ADOLF

THE JOURNEY OF JEANNIE DEANS

Guy Masterson — Theatre Tours International in association with Pip Utton Theatre Company (UK)

Rowan Tree Theatre Company 300 years since the Act of Union between England and Scotland, this powerful new play by Judy Steel, adapted from Walter Scott’s The Heart of Midlothian, has remarkable contemporary resonance. Political and private issues collide dramatically in post-Union Edinburgh; as the city erupts into riots, can Jeannie save her sister from execution?

The Führer’s bunker, Berlin 1945, the air is thick with betrayal as Hitler awaits its inevitable collapse... He justifies his leadership to us, his loyal disciples — which has taken the world to the brink of catastrophe. We’re in the presence of an utterly compelling idealist being helplessly drawn in to his warped logic... Pip Utton delivers an acute anatomy of fascism; its ideological justifications, its poisoned utopias... This is live theatre at its best; powerful, challenging, divisive, illustrative, educational. Utterly provocative and totally necessary. A stunning lesson from history. ‘Terrifying, searing, transfixing.’ ★★★★★ The Scotsman ‘An extremely clever warning. Truly powerful theatre.’ ★★★★★ The Herald

CONFLICT ZONE Conflict Zone Theatre

As an elderly lady Marlene Dietrich spends time with a young psychoanalyst reminiscing about episodes from her life. Famous as a celluloid femme-fatale on both sides of the Atlantic she also had deeply held private views on wartime politics, the interpretation of patriotism and the so-called ‘freedom’ of Hollywood. This musical drama is loosely based on her biography The Alphabet Of My Life and digs deep into her thoughts on her sensational image, sex and politics.

Glasgay!

Home Truths A funny and touching journey of the life of Britain’s best loved broadcaster John Peel as he transforms from a well-spoken idealistic hippy into a down-toearth DJ — an ordinary bloke with an extraordinary love for music.

A rare chance to see Alan Bennett’s legendary 80s monologues. Conjure up five unforgettable characters, trapped behind a net curtained world, they combine bleak, wry comedy and outright tragedy. Talking Heads provides a rare and compassionate insight. ‘Impeccable... outstanding, savagely witty and poignant.’ ★★★★ The Scotsman ‘Sad little tales with slow-burning semantic arsenic... simple, but spellbinding.’ The Herald Featuring delusional actress Lesley in Her Big Chance, feisty old Doris in A Cream Cracker Under the Settee; disillusioned vicar’s wife Susan in A Bed Among the Lentils; devoted son Graham in A Chip in the Sugar and curtain twitching Irene in A Lady of Letters. SPECIAL Fecund Theatre True love, consenting adults, violent sex. An explosive and challenging love story exploring S&M sex. Adults Only. Fecund are back!

The play is based on the memoirs of the world’s greatest dancer, written only months before his total psychological deterioration. This lavish production by Poland’s leading repertory theatre exposes the complexity of the great artist’s professional and emotional world. The story reveals Nijinsky’s artistic passion, which helped him break the rules of classical dance and fight with the psychosis that affected more than half his life. Mental destruction prematurely ended a fantastic career at the peak of its brilliance, recognition and fame.

FRANCE

In the great tradition of transformation cabaret, the Chicos Mambo examine in fine detail the human traits and failings of that shown on stage. Sketched with biting affection, dance remains the star: with a novel take on Swan Lake, contemporary ‘tics’ get eaten away at and both Ballroom and Ice Dance are parodied in a jubilatory manner. Some pumped up gymnasts, a frenzied Esther Williams, and even the Little Mermaid are held up for closer inspection. So there you have it, a deliciously good natured show aimed at all those fed up with the over-intellectualisation of dance and its inherent disputes. ‘Chicos Mambo are to music-hall follies what Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream is to theatre, a comical illusion.’ Figaroscope ‘Dancing geniuses, irreverent performers and the master of all styles.’ Danser ‘The show drags us into priceless fun... go discover them!’ Pariscope fringe for a

THE LESSON

SUPER PATRIOTS AND MORONS PREGNANT WITH EMOTION

Icarus Theatre Collective

At the comedy’s opening we find a mild-mannered, scatty scholar teaching his bright-eyed bonne-élève student 1+1=2. When the innocent pupil begins to displease the tutor, the pedagogue turns on her, becoming a bullying tyrant, a ferocious animal bent on her destruction. Written by Eugène Ionesco, translated by Donald Watson. fringe for a

Potato Theatre

A gothic tale inspired by the life of 18th century celebrity Mary Robinson, high-flying courtesan and acclaimed poet, shunned by respectable society. It’s League of Gentlemen does Liaisons Dangereuses — ripped corsets, surreal gothic characters, saucy song and dance numbers.

By Van Badham and Jonny Berliner. Bob and Fanny Comfort sing the fun into fundamentalism in this satirical celebration of Britain’s new megachurch televangelists. Remember: PRAISE PAYS! ‘The most incendiary politics on the Fringe.’ Independent ‘So much bite it needs a muzzle.’ Time Out

JIMMY TINGLE FOR PRESIDENT

USA

Comedian and 60 Minutes commentator Jimmy Tingle takes on the status quo of American politics with fresh, irreverent and insightful wit as he tosses his hat into the democratic frenzy of the 2008 American Presidential campaign.

Three clowns attempt to fulfill the wish of a sick little girl to see snow for the first time. Problem is, they haven’t seen snow either! What can they do? Using fun, bubbles, magic and audience participation, they unlock the secret of how to make snow.
