Pressões devidas aos visitantes/turismo A fruição do Património, de forma viva, intensa e acolhedora, implica proximidade e contacto com os locais visitados, os seus espaços e os seus espólios e a participação, eventualmente interactiva, nas suas vivências e funcionalidades, quer sejam recuperadas da sua história para reavivar a memória dos factos mais marcantes, quer sejam relativas aos novos usos dos edifícios. Esta fruição não pode ser sinónimo, nem de uso abusivo, nem de degradação acentuada mas, por mais responsável que seja, implica desgaste e fadiga pelo uso que, por pequenos que sejam, merecem atenção especial num património em que o tempo de vida não pode ser estabelecido ou limitado. Surgem, assim, como pressões mais evidentes devidas ao turismo ou visitantes, as que resultam do uso em condições correntes e responsáveis e que, no caso dos edifícios e espaços das áreas candidatas, se combatem com três tipos de medidas: hierarquização dos espaços e tipos de visita; condicionamento criterioso de acessos, protecção física de zonas mais vulneráveis ou mais solicitadas. Com a hierarquização de espaços e tipos de visita pretende-se limitar o número de visitantes, o seu

The hierarchization of space and types of visit is intended to restrict the number of visitors, duration and periodicity of visits in the areas most sensitive to changes in environmental conditions (such as is the case with the Joanine Library), or to other factors. The rigorous regulation of access circumscribes circulation areas more sensitive to use, namely by wear on ground surfaces, but provides observation alternatives whenever possible. Reversible measures for physical protection, sometimes involving sacrificial coatings, are crucial for preventing the above-mentioned unavoidable wear. The implementation of such measures of physical protection must be made according to standards of material and aesthetic quality that are suitable to its temporary purposes, at reasonable cost, and without disturbing the reading of the heritage and its most relevant identity features. This is the philosophy established for the interventions planned for the University of Coimbra, and can already be seen in recent interventions. These measures assume that all visitors and users behave in a responsible manner, and this can be achieved through information, awareness-building
