Welcome Gretchen Offered by Molly Klocksin, Board Trustee

Rev. Dr. Gretchen Woods insists she didn’t choose to become an interim minister to Unitarian Universalist congregations. Instead, the longtime settled minister believes interim ministry chose her. “Interim ministry is a calling,” explained Dr. Woods, our congregation’s new interim minister for the next two years. Over the summer, she will move here from Lexington, KY, where she has been interim minister at the Unitarian Church of Lexington. Dr. Woods considers herself a collaborator and a professional resource for the congregation. “I’m excited to see what we can do together in shared ministry,” she said. To introduce herself to the full congregation, Dr. Woods will give her first sermon on Sunday, Aug. 2, “Who Am I and Why Am I Here?” On Sunday, Aug. 16, she will lead our traditional Ingathering/ Water Communion. On Sept. 13, Dr. Woods will facilitate a listening session, “Getting to Know Your – Telling Your

Stories,” for her to hear from congregants about our congregation, and for congregants to hear from each other. Dr. Woods earned a B.S. in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA; an M.A. in Religious Studies from John Carroll University, University Heights, OH; and a D.M. (Doctor of Ministry), focusing upon building healthy spiritual communities, from Northwest Theological Union (now the Institute for Ecumenical Studies of Seattle University) in Seattle, WA. Previously, Dr. Woods was an interim minister at All Souls Unitarian Church in Indianapolis, IN. Her settled ministries were at the UU Fellowship of Corvallis, OR; the UU Church of Reston, VA; and the Kitsap UU Fellowship in Bremerton, WA. In her free time, Dr. Woods enjoys making music, writing poetry and reading science fiction. Dr. Woods and her spouse, Judy Finholm, share six children, three grandchildren, and two rescued Pound Puppies. For more about Dr. Woods, visit her website, www.revgwoods.net.

Worship Leaders: Amy Miller Speakers: Dr. Frank Edler Music: Bill Carpenter Share the Care: Religious Growth & Learning (RGL) Committee

A Peacemaking Prayer The history is complex, the politics are intense, the fear and anger are overwhelming, and the future is unclear. But glimpses of a hopeful vision will not be bombed into oblivion by anyone. In prayer, we call to mind the peacemakers. Neighbors of differing faiths With different histories With different politics With different emotions Who find room for each other in their hearts in their dreams and in their lives. Those who hold firmly to a vision of peace and justice anywhere in the world. Spirit of Life and Love, be present with all who are suffering terribly. Lift up the hearts of those who fear. And inspire courage among the peacemakers. Be present with political leaders, ensuring a retreat from violence and a procession towards the peace table. Guide the hands of all those who are caring for the injured, the hungry and the grieving. And, open our own hearts to compassion. Remind us of our complicity and responsibility. And lead us towards generous engagement—always towards a vision of peace. Amen.

A great chance to get in volunteer hours!

5. If you come to church and played with clay and paint by yourself – people may look at you funny 4. The commitment is just 7-10 times per church year! That is less than an average of once per month! Plus Chelsea gives teachers the fun and easy lesson plan ahead of time. 3. Experience new and awesome classrooms! 2. Change the world. If you change one life you have made a difference. 1. Karma credit Peace, Faith, and Love, Chelsea

NEWS NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS GROUNDS UPDATE offered by Martha Horvay

Through the efforts of many helping hands, our new landscape design is taking shape on the South side of the building. Thanks to Linda Brown, Harris Liehl, Curt Donaldson, Bill Genuchi, Jackie Egan, Becky and Sharad Seth, Carol Kendrick, and Carol Carlson, who helped with Spring Grounds Cleanup by providing either manual labor, snacks, or both.

A new pantry garden, under the direction of Megan McGuffey, with help from Keith McGuffey and Tim Johnson, now has four raised beds. Meanwhile, Noreen Carpenter, Rick and Penny Urwiler, Debbi Barnes-Josiah, Penny Siefker, Becky Seth and Linda Brown have quietly continued to weed areas undisturbed by construction. Work on the North side of the building will continue as weather permits. We anticipate a busy Fall with additional new shrubs and lawn that will need planting and watering.

NEXT STEPS The weekend of May 2-3 brought out the true offered by Harry Heafer spirit of Unitarian good will by volunteers led by To serve as an early notice Curt Donaldson, who dug and heads up, we expect a trench between two (hope) that sometime in July neighbor’s yards to we will be ready to move improve drainage of the more mulch to the back of Martha Horvay church’s watershed the church where the across their properties. playground structure will be Unsung Unitarian 2015 Special thanks go to reconstructed! George Maly, Becky Seth, Yeah!!!! I'm sure the children will be excited to Linda Brown and Leo Genuchi who helped plant see it reappear. We will need to move in many and mulch new shrubbery. Harry and Karen inches of mulch which will require many Heafer, Mary Sommermeyer, Earl Kramer, Mark wheelbarrows and many bodies to make it go Williams, Christine Starr Davis, Tonya Haigh, quickly. Tim Hopkins and Bill Genuchi spread a huge pile of mulch on the new pre-school playground area. Once the mulch has been put in place we will then need to move all the pieces of the playground structure and start putting it together. This would be a great event for the older youth to lend a hand on. Please be on the lookout for an email blast we hope sometime in mid-late July for a notice for volunteers and we hope you'll be available to come. And, prior to putting the playground structure back together, we need to paint sealer all over every piece of wood. This would also be a great thing for older youth to help out on. And of course maybe it will stop raining one of these days so we could look at starting to work on this prior to wood chip moving.

NEW ME MBERS New Member: Carol Kendrick

Carol has lived in Lincoln for many years. She has had a busy life during those many years and was not connected to a church. Recently after her husband passed away and she began to feel the need for connections with others and reached out to the Unitarian Church of Lincoln where her daughter Jean is our Administrative Director. Once Carol began coming to church she found friends and deep spiritual meaning in the weekly worship services. She has participated in the A Chosen Faith book discussion classes, is an active member of the Newcomer Discussion Group; she brings treats to church occasionally, is active in the all church potlucks and she helps in the mailing of church newsletter. Carol enjoys singing in the church choir, “I leapt right in to attending some things that I was interested in, potlucks, game night, and then I was so impressed by Julie Enersen’s musical service, that I joined the choir, and I have loved that.” She helps with the bookstore by doing whatever needs to be done.

found about the Unitarian Church of Lincoln online, and I discovered my friend, Amy Miller, attended. She invited me to attend, and I knew after a few Sundays that I had found my new spiritual home. I have served coffee a number of times, and I attend a newcomer discussion group every other Tuesday. I would enjoy an opportunity to directly assist/participate in worship services.

I have a wife, Jen, and two children, Rhianna (10) and Adelaide (3). In my leisure time, I enjoy reading books on religion, philosophy, science, and the occasional science fiction book. I also enjoy games, especially board/card games and roleplaying games. I also enjoy oil painting on occasion. I like socializing, and I look forward to meeting more people at church.” Look for Jesse’s photo on the new member board which is hung on the end of the coat rack in the hallway closest to the Gallery room and find him during coffee hour and welcome him as one of our new members!

Carol also enjoys helping with the Fresh Start dinners that our congregation provide monthly for the Fresh Start Home for Women. And she helped with the Saturday grounds clean up by bringing food to that event. She will be participating in the Shared Hospitality Workshop on August 8. Please look for Carol during the coffee hour in late July and welcome her as one of our new members!

If Our Walls Could Talk, Part II offered by the volunteer coordinators of the Management Team If you started to come to our church after December of 2013, the way our church looks now is the way it has always looked to you. Even before the build and remodel, the office was pretty near to the front door, RGL generally in the same area, and the sanctuary and kitchen just where they are now. However, smiling at you when you walked in before January 2014, were the faces of the program coordinators who serve as volunteer co-Executives of the church. If you can touch it, hear it, taste it, see it, or smell it, one of the coordinators likely has a hand in cheerleading or slaving over (I mean, faithfully supporting) it. That’s why the coordinators’ photos were up – so you could eyeball the folks who might have an answer to your operations questions. We really do want to hear from you. However, what if you have thoughts about the vision and mission of the church and how we position ourselves long term as a liberal religious community in Lincoln? That’s actually the focus of the elected members of the Board of Trustees. They too want to engage with you, to know and be known by you. So photos of them would be helpful too right? Hold the phone though. Without you to serve and partner with, our work in the church wouldn’t be very meaningful or bear much fruit. That’s where “500 Photos” comes in! We plan to create a photomosaic of our church members and friends in the form of our chalice logo. Up close, you will find the faces of those you know and some you don’t yet know talking, smiling, laughing, eating, worshiping, raking, cleaning, listening, marching, and every other expression of our religious community. We’re calling this “500 Photos” because it will take that many images to complete the mosaic. We will offer the 500 spots for $10 each as a fundraiser for the operating budget. Each photo will be placed in a folder of digital images until all 500 are sold. Stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Service Dogs in Our Building

offered by Karen Dienstbier, Membership Coordinator

Since January we have had two people visit us bringing with them their service dogs. One of those people felt that the dog was unwelcome in our church because of a remark made to her. It is important to reach out to anyone with a disability as well as our other guests and visitors, and to make them all feel welcome in our congregation. Please try to be kind and welcoming to all who enter our church. If you have a problem with the dog being in our building please stay away from it. Our 1st Principle of the 7 speaks directly to this issue. It states: “We, the Member Congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Covenant to Affirm and Promote: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;” We want to offer a warm welcome to all people who come to worship with us on Sunday mornings. Remember the words to the hymn Come, Come, Whoever You Are and take them to heart. The Official Service Dog Registry states the following: People with service animals must be allowed access to all public accommodations. This right takes precedence over all state and local laws which might otherwise prohibit animals in those places such as Stores, Malls, Restaurants, Hotels/Resorts, Airlines, Cruise ships, Taxi cabs, Buses just to name a few.

SAVE THE DATE! Shared Hospitality Workshop On August 8 the Newcomer Committee will host the Shared Hospitality Workshop for ALL people interested in volunteer service on Sunday morning. Why do we offer training to our new members and others at a Shared Hospitality Workshop? Because it is important to us to “Welcome the Stranger” in a way they will want to return. We encourage everyone to learn how to be welcoming and friendly to our visitors. Remember how important it was to you when you first arrived at church – smiling faces welcoming you and your family into this new church? We have offered the workshop for several years so that our members feel comfortable welcoming and greeting others. It has been proven both at this church and other congregations that if a visitor feels welcomed and comfortable then they will return to learn more about the congregation. Our Unitarian Universalist Congregations for many years have had the opportunity to take training so that members and friends feel comfortable greeting and welcoming our newcomers and guests. The concept of “welcoming the stranger” goes back far into our past. As our Christian roots tell us, Jesus welcomed the stranger as one of his own when he was preaching and in his daily life. Wasn’t this how he acquired his disciples and other converts to Christianity? Welcoming of our newcomers and our visitors needs to be intentional and it needs to be a regular part of our shared ministry. Please join us!

TH A NK Y O US Thanks to the Sunday Volunteers!

Eastridge Food Pantry Grocery List

Your work is important to ALL of us and we appreciate you and your volunteer activity very much!

As many of you know, we participate in our neighborhood food pantry. We collect food in a basket in the first coat rack. The collections are delivered every few weeks by Debbi Barnes-Josiah. They have begun a new system where they email each of the participating churches once a month with a list of things that are especially needed. We plan to post this “Grocery List” on the bulletin board in the Gallery and share it in the newsletter.

Thank you too to the Newcomer Committee for hosting the All Church Potluck lunch after church on Flower Communion Sunday. We welcomed 10 new members into our congregation during the potluck too which made for a very special celebration. The Newcomer Committee also held a Pizza and Game Night for newcomers to give them a chance to get acquainted with us.

Please consider purchasing items from this list for the pantry when you go shopping: mac & cheese, jello, salad dressing, flour, ketchup, pudding, toothpaste & brushes, paper towels, dishwashing soap, laundry soap, bar soap/ hand soap, toilet paper.
