Rostraver Twp. Historical Society Releases Lecture Schedule for 2012 RTHS, thanks to the efforts of Charles McCormick, has secured a lineup of speakers for the coming year. The speakers will present their programs on the 2nd Thursday of each month starting in March. The public is invited to attend the programs starting at 7 p.m. after the regular meeting at 6 p.m. at the old Fells Methodist Church in the Sanctuary Room. Cookies and refreshments will be available through the efforts of Chairman Marlene Cook. MARCH 8: Todd Johnson of McKeesport; “Ghost in the Head,” of Native American descent, will lecture and display native culture of the pre-colonial and colonial periods in America. Todd lectures in elementary and colleges.
Rostraver Library Upcoming Events The Rostraver Public Library, 700 Plaza Drive, Belle Vernon has a variety of ongoing and upcoming events. Knitting classes are held the 1st and 3rd Thursday at 1 p.m. and the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Book Club meets the 2nd Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Library offers e-book downloads for Nook, Easy Reader and Song Reader. You must have a current Rostraver Public Library card to utilize this service. The spring session of Story Time is currently underway and the book sale is ongoing at the Library. The Library has partnered with WCCC to offer the AARP Tax Aid on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Wednesday, March 21 the committee will hold a presentation geared towards parents of middle school-aged children, Helping Your Child Understand the Dangers of Drugs. Lieutenant John Christner of the Rostraver Twp. PD will present this informative program. There is no charge for the program and parents are encouraged to attend. Charleroi Clean-Up Days Planned Individuals and organizations who would like to participate in Community Clean-Up Days in the Borough of Charleroi are being sought. The two-day event will be held Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28. There will be prizes for most improved properties, public space and other categories. Dumpsters will be placed in different locations for easy disposal and volunteers are being requested to help residents who need assistance. Planting, garbage pick-up and hauling, sweeping, painting and other chores will be performed. Speers Civic Club Accepting Scholarship Applications Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Speers Civic Club college scholarship. The deadline for submission is April 1. Applicants must live within Speers borough and be a senior graduating from either Charleroi Area High School or an accredited private school. Scholarship applications may be picked up at Charleroi Area High School and must be returned to the school on or before April 1, 2012.
Valley 1st CFCU Offers Mon Valley HS Seniors Annual Scholarship Valley 1st is offering their second annual scholarship for graduating high school seniors. Two awards in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded. Applicants must be a graduating senior and attending a post-secondary school in the fall. Applicants must be either a member or direct relative of a member of Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union. Applicants cannot be a direct relative of a member of the board of directors, supervisory committee, or employee of Valley 1st Community Federal credit union. For application information, stop at one of our branches at 815 Schoonmaker Ave. in Monessen or inside Wal-Mart in Rostraver.
