We are back! We were a few months out of circulation, with the sole purpose of improving to keep your preference, to keep you inform about what is happening on both sides of the border. We strongly continue with our mission to bridge our two countries through art and culture, because they are both beautiful and finally to the heart, mind and soul, there should be no boundaries. So, for this edition we visited the Mexicali Biennial 2013 in the city of Los Angeles and we bring you all about this exhibition series. We also have the valuable work of Jill Marie Holslin, a professor at the University of San Diego and American journalist, who decided to move to the city of Tijuana, finding inspiration among the alleys of this busy city. Capturing the raw, ordinary and some of the history of Tijuana in a beautiful set of photographs. You will also find an interesting issue about the benefits of blueberries, a Calendar of the main events in the region and more. Enjoy it! Estuvimos unos meses fuera de circulación, con la única finalidad de mejorar cada vez más para seguir contando con su amable preferencia, para informarlos sobre lo que pasa tanto de un lado, como del otro de la frontera. Seguimos teniendo como misión conectar a los dos países por medio del arte y la cultura, porque ambos son bellos y finalmente para el corazón, la mente y el alma, no debe existir frontera alguna. Así pues, para esta edición visitamos la Bienal Mexicali 2013 en la ciudad de Los Ángeles y les traemos todo sobre esta serie de exhibiciones. También contamos con la valiosa participación de Jill Marie Holslin, maestra de la Universidad de San Diego y periodista de Norteamérica, que decidió mudarse a la ciudad de Tijuana, encontrando inspiración entre los callejones de esta ocupada ciudad. Como resultado, una serie de hermosas fotografías que capturan lo crudo, cotidiano y parte de la historia de Tijuana. Además, un interesante tema sobre los beneficios de las moras azules, el calendario de los eventos más importantes de la región y mas. ¡Disfrútenla! ESDE QUE ME MUDE a Tijuana, en Junio del 2011, he caminado por las calles y callejones del centro de la ciudad fotografiando el grafiti, viéndolo cambiar y al mismo tiempo escribiendo sobre los significados múltiples de esta forma de arte. Lo que me fascina acerca de el grafiti es la vitalidad y energía que existe en estos lugares abandonados, espacios que la gente prefiere ignorar. Los callejones y esquinas aisladas están esparcidos con basura, pedazos de madera y ladrillos. La gente supone que estos lugares están abandonados. Pero si vives aquí, llegas a conocer a la gente que viven en estos callejones y áreas abandonadas. En todo Tijuana hay anuncios que dicen, “Prohibido tirar basura.” Pienso que es chistoso que la ciudad hace un esfuerzo por evitar la basura publicando una interdicción. El concepto de mi exposición es investigar estos lugares—por medio de mis fotos—y mostrar ”lo que queda” en los callejones de Tijuana.

Muchas veces los grafiteros llegan a un lugar a pintar, y pintan, se van, y jamás regresan. “Lo que queda” es un concepto que se abre a las dos dimensiones—el espacio y el tiempo. “Lo que queda” es la imagen en la memoria, la foto, el video de pintar, hasta las historias que contamos y que seguimos contando. De esta manera, “lo que queda” adjunta el espacio y el tiempo— todo el pasado, presente y futuro de un espacio que se queda en la pared. La foto participa en la historia de los espacios urbanos, documentando la expresión efímera de esta vida cotidiana. El nombre de la exposición, “Callejones de Tijuana,” nos señala los espacios más olvidados de la ciudad, espacios que han sido considerados “espacios muertos,” sin valor, sucios y abandonados. Norman Klein, un urbanista de Los Ángeles, California, identifica a los espacios vacíos como “miembros fantasmas.” El miembro fantasma es la percepción de sensaciones de que un miembro amputado todavía está conectado al cuerpo y está funcionando con el resto de éste; se cree que esto se debe a que el cerebro sigue recibiendo mensajes de los nervios que originalmente llevaban los impulsos del miembro perdido. INCE I FIRST MOVED to Tijuana in June of 2011, I’ve been walking through the streets and alleys of the city, photographing the graffiti and watching it change. What’s fascinating to me about graffiti is what it shows us about the vitality of these spaces that most people ignore. Alleys and broken down, out of the way street corners in Tijuana are littered with trash, abandoned buildings, or piles of old wood and bricks. And most people assume that these places are totally abandoned. But if you live here, you get to know the people who live in these alleys and abandoned areas. The concept of my exhibition is to explore these spaces—through my photos—and document “that which remains” in the alleys of Tijuana. Often, graffiti writers arrive at a spot to paint, they paint, and they leave, and they don’t come back again. “That which remains” can be the remembered image, the photograph, or a video of painting, or even the stories we tell and continue to tell. In this way, “that which remains” links space and time—the past, present and future of a space remains inscribed on the wall. The photograph participates in the history of these urban spaces, documenting these ephemeral expressions of everyday life. The name of the exhibition “Tijuana Alley Art,” gestures to the forgotten spaces of the city, more often than not considered dead spaces, without value, dirty and abandoned. Norman Klein, a Los Angeles urban historian, identifies these empty spaces as “phantom limbs.” The phantom limb is the perception that an amputated limb of the body is still connected. The subject feels physical sensations, as though the limb is still functioning along with the rest of the body. Klein notes that the traces of the past function like phantom limbs: these “dead” urban spaces continue to provoke stories, personal histories, mythologies—histories that are incited by the very absence of what once was there. Thus, these spaces and what remains there point in two directions: first to the past, bearing witness to once thriving, vital communities. And secondly, to the future, as those of us who wander through these spaces create new communities and find new uses for the walls and sidewalks and alleys.

Klein writes: “The “phantom limb” is often an empty lot where a building once stood, perhaps on Sunset Boulevard. Scraps of lathe and facade mix in piles with broken brick. The foundation is momentarily a ruin, like a photo of someone’s toothless mouth held wide open. The grading left by the bulldozer’s form ridges along the dust. It seems that if you could simply rest your ear close enough to the point where the blades have sheared away the joists, there might be the faint echo of a scream, or a couple talking at breakfast. Your imagination tries to see those people, based on the evidence, but doesn’t find enough at first. A car passes. Someone watches through the windshield for an instant, as it they knew who used to live here. But no conversation is supposed to take place. The cars graze at the light, and disappear.” It has been said that the streets are the best galleries of the city. In fact, the alleys of Tijuana’s downtown are living galleries, the art is painted over, and new images appear. Paintings on the wall and those that are erased still exist together in our memory, in history, in our stories.

Pedacitos de madera podrida junto a ladrillos rotos, los cimientos que quedan se encuentran en ruinas, como si fuera un viejo con la boca abierta sin dientes. Las excavaciones de las motoconformadoras hacen ranuras y surcos en la tierra. Parece que se pueda oír la conversación de una pareja desayunando, o el eco

débil de un grito, si se pudiera acercar hasta el punto donde el cuchillo de la maquina cortó la vigueta. Tu imaginación quiere ver a la gente, basada en los indicios que quedan, pero no encuentra lo suficiente… Pasa un carro. Alguien mira por el parabrisas, como si supiera quien ha vivido aquí. Pero nadie habla. Los carros hacen una pausa en el semáforo y se van.” Dice la gente que las calles son las mejores galerías de la ciudad. De hecho, estos callejones del centro de Tijuana son galerías vivas, el arte está encimado y borrado por nuevas imágenes que aparece . Las imágenes que están en la pared y aquellas que son borradas ya existen en nuestra memoria, en la historia y en nuestras historias.

EVER BETTER apply this phrase of Aristotle, because we often associate art with a fairly square stereotype of beauty. It fits more like a glove, when we go to the Vincent Price Art Museum, where 33 artists displayed their works at the MexiCali Biennale 2013, whose theme can be scabrous for some and artistic for others… cannibalism.

UNCA MEJOR aplicada esta frase de Aristóteles, pues muchas veces asociamos el arte con un estereotipo bastante cuadrado de la belleza. Queda aún más como anillo al dedo, cuando acudimos al Museo de Arte Vincent Price, donde 33 artistas expusieron sus obras en la Bienal MexiCali 2013, cuyo tema puede ser escabroso para algunos y artístico para otros… El Canibalismo. ¿Qué es el canibalismo? Es curioso, el canibalismo como tal, se refiere al acto o la práctica de alimentarse por seres de la misma especie, y aunque se refiere a cualquier animal que realice esta acción, text by cristina mayorga images by paulina martinez

generalmente le llamamos caníbal a un ser humano que se alimenta de otro ser humano, y más llamativo es, que tal vez caníbales somos todos, porque hemos llegado al punto de que como raza humana, nos comemos a otros humanos con nuestros actos y palabras. Analizando esto, tal vez el canibalismo como lo conocemos y tememos, es menos común y dañino que el canibalismo que protagonizamos a diario con otros seres de nuestra misma especie. Por eso no es de sorprenderse que 33 artistas tengan visiones diferentes sobre el tema, como una propuesta de ser el camino a seguir para

un nuevo modelo de la práctica avant-garde. El canibalismo en el nuevo mundo fue una de las razones principales para el colonialismo, pero no olvidemos que todo es una cadena alimenticia, y mientras quienes colonizaban al pueblo indígena, “para salvarlo” de sus prácticas movidas por sus creencias y cultura, entre ellas los sacrificios humanos y el canibalismo, vendrían a su vez a convertirse en caníbales de una cultura milenaria, al tratar de borrar lo que para ellos era deleznable. Y la cadena alimenticia sigue, pues en esta óptica del canibalismo, nos comemos a nuestra

misma especie todo el tiempo. Esta exposición se refiere a eso, al consumo de la imagen de las personas, de las posesiones, la cultura, las religiones, las creencias, los valores, los principios, incluso, al consumo de la voluntad de otras personas para un bien propio. Por eso, desde el momento de ingresar a la Bienal MexiCali 2013, los visitantes, previo consentimiento, colocan su cabeza en una abertura ovalada en un panel de acero, donde una cámara documentará su rostro, obra del artista Sergio Bromberg. Y el coordinador Ed Gómez, no puede evitar recordar una anécdota que vivió en el cruce fronterizo hacia Tijuana donde se le realizó un escaneo de retina, “eso es canibalismo, pues tu no tienes control sobre cómo tu imagen se utiliza”.

What is cannibalism? Curiously, cannibalism as such, refers to the act or practice of feeding from creatures of the same species, and although it refers to any animal that performs this action, generally we call cannibal a human that eats other human being, and more striking is that perhaps we are all cannibals, because we have reached the point that as a human race, we eat other humans with our actions and words. Analysing this, perhaps cannibalism as we know and fear, is less common and damaging than cannibalism on-going daily with others of our own species. So it is not surprising that 33 artists have different views on the subject, as a proposal to be the way forward for a new model of avant-garde practice. Cannibalism in the New World was one of the main reasons for colonialism, but do not forget that everything is a food chain, and

while those who colonized the indigenous people, "to save themâ&#x20AC;? from their practices driven by their beliefs and culture, among them human sacrifice and cannibalism, would come in turn to become cannibals of an ancient culture, while trying to erase what to them was despicable. And the food chain continues, because in this view of cannibalism, we eat our own kind all the time. This exhibition itself alludes to that, the consumption of the image of people, possessions, culture, religions, beliefs, values, principles, even the consumption of the will of

others for our own good. So, from the moment of entering the MexiCali Biennial 2013, visitors, previous consent, placed their head in an oval opening in a steel panel, where a camera will document their faces by the artist Sergio Bromberg. And the coordinator Ed Gomez cannot help but remember an anecdote lived in the border crossing into Tijuana where a retina scan was performed, "that's cannibalism, because you have no control over how your image is used." Although the title may be morbid and even bring to mind horror movies, names of characters like Hannibal Lecter and other horror true stories, this has more to do with cultural issues, especially for Mexican society. and is reflected in his work “Maquiladora”, where he enclosed in a glass box, a picture of a factory where thousands of Mexicans worked for U.S. companies. Labour exploitation, human abuses are forms of cannibalism. To Ed Gomez, coordinator of the exhibition, ¨corporations are persons, and corporations eat other people, in a strange way, capitalism is very cannibal ". We could observe many forms of cannibalism in this MexiCali Biennial 2013, each artist had their own view, and surely we each have our own vision. With different perspectives of the same subject, noisy, morbid, dark, taboo, weird, ancient, instinctive, religious, everyone can name it, the amazing thing is that perhaps none has to do, with the definition accepted by the Royal Academy of Spanish Language, or that published in dictionaries. It is very likely that you, right now are associating a form of cannibalism with behaviours of your own or one that has been observed and never thought it could be considered as such. The solution to every problem begins with identification, eat ourselves as a species, is something that somehow has to stop, sometimes you have to relax, fill the mind of art, no matter what power or manifestation, at times, but often we have to suppress human appetite and feed on things that do not turn us into cannibals...

Aunque el título puede resultar incluso morboso y traer a nuestra mente películas de horror, nombres de personajes como Hannibal Lecter y demás historias terroríficas de la vida real, esto tiene que ver más con cuestiones culturales, sobre todo, para la sociedad mexicana. El artista Dominic Paul Miller expone su visión de canibalismo y lo refleja en su obra Maquiladora, donde encierra en una caja de cristal, una foto de una fábrica donde trabajan miles de obreros mexicanos para compañías estadounidenses. La explotación laboral, el abuso humano, son formas de canibalismo. Para Ed Gómez, coordinador de la exposición, ¨las corporaciones son personas, y las corporaciones comen otras personas, de una forma extraña, el capitalismo es muy caníbal”. En esta Bienal MexiCali 2013 se

pudieron observar muchas formas de canibalismo, cada artista tenía una visión diferente, y con seguridad cada uno tenemos nuestra propia visión. Con diferentes ópticas de un mismo tema, ruidoso, morboso, tenebroso, tabú, extraño, instintivo, religioso, cada quien puede ponerle un nombre, lo sorprendente de todo, es que tal vez con lo que menos tenga que ver, es con la definición aceptada por la Real Academia de la Lengua, o publicada en los diccionarios.

Es muy probable que usted, en estos momentos esté asociando una forma de canibalismo con una conducta propia o ajena que ha podido observar y que jamás pensó podría ser considerada como tal. La solución a todos los problemas comienza por identificarlos, comernos a nosotros mismos como especie, es algo que de alguna forma tiene que parar, a veces hay que relajarnos, llenar la mente de arte, tal vez, hay que suprimir el apetito humano y alimentarnos de cosas que no nos conviertan en caníbales…

Alvaro Pantoja ALVARO PANTOJA BUSCH a.k.a. Pantoffel is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from Santiago - Chile. His work has been exhibited in digital and printed publications in various countries, also has taken part in exhibitions in various galleries around the world. His illustrations have a kind of a child look; he thinks that everyone should have something of a child, something that we should never lose.

LVARO PANTOJA BUSCH alias Panprofiles toffel es un ilustrador y diseñador gráfico independiente de Santiago - Chile. Su trabajo ha sido exhibido en publicaciones digitales e impresas en diversos países del mundo, también ha formado parte en exposiciones colectivas en distintas galerías alrededor del mundo. OURTNEY BERNARD is an illustrator hailing from a small town on the cusp of Flint, Michigan, USA. Her parents encouraged creativity and storytelling well into her high school years, and she eventually found her way to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where she majored in Illustration and minored in Entertainment Arts. Since graduating from CCS in 2012 and striking out into the "real world," she has been working as a freelance illustrator in New York City.
