouth is a vibrant student town with a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and a lively café culture; its seven beaches, beautiful rivers and world-famous marina attract national and international visitors.

www.exeter.ac.uk/visit/campuses/ penryn

Truro is the most southerly city in England and close to some of the best beaches in the country. The Cathedral’s impressive gothic towers dominate the city skyline, with an exciting array of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities in the surrounding streets.

FXU (Students’ Union)

Our Truro Campus, located in the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, is the base for postgraduate students studying MSc Environment and Human Health (page 75). It is also the home of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH).

The University of Exeter has the highest level of student engagement in the UK, through clubs and societies, volunteering and representation. In Cornwall these activities are supported by Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU, which supports students from both universities). At the last count there were 98 sports clubs and societies which Cornwall Campuses students could join.

Accounting and Finance programmes at Exeter are well-established, research-led, and relevant for professional careers. The MSc Finance and Investment was the first finance Masters to be launched in the UK, 40 years ago, and we have developed a succession of innovative programmes ever since, including MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management. This was one of the first postgraduate degrees in the UK designed with the aim of combining a Masters programme with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) examinations. We have close associations with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) and the CFA® Institute, the global membership organisation that awards Chartered Financial Analyst designation. This means that Accounting and Finance at Exeter is positioned to align its standards with the very highest level of professional excellence. When you consider our rich research culture, with a busy itinerary of conferences, seminars, and visiting speakers, and the opportunity each year for students to attend a week-long trip to Europe visiting the European Commission in Brussels and the stock exchange and Deutsche Bank offices in Frankfurt, it makes Exeter one of the very best places to study Accounting and Finance. Scholarships are available for our Finance programmes; see p15.

I had never been to Falmouth, or the UK, but I read about the area and it sounded stunning. It definitely hasn’t disappointed. The lecturers really make the course; it’s a great experience to be able to learn from them. The Kenya field course is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had in my life. When you add up the brilliant lecturers, beautiful campus, and state-of-the-art facilities, you end up with a great educational experience. My time here has truly been special. I chose Britain first, based on my knowledge of how taught Masters programmes work here. I wanted a fast-paced, independent, learner-directed style of learning, along with seminar and tutorial-based instruction, and that is what I have received. I also realised that studying in the UK was actually cheaper than studying in the USA. I chose Exeter based on its reputation in the field among my colleagues in Japan, and because it is located in a less expensive part of Britain with relatively warm weather. This has paid off because the winter has been very snowy in most of the country, but not here! Jeremy Lovell Scott, MEd TESOL

MEd Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Intensive Summer Programme The only UK university to offer a face-toface summer intensive MEd TESOL, this programme has international recognition and is seen as an important professional qualification worldwide to enable TESOL teachers to enhance their career prospects. The diversity and yet specificity of the Engineering Management programme attracted me. Unlike similar programmes which are usually ‘one-plug’ in nature, Exeter provides all engineers the opportunity to build on their background through the core modules, and still provides a host of optional and additional modules, affording a good mix of solid engineering as well as broad management techniques. The South West is a beautiful place to live and the University of Exeter seems to be strategically placed right at the heart. There is a spirit of striving for excellence demonstrated by the University, which you experience and aspire to as a student here. Samuel Owusu, MSc Engineering and Management

Exeter has a number of leading researchers in my field, as well as an exceptional English department. Having studied as an undergraduate here I was accustomed to Exeter’s teaching and already loved the department, the University, and the campus. I also enjoyed the wide variety of other activities on offer at Exeter which are important to connect with while doing a Masters, I feel, as it can be quite an isolating experience otherwise. I enjoy the contemporary relevance and creativity of my area of study and the insight it allows me into recent history. Furthermore, I like the focus on popular culture in more recent literary work. The diverse natural environment of the campus location attracted me a lot. To me, this location is like a ‘natural laboratory’ for the students of the University. Forests, hills, coast, mines and different weather patterns will make anyone think about climate change and sustainability. If anyone wants to learn geography and environmental issues and prefers learning by doing, I think the University of Exeter should be their first choice. Md Arafat Alam, MSc Sustainable Development

Studying my MA at Exeter was a brilliant experience. In particular, the Global Security module allowed me to fully explore concepts I had encountered at undergraduate level but with a much deeper focus. During this module we were visited by interesting guests including an international development worker, a foreign office civil servant and a former general. These real-world insights were exceptionally helpful in connecting theory to practice, and served to provide exceptional depth to the Global Security module. Ben May, Politics Graduate

The academics leading the course were really keen for each student to pursue their individual research interests. As a result, I was able to investigate feminism in a range of contexts from the Middle East to the nanny economy. I also had an opportunity to study a law module, which helped me see how political philosophy has shaped our society.
