Many things have changed since 1898 and the founding of the technology institute which would eventually become the modern, forward-looking University of East London of today. But our desire to make a real difference to people’s lives through the work of our students and staff remains as strong as ever. We aim to be London’s leading university for civic engagement. As a student, you will be given the opportunity to deepen your learning experience by working on real-life projects that benefit communities locally and around the world. By helping others you’ll gain the skills, values and experience that will help you become a confident, stand-out individual – and highly attractive to employers. Civic engagement in action: Our acclaimed Legal Advice Centre is just one example of the work we’re doing. This is a busy law clinic in Stratford where our law students, supervised by qualified lawyers, provide free legal advice to local people. It’s a valuable community service for people seeking advice about issues such as employment rights, landlord and tenant disputes and welfare benefits. And, of course, it’s fantastic experience for our student lawyers. Some of our civic engagement projects include: —— UEL leaders are organising a week-long summer school on politics and activism for lower-income London teenagers. Young men and women will learn how they can engage in political issues and become involved in social and political change. ——

UEL students are going out into the local area to advise residents who are concerned about debt and other money problems. Students are also working with young pupils to set up a Savers Bank in a local school. The bank will allow families to make regular savings deposits.

We offer exciting opportunities for you to take your learning overseas, whether it’s examining the music industry in India, learning about the Great Depression in New York or studying business management in Seoul. In the past year, our students have made study trips to 28 countries, travelling as far afield as Ghana, Vietnam, Iran, Jamaica and India. Students have coached underprivileged children in Malaysia, trained in martial arts in China and provided sports therapy to runners in the Berlin Marathon.

‘Learning by doing’ is central to the way we teach. Whichever subject you choose to study, you’ll be able to apply your developing knowledge and expertise to real-life community projects – either as a course module or through volunteering. When it comes to learning on campus, we don’t believe education should be about cramming hundreds of students into a lecture theatre. That’s why we’re moving towards smaller class sizes and more individual ways of teaching. It’s about interactive rather than passive learning – acquiring knowledge through debate, exploration, research, critical thinking and practical work. We will review your application and, if you are successful, we will issue you with a conditional offer letter. Once all the offer conditions have been met, we’ll make you an unconditional offer. INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL The University of East London International Summer School programme is a unique opportunity for you to experience the excitement of London life, make new friends from all over the world and stretch your mind by studying one of our stimulating courses. The information we extract from data is an invaluable resource for business and wealth creation in general, and London is at the heart of this. With our Docklands campus so close to the data-centric industries of the City of London and Canary Wharf and the emerging technological and creative startups in east London, our course is ideally situated to benefit from this. Our course leaders have particular expertise in novel approaches to analysis, issues of data quality and information security. They are able to draw on a rich seam of research, having been being involved in ongoing research projects for organisations such as the London Borough of Newham Why us? UEL is at the forefront of this field. We set up the first MSc for Data Science in the UK in 2013 and since then other universities have followed our lead. Career opportunities for data scientists are rising exponentially. Our MSc offers advanced qualification that is increasingly sought after by companies and organisations worldwide. Armed with our MSc, you will be eligible to apply for membership of the Royal Statistical Society. In 2006, UEL was the first university in the UK to offer an MSc course of this kind. While this has put us ahead of many other institutions in the region, the digital forensics area is changing rapidly in terms of tools, investigation techniques, and methods available for both investigators and criminals, so the challenge has been to continuously develop and enhance the programme materials and structure to equip our students with the skills and knowledge demanded by the market. This course is your entry to a career in digital forensics investigation. You will have access to the latest tools available on the market, such as EnCase, FTK, and Mobile Forensics tools such as Oxygen, used extensively by law enforcement agencies across the world. The course fully integrates positive psychology and coaching psychology to create an innovative training programme for those promoting wellbeing.

This one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) course bridges the gap between BSc Psychology and doctoral-level training.

There is a growing recognition within the world’s coaching and positive psychology community that such integration is an important step forward, providing clients with a more openminded approach to their mental health. From the point of view of positive psychology, the course will have a strong foundation in cutting-edge theory and research relating to wellbeing. The coaching element will feature advanced training in working with clients and groups in professional capacities.

It is aimed at those who have had at least some experience in psychology services who want to go on to train as a researcher, a therapist, or a clinical, counselling or educational psychologist. You need not have a first degree in Psychology but your training and experience must be in a related area and demonstrate a suitable career trajectory. Getting onto a professional doctorate course is a highly competitive business but this MSc in a well-established, highly-regarded teaching environment could help give you the edge you need.
