Agriculture, Food, and Sustainability Bachelor of Science

Program Sheet

This Bachelor of Science program of study is designed to prepare students for future study and careers in the growing fields of sustainable agriculture and food systems. The approach is interdisciplinary and experiential, drawing on several disciplines t hat i ntersect i n t he field of a griculture and food s ystems study, including bi ology, ecology, ec onomics, critical social sciences, and history, as well as applied sciences such as horticulture, livestock management, and marketing. The program has a significant field and experiential component, utilizing the college‘s farm and garden resources as well as those of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), whose headquarters are in Unity. Field studies will also take place on MOFGA member farms in the region and around the state of Maine. Graduates of t he pr ogram m ay c hoose c areers i n s ustainable c rop pr oduction, s ustainable l ivestock pr oduction, f ood business en terprises, and nonprofit adv ocacy and m anagement i n ar eas s uch as food and agriculture pol icy, c ommunity agriculture, food security, farmland preservation, food and health, and community development.
