Editor's Letter Teaching design is always a challenging task. How can you teach design principles appropriately? How can you enhance creativity? How can you inspire students to create casual designs with responsibility? The answer to these questions is by instructing students to create and execute effectively so they live the real life experience of graphic design as something practical. For the first time and as part of our Publication Design course, we are publishing and creating a new magazine titled, UNeed!t. To achieve an excellent and creative outcome, I delegated to each individual student different responsibilities that made up our magazine team: managing director, creative director, photography director, illustrator, advertising director, and copy editor. Each one of students was in charge of and responsible for one these positions mentioned. And that’s not all, from the creation of the name, the design, the concept, the content and every other aspect of this magazine, my students were the ones who decided it all.

Claudio Castillero EDITOR-IN-CHIEF claudiocastillero@raffles-design-institute.com

My role in here has been to guide them and to merge everything in a professional way so this excellent magazine you have in your hands now is something to read and enjoy which says to the world “Here are the designers of today and tomorrow from Surabaya”. We hope you enjoy reading UNeed!t magazine as much as we enjoyed creating it.

D E S I G N INTERVIEW

Renata

Owen

Indonesian graphic designer

B renataowen.daportfolio.com behance.net/renataowen renataowen10@gmail.com

orn in 1991 in Surabaya, Renata has been interested in graphic design since secondary school. Graduating from school in 2009 she continued to study visual graphic design in Ciputra University Surabaya. Right after her third semester, Renata become a graphic design freelancer and in 2012 she secured an internship with LeBoYe design in Jakarta. Renata also worked on the redesigned AQUA bottle label illustration for the companies 40th AQUA Anniversary project. The Aqua bottles with the new label design have been in distribution since April 2013. Who is the one who encourage you to become a graphic designer? For me it is more precise to “what” makes me become a graphic designer. Actually it begun from my hobby of drawing since elementary school. But at that time I didn’t have any aim to become a graphic designer. In my last year of last senior high school, my main aim was to get into this course even though there was a dilemma for me to choose between architectural or visual communication design.

How would you describe the style of your design? Actually it is quite hard to explain my style according to my opinion. Style is something that always changes along the way with our skill development.

Passionately Beautiful Indonesia Illustration

Arguably, my style is illustrative design. So it is more inclined to art nouveau because I use a lot of detail in floral ornamental. For color use, I prefer youthful color but still have a vintage-look.

How were you as a design student? I take every assignment as a Challenge, so I take it quiet seriously while doing my assignment. However, there are some assignments that I don’t really take seriously, especially in 3D animation, as long as I get a B+ anyway. For me, if the subject is important for my future, I will take it seriously. My favorite subjects are art history, typography, and branding projects. Branding projects are really challenging for me.

How much time do you need to finish every project? Actually it depends on the project itself. But for every project, it will take two to three months to finish. For a big project such as the AQUA project, it took two months. For an individual project, I need one day for sketching and one to two days for finishing. To be honest my eyes and mind are always tired when doing projects. But the tiredness that I feel lately is doing the printing process because sometimes the material and the result is out of my will and sometimes I get really tired of waiting when it is lunch time for the printing staff. My way to overcome the tiredness is imagining the final result of my product. I don’t have any idea why my mood is back to normal when I imagine that.

Can you tell us a little story about the 40th Annual AQUA design? It began from an agency email that I received last October 2012. This agency was contacted by AQUA to search for a designer. To be honest I felt a dilemma at that time because I also had to do my project for final semester. But right after I knew that it was for AQUA, I accepted it straightaway. Then they asked me for three sketches in three days so I done one sketch for each day. Then it continued to a color and revision session. The project finished before last Christmas and I done this project to coincide with my university project. So I did it every weekend (Friday- Sunday)

a portfolio project for internship application at LeBoYe, Jakata- Indonesia

I take every assignment as a challenge and the university project on every other day. Even though this project is done, sometimes they asked me to make a few more projects such as the AQUA billboard. Somehow I felt a little bit shocked that AQUA wrote my name on the bottle. This totally made a huge impact for me, not only for experience and income, but I also got big exposer from all parties. I feel proud for them that they really want to respect every young persons artwork.

Who do you want to collaborate with? Actually I’ve been dreaming of collaborating with my boyfriend. He is an illustrator and uses more realistic styles while I am non-realist illustrator. So that’s why I really want to mix our skills to cover each weak point. Unfortunately, we are still busy with our own jobs.

What are you working on right now? For now, I’m focusing on my final project till this June. The project is making an illustration book which

14

contains some pictures of the visualizations from poetry. I also plan to use this as part of my portfolio when applying for work with a publisher.

What is your future project?

Definitely I will continue to work on my client’s projects and after I pass university, I’m planning on applying for some jobs to get some experience. I also plan to make some artwork for an exhibition to increase my public profile.

Any advice for design student that wants to become a succesful illustrator? The first thing is practice a lot, because without practice, we might not get to be what we want to be. Then always search for references of illustrators and designers that are already known in the world. The most important thing is not to become too arrogant because there will always be a person who is better than you. My final piece of advice is don’t be afraid to upload your work onto some community websites, because in this advanced age, we won’t get to be known by potential clients if we don’t have an online portfolio.

HEALTH

YOGA

Yoga is a Sport, too !

...Really!

Many people doubt the effectiveness of doing yoga as a sport which is able to shape an ideal body and burn fat like other common sports. Take soccer or swimming, for example. We know for sure that these sports can shape an ideal body and burn fat since the results are pretty obvious and well-known in the form of famous athletes. But yoga? Can yoga be as effective as other sports?

W

hat is yoga? This particular exercise is not really wellknown among teens and young adults. Society takes yoga as one for old people. But is it really for elders only? Yoga is an activity which consists of slow and gentle body movements. You might be wondering how can such movements can be as effective as other sports. See, the slow and gentle movements in yoga affect the flexibility of the inside and outside muscles of the body. The effect might not be spontaneous, but with discipline and firm self-motivation to do yoga regularly you can slowly see that the result is as good as doing any other sports. You might be wondering what the advantage is to choose yoga rather than other sports. Well, the fact that it is a slow exercise will not burden

16

your feet to support your weight. Try comparing it to jogging or running, which will make your feet support your weight in an instant every time you step on the ground. People with heavier weights will feel the burden of their weights on their legs more. This is not recommended as it will hurt their knees. By doing yoga, you will also avoid the yoyo phenomena. This is a common occurrence of the decreasing of body weight when you’re doing sports and the sudden increasing of it when you’re not. Other sports tend to cause this phenomena, but not yoga. The reason is because the metabolism of the body will be normalized with all the exercise of yoga. The body will become fit and healthy which results to the ideal body weight. It meant that skinny people will not get any skinnier while doing yoga.

The weight will stay in its ideal state, not over and not under. There is a saying: ‘yoga is a strong medicine, but it is a slow one’. The problem with teens and young adults nowadays is that we want everything in an instant. We want optimum results in a short period of time. Well, yoga doesn’t work that way, mind you. This exercise needs discipline and self-motivation to be done regularly. Your ideal body needs to be shaped with efforts. It won’t come with a half-hearted attempt. The will to do it needs to come from your own mind. Weak motivation will not afford yourself the luxury of getting an ideal body. Once you do it regularly, though, it will become a good habit that brings health in your life. As the

above saying, it is a slow process, but once you get a grip of it, it will become a strong medicine that will make you healthy.

and concentrate more at school or work. Not only will you get an ideal body, you will get good achievements as well.

Another thing, yoga is not only about physical activities. In it there are also mental exercises to reach the balance between the mind, body, and soul. That means it’s not only beneficial for your outer beauty, but inner beauty as well. Advantageous, don’t you think? Doing yoga can make you focus

Yoga is as effective as any other sports to shape the body and burn fat. You just need a strong mind to do it constantly. Oh, and it will increase your patience, too. There are a lot of advantages for doing yoga, physically and mentally. Do you know that people who do yoga regularly tends to look younger than others of the same age? They are more flexible, stronger, and energetic, too. No need to worry about your friends who said that this sport is said as one for elders. The result is as good as you may get.

Yoga is as effective as any other sports to shape the body and burn fat.

Here is a little sneak peek to some of the movements in yoga:

Ardhamatsyedryasna: exercising the nerves around the spine to the pancreas (preventing diabetes mellitus) and the kidney (preventing kidney stones).

Bhujangasana: cobra pose. Get rid of gasses from the stomach and toxic from the body and straightened the spine.

Trikonasana: exercising the flexibility of the abs, waist, and spine.

Uttanapadhasana: this pose requires the legs to be inclined upwards around thirty degrees to train the abs.

17

Eka padhangustasana: getting flexibility for legs and spine. It is also an exercise for body balance.

E N T E R TA I N M E N T INTERVIEW

DARRYL WEZY Indonesian Singer

D

arryl Wezy was born in Jakarta and grew up musically exposed since he was kid, influenced by his parents addiction towards 70s music. He found his passion in music after watching MTV in the 90s and he starts to collect cassettes ever since. His stage name, Darryl Wezy, is a pseudonym name that he got when he was daydreaming at high school during recess time.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

When did you figure out you can sing?

I was born in Jakarta, 5 July 1989. I am the youngest and I have two brothers. I’m interested with children and fantasy books, write the songs and collecting the albums (CD and cassettes) since I was a kid. I never had any best friend before and now I found them at the college.

He stated that his music has been influenced mostly by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, The Free Design, Pulp, Ash, The Cardigans, Weezer, The Concretes, The Lightning Seeds, The High Llamas, Sondre Lerche, Sufjan Stevens, SORE, and White Shoes And The Couples Company.

Yes, I do. I always write my music alone since 2003 when I was 13.

When my friends give their comments every time I play my new songs with my guitar. I don’t know, but they always say like, “Man, you’ve got a cool song and natural voice! You should find a producer soon!” or “Man, is that your voice? Why it is so different...”, and I was like, “Really? Am I talented enough for music...?” For me, that’s the same question until today.

Do you write your own songs?

Who is your musical inspiration? My heroes in music are The Beatles, Ash, The Lightning Seeds, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Cardigans, Sondre Lerche, The Free Design, The Mamas and The Papas, Melanie C, and many more! When did you first start singing? I don’t know exactly, but the first time I built a MySpace page for my music, it was 2007 and I recorded my voice and guitar roughly, and then published them on my page. At that moment, I was thinking... I should learn how to sing.

18

How long have you been singing? I’ve been singing since I found Ash and Billy Gilman and that was in 2001 when I was 11. Tim Wheeler from Ash and Billy Gilman are my favorite vocalists ever since I was a kid. I always sing their songs in the bathroom.

Do you have any albums that you are working on?

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Besides my debut album “Maze of Fears”, I just published my first single with Andezzz called “Together Again”, after that I will go back into the studio for my new single in Bahasa Indonesian, it’s called “Kemarau Terakhir” then it will be published on iTunes only as “Maze of Fears (iTunes Edition)”. Soon!

Distract yourself with the things you like to do such as eating, drinking, reading, or even joking with your band mates. Take a deep breath and watch people’s eyes around you and pretend that you have conquered them.

Beside singing, do you play any musical instruments? Yes, I play guitar. Who else in your family sings? My mother. Do you get nervous before a performance? How do you control it? Always. And it makes me sweaty even the event has a lot of air conditioners inside. I control it by reading comic or eating something.

Tell us about the buzz you are have in Japan? The buzz in Japan is very nice. My debut album, “Maze of Fears” was released under Kobe-based independent label called Production Dessinee on the 24 April 2013. Not long after the release date, I was featured in Sankei Express (they said it’s one of the top 5 national newspapers in Japan), Billboard Japans website, and Madame Figaro Japan, a fashion and culture magazine. My album also displayed with a good visual merchandising in the record stores such as Tower Records Shibuya, which

is something that I can’t get in Indonesia actually. Suffice to say, I never expected to release my album internationally, but I have always loved Japanese culture. I always imagine my song would be the original soundtrack of an Anime series someday and now, suddenly I got my album released exclusively with new artwork and packaging design in Japan. Somehow, I was thinking it’s too much for me. But anyway, the important thing is that I should remember, they appreciate me very well and it’s such an honor for me to be released in Japan. Also FYI, back to 2001 – 2004, I was getting bullied by my schoolmates because they said that I was a crazy kid because I wrote songs alone and drew my album artwork. I was telling one of my friends in class about my dream to be a singer-songwriter who wants release an album outside Indonesia someday, and the next day, people laughed at me. Since then, I was always getting bullied in the school. But after all, I kept dreaming and believing, and now it’s happened.

E N T E R TA I N M E N T INTERVIEW

Valiant Budi Vabyo Indonesian Writer Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I grew up in the artistic family. They graciously let me spend most of my childhood smelling the colourful paint, sleeping among the tangled threads, acting like a dead elephant to seek attention, and writing poetry on the house wall. I believe all of these experiences have formed my

creative personality as I live with a lot of questions and fantasies. As an adult, I’ve been living my life with eclectic experiences. I started my career in the media as a radio announcer, script writer, and ended as creative director. Then I joined with a national publishing company as a book editor. I also worked as a barista on international coffee shop in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. But now I’m proudly declaring myself as an Indonesian author and a song writer. And..oh, I’m also an owner of small cafe in Bandung!

20

What inspired you to write your first novel? I accidentally wrote my first novel; Joker—There’s a joke in every sorrow, as I worked as script writer. There were lots of my drafts that being rejected by my Program Director. I collected that rejection and compiled it, gave it a plot and conflicts, then... tadaaaa.. all those ‘rubbish’ drafts became one manuscript. This book itself is about how we’re sometimes blinded and alienated by our own ambition as life’s like playing cards. But life is more complicated than playing the joker or of any cards, because sometimes things are not what we seem. So overall, yeah, this was all inspired by my quarter-life crisis.

What was the hardest part of writing your novel?

How long does it take you to write a novel?

Killing my favorite character(s). But let me tell you the darkest secret: the hardest part is right after you finish writing and the book released: facing the hatred of people. I don’t mind the harsh critique as I believe no work’s perfect. Even God has been criticized for his creatures. But some ‘critical’ people bombard us—as an artist like terrorists with words and acts of hatred such as deflating my car’s tires. I’m a writer not a sinner.

I regularly take 1-2 years for one novel, including freezing the draft phase between the writing-editing process, so when I look back the script I can see its weakness and ‘re-heat’ it again so it can be well-cooked.

What genre are your novels? Psycho-Sexy-Pop. How long have you been writing? I’ve been writing since 2007 as a professional. Are you a full-time or part-time writer? Since 2011, I decided to make this profession as a full-time job, I write more than just what’s required for office hours on daily basis. Who are your target readers? Readers who aren’t afraid of knowing the truth—who smile heartedly even when feeling down to the ground and who would bounce highly after the fall.

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers? Writer’s block is bullshit. Don’t blame this bullshit for your laziness. Let’s act like the rock star; kill the stage and move our ass off. So please, keep writing what you like, let the finger dance, make the paper dirty. What are your current projects? I’ve been writing my sequel for Kedai 1001 Mimpi. I want to have it published by the end of this year. I’m also involved with some song recording projects. How many novel have you written? which is your favorite? Why?

2

Can you tell us about your writing activities for group ad singer like S4 and SOS? It began when a Korean music producer; Mr Louis Go, searched for an Indonesian song writer for S4’s first single which would be released with two languanges English and Indonesian. Then I gave him my portfolio and then we’re well-suited. So we did our first project together as he’s very open to my creative ideas. Then after S4 had debuted, they released the girl group version called S.O.S, and they still wanted me to get involved. So, here we are—having fun with the group! What do you plan for future projects?

I have written three novels, one non-fiction book, and five short stories for book compilation with other writers. My favorite book is Kedai 1001 Mimpi, because

3

it’s a true story about my working experiences as Indonesian worker in the Kingdom. I wrote it with tears and blood literally. But by this moment, I believe that ‘a blessing in disguise’ does exist as this book became a national best seller and has been nominated for several awards and made my previous novels has re-released again by readers’ request. It feels like God has pushed rewind button on my writing career, and I don’t really mind to re-playing the scenes.

I won’t tell, because revealing the future is taboo, haha! I plan to build my own studio for recording and writing which has a superduper big window overlooking the beach featuring the sunset, and in case you’re wondering, I adore the sunrise too, but since I’m a nocturnal creature I often miss the moment.

Valiant Budi Vabyo Novels: 1. Kedai 1001 Mimpi (Non Fiction 2011) 2.Joker, Ada Lelucon di Setiap Duka (Novel, 2007) 3. Bintang Bunting (Novel, 2008)

nervousness. In dogs’ cases, these conditions will cause them to salivate much more than usual. This will lead to the increase of drinking and urination. Their heartbeat will go faster, which will affect their muscle. Their body will have tremors and they will face difficulties to stand or walk. Severe cases may include trembling, vomiting, diarrhea, and even death.

Scary outcomes, as you can see. The effects may vary in criticalness based on the kind of chocolate they ate and the size of their body. Well, these conclude that the rumor is true. Chocolate is definitely bad for dogs. Never give chocolate to your pets. Keep them out of their reach. You might feel bad saying ‘no’ to those cute puppy eyes begging for the treat, but hey, it’s for their own health. Being firm to your pets is needed so they don’t act overly spoiled. The question is what if your dog accidentally eats chocolate? The best choice will be going to the nearest veterinarian at once. But what if there’s no vet nearby? Here are some things you can do to save your furry friend:

Chocolate for Dogs Ever heard the rumors about how chocolates are bad for dogs? Do you think it’s true? Perhaps you’re wondering how come humans eat chocolate just fine, while on the other hand can be bad when eaten by dogs. Is this rumor a fact or not? Well, this article will help you to see the truth regarding this matter.

C

hocolate is made from cacao beans. The beans are processed to become the kind of chocolates we see every day in stores. There are alkaloids contained in chocolate, such as theobromine, caffeine, and phenethylamine. The first element, theobromine, is the one dangerous for dogs as it works to stimulate the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and increase blood pressure. Actually it’s bad not only for dogs, but also for other animals as well. See, animals digest theobromine much slower than human does. Therefore, the effect can becomes severe and toxic inside their bodies, while it won’t be seen as that big of a deal inside humans’ bodies. Symptoms of theobromine poisoning are restlessness, hyperactivity, excitement, and

26

1. Make them vomit. The fastest way is by sticking your finger down their throat. Now, you shouldn’t feel disgusted. It’s your pet, isn’t it? Vomiting will help removing the chocolate from their system. 2. Try to make them eat a small amount of activated charcoal. This will help binding the theobromine and keeping it away from the bloodstream. You can mix the charcoal with water. 3. Make your dog consume a lot of water. Don’t let them suffer from dehydration. Even after doing the aforementioned things, going to the vet is still a good idea. After all, veterinarians know much more about this stuff and how to handle it than you do. Don’t hesitate to spend money on your pets. Losing some cash is still better than losing a dear friend, don’t you think so? Hope this article helps you. If you have a friend that still doesn’t aware of the danger of giving chocolates to their dogs, please tell them. Who knows, you might save a little fluffy ball from chocolate poisoning in the near future. Doing good deeds never hurts, right? ;D
