WO RS H IP Parson to Person:

Into the Interim Welcome Rev. Justin Osterman! or Asalema. Schneeya walek? La bes? (Peace. What’s with you? Going well?), to greet you in Tunisian Arabic. One great joy in meeting you through your website (RevJustinOsterman.com) has been learning that Arabic, and specifically Tunisian Arabic, was a tool shaped in you, as it was in me, in youthful service to our nation (and to peace). Mr.g. by MIT physicist Alan Lightman - you read and liked it too, I see. That's another great joy in meeting you. As you say "this novel should be read by militant atheistic scientists, fundamentalist religious literalists, and pretty much everyone in between." And such a good idea to post your "Reading List" for church members to see what's feeding your heart and mind in each passing season. (RevJustinOsterman.com/Reading). I may well steal this idea from you (and may even forget to give you credit for it one day). A third great joy is seeing you're a "Meadville Man" a graduate of our UU seminary in Chicago. Your UU roots may be more Eastern (nearer "the pond" and across it), and so surely have been your recent ministries. But your formation at the wellspring of (Mid)-western UUism insures that you'll intuit and connect with the natural spirit of Lincoln liberal religion as but your newest home. (Lincoln friends, hear me, as a long-time Meadville Teaching Pastor: Osterman fits. This WILL work, and well!) And a fourth joy, of course, is seeing you're an experienced Interim Minister. You've been 'round this course before: New London Connecticut. 1999-2000. As you say, they've done very well thereafter. It augers well for Lincoln's future here, in your wake. So as I take my own initial plunge into Interim Ministry (in a place not far from yours, it appears), I'll be lurking on our website here, taking tips, trying to emulate your success.

I surely hope our Lincolnites will make their own introductions with you, Rev. Osterman, through your website. And for you perhaps, it now occurs to me, there might some little joy in peeking at another not-dissimilar website: www.RevFritzHudson.com. What I hope you'd see there is its named subject, not as a person, a minister, but rather as a lens. What's refracted through my image there is what's really here in Lincoln: a 300+ person shared ministry. Whatever is good, or strong, or inspiring shining through there: that's the image of what the Unitarian Universalists of Lincoln, Nebraska can give and can mean to a minister. And now, very soon, it will be all yours. Welcome to our ministry ! PS. I know you share my thanks and congratulations to those made this wonderful match: Our Trustee Ministerial Transition Task Force: Cindy Maly (chair), Leslie Ryan, Liz BonneyHeermann, David Williams, Charles Coley, Curt Donaldson, with Management Team partners: Bob Haack, Christine Starr Davis & Linda Hellerich.

WO RS H IP A RTS N EWS One-Hour Choir Unitarians of all ages are invited to be part of The One-Hour Choir at the Flower Communion service on June 1. Just arrive at 8:55 or so and stake out a seat with your family in the sanctuary. The rehearsal of our two songs will start right at 9:00. We’ll take a short break and then proudly sing at the service. Ability to read music, or even words, is NOT required because we’ll learn the songs mainly by repetition.

Our other activities included signing a giant wooden chalice created by Mandy Bonney-Heermann. Photos will be attached to the other side of this chalice and given to Fritz as a gift. The children and youth also made flowers from fancy paper which will be given to Fritz during our Flower Service. This was a fun ingathering and I hope it helped the group feel some closure for when Fritz leaves our church home. In Peace, Faith and Love, Chelsea Krafka

EV ENTS A C TIV ITIES NEWS & & ANNOUNCEMENTS Register now for Drama Club! "At Home With Ourselves" - a service about INDIVIDUALITY Registration is still open for this year’s Drama Club which will rehearse June 23- 27 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at our temporary church location, 1333 N. 33rd St. All kids in grades K - 8 are invited to participate. Evelyn Weymouth and Julie Enersen have sketched out a fun-filled service about individuality entitled “At Home With Ourselves." The students will work for five mornings and then present the service on Sunday, June 29 at the 10:00AM service. Grades K - 5

Students who are currently in Kdg through 5th grade will present a play based on the story “Tacky the Penquin.” There will be opportunities for both speaking and nonspeaking parts as the kids tell the story of penguins who march to the beat of a different drummer. Just imagine all of the kids marching up and down those aisles at the church before returning to their “iceberg” at the front of the sanctuary!

There is no registration fee for church families (that is, those who have shared time and/or money with the church.) The only cost is $10 per K-5 child for the tuxedo t-shirt which they will wear as their costume. Scholarships are available for those who need assistance. You can still register your child by sending his/her name & current grade level to Julie Enersen at worshiparts@unitarianlincoln.org. If you know of non-church families who would enjoy this sort of opportunity, please pass along the information. We will be charging $50 for the first child in a family and $20 for each additional student. We had asked parents to let us know by May 1 if their family was planning to participate in the Drama Club. We had enough people say “YES” that we are a “go.” And it’s not too late to sign your child up. Just drop Julie Enersen an email at worshiparts@unitarianlincoln.org.

Grades 6 - 8

The middle school students will have numerous responsibilities in the service. They will serve as our worship leaders, read “The Big Orange Splot” as the day’s story, and be in charge of the Joys and Concerns. Since we have so many musically talented teens, I’m also hoping we can get them to provide some of the special music. How can we do a service about individuality without using the song “I Gotta Be Me”?

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS All Church Potluck & Ice Cream Social

Save the dates: Seven Principles

Sunday, June 1 • 11:30AM • Fellowship Hall/Grounds

Sundays - June 8, 15, & 29

Holding this event on Flower Communion Sunday has become a tradition in recent years and this year there will be special significance to it as we say good bye to Fritz and Ginny. Although they won’t be leaving town until later in the summer it is likely to be the last “all congregation” event where we will gather as a church family to celebrate the end of this church year and Fritz’s ministry with us. If you have special words of advice or friendship as they prepare to leave us now would be the time to express it.

The Seven Principles in Word and Worship

The event is sponsored by the Newcomer Committee and ALL are invited to participate. We will have baskets available for cards and other expressions of farewell or good wishes. We look forward to seeing you there! Because this is the usual potluck as well as farewell please do bring your own table service, we’ll have drinks available. ***A note to parents – This year the potluck will be on the lawn as well as in Fellowship Hall so if you are allowing your children to play on the lawn please be prepared to stay with them or keep an eye on them. 33rd St is a heavily trafficked street and we do not want any accidents. It is the parent’s responsibility to watch out for their own children. Pre-school children may be left in the care of childcare providers in the nursery on the first floor.

Singles – come one come all! You may know that a group of people are making an effort to start a Singles Group for people “west of 50”. There is a small band of people interested in getting together to attend a variety of social events. This is NOT a dating service, but a place for friends to gather and enjoy activities together. If you would like to know more about the formation of the Single “West of 50’s” group please speak to Barb Brant bbrant@yahoo.com, Mary Ann Meisner mm00435@windstream.net, Connie Benjamin conniesue.benjamin@gmail.com, or Gary Colvin gcolvin2166@gmail.com

Edited by Ellen Brandenburg

This book discussion is open to everyone interested in exploring the Seven Principles that are part of glue that holds us together as a faith. In this book each Principle is discussed by a different minister telling their own story about what that particular Principle means to them. We will read the book, and then discuss how we might see each principle working in our own lives. We’ll begin with three weeks and 7 Principles, and expand out from there if we need to. The dates are June 8, 15, 29. We’ll discuss possible dates during the class if we need more time to explore these words of wisdom. The class will be held after church at 11:30 a.m. in the Multi-purpose room on the first floor. Contact Karen Dienstbier at membership@unitarianlincoln.org for more information or to register for the class.

TRANSITION TEAM The Board of Trustees is looking to appoint a Transition Team for the incoming Interim Minister consisting of five to seven members who are widely known and respected and well acquainted with the congregation's history. Their role is to provide the Interim Minister with insight, organizational and facilitative talent, and willing hands as the ministry proceeds. Because the Transition Team is an interim minister's "brain trust," it would be inappropriate for any member of the Team to be in a relationship with a current member of the BOT. If you are interested please email Jean in the church office admin@unitarianlincoln.org

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Capital Campaign Report by Mary Sommermeyer, Capital Campaign Treasurer

The capital campaign fund balance is $1,367,674. Expenses paid so far amount to $441,098, which includes a number of pre-groundbreaking charges. Over 58% of the amount pledged during the capital campaign has been paid. Of the remaining $439,145, around $50,000 probably won’t be paid due to pledgers moving or leaving the church or changed financial situations. Pledge payments and other donations made now to the capital campaign fund will help to limit the eventual amount owed this fall when expenses use up the funds in the bank and the church needs to use its line of credit with Union Bank (and start incurring interest) to pay the balance due pending receipt of outstanding pledges and amounts from other fundraising.

The church still has two donated spaces in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery for sale. When sold, the proceeds will go the capital campaign fund. The spaces are in an area with mature trees. One is next to a bench easement area where a memorial bench or a bench with cremation remains could be placed. (The easement would need to be purchased separately from Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.) We prefer to sell both spaces to one purchaser but will consider separate offers. Current value is $1900 for each space; we are asking $1000 per space (or best offer) plus the purchaser would pay the $250 transfer fee (which LMFH will waive if you purchase something else the same day, for example, the bench easement, a funeral service, or a headstone). If you could help the capital campaign by purchasing one or both spaces, contact me at 402-489-8213 or sommerlaw@neb.rr.com.

Donations specifically for installation of solar panels have been made totaling $25,750. Members have loaned the church $310,000. Some loans are for three years at 2.5% interest; others are for five years at 3%. More loans are expected later in the year up to the $355,000 authorized by the congregation in June 2013. Interest payments on the member loans are due by the end of December each year. Those payments, along with interest on the closing costs for the Union Bank loan/line, will be made from payments of mortgage pledges made by members in May 2013. While the mortgage pledges might be sufficient to make most of the interest payments, more funds will eventually be needed to cover the mortgage principal. For precise figures and more details, go to the “Members Only” section of the church website. Sales of the church fundraiser cookbook are $55 short of covering publication costs so the capital campaign has not gained any funds from that source.

NOTES FROM THE CHURCH OFFICE: • Jean will be out of the office to General Assembly June 23 - 30. Office Posse members will be covering any hours that are not covered by Christina Strong. Please rely on email for communication. • After Memorial Day - 33rd Street will be closed from P St to W St. Plan on using Holdrege rather than Vine Street. • Summer hours begin on June 15. The office is open 9 to 1 Sunday and 9 to 1 Tues - Fri until August 14. • We have more Lost and Found items on the top of the North coat rack inside the West Door (scarves, hats, gloves, cups, umbrellas)
