Structure The Green Skills Partnership for London (GSPL) has been formed as a partnership body inclusive of : • Trade unions, • Employers • Further education colleges, • Community representatives • Sector Skills Councils (Asset , Summit and Construction), • Job Centre Plus • London Borough Councils It has been Established as a model to improving links and create partnerships

Aims of the Project •Co-operative working and innovation around sustainable development principles as part of ‘bottom up’ development. •Creating local jobs, work experience /placements/ apprenticeships in environmental sustainability, climate change and low carbon initiatives •Ensuring all work related activities have decent conditions, pay and safety standards •Access to bespoke accredited courses around the new Green Deal curriculum including ‘first step in’, higher education for potential project managers and up skilling of trades •Innovative engagement of communities including those most vulnerable and disadvantaged in tackling fuel poverty, climate change and sustainable communities. •Promote environmental literacy enabling employers, families and communities to articulate their needs, set up or participate in initiatives themselves and improve employment potential. •Provide environmentally aware, current and informed career and training guidance, particularly the renovation market, domestic energy, waste and power and new eco-skills

www.tuc.org.uk Progression to date: • 40 community Discussion Leaders trained (3 courses) across 2 boroughs, • Roll out of 2 community awareness courses in Lewisham in partnership with Wilmot Dixon in relation to the redevelopment of the Meadows estate • 14 people signed up to do their Pttls (preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector) • Placed 6 people into part-time paid training as ‘green ambassadors’ through Lewisham College and the construction union UCATT. • Award of JCP Flexible support fund to key partner Groundwork to deliver 100 pre employment opportunities in the horticulture, waste management and retrofit sectors in South London, with a further 60 green and low carbon jobs to be created • New initiative set up -The Lewisham New leaf collective (Cooperative) • Progression Pathways identified • Recruitment to ‘green skills’ training providers. – rainwater harvesting, solar pv, internal and external cavity wall insulation etc. • A guarantee of opportunities for jobs, work placements and apprentices across 3 London boroughs through the Project from Beonsite/Lendlease •Agreed to roll out project in partnership with Lakehouse on their projects in Hackney and Lewisham.

www.tuc.org.uk What's Next? • Further development of the New Leaf Coorperative looking into: - Community gardening - researching co-operative models - Work with the local Council to obtain empty properties(voids) to retro-fit and bring back into use utilising local labour and skills and providing training opportunities for apprentices and others seeking construction qualifications -Creating a Database showing skills, training, interests of everyone involved • Continue to roll out the Environmental Discussion leaders and Community environmental awareness courses in Tower hamlets in partnership with Carillion, •Looking to roll the model out in partnership with Lakehouse in Hackney • Identify more employment , training opportunities and possible partners •Submit bids to Secure Funding
