Caracterização artística e arquitectónica Art and Architecture Nascido da Reforma Pombalina, em 1773, o edifício da Imprensa ocupava originalmente uma vasta área, ainda hoje perceptível. As obras de maior volume iriam concentrar-se na área claustral da Sé e no novo edifício, de dois andares, com pequeno pátio, virado para a via pública.
The Pombaline Reform led to the construction of this building, in 1773. It occupied a wide area, still perceivable today. The major works were concentrated in the cathedral cloisters’ area and in the new two-storey building with a small courtyard facing the street.
A fachada principal é dotada de portal encimado de frontão triangular, simples, idêntico ao da actual porta exterior do claustro da Sé, e está ladeado de cinco janelas de cada lado, no piso térreo, por onze janelas no segundo piso e doze óculos ovais no último. O topo do edifício é rematado por urnas, sendo as das extremidades de maiores dimensões.
The main façade has a portal crowned by a simple triangular pediment, identical to the present external door of the cathedral’s cloisters, and it has five windows on each side on the ground floor, eleven windows on the second floor and twelve oval eyewindows on the top floor. The top of the building is decked with urns, the ones on the edges being larger than the rest.
Os interiores deste edifício principal foram sendo alterados consoante as necessidades e funções dos serviços que albergaram ao longo dos tempos, permanecendo ainda uma escadaria de aparato que dava acesso ao pavimento alto do claustro, onde se encontravam as oficinas da Imprensa.
The interior of the main building was altered several times according to the needs and functions of the services that they housed throughout the years, but a grand staircase still remains. This provided access to the upper floor of the cloisters, where the printing shops were located.

Proposta de intervenção Proposed Intervention O edifício manteve a função original até 1934. Em 1999, foi reactivada a Imprensa da Universidade e instalada no edifício que ocupara anteriormente.
The building maintained its original purpose until 1934. In 1999, the University Press was reactivated and established in the building that it had previously occupied.
Em 2003 foi realizado um projecto de reabilitação do edifício.
In 2003 a project for the rehabilitation of the building was made.
A proposta agora apresentada tenta recuperar o discurso arquitectónico da reconstrução realizada no século XVIII, prevendo o desmonte e/ou demolição pontual de estruturas, com vista à melhor compreensão da espacialidade original e eliminando algumas intervenções de natureza duvidosa.
The present proposal seeks to recover the architectural programme of the reconstruction carried out in the 17th century. It involves the deconstruction and/or demolition of selected structures, in order to provide a clearer understanding of the original spatial arrangement, and the elimination of imprudent interventions.
A função actual mantém-se.
