United Way’s strength is convening partners and experts to encourage a unified approach to complex community issues and then creating solutions for the gaps in service. Together, through United Way, the contributions of thousands of individual donors become a force for change in the community. United Way Endowment Every day, United Way donors create opportunities and inspire hope for a better tomorrow. You can continue your impact in many lives that follow your own, by leaving a charitable bequest and making a legacy gift to United Way of Brevard’s Endowment Fund. There are many different ways to leave a legacy. The most common are outright gifts, such as cash or a check, which United Way receives right away. Some planned gifts are revocable, so you can change your plans if your situation changes. Others are irrevocable and offer immediate tax benefits. In any case, planned gifts provide important benefits to the giver as well as United Way. Just think of what you want your philanthropy to accomplish and there’s probably a way to do it! Tocqueville Society “ I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare; and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another.”

The Tocqueville Society® is designed to involve and deepen the understanding, commitment, and support of United Way’s most generous and community-minded investors. The name was chosen because of Alexis de Tocqueville’s admiration for the spirit of voluntary association and effort for the common good, a spirit he had observed in America and about which he wrote enthusiastically. Only 26 years old when he came to America in 1831, Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville traveled all over the young nation. Though he only spent nine months in the United States, he gleaned an insightful view of American Society. His observations, readings, and discussions with eminent Americans formed the basis of ‘Democracy in America,’ a detailed study of American society and politics published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America’s heart.

2014-2016 TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY CO-CHAIRS As co-chairs, Tony and Sara Catanese have set the strategic direction for our Tocqueville Society and strengthened the personal network of relationships among our Tocqueville members during their term. Both are especially passionate about our early grade reading strategic initiative.

Tocqueville Society members rocked to the music performed by TWITCHY during an event held at the Gleason Auditorium on the campus of Florida Tech this past fall. Hosted by Tony and Sara, it was an opportunity to celebrate our society members and their transformative capacity. Tony was a hit on the traditional drums as well as bongos.

Tocqueville Society Three elements of democracy which Tocqueville so admired in American society were liberty, equality, and the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor.
