UNION COLLEGE Honor Roll of Donors

In the fall of 2016, Union College welcomed the largest freshman class in over 40 years. Nearly 300 new students now call Union home and have begun a journey that will take them through some of the best years of their lives. While increased enrollment is always a good thing, it does create unique challenges for our campus as we work to ensure that student life and academic experience are equal to the experiences you and your classmates shared at Union. Thank you for all you do for Union College. As we continue to grow, we need you now more than ever – your wisdom, your time and your investment -- to help keep “Dear Old Union, Union Strong and Free.” (From Union’s Alma Mater, written by Abigail E. Weeks.) 2015-2016 | 1 |

Dr. Marcia Hawkins President president@unionky.edu

Dear Alumni and Friends, Of the many highlights of my tenure as Union’s president, I must say that welcoming our largest freshman class in over 40 years ranks at or near the top. Many of you were Union students during those “golden decades” of increased enrollment and the resulting period of enhancements to campus facilities and services. As was the case then, each new class of students brings greater expectations for living spaces, recreational spaces, academic centers and modern amenities. Buildings come and go, facilities usage changes over time and the campus footprint may look different, but there are constants. Our campus is historic. It is beautiful. It feels like home. Those characteristics remain true for students no matter when they attended Union because faculty, staff, students, and our alumni work together to shape the future for each new generation.

You paved the way

UNION COLLEGE DONOR PROFILE: MARY ALICE LAY

As the 2015 spring semester came to a close, Mary Alice Lay announced she was retiring from Union College. A few weeks following her announcement, Union staff held a reception to honor Lay and her achievements throughout her career. The reception brought many friends, family members, former students and co-workers to the Sharp Academic Center, just a short distance from her office and classroom, to wish Lay well and to shower her with hugs and gifts. It is customary that retiring Union staff and faculty be given an elegant, wooden rocking chair to enjoy during the next phase of their life. When President Marcia Hawkins unveiled Lay’s rocking chair, Lay thanked Dr. Hawkins and paused briefly for a photo, but she didn’t sit in the chair. That moment, that subconscious non-action, might tell all one needs to know about Mary Alice Lay and her devotion to the college – in 54 years she has never sat down on Union. She doesn’t plan to any time soon, retired or not. Mary Alice Lay began her teaching career at Union College in 1961. Her connection with the college began much sooner. She walked past the college everyday while she was a student at Barbourville City Elementary School. She skated down the Legacy Walk in front of Centennial Hall with her friends and rode | 4 | Union College Honor Roll of Donors

bicycles around campus. In high school, Lay took her first job at Union – waiting tables for 25 cents an hour in the basement dining room of the Classroom Building (Centennial Hall) for guests visiting campus. Her parents met at Union, graduated from Union and included Union in many of their family conversations. In all, more than 20 of Lay’s family members have attended Union College with the third generation graduating in recent years. “Union College is a family jewel to us,” Lay said. “We love Union and pray for the college’s continued success.” Lay said no one in her family ever told her to go to college or told her to become a teacher; it was just instinctive for her. Most of her immediate family members were teachers, and Lay feels she was “just born to teach.” “I remember coming home from school and teaching my dolls the lessons we had learned that day,” she said. Lay began her coursework at Union and completed her education at the University of Kentucky. The summer she graduated from college and returned

to Barbourville, Union President Mahlon Miller offered Lay her first teaching job in the home economics program. The offer was humbling, she said, and she proudly accepted. She taught students in a variety of programs – home economics, education, nursing and health.

football was reintroduced to campus in 1984. Around the same time, fewer students were enrolling in home economics and fine arts courses. Many of those majors were dropped or changed significantly, replaced with new majors and new students in disciplines such as human performance, athletic training and nursing.

“The number of home economic students was small in comparison to (that of) education, but we were a very close group,” Lay said. “I have such fond memories of these students.” Lay says she has always placed Union’s students first in her career, even when doing so compelled her to connect with them outside of the classroom.

“Students are students no matter where they come from,” Lay said. “My teaching techniques did not change, nor did my love and concern for the students. Teachers must realize they are teaching individuals with many needs. To be an effective teacher, you must recognize and meet these needs. If students know that you care for them as individuals and want the best for them and expect the best from them, the students will respond more eagerly and diligently. Students will rise to their teacher’s expectations.”

When she began teaching, the Union student body included a large number of students from the northeastern United States. When the students prepared to leave on their first holiday break, Lay was concerned about their long trips home. “I packed snacks because they said they only stopped for gas and restroom breaks,” she said, offering some regret that she never did accept the students invitations to go home with them. “I was just so concerned they would get hungry.” Lay would see her students change throughout the years. Fewer came from the northeast and more students found their way from out of the Appalachian Mountains and into Union classrooms. More athletes also began to enter her classroom, especially when

At one point in her career at Union, Lay left the classroom to support the Union mission in other ways. She served as Director of Alumni Relations for a time, before returning to the education department, where she would spend the next 30 years. “The most rewarding experience has been seeing how successful Union College education majors have been in the classroom and in administrative positions,” Lay said noting all the former students who are now principals, administrators and who have ... page 6 won awards, including being named 2015-2016 | 5 |

Kentucky’s Teacher of the Year. “All the tenured teachers and administrators deserve recognition and praise. They work very hard and spend many hours at school.” Lay has experienced significant changes at Union, including technological advances. The first computer was placed on her desk in 1998, just days before her department managed its first education accreditation process. She has witnessed class migrations to online platforms, with Union among the first colleges in Kentucky to implement the new format. She has learned to use email, a Smart Board, a smart phone and is now learning to take advantage of social media. At the core of all of her experiences, though, stands an unchanging outpouring of care for her students. “I did love my students and cared for each of them,” she said. “My students were the most important part of my professional life. I think most of my students realized that.” Before retirement, Lay was witness to one another major change at Union College. Last fall, the Education department, led by Dr. Jason Reeves, moved Union’s education program toward national accreditation for the first time in program history. “The teachers graduating today have been truly tested and prepared to be twenty-first century teachers,” Lay said. “I am very proud to have played a small part in this process.” Months after the department took the final steps toward the accreditation review, Lay announced her retirement. Her official last day was May 31, 2015. No other person in Union’s history has served the college longer than Mary Alice Lay. “I want to be remembered as a teacher who loved teaching and loved her students,” she said. “I ask the students not to forget Union when they graduate or leave. Students are more likely to graduate and be responsive alumni if they have had a good relationship with at least one faculty or staff member during their stay at Union. I hope I was that person for many of my students.”

Even though she is not coming to campus each morning, Lay says she will continue to work for Union College by supporting the school financially, attending college functions and continuing to advocate for “one of Barbourville’s most important assets.” “I want to share with the larger Union College family that we are family on and off campus. As members of this family, we have responsibilities to recruit students and to financially support Union,” she said. “If each member of the alumni family would tell their story to another perspective student, we could double the enrollment at Union. Everyone has a successful and personal story they could tell.”

NEW UNION STUDENTS FOCUS ON COMMUNITY DURING SERVICE DAY Union College welcomed nearly 300 new students to campus for the fall semester. Freshmen orientation activities focused on adapting to the college environment and on serving the community.” On Friday, August 19, every incoming freshman was asked to participate in Service Day, a day long community outreach experience now in its second year. Students spent the morning picking up litter, cleaning business windows and making repairs at public facilities throughout Barbourville and Knox County. Stefanie Edgell, Union College’s Programming Assistant with Americorps VISTA, said “Service Day was a huge success.” Edgell organized this year’s Service Day through Union’s Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of Student Development as part of Union’s two-week freshmen orientation program. “Service Day could not have happened without help from the community members, faculty and staff and student leaders,” Edgell said. “Their service hearts, and passion, helped introduce the incoming freshmen to many local areas and community members,” Edgell said. Mary Gabriel, a Union College freshman from Danville, said she “enjoyed the opportunity” to participate in Service Day. Gabriel worked with 15 other students and peer mentors to operate a mobile pet adoption clinic with the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter. “Service Day is a great way for incoming freshmen to get involved with the community and get to know the town we will be living in for four years,” Gabriel said. Civic engagement is a primary component of Union College’s mission, so much in fact, that three scholarship opportunities exist for students who engage in ongoing service activities. Gabriel, and the 300 freshman students on campus with her, are all eligible and encouraged to take advantage of those service-based scholarships. Gabriel is excited to take advantage of these programs, especially the U|Grad scholarship program. It combines components of academic standing, participation in extracurricular activities and community service to provide a scholarship (up to full tuition) during the student’s last semester at Union.

“This is something I definitely want to follow up with,” Gabriel said of the U|Grad program. “After this weekend, I was thinking I need to make sure I stick with this.” The Service Day was part of the Union College Experience - a week-long program of activities geared toward engaging college freshmen in various aspects of campus life. Students arrive on campus one week earlier than upperclassmen and participate in campus tours, classroom prep and student support services. In addition, they spend time learning about each other through a number of social experiences. The program was developed to engage students and improve student retention at Union; statistics show increases in both retention and engagement for each year the program has been made available. Union freshmen continue the Union College Experience throughout their first semester with class sessions developed around advising and mentoring. Recognition Levels VISION MAKER SOCIETIES

In 1879, Union College arose out of a need – a need for education. For the citizens of Barbourville, then a town of 450 citizens and three brick buildings, establishing an institution of higher learning for children was imperative. They believed education was the path to leadership and a brighter future. With that same visionary spirit, Union continues to be a springboard for great minds, for young leaders and for all those with a commitment to education. We want to thank our supporters within these groups of philanthropists who continue to invest in the mission.

Union’s Vision Maker Societies include: DANIEL STEVENSON SOCIETY Credited with rescuing Union from almost certain closing, Daniel Stevenson of Versailles, KY, served as Union’s president from 1888 to 1897. He fulfilled his dream of establishing a Methodist college in the area which he considered to be in the greatest need of service. He was the first president after the college became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. This Society is for donors of $1,000,000 or more cumulatively. FANNY SPEED SOCIETY Mrs. Fanny Speed of Louisville was Union’s first great benefactress. Her interest in Dr. Stevenson’s purchase of Union’s property is evident through her gifts totaling more than $60,000 during his administration. Following her death in 1902, Union received half of her estate, approximately $266,000. These funds helped to complete Speed Hall and rebuild both Stevenson Hall and the Administration building (renamed Classroom Building and later Centennial Hall). This Society is for donors of $500,000 - $999,999 within the fiscal year. ABIGAIL E. WEEKS SOCIETY Miss Abigail Weeks, a beloved librarian and head of the English department, served the college for 32 years. In the June 2, 1937, issue of the Orange and Black, her service to Union was recognized: “She gave to Union College her sacrificial loyalty, and fulfilled the sentiment of her own lines, written as a fitting close to the college Alma Mater, ‘We will live for thee.’” This Society is for donors of $100,000 - $499,999 within the fiscal year.

Townsend Circle

CIRCLE

He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn’t be done, and he did it. from “It Couldn’t Be Done” by Edgar A. Guest

In the 1948 Stespean, Milt Townsend’s senior picture is accompanied by this poetry excerpt, aptly chosen to convey his attitude about perseverance and meeting challenges. He didn’t abandon this way of thinking upon Commencement; rather, he kept it alive with contagious optimism for the next 42 years as he helped Union College prosper. Townsend Circle is a tribute to his constant belief that through Union, it can be done.

| 16 | Union College Honor Roll of Donors

This club is named for Milton Townsend, who served the College in many capacities from his graduation until the time of his passing in 1992. Like Milt Townsend, who was instrumental in the advancement of the College, this club seeks to honor those who believe in Union College and have made great sacrifice towards our growth and achievement. Membership can be earned by either giving a yearly total of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year (June 1 - July 30) or lifetime support to the College at $100,000 and above.

A Day in the Life – Appalachian Service Project It is not how most teenagers would choose to spend a week of their summer vacation. But, those who do will tell you they created vacation memories that last a lifetime; memories that keep them coming back year after year.

seven weeks during the summer. Each week, around 75 individuals take up residence on the Union College campus. They come from all over the country– Wisconsin, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina, Maryland and places in between.

Every summer since 1969, young men and women from all over the United States have traveled to Knox County for one week of “transformational experience.” That’s the mission of the Appalachia Service Project – not only transforming homes, but, also, transforming the lives of the homeowners they serve and the volunteers who manage the work.

They start their mornings at 7 a.m. They eat, they lace up their boots and they travel to the far corners of Knox County, often traveling 30 minutes or more from the college to the job site. Most have never been to the mountains. Many have never used a hammer. The majority have never witnessed poverty like that which exists here in Appalachia – many have been blind to the poverty that exists in their own hometowns.

Tess Cassidy serves Appalachia Service Project (ASP) as Center Director for the Knox County project chapter. The young woman from Ohio wears heavy-duty work boots, blue jeans, red frame sunglasses and a smile. Within minutes of speaking with her, she makes the mission clear – “it’s all about transformation for everyone involved.” Cassidy spent five years volunteering with ASP as a teenager. She has worked on the ASP staff for two years. Other staff members tell the same story. They each started as young volunteers, often working with church groups, and have spent the greater portion of their young lives immersed in service, mostly in Appalachia. “My father has done this for 15 years,” said Courtney Centrello, Operations Coordinator for the Knox center. “He has always wanted to come here to Knox County, but never made it. But, I’m here on my first trip out.” Knox County is special to Centrello and the other volunteers who join her here. It’s also special to ASP. In 1969, Rev. Glenn “Tex” Evans, a United Methodist Minister, came to Knox County. He located Union College and President Mahlon Miller, and a partnership was born. During that first summer, Evans took 50 volunteers, including Union students, and repaired four homes in Knox County. The first swing of a hammer that summer drove something deeper than any nail ever could. “People come from all over to volunteer for us,” Cassidy said. “ASP started right here in Barbourville, so it is just so cool to get to continue that tradition.” Today, ASP brings volunteers into Knox County for

“It is just a real eye opener when you come into this area,” said Doug Mitchell, a farmer from Mason City, Iowa. “You drive along and see these nice houses, and then you see shacks. You don’t see anything in the middle. That’s not the way it is at home.” Mitchell has been coming to Kentucky to help with ASP projects for nine years. Each summer, he specifically requests to return to Kentucky. He says that one day he will retire here and “wake up to these mountains every day.” Mitchell and the members of his church group, like all ASP recruits, volunteer to spend a week managing and working on construction projects, and they pay for the opportunity to do so. ASP uses the funds to purchase materials used on each of the projects, furthering the impact of the organization. “Ask anyone here and they will tell you the same thing,” Mitchell said. “You will get so much more out of this than you will ever give.” Mitchell and his group were helping a young family in the Stinking Creek area of Knox County that lived in an outdated trailer, too small for the family of four. Three young children, two girls and a boy, shared a room. ASP was there to fix the roof of the trailer and finish an addition on the home that would give each of the girls her own room. While Mitchell and his crew worked, the young children played outside. They jumped on a trampoline, they hugged small puppies and they clung to their young mother as they watched the men and women from an

Iowa church work on their home. The day before, the family had struggled to move belongings and pets away from floodwater where the creek had swollen and engulfed the backyard. That morning, Mitchell wasn’t sure his group could get to the worksite as they encountered evidence of the heavy rains along the way -- wash outs in the road, debris and even low water crossings. “It’s been worse before,” the mother said, smiling back at Mitchell. “Living out here, you just learn to deal with it.” Within a half a mile of that residence, two other ASP crews worked. The groups, each from Wisconsin, spent a week in the area engaged in the ASP mission of transformation. The first crew worked on a trailer just a few hundred yards from the first. Young children peaked from under the curtains of their home as the crews tramped outside in the mud, helping with underpinning and a porch, ensuring the young children had “two safe exits from their home.” Further up the creek, the second crew was working on the back porch of a single story house with less than 500 square feet of living space. An older gentleman, Earl Smith, lived there alone, in the same area where his mother raised him and where he raised his children. Smith migrated to wherever he could find work, or where music called his name or where God called him. But, for more than 30 years of his hard-scrabble life, he always returned to his life in that tiny house, on that usually tiny creek, in the outer stretches of Knox County. “Every single person on this earth is driven by a purpose,” he said. “And, everyone can fulfill that purpose with the will of God. Just look what these people here are doing. Look at the purpose they are fulfilling.” Smith told stories of his own purpose - of God giving him the gift of music, something he used for other people’s enjoyment. “I can play anything you put in my hands,” he said. He performed on the Cass Walker show, the Knoxville television program built around advertising Walker’s grocery stores. It was the same venue that launched the career of Dolly Parton. Smith didn’t get famous and never took a dollar for his talents, he said, opting to play and sing to raise money at events arranged to benefit others.

When he wasn’t playing music, he was chasing odd jobs, mostly carpentry work, throughout southeastern Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. He always returned to that corner of Knox County along Stinking Creek. “I’ve lived my life and I wouldn’t take any of it back to do over again,” he said. “I’ve done okay. I’ve raised a family here and I’ve fulfilled my purpose to the Lord. And, I’ve proven that if you are good to people, they will be good to you.” Those words resonated from Smith while he stood at the front of his house, one hand propped against a newly built front porch that seven strangers built for him in the days before. Those same people, no longer strangers, were finishing the back porch as Smith talked about his travels and told stories, some tragic, all manifested in the wrinkles on his face. Smith’s house was one of 15 projects ASP and its more than 500 volunteers completed in Knox County in that single summer. The organization received over 300 requests for help that year, a testament to the need that still exists in the area. “When projects don’t make the list in one year, we try to work with other organizations to fill that need, or we revisit those projects in the following year,” Cassidy said. Even with so many volunteers, the need is immense and many go unmet. And, the need extends well beyond Knox County. ASP serves 10 other counties in Kentucky and 18 other sites in four states, just through this one program. Other ASP programs serve other needs and some provide help year round. “These people are a blessing to me and they are always welcome to come back here,” Smith said. “Like I said, if you are good to people, they will be good to you.” You can learn more about the Appalachia Service Project, and all of its programs, by visiting www. asphome.org. ASP and Union College are building on their partnership of more than 40 years. Union is an ASP College Service Project Chapter, one of only seven in the entire ASP service area. Union’s CSP chapter relies on gifts and volunteers to provide year round assistance to local families.
