The University

North Carolina at Greensboro was first chartered back on Feb. 18, 1891, as the State Normal and Industrial School. It was the first state-supported school for the higher education of women in North Carolina. Founded by Charles Duncan McIver, it became co-educational in 1963. Today, in its 120th year of existence, the campus covers 210 acres in downtown Greensboro and has an enrollment that exceeded 17,000 for the first time ever last year. Student-athletes at UNCG have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success over the years. Although the athletic department celebrated its 45th season in 2010-11, athletics at UNCG date back to the 1940s in the days before the university became co-ed. Golfer Nancy Porter, who went on to a successful pro career, is regarded as one of UNCG’s first student-athletes, competing in tournaments on the national level in the late 1940s. In 1963, as the university prepared to go co-ed, UNCG began to formally organize athletic teams. Women’s basketball, under head coach Ellen Griffin, women’s tennis, women’s golf and field hockey were started. LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann was on one of the early UNCG women’s golf teams. In 1967, UNCG began men’s athletics and the intercollegiate athletics program received formal recognition from the university. In the fall of 1967, the Spartan was adopted as the program’s mascot. In 1968, UNCG’s men’s teams joined the Dixie Athletic Conference, known today as the USA South Conference, on the NCAA Division III level. Women’s teams competed as part of the AIAW early on, with UNCG being one of the lead organizers of the organization. Two of the first men’s sports were basketball and bowling. In 1971, with the emergence of the five-player rule in women’s basketball, UNCG finished fourth in the National Collegiate Tournament. Two years later, the women’s golf team won the AIAW national title – UNCG’s first-ever team national crown. Porter coached the squad and future professional golfer Donna Horton White was on the squad. Since then, UNCG has enjoyed a number of successes: • Five national titles in men’s soccer during the 1980s and a runner-up finish in women’s tennis. • An unprecedented five-year move from Division III to Division II to Division I -- went from Division III in 1987, to Division II in 1988-90 and have been Division I since 1991. • A trip to the “Big Dance” – the NCAA men’s basketball tournament – in just its fifth year of Division I status. • Men’s soccer coach Michael Parker and women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee were the first to lead teams to the NCAA tournament in all three divisions. • A baseball squad built from scratch by Mike Gaski that made it to the NCAA tournament in just its fifth season of play. • A men’s soccer program that conquered all comers for two months to become the No. 1 team in the nation in 2004, the beginning of UNCG’s three straight NCAA tournament Round of 16 appearances and four in five years. • Kyle Hines, who became just the sixth player in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career. • Individuals like wrestler Dock Kelly, who overcame birth defects that left him without legs, qualifying for the NCAA Championship. • Students like Siggi Eyjolffson, who earned Academic All-American honors three times. • Men’s basketball games moved off campus to the Greensboro Coliseum, one of the premier facilities in the country. From major league pitcher Brian Moehler to MLS champion Alejandro Moreno to LPGA star Becky Morgan, Spartan alumni have gone on to successful careers in sports. That success isn’t just limited to the playing field, either. The late Doug Hamilton was one of the pioneers within MLS and played on the UNCG national championship teams of the 1980s. Eyjolffson returned to his native Iceland and is one of the top people in his native country’s soccer federation, currently serving as their women’s national team head coach. Spartan athletics has had its success stories over the years … and the best is yet to come.

fleming gymnasium - home of SPARTAN VOLLEYBALL The UNCG volleyball team plays its matches in Michael B. Fleming Gymnasium, located in the Health and Human Performance Building - a $16.2 million facility that opened on campus in June 1989. Before the 2006-07 season, Fleming Gym underwent a facelift to improve seating amenities. The new seating includes chairback seating on the lower half with bleacher bench seating in the upper half. In the summer of 2011, a project to overhaul the team locker room areas began. The project includes expanded, modernized space for numerous UNCG teams and also meeting areas for video breakdown and other activities. The gymnasium, which has seating for more than 1,800 for basketball and 1,200 for volleyball, was named on Dec. 1, 1994 for Fleming - a Greensboro civic leader whose advocacy at the highest levels of state government was instrumental in the construction of the HHP Building. The Spartan men's basketball team defeated William and Mary 84-71 that night. Spartan teams first occupied the gym during the 1989-90 academic year. The largest crowd to see an athletic contest in the gym was 2,302 for a men’s basketball game against Charleston Southern on Feb. 25, 1995. The Spartans defeated the Buccaneers, 98-70. Fleming Gymnasium has played host to various conference championship tournaments, including Big South volleyball in 1994 and 1995; Big South women’s basketball in 1994; Southern Conference women’s basketball in 1998 and 1999; SoCon wrestling in 1999; and SoCon volleyball in 2001 and 2008. In 2005, it housed the SoCon-ACC Wrestling Championships, also known as MatJam. Prior to the 1996-97 season, the Boston Celtics held their training camp in the facility.

For intercollegiate athletics, the HHP Building offers: - Fleming Gymnasium, which has three courts - A separate, two-court area which several teams use for practices - A weight-training area which includes Nautilus equipment and free weights - A spacious sports medicine area, which includes modern equipment to serve the university’s 18 teams - Locker rooms and team rooms for the Spartans, visitors and officials - Offices for coaches and athletics staff on the third (main) floor in two suites - Ticket office and concessions areas near the thirdfloor entrance to the building

HEAD COACH PATRICK NICHOLAS FOURTH SEASON AT UNCG (54-43 Record) 12th SEASON OVERALL (184-153 Record) ALMA MATER: George Mason, ‘86 Second Winningest Coach in Program History Patrick Nicholas begins his fourth season at the helm of the UNCG volleyball program in 2012 and his 12th as a Division I head coach. The Spartans finished 15-17 overall and 7-9 in Southern Conference play in 2011, Nicholas’ third campaign. Sophomore Kellie Orewiler was named SoCon Libero of the Year after leading the league in digs per set in conference matches (5.31 d/s). Nicholas improved on the success of his first year at UNCG by leading the team to a 22-12 record during his second season, including a 9-7 mark in Southern Conference matches. The 2010 squad started the year 7-0 and also put together a six-match winning streak midway through the season en route to advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. Orewiler was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team as a libero and senior Kayren Finney earned SoCon All-Tournament Team honors. During his first campaign in 2009, Nicholas led the Spartans to a 17-14 overall record and a 9-7 mark in Southern Conference action. Under his direction, Catherine Hanners earned Southern Conference Libero of the Year honors, as well as being named to the All-SoCon second-team. Nicholas is currently the sixth head coach in the program’s last 30 years. It is his third tenure as a women’s head coach, having produced stints at Lehigh and Troy. In 11 seasons as a head coach of women’s intercollegiate volleyball, he has a career record 184-153. Nicholas arrived at UNCG after serving two seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall University. While at Marshall, Nicholas helped lead the Thundering Herd to a 35-23 overall record in those two seasons, including a 22-8 mark in 2007. Marshall won the Conference USA regular-season championship with a 15-1 league record that season. He also helped mold three student-athletes into American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans. Nicholas has had two previous stints as a women’s head coach on the collegiate level at Troy University and Lehigh University. He received his first women’s head coaching job at Lehigh, where he coached from 1997-2003. He led the Mountain Hawks to a 121-92 record in his seven seasons and was the first coach in school history to lead the program to seven consecutive winning seasons. While at Lehigh, he won the Patriot League tournament championship in 1997. He also had a total of 16 student-athletes named All-Patriot League. After leaving Lehigh as the school’s all-time leader in wins, Nicholas went on to coach at Troy for the 2004 season. Nicholas left the program after that season to open his own volleyball training center. He owned and operated the High Performance Training Volleyball School in Austin, Texas. He also served as the men’s head coach for Navy’s program from 1986-90 while serving as an officer and instructor at the Naval Academy. Nicholas was named the EIVA Coach of the Year on the men’s side in 1989. When he took over as head coach prior to the 1986 season, he led the squad to its first-ever top-20 finish, and his teams continued to finish in the top 20 throughout his tenure there. As well as being a head coach, Nicholas has served as an assistant coach for many nationally recognized programs. He coached at Ohio State (1995-97), Purdue (1994-95), Navy (1992-94) and George Mason (1984-85). While at George Mason, Nicholas helped coach the team to back-to-back final four appearances where they won the third-place match both seasons. At Ohio State, he helped the Buckeyes to back-to-back Round of 16 appearances in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. In addition to intercollegiate coaching, Nicholas has a wealth of experience coaching several national and club programs around the nation. In 1990, he was the head coach for the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival Team that earned a bronze medal. He later went on to be an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1993-94. After that, he coached the San Diego Spikers of the NVA women’s professional league and led them to the league championship. While also coaching at Lehigh, Nicholas was the head coach of the United States 14 and under National Team from 1997-2000. He served as the on-site director, coordinator and evaluator at the national tryouts for the USA girl’s junior, youth and 14 and under teams from 1997-2004. He was also an assistant coach for the USA Women’s National A-2 Team in 1999 and 2001. He was the head coach of Club Annapolis that won a gold medal at the 1990 U.S. Open Championships and a silver medal in 1997. Nicholas earned his bachelor’s degree in 1986 in parks, recreation and leisure studies from George Mason, where he was a member of the men’s volleyball team in 1983, where they reached a top-10 ranking for the first time in school history. Nicholas helped George Mason’s men’s program earn its first-ever top-10 national ranking and first-ever trip to the finals of the conference tournament in school history. Upon his graduation, Nicholas played for the Washington Volleyball Club and won a bronze medal at the U.S. Open Championships in 1987. He and his wife, Megan, reside in Greensboro.

ASSISTANT COACH ABBI BLACKBURN SECOND SEASON AT UNCG FOUR SEASONS AS A COLLEGIATE ASSISTANT COACH ALMA MATER: Alabama, ‘07

Former University of Alabama standout Abbi Blackburn enters her second season as UNCG’s assistant volleyball coach in 2012. Before arriving in Greensboro, Blackburn spent three seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Tusculum College where she helped guide the program to unprecedented success. In her first season at Tusculum, she helped guide the Pioneers to a 22-11 record and their first-ever NCAA Division II regional ranking. Her team accomplished even higher feats in her second season as the team went 18-15 and earned the first-ever bid to the NCAA Championships in school history. That team also record the school’s first win over a top-25 program. Last season, Blackburn helped lead the Pioneers to an impressive 25-7 overall record as her team reached the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season. Tusculum also earned runner-up honors at the conference tournament. She also helped the team rack up an impressive amount of individual awards. The Pioneers had one first-team All-American and three all-region selections, including the Freshman of the Year in the region. Her team also had four all-conference members, two all-freshman team selections in the conference, one of which being the conference Freshman of the Year. Prior to joining the staff at Tusculum, Blackburn was a standout at the University of Alabama. As a junior, she helped the Crimson Tide reach their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid and also advanced to the SEC Championship Match for the first time in school history. Her team also advanced to the NCAA Tournament as a senior. In addition to her efforts on the court, Blackburn was also a leader in the classroom as she was named to the SEC All-Academic Team on three separate occasions. During her prep career, Blackburn played for one of the most prestigious club teams in the nation in ASICS Munciana Volleyball Club. Her 15-under and 17-under teams won the National Championship, while her 16-under squad earned third-place honors. Blackburn graduated from Alabama in 2007 with a degree in communication.

athletic training Erica Thornton

Head Athletic Trainer Erica Thornton is in her fourth year as the head athletic trainer at UNCG and her 11th year overall as part of the UNCG athletic training department. She is also an adjunct instructor in the department of Kinesiology. Thornton works with the UNCG women’s soccer. Thornton oversees the entire athletic training department, including supervision of staff, budget oversight and is overseer of the student-athlete welfare policy development. She has worked to develop the UNCG Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) Concussion Management Policy, the ICA Sickle Cell Trait policy and the ICA Lightning Policy. Thornton was promoted to head athletic trainer in March of 2009 after spending six years as the associate head athletic trainer (2003-2009) and one year as the assistant athletic trainer. She worked with the UNCG women’s basketball team (2002-06) and has been with the women’s soccer program since 2006. Prior to UNCG, Thornton spent two-plus years as an assistant athletic trainer at Appalachian State, where she worked with the women’s basketball team. Thornton spent two years as the University of Florida as a graduate assistant where she obtained her master of science in exercise and sports sciences in 1999. While at Florida, she worked with the women’s swimming and diving team while assisting with women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and track and field. Thornton earned her bachelor of science degree from SUNY Brockport in 1996 with an athletic training concentration. She has been NATA Board Certified since June of 1996. She has comprehensive Pilates certification from the PhysicalMind Institute and FMS Level I certification. She is also a member of the

strength and conditioning Danny Wheel

Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Danny Wheel is entering his second year as head strength and conditioning coach at UNCG in the 2012-13 season. Wheel brings more than a decade of experience to his new position. Prior to his arrival in Greensboro, Wheel spent 10 years as a member of East Carolina University’s Strength and Conditioning department. He spent six years as the coordinator of Olympic sports at ECU. He worked directly with the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball, volleyball and women’s soccer programs while also assisting with football. During Wheel’s first four years at East Carolina, he was the assistant director of strength and conditioning. He also assisted in organization and design of the new weight room in the Murphy Center. Wheel graduated from Virginia Tech in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and received his master’s degree in health education from Virginia Tech in 2001. While receiving his graduate degree, Wheel served as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant under the direction Mike Gentry. He played football for Frank Beamer’s Hokies from 1993-1998, finishing his career as a three-year letterman and a twoyear starter. Wheel was also a member of the corps of cadets for four years. Wheel is a certified member of the Collegiate Strength Coaches Association. He is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Wheel closes out his certifications by being an Olympic Club Coach certified. Wheel also competes in strongman and power lifting events.

2012 UNCG V o l l e y b a l l The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 92nd season of intercollegiate competition in 2012-13, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.

Dr. Linda Brady - Chanellor Dr. Linda P. Brady became the 10th chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on August 1, 2008. Previously she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. At UNCG Dr. Brady has led efforts to establish a mixed-use village designed to recapture theresidential character of the university, launched an Board of Trustees academic restructuring and program review process designed to guide future directions and investment, and positioned inDr. Kate R. Barrett tercollegiate athletics as an important element of the student Charles Blackmon experience. Weissburg list of American universities that have Chelsea Boccardo closed the gap between graduation rates (SGA President) for black and white students. Dr. Brady is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Partnership, a founding member of Opportunity Greensboro (a collegiate-business partnership), a member of the Greensboro Rotary, and a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She chairs the 2011 Campaign for the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She is a native New Yorker and the first member of her family to attend college. She earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, a master’s degree in political science from Rutgers University, and her doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University. From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Brady was an analyst with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense, a period covering both the Carter and Reagan administrations. She served as defense adviser to the Negotiations on Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria and held the same position during the Negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Brady also supported the negotiation and implementation of prepositioning and logistical support agreements with members of NATO and with countries in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. She received the U.S. Department of State Superior Honor award for her work in support of the theater nuclear forces program. Dr. Brady was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at the United States Military Academy in 1991-92. She has served on the board of the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Brady is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Army. She served as Senior Fellow for Arms Control at the Carter Center of Emory University from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Brady is married to Gustav “Steve” Heyer, a retired Army officer. Kim Record - Director of Athletics Kim Record is in her fourth year as the Director of Athletics at UNCG. Record was named to the post Sept. 27, 2009 and leads a program that fields men’s and women’s teams in 17 sports, over 250 student-athletes and 70 employees. Since arriving, Record has reshaped and revamped the athletic department across the board. UNCG has seen improvements on the field and has stimulated interest within the campus and Greensboro communities. During her first three years at UNCG, Record has implemented ‘The Spartan Way’ strategic plan in an effort to ensure the continued success and future improvement of Spartan Athletics. The plan includes five core values and six goals for the department summarized with the motto – ‘We discover and develop champions in life.’ Record has guided UNCG to success on and off the court during her time in Greensboro. In 2011-12 alone, the Spartans posted five regular season titles under her watch, including championship banners in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and a divisional title in men’s basketball. UNCG also had five Southern Conference Player of the Year award winners and five conference Coach of the Year honorees last season. The Spartans have excelled in the classroom, having 92 studentathletes named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12. Additionally, UNCG senior cross country student-athlete Ashley Schnell earned an NCAA winter sport postgraduate scholarship. Schnell and men’s soccer student-athlete Peyton Ford picked up SoCon postgraduate scholarship honors. Women’s basketball student-athlete Amy Clapper also earned the NCAA Women’s Enhancement post-graduate scholarship. Record guided UNCG through the NCAA Division I Certification process in 2011-12, which must be completed at least once every 10 years. The certified designated denotes that an institution operates its athletics program in compliance with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership. Record, who will serve on the NCAA Championships cabinet in 2012-13, is also the vice-chair of the Greensboro Sports Commission, an active member with the Greensboro Rotary and a member of the Greensboro Sports Council. Record, in conjunction with Chancellor Dr. Linda P. Brady, helped develop school spirit-building campaigns such as Move In, Sunday Funday, Go Blue Preview and Blue & Gold Fridays. Record is responsible for the leadership, administration, organization and finances of UNCG’s athletics program, which underwent a major shift in men’s basketball. The Spartan men’s basketball team began playing its games in the Greensboro Coliseum in 2009-10 and enjoyed success last season under SoCon Coach of the Year Wes Miller winning the North Division title. The Spartans will play in the Greensboro Coliseum for the fourth year in 2012-13, hosting 15 games in one of the premier facilities in the region. Record coordinates fundraising and operation of the Spartan Club with the vice chancellor for university advancement. She oversees efforts to engage alumni, fans and the community with UNCG athletics. The Spartan Club surpassed its annual scholarship fund goal of $300,000 for the 2012 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the scholarship fund. The Spartan Club posted an annual scholarship fund total of $307,479, a 20.7% increase over last year’s mark, increasing their efforts by over $50,000 and surpassing the previous high that was set in 1987. Record also has a lead role in strategic planning and in athletics facilities development. She helped complete the facility upgrades at the UNCG Baseball Stadium and the renovations of the HHP locker room facilities. The 12,000 square foot HHP facility hosts team lounges, shower facilities and general locker room areas for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country and track, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and softball. Record, who served as a consultant with ISP Sports before taking her current position, was the senior associate director of athletics at Florida State University from 1995 to 2008, and held a succession of positions at the University of Virginia from 1984-1995, culminating with an appointment as associate director of athletics for administration. Record emerged from a national search that drew 125 candidates, and is UNCG’s first female athletic director. She is only the second woman to hold an athletic director’s position in the 89-year history of the Southern Conference. In her 13 years at Florida State, she had a broad range of administrative duties, including serving as a member of the Executive Management Team, which determined and implemented policy decisions for a 19-sport, $50 million intercollegiate program. She directly supervised three sports programs – men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer – and monitored Title IX compliance. Other areas included executive-level staffing; day-to-day departmental operations; serving as liaison with the trademark licensing program; and oversight for marketing, media and public relations, and radio and television contracts. In construction, she facilitated FSU’s $6 million state-of-the-art soccer and softball stadium and its $10 million men’s and women’s basketball training center. She oversaw a project that showcased the history of athletics at FSU as part of a $100 million facilities improvement plan. Her initial responsibilities as associate director of athletics at FSU included oversight of men’s and women’s tennis, swimming & diving and softball. Record also held the designation of senior woman administrator. At Virginia, she supervised all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department and specialized in external operations. She implemented marketing and promotional strategies for all 26 sports programs as associate director of athletics for external operations. She was the executive staff member of a capital campaign team created to raise $50 million. She rose through the ranks at Virginia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, starting out as a sports information intern who was progressively promoted in the department to associate director of athletics for administration. As a consultant with ISP, Record provided marketing expertise in the area of athletics sports signage, including video boards, scorer’s tables and other digital signage. She has also coordinated purchase and installation between vendor, institution and ISP. Within the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Record has served on both the executive committee and the Director’s Cup Committee. Within the NCAA, she served on the Women’s Soccer Committee and the Regional Soccer Committee. A native of Charlottesville, she graduated from Virginia and earned an M.S. degree in sports management from Florida State. She has two sons – Kyle, 24 a graduate student at the University of Virginia, and Josh, 19, a freshman at the College of Charleston.

Team Inductions 1973 Women’s Golf Team

(Inducted 2004) Won the first national championship of any kind for UNCG, competing in the AIAW National Tournament in Massachusetts … defeated Rollins College on the final hole for the championship.

1982 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2004) Won the NCAA Division III National Championship without a home field … facilities at UNCG were under renovation at the time, forcing the team to play its games at near-by Grimsley High School … the team finished 19-3-0, including a 3-0 win over Wake Forest during the regular season and a 2-1 win over Plymouth State in double overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals.

1981-82 Women’s Basketball Team (Inducted 2007) National runnersup in the first-ever NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament … amassed a record of 25-3, losing in overtime at Elizabethtown College (Pa.) … began a run of seven consecutive 20-win seasons for the women’s basketball program.

1983 Men’s Soccer Team (Inducted 2009) Brought home the school’s second consecutive national title with a dominant season. Went 23-1-1 on the year, including outscoring its seven conference foes by a combined 44-1. Twelve of its first 13 matches were won by shutout. Won a then-NCAA record 23 matches, including rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the national title match to defeat Claremont.

Lynne Agee - Women’s Basketball Coach (Inducted 2004) The first active head coach to be enshrined … first coach in NCAA history to lead her team to the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions … more than 500 career wins to her credit.

Jim Allen - Administrator (Inducted 2003) Former vice chancellor for student affairs … had oversight on program’s move from Division III to I.

Maxine Allen - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2001) Garnered national attention as duckpin bowler … set world records and earned a top national ranking.

1983 Women’s Tennis Team (Inducted 2008) With four freshmen and two sophomores, team compiled a 20-4 record, including 14-2 in the spring, and finished the NCAA Division III national runners-up … Amy Brown and Lisa Zimmerman earned All-American honors that season.

1994 Baseball Team (Inducted 2010) The 1994 Spartan baseball squad became the first team in school history to record a victory in an NCAA tournament at the Division I level … In just its fourth year of existence, UNCG went 39-18 on the way to a Big South Conference title and 2-2 at the NCAA South Regional, defeating Southeast Louisiana and Tulane while falling twice to national power Southern California.

Mike Berticelli - Men’s Soccer Coach (Inducted 2000) Led UNCG to Division III national championships in 1982 and 1983 … guided UNCG to 70-9-5 record (86.3%) in four seasons.

Nelson Bobb - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) UNCG’s Director of Athletics for more than 25 years … Led the program through its transition from Division III to Division II to Division I and from the Big South Conference into the Southern Conference.

Ty Buckner - Administrator (Inducted 2010) Helped build the foundation of the Athletics Hall of Fame and served as the school’s first-ever full-time sports information director when the university was transitioning from Division III to Division I.

Mike Burke - Supporter (Inducted 2001) Led UNCG’s charge in scholarship fundraising … created first athletic endowment in 1987 … raised funds toward a total endowment now valued at more than $4 million.

Marge Burns - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2000) Holds record of 10 North Carolina State Amateur Golf titles … named Carolinas Outstanding Amateur five times … qualified and played in 14 USGA Amateur Championships, as well as six US Open Tournaments.

Joseph Caldeira - Men’s Golf (Inducted 2009) A second-team All-American selection in 1979 ... was the first male student-athlete to earn All-American honors in any sport ... finished 10th in the 1979 NCAA Division III Championship.

Mike Fleming - Supporter (Inducted 2000) UNCG supporter for more than two decades … UNCG named its basketball gymnasium the Michael Fleming Gymnasium on Dec. 1, 1994.

Dr. June Galloway - Administrator (Inducted February 2008) Served as the Coordinator of Women’s Athletics until her passing in 1974, helping to develop the first formal athletics program at UNCG.

Liz Gremillion - Volleyball (Inducted 2006) One of the best setters to ever play for the Spartans, recording over 4,000 assists in her career … named 1995 Big South Conference Player of the Year.

Belmar Gunderson - Amateur Athlete (Inducted 2000) Participated from 1952-56 at Women’s College … competed in four Wimbledons and 11 United States Lawn Tennis National Championships (now U.S. Open).

Larry Hargett - Men’s Basketball Coach (Inducted 2007) Coached UNCG to its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament berth, coming at the Division III level … finished the 1979-80 season 16-12 to earn its first NCAA bid.

Scott Hartzell - Men’s Basketball (Inducted 2006) Led UNCG to its first Division I NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bid, in which UNCG nearly upset Cincinnati … graduated as UNCG’s all-time leading scorer and set every UNCG 3-point shooting standard in his career … led the team in scoring in three of his four seasons.

Jason Haupt - Men’s Soccer (Inducted 2001) Two-time first-team AllAmerican … led UNCG to a Division III national championship in 1987 … UNCG’s all-time leader in goals scored with 77.

Winn Hazlegrove - Softball (Inducted 2005) Three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American honoree … one of UNCG’s greatest softball players, still ranked in the Top 10 in 20 statistical categories at the time of her induction (10 years after her graduation).

Pat Hielscher - Volleyball Coach (Inducted 2001) Coached UNCG’s first volleyball team in 1970 … guided Spartans to a 106-30 record and a NCAIAW state title in 1974.

Christine Hornak - Softball (Inducted 2009) Won 52 games over two seasons pitching for UNCG. Led the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1997 while earning Big South Pitcher of the Year honors.

Dock Kelly - Wrestling (Inducted 2006) One of UNCG’s first-ever qualifiers for the NCAA Championships (1996) … compiled a 50-34 mark despite competing with birth defects that left him without part of an arm and a leg. Honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with its Medal of Courage.

Dr. David B. Knight - Administrator (Inducted 2004) Not only a leader in the transition from Division III to Division I, but a leader on the national scene as UNCG’s Faculty Athletics Representative … became the only FAR to serve on the Div. I, II and III levels … served as chair of the NCAA’s first Division I Academics / Eligibility / Compliance Cabinet and served as a consultant to the NCAA on numerous academic reform issues.

Alex Lehnhoff - Men’s Tennis (Inducted 2010) The 1999 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year … as a junior, he won the Southern Conference’s No. 1 flight singles title … won a schoolrecord 27 matches in 1996-97, a mark that stood for 13 years … went 94-37 in singles play during his career and also won more than 60 doubles matches.

Ali Lord - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2007) UNCG’s record holder for single-season and career goals … tallied 20 or more goals in three seasons … had a single-season record 26 goals in 1996, earning All-American honors … Big South Player of the Year in 1996 and SoCon Player of the Year in 1998.

Raila Maisonlahti - Women’s Soccer (Inducted 2010) During her four seasons (1994-97), the Spartans compiled a 59-234 mark, including a perfect 22-0-0 record in Big South and Southern Conference play … the 1997 squad set school marks for wins (19), shutouts (13), overall points, goals and assists.

Carol Mann - Women’s Golf (Inducted 2002) LPGA Hall of Fame member … earned 38 LPGA victories in 22 years on tour.

The Spartan Club The Spartan Club is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to secure scholarship support for nearly 250 student-athletes who compete in 17 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletic programs at UNCG. UNCG proudly proclaims that 100 percent of Spartan Club contributions go directly to athletic scholarships for deserving student-athletes.

Methods of Giving

Cash, Checks and Credit Card Gifts

Provide the yearly financial resources needed to operate the athletic program. Payments may be spread over the course of a fiscal year (July 1-June 30), but all pledges must be paid by June 30. The university accepts cash, checks and credit cards (American Express, MasterCard, Visa).

Employer Matching Gifts

Athletic Scholarship Endowments

These provide tuition, room, meals, books and fees on an annual basis for a student-athlete. Pay tribute to someone’s life and accomplishments or leave your own legacy while strengthening UNCG’s athletic program.

These gifts include life income arrangements from trusts, annuities, income funds, as well as life insurance policies and individual estate bequests, such as cash or real estate.
