Optimismction

Optimism and confidence have been central to our approach to the pandemic. It is in this spirit that we are now reaching out to individuals who may wish to contribute to a project which, as well as delivering wonderful benefits to sport at Queen Anne’s, would amount to a confident statement about our future.

... a confident statement about our future.

...benefit every girl So, as we look to the future beyond the pandemic, we are hoping that generous friends can help us realise an ambitious vision that could bring great benefits to every girl in the school, now and in years to come.

Introduction

In 2019, we began fundraising for an ambitious scheme to transform the sports facilities at Queen Anne’s. Through reserves and borrowing, the school planned to fund £1M of the £1.5M project cost, leaving us with a fundraising challenge of £500K.

Of course, there is still uncertainty. We cannot guarantee that we will reach a position where funding this project is possible. But meeting our appeal target would be a hugely positive result to feed into the final decision process when the time comes, in the Spring.

By March 2020, we had raised £240K towards our target, thanks to some very generous parents who shared our vision. And then Covid struck. With so much uncertainty over finances, we paused the fundraising.

This means raising some ‘cornerstone’ pledges over the coming months, which is why we are now approaching individuals who we believe may share our vision, understand the sensitivities of the situation and be prepared to make a pledge on the understanding that this would only become a donation if we are able to proceed.

Tim Green

Now, having weathered the worst of the pandemic and with growing confidence in the school’s future finances, we intend to push on as we believe this scheme, with all that it will bring for the girls, is too good to shelve.

Lights, pitches, action A full-size 3G artificial turf pitch, lights and major landscaping work to create a set of high quality, level grass pitches with changing rooms and parking close by - this will be a big leap forward for Queen Anne’s sport.

Let’s give Queen Anne’s sport the facilities it deserves.

This is a development which will bring benefits to every Queen Anne’s girl. It will also strengthen the school’s links with the local community through the extensive community-use which will be possible.

The plan We plan to fill the current dip in our playing field, so that we can have four perfectly level pitches in addition to the artificial turf pitch. This would also allow for a 400m running track.

Fundraising

On the basis that, until we have planning permission and have raised sufficient funds, we cannot guarantee proceeding, we are asking for pledges, not donations. Thus, we will only request redemption of pledges when/if we are able to schedule the construction work.

Construction pitch Planning decision due

In all of this, the early, ‘pioneer’ pledges will be critically important to success because momentum generates further support.

Funding We plan to take out a bank loan of £1M (subject to trustees’ approval). As we will then be at our maximum borrowing level, we must rely on fundraising for the further £500K we will need to press ahead with the overall project.

Cornerstone pledges: the proposition The development we need to fund We are asking for pledges specifically to help fund the sports facilities projects outlined in this document. We will of course happily accept pledges restricted to specific elements of the development.

Communication We will keep our pioneer donors informed of progress, updating them on design details, costs and timings. This will include information about the progress of the fundraising.

Naming

In principle support

We will be happy to recognise the generosity of donors by naming elements of the scheme.

We will only ask individuals to redeem their pledges once we are certain that the scheme is going ahead.

Donor perspective

How much is a cornerstone pledge?

What happens if we fail to raise the full sum? A worst-case scenario would involve the school simply not proceeding with the development, in which case we would not ask donors to redeem their pledges. However, we will have the option to extend the fundraising period, or we may be able to reduce the overall scope or some cost elements of the scheme. Whatever happens, we will keep our donors fully informed.

Our fundraising is guided and overseen by a group of parents and friends - see the list of Appeal Committee members, opposite.

Cornerstone pledges range from £15K to £100K+. For instance, if 10 individuals pledge £25K each with Gift Aid, we could raise over £300K with Gift Aid: enough to inspire the wider support we need.
