AE 308X Trip Leadership

This course is designed for students with appropriate qualifications to arrange, under the supervision of a faculty member, to assist i n l eading t rips. Typically, students w ork as assistant i nstructors i n courses such as Wilderness C amping an d Travel, Rockclimbing, Whitewater Canoeing and others. In t his course s tudents may work with f aculty to plan and carry out an extended e xpedition involving out door pursuits such as backpacking, pad dling, m ountaineering, et c., t hroughout t he world. Students will be r equired t o c omplete an app lication process to join the expedition team. Faculty and students will meet as needed, to plan and implement the expedition. This course may be used to fulfill the Leadership Skills component of the Adventure Education Leadership program. This course i s de signed t o ex amine t he t heories, p rinciples, and pr actices o f l eadership i n a w ilderness environment. E xperience from the pre-course trip and from personal trip leading experience is used as a basis for understanding leadership theory. Students will be expected to be involved in leading trips, or equivalent experience. The course will begin with a 6–10 day experience in August. Students w ill l earn t he characteristics o f certain di sabilities and w ill ex amine v arious therapeutic wilderness pr ograms de veloped to work with specific groups, such as people who have been abused, who have post traumatic stress disorder, or who are patients in psychiatric hospitals. The course will include a section on professional ethics. Credits: 3 Prerequisites: PY 2113, AE 2184

AE 4223 Counseling Theories for Wilderness Programming

This course presents the b asic issues of counseling in a wilderness setting with its limitations and potentials. Students will be introduced t o t herapeutic c ounseling models: R eality Therapy, P erson-Centered Therapy, and a t rans-theoretical m odel f or wilderness-based c ounseling. T he c ourse is a c ombination of t heory, application an d practice in which t he s tudents will be introduced to the philosophy and concepts of counseling in a wilderness setting as well as developing skills in each of the specific models mentioned above. This course will include a section on professional ethics in counseling. Credits: 3 Prerequisites: PY 1003 or PY 1013

AE 4403 Theoretical Perspectives of Outdoor Adventure Recreation and Education

This course covers topics including, but not limited to, the theory, history or philosophy of experiential education, of challenge or adv enture educ ation, of r ecreation and out door adv enture r ecreation; t he pr ofessionalism o f out door adv enture recreation/education; p sychological/sociological a spects o f out door recreation r esearch i ssues and c urrent i ssues i n t he profession. Students ar e expected ea ch w eek to r ead ar ticles or b ook chapters, an d t o be a ble to d iscuss the topics. Students will also be expected to write expository or analysis/synthesis papers of varying lengths and perhaps to give an oral presentation. Students may be asked to make a pr esentation at, or to attend, a professional c onference or other pr ofessional meeting.
