Congratulations to our Valedictorian and Salutatorian Congratulations to Valedictorian Mitchell LoMascolo and Salutatorian Samantha Walawender of the Union Springs Central School District Class of 2015. Mitchell is the son of Joseph and Kathy LoMascolo. Samantha is the daughter of Dennis and Pamela Walawender. Mitchell and Samantha have not only established and maintained high academic accomplishments, but they have played integral roles in various school and community activities. Our Valedictorian Mitchell LoMascolo was a three Varsity sport athlete, participating in bowling, track, and baseball. He was also Class President, President of the local National Honor Society chapter, a peer tutor, and a member of the Double Downs Trivia team. Mitchell’s interests include fishing, hiking, video gaming, and crossfit. While at school, Mitchell’s favorite subject was science. He credits Mrs. Graham and Mr. Zdanowski for changing his life. Both of these teachers pushed Mitchell to be the best that he could be. Mitchell’s fondest memory of high school is how close knit the school community has become. “The feeling of having a school family is something that means much more than a school dance or other memory,” says Mitchell. Mitchell plans to attend Clarkson University in the fall and study Pre-Med.

“Once you say you’re going to settle for second, that’s what happens to you in life.” – John F. Kennedy

“When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” – Eric Thomas

Our Salutatorian Samantha Walawender has also demonstrated a variety of talents academically and athletically. Samantha was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in basketball and softball. Samantha’s hobbies include kayaking, traveling, and attending concerts. She was inspired by Mrs. Horbal, and took a special interest in calculus and history. Samantha’s fondest memory of high school is spending time with her basketball team during junior year. Although they did not have the best record, they were a close knit family and had a great time together on and off the court. Samantha plans to attend Northeastern University in the fall and major in International Affairs and Economics. She will also start her first semester studying abroad in Thessaloniki, Greece.

SPRING BOARD based programming. Additionally, we have been working with our technology department to upgrade our servers, our network, and our wireless capabilities so that our students will have greater access to technology come the fall.

Letter From the Superintendent Greetings: The 2014-2015 school-year concluded with celebrations of the academic accomplishments of our students at awards ceremonies and with the graduation of the Class of 2015. I wish them all much success in their future endeavors. This year’s graduating class will hold a special place in my memory, as it was my first as a superintendent of schools. I am confident that their connections and pride in Union Springs will set them on a course toward a bright future. This summer we again turn the page as we commence the 2015-2016 academic year. This coming school year will be one of continuous growth regarding the opportunities available to our students. With the support of our community, Union Springs was able to launch a Summer Academy this year, engaging our students in STEM and literacy based project learning. More than 140 students in grades K-7 participated in this program. Many community members followed the learning of our students on our new website www.unionspringscsd.org and on Twitter @unionspringcsd. Over the first few weeks of summer, we have been working to refine our planning for a newly devised Middle School program affording our students more time in classrooms, with greater access to elective

Further this summer, our new K-3 ELA program arrived at Cayuga and our teachers have been diligently working to consider how these curricular resources can augment our already strong instructional program. Also, our transportation department has been hard at work planning new pick-up times for our elementary students in the fall so that students can have more instructional time with teachers and each building doesn’t have multiple different start times depending on when the buses arrive.

“This year’s graduating class will hold a special place in my memory, as it was my first as a superintendent of schools.” I am excited for the 2015-2016 school year, and am confident that we will continue to pursue excellence in our programming and in our schools. Please visit our new website, to learn more about the accomplishments of our students and district. We have much work to do together in the coming year, and I look forward to journey that lies before us. Educationally Yours,

Superintendent of Schools

SPRING BOARD

Spring Athletics The Spring Athletic Season was competitive and our Union Springs Athletes were very successful. Several team IAC League Championships were won, as well as Section IV crowns individually.

The Softball program had a very successful season. The JV team only lost one game of the season. Our Varsity team won the IAC Large School North Championship and was seeded second in Sectional play. The team was eventually eliminated in the Sectional Semi-finals. The team was led by Jamison Valentino, Rachel Morgan, and Grace Van Horn, who were all named to the IAC First Team All-Stars. Grace was also named the ESPN Softball Player of the Year.

The Tennis team had some great individual performances at the IAC Tournament. Austin Tardibone placed 3rd at 1st Singles, while Ian Park had an overall individual record of 9-1 in 2nd Singles and placed 2nd at the IAC Tournament. In the exhibition portion of the tournament, 7th grader Zach DeCaro won the gold medal in IAC Boys Singles.

Ian’s overall individual record: 9-1 The Golf team had a good season finishing with an overall mark of 9-5. The team qualified for Sectionals and placed 7th at that event. Individually Jordan Anthony and Cameron Anthony led the way qualifying for the Individual Sectional Tournament at Cornell University, both were also named IAC 1st Team All-Stars. Cameron continued to shine as he qualified for the 2nd day of competition.

Team overall mark: 9-5 Varsity Baseball also continued its winning tradition. They not only backed up a divisional crown, but won their second consecutive Overall IAC Championship. Along the way they also won the Cayuga County Baseball Tournament. The team was led by 1st Team All-Stars Schyler Jennings, Nick Slobodiak, Will Vreeland, and Connor Siracusa.

2nd consecutive IAC Championship

Probably our finest performances of the season came from our Track and Field team. Although they had a successful regular season, the awards started rolling in the post-season. At the Section IV Class D Meet we had a relay team of Jared Wilmot, Josh Jenkins, Zach Balog, and Evan DeGraw win the 4 x 400 meter relay event. Zach was not done there as he also took home the individual 800 meter run championship. From there the team competed in the State Qualifier where Evan DeGraw was the overall 800 meter champion and he advanced to the NYS Track and Field Championships. Evan placed 6th overall at States and made the podium. This was the 5th consecutive season that Evan competed in the State tournament in various sports including Varsity Boys Soccer and Indoor Track.

Evan placed 6th in States
