HEAD COACH

Layne Schwier Interim Head Coach 13th Season | Wittenberg, ‘97 Layne Schwier takes over the helm of the cross country and track and field programs as interim head coach in 2015-16.

Schwier begins his 13th year with the Seahawks and served as a longtime assistant coach before his new appointment on July 27, 2015. He has been responsible for coaching the men’s and women’s distance programs during both the cross country and the track seasons.

Since Schwier’s arrival, UNCW’s distance runners have excelled, owning 120 spots on UNCW’s Top 10 all-time lists, with 12 individual school records and five relay records. He is also coaching the throwers, where his student-athletes have racked up 47 top-10 marks and five school records.

Schwier’s cross country squads have excelled in the classroom through the years. The women have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors 12 straight years. Individually, Schwier’s student-athletes have been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team 13 times.

One of Schwier’s protégés, Dylan Skinner, won the 800 Meters title and anchored the winning 4x400 relay at the 2014 CAA Championships. Skinner qualified for the NCAA Regionals, where he broke the 800 Meters record (1:48.27) and advanced to the quarterfinals. He was also named CAA Men’s Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

All-time greats Wil Zahorodny and Bob Vanderham also shined under Schwier’s tutelage. Zahorodny was named CAA Men’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year in 2012, while Vanderham defended his CAA Championship in the 800 Meters and competed in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

On the women’s side, Schwier coached prolific runners Lindsay Ester and Kathleen Casto. In 2010-11, Ester finished sixth at the CAA Cross Country Championships to earn AllCAA honors. Casto, meanwhile, established herself as one of the best in school history in 2009-10 when she set school records in both the 10K and the 1500 Meters. She collected a conference record en route to the CAA title in the 10K, qualifying for the opening round of the NCAA Championships.

In his first five years with the program, Schwier was also responsible exclusively for the throwers. The Seahawks achieved 27 All-CAA performances (12 individual titles), 25 IC4A/ECAC qualifiers (seven All-East performances and four Champions), 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, and broke five school records during that time. Four student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships in the five-year span, including the first for the women’s track & field program when UNCW T&F Hall of Famer Christie Schreckengost qualified in the javelin in 2004.

Schwier played a major role in the emergence of all-time great Anna Raynor in the javelin. With no experience in the event before coming to UNCW, Raynor concluded her career as a three-time All-American (11th at NCAA’s in 2005, fourth in 2006 and 2007), three-time CAA Champion and ECAC Champion, two-time Penn Relays Champion, as well as the CAA and UNCW record holder in the javelin. Raynor was selected CAA Track & Field Athlete-of-the-Year three straight seasons (2004-07) and was named Southeast Region Field Athlete-of-the-Year. In the summer of 2007, Raynor finished third at the USA National Championships.

As a member of Team USA, she claimed the silver medal at the NACAC Senior Games in El Salvador.

HEAD COACH In the last five years, Schwier has had five men run sub-1:50 in the 800 meters - an accomplishment unmatched by other state schools. In addition, former standout Bob Vanderham has embarked on a successful professional career, with two runner-up finishes in the 800 meters at the Dutch National Track & Field Championships.

Prior to arriving in Wilmington, Schwier spent two seasons with the Ball State women’s track & field program. During his stint with the Cardinals, Schwier coached Janee Langhorne to a Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship, where she also set a Mid-American Conference record in the Weight Throw. BSU also became the first MAC school to qualify a women’s team to the NCAA Cross Country National Championship.

Schwier also spent two years as assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, after beginning his career at Chillicothe (Ohio) High School as head coach of the cross country and track & field teams.

Schwier ran cross country and track for four years at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and was coached by 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Schul. Schwier completed his coursework for a Master’s Degree in Sport Biomechanics from Ball State.

Schwier is a member of the USTFCCCA and USA Track & Field. He holds USATF Level II Certification in Throws, Jumps, Combined Events, and Endurance. He is also a USATF Certified Level I Instructor.

Donald Thomas enters his 13th season at UNCW after spending eight years as an assistant coach at Maryland.

Former UNCW men’s track and field standout Alex Carradine returned to his alma mater in the fall of 2015 as an assistant coach with the program.

He coordinates the Seahawks recruiting and assists with coaching the sprinting and jumps events. His efforts in recruiting at UNCW have helped the Seahawks win four Colonial Athletic Association championships in 10 years.

Thomas, who coached the hurdlers and high jumpers in College Park; also recruited Maryland’s 1999-2000 Track & Field News nationally-ranked recruiting class.

At Maryland, Thomas coached Vanessa Jones to an Atlantic Coast Conference championship, an ECAC Championship and three NCAA championship appearances in the High Jump. In 2000, Jones reached the finals of the High Jump at the Olympic Trials. Thomas also trained Thema Napier to an ECAC Championship and NCAA Championship appearance in the 400 Hurdles. In 2002, Napier reached the finals of the USA Track & Field Championships in the 400 Hurdles.

Thomas has coached athletes that have qualified for the Olympic Trials, USA Championships, NCAA Championships; earned All-East, All-ACC, All-CAA Honors and won CAA Track & Field Championships. He is a USATF Level One certified coach.

The Raleigh, N.C., native and Sanderson High School graduate joined interim head coach Layne Schwier’s staff, giving the Seahawks another direct link to the successful program.

Carradine, 26, competed in the long jump and high jump at UNCW for four seasons before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science in May of 2011. He moved on to Texas A&M, where he served as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach for the Aggies and completed his Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology in College Station.

Carradine then accepted his first full-time coaching position as assistant women’s track and field coach at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich., and enjoyed immediate success in two seasons with the Wildcats. He coached two NCAA Division II All-Americans and eight All-Midwest Region honorees. One of his triple jumpers set a school record and Carradine demonstrated an ability to recruit student-athletes to one of the coldest regions of the country.

Carradine holds a USATF Level 1 certification and USTFCCA technical certification.

Vilija Bishop joined the UNCW athletic training staff in the Fall of 2014 and serves as athletic trainer with the cross country and track & field teams.

Adolfo Rivera joined the Seahawk family as a strength and conditioning coach in the Summer of 2015.

Bishop graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana/ Champaign in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. In 2011, she earned a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training at West Virginia University and worked as a graduate assistant at nearby Waynesburg University.

Before coming to the coast, Bishop spent three years as the men’s basketball athletic trainer at California University of Pennsylvania. She was a faculty member in the Health Sciences Department there.

Bishop is certified in the Graston Technique as a Corrective Exercise Specialist, and in the Selective Functional Movement Assessment.

Away from the office, Bishop enjoys cooking, exercising and traveling.

A native of Newburgh, N.Y., Rivera was a soccer studentathlete at Manhattan College from 2005-09 and played professionally for the America Teofilo Otoni club in Brazil from 2010-11.

Rivera began his strength and conditioning career as a Velocity Sports Performance Coach (2009-11) before accepting a position as Assistant Director of Sports Performance for the House of Sports (2011-13).

Rivera entered the collegiate ranks in 2012-13 as a strength and conditioning intern at Marist College, where he worked with the men’s and women’s soccer and football teams for the Red Foxes. Over the past two years, he has worked as a strength and conditioning assistant with the football and track and field teams at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Rivera, who earned his B.S. Degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Physical Therapy from Manhattan in 2009, holds certification with the NSCA and CSCS certifications.

HIGHLIGHTS 2014-15 MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS  Cam Walton was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and Cameron Shaw was selected as Most Outstanding Track Performer at the CAA Men’s Track and Field Championships.  The team captured first place in the Colonial Relays and second in the Seahawk Invitational.  The Seahawk featured five CAA Athlete-of-the-Week recipients in Cameron Shaw (3 times), Cody Love and Cam Walton.  The 4x100 relay team of Cameron Shaw, Cam Walton, Vincent Ragland and Brandon McLean set a school record with a time of 40.29 at the Charlotte Invitational.  Three Seahawks represented UNCW in the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Round at North Florida’s Hodges Stadium: Senior Cameron Shaw (100 and 200 Meters), senior Cam Walton (Long Jump), senior Aaron Combs (800 Meters). UNCW’s CAA Men’s Champions: Triple Jump, Cam Walton, 48-11.50 High Jump, Maurice Holmes, 6-7 100 Meters, Cameron Shaw, 10.55 400 Hurdles, Cody Love, 52.66 200 Meters, Cameron Shaw, 21.29 4x400 Relay, Jamar Collins-Hall, Aaron Combs, Trip Foreman, Cody Love, 3:14.06 The Seahawks featured 22 All-CAA performers on the men’s side:  The Seahawks featured three qualifiers in four events for the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla. TRIBUTE JIM SPRECHER | PUTTING SEAHAWK TRACK ON THE MAP When Jim Sprecher arrived at UNCW in the summer of 1992, he discovered a fledgling track and field program trying to find its way in the CAA and NCAA Division I ranks.

He changed all of that over 19 seasons with the Seahawks.

Sprecher coached UNCW to eight conference championships and numerous individual accomplishments during his tenure on the coast.
