Dear Friends, 2015 marked the 90th Anniversary of the United Way of Central Missouri; ninety years of caring in our community; nine decades of working together to instill hope for a better tomorrow. As we celebrate this milestone, we look back to see a journey entwined with the history of this great community. Our story dates back to 1925 when Sam Baker was the incoming Governor of Missouri, prohibition was in full swing, a gallon of gas was 20 cents, and you could go to a movie for 25 cents. But some things were not much different than today….. families were homeless due to natural disasters or financial struggles, children were hungry, and there were people in crisis who needed the help of their neighbors. The United Way of Central Missouri was born to build a network of agencies to help people get the in-depth services that provide holistic support for their unique needs--because difficult life situations are rarely resolved by meeting a single need. No two people, families or neighborhoods are alike, and the issues are complex. 2015 not only marked the celebration of our 90-year journey of caring; we also welcomed two new partner agencies into the United Way of Central Missouri family—Capital City Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association. Now the United Way net is being cast wider and deeper so even more people can be helped through your United Way contribution. Additionally, in an effort to meet current unmet needs in the community, United Way of Central Missouri awarded fifteen health and human service organizations just over $116,000 in one-time grants; as well as $1,310,000 in funding for our partner agencies. All of this was made possible due to the generous support of our caring community which resulted in the success of our most recent community campaign. In 2015, our community pledged over $1.85 million dollars to exceed our $1.8 million goal. To our partners, donors, advocates and volunteers, we extend our deepest appreciation for what you do. With your help we will make sure every day is better than the day before—you are hope for a better tomorrow. As we conclude the 90th Anniversary year, let’s use the momentum, optimism, the memories and the lessons of the past to guide us through the next 90 years.

Celebrating 90 Years of Caring In 1887 in Denver, Colorado, a group of 5 community leaders envisioned a more hopeful future for every neighbor, achieved by working together for the common good. In this pioneering town, a movement was born across the nation. In 1925 in central Missouri, our movement began--built on optimism, dedication, and the volunteer spirit; a spirit that inspires hope and creates opportunities for a better tomorrow. 90 Years of Caring later, the United Way of Central Missouri continues to be a strong community collaborator; bringing agencies, people and resources together to make our community stronger and the best it can be. To all of those who have given, advocated and volunteered, who champion the cause, we say THANK YOU. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED!

Lakaisha McCaleb

Lakaisha McCaleb is a Dreams to Reality volunteer, but she first came through the doors as a client. “I am what I am today because of Dreams to Reality. They allowed me to be me as far as helping ‘dress’ me, but they also gave me that hope back that was lost,” says Lakaisha. Dreams to Reality, a United Way of Central Missouri partner agency, helps low-income women meet their employment goals by outfitting them for success. Dreams to Reality staff helped change the trajectory of Lakaisha’s life, and in turn, Lakaisha altered theirs. “She gave us the

reality that the people we serve can play a bigger role in the community,” says Liz Lehmen, Dreams to Reality Board President. With the support of United Way of Central Missouri, Dreams to Reality truly transforms women’s lives. “United Way and Dreams to Reality mean the world to me. Our community is so giving, and I am so grateful,” says Lakaisha.

Elijah Mayfield

Elijah Mayfield was born with Down Syndrome, something his parents learned minutes after he was born. At four months, Elijah was working with an occupational therapist, and at six months, a speech therapist through the Special Learning Center. “I can’t imagine what our lives would have been like without the Special Learning Center, not only for Elijah, but for us as parents as well. Our reality was definitely changed for the better by the Special Learning Center, and in turn, the United Way of Central Missouri,” says Elijah’s dad, Todd Mayfield. Elijah now leads a successful, rewarding SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital; and is a Sports Manager at Helias Catholic High School and busser and greeter at Paddy Malone’s Irish Pub. “I want to thank the Special Learning Center. They taught me how to walk, how to talk, and how to crawl,” says Elijah. UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

DAYS OF CARING

Days of Caring Days of Caring is an opportunity for communities to come together and address the issues that matter most to them. For some, it’s stuffing backpacks full of books to encourage reading and improve early literacy. For others, it’s planting community gardens to foster civic pride and promote affordable, healthy eating. In that sense, Days of Caring mirrors the work that United Way does year-round: empowering people to affect positive change in their own backyards, and throughout central Missouri. Each year as part of the United Way campaign, individuals in our community come together to harness the true spirit of volunteerism. In 2015, United Way of Central Missouri mobilized 250 volunteers to provide service to nineteen different agencies. Sixteen organizations participated and provided their employees and students the opportunity to reach out a hand to one to influence the condition of all.

Early Childhood Initiative United Way of Central Missouri has supported this initiative since 2007 to promote early childhood programs in the Central Missouri area by providing Born Learning materials to low-income families as an introduction to early learning, as well as identifying gaps in services in early childhood in our community. 2015 marked the second year of a three-year program to implement Early Childhood-Positive Behavioral Support (EC-PBS) in nine area childcare centers. EC-PBS is a validated, function-based model to Members of United Way of Central Missouri Early Childhood Advisory Council:

Currently, Jefferson City Public Schools, Southwest Early Childhood Center, Head Start, and some area parochial schools use Positive Behavioral Support.

FamilyWize essentially acts like a huge consumer group buying service for the uninsured and underinsured. The discounts and savings on medications are provided voluntarily by the more than 61,000 participating pharmacies that have agreed to provide prices similar to what they give large insurance companies and employers. People are able to fill more of their prescriptions because of the savings. Total savings in 2015 in our service area was more than $84,850.

Our Agencies & Programs Every day, United Way of Central Missouri’s partner agencies are dedicated to improving the lives of those they serve--whether it’s a child, senior, family, or individual with disabilities. Instead of focusing on one single issue, the United Way network provides holistic support and strengthens our community by helping youth succeed, promoting self-sufficiency, improving health, responding to crisis, supporting the aging, and strengthening and supporting families.

For the first time since 2008, United Way of Central Missouri welcomed 2 new partner agencies. Capital City CASA trains dedicated volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children that are in the court system through no fault of their own. Central Missouri Foster Care & Adoption Association educates, provides crisis response, and supports and advocates for foster and adoptive children, youth and families in Central Missouri.

Our Campaign Our Changing Reality campaign theme resonated with our community because it perfectly illustrates the work of the United Way, where we strive to change reality for the hungry, the sick, the hurt, the poor, the elderly, the scared, the illiterate, the homeless. Campaign Co-Chairs Barb Prasad and Matt Tollerton, the Campaign Leadership Team, the Marketing Team and Campaign Coordinators within each workplace embraced this theme to ensure this was one of the most successful campaigns in United Way of Central Missouri history. Through the efforts of our entire community, the United Way of Central Missouri is able to transform despair into hope, fear into courage, obstacles into opportunities, and poverty into promise.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors and is a separate 501(c)(3) with the same high standards of fiscal accountability and good stewardship as the United Way of Central Missouri. The Foundation was established in 2003 to build a permanent, sustainable avenue of support for the United Way through planned giving.
