Neither the geographical context nor historical records justify specific concerns in the nominated areas regarding volcanic activity, ground movement or prolonged or exceptional snow. Coimbra is located in a moderate earthquake intensity zone, well characterized in scientific and technical terms and well framed by the applicable national and European legislation in force. The older buildings in the nominated areas display the vulnerability that is common to all stone masonry constructions, but their performance over the years, namely during and after the earthquake of 1969 (the most serious one in Coimbra in the last half-century), has shown not only their significant structural resistance, but also a reduced sensitivity in terms of secondary or functional deterioration. This behaviour can be explained by the general morphology of the buildings and their construction method: homogenous structures with 2 or 3 floors, with strong rectangularity and internal bracing, thick walls with robust angles and frequent transversal rock anchors in the façades. Reflecting the Pombaline influence, these features are present in many of the buildings that were constructed or remodelled in the late 18th century.
