President’s Message By Daniel J. Weeks
This publication, a special production for our 25th anniversary, tells the story of our present: our graduates, award winners, courses, research projects, and degree programs. For many years now, we’ve been reporting on our successes in individual parts of Northern BC by distributing smaller, more localized content to those specific areas. We feel that the 25th anniversary is the perfect time to share stories of our activities and reach throughout the whole region. Greetings from UNBC. On behalf of everyone at UNBC, THANK YOU. For what, you ask? For UNBC. Exactly 25 years ago, the Government of BC created a northern university in response to the resolve and tenacity of more than 16,000 of you who paid $5 and signed on to become members of the Interior University Society. UNBC exists because of you. Your aspirations for the future are reflected in our work.
I hope you enjoy it because, again, we’re here because of you.
What a 25 years it has been. Nearly 12,000 students have graduated and we now annually produce more alumni for the North than all other BC universities combined. I recently travelled around Northern BC to participate in convocation ceremonies and remain in awe of our graduates, their families, and this spectacular region. Our grads are quickly emerging as leaders in their professions and community service, serving areas of need across the North. In fact, the single sector with the most alumni is health care. While anniversaries often serve as times to reflect on the past, I actually believe that UNBC’s 25th anniversary is more important as a platform for imagining our future. We are launching a planning process this fall that will strengthen UNBC for the next 25 years, and beyond. Take the opportunity to participate in our future, just as you did in our past.

Top high school graduates from around Northern BC have the chance to earn a UNBC degree tuition-free after receiving UNBC Scholars awards. UNBC Scholars can have their tuition waived for an entire bachelor’s degree program, provided they maintain a B average.
UNBC Year In Review UNBC placed second among universities of its size in the annual Maclean’s magazine rankings of Canadian Universities. The runner-up finish in the Primarily Undergraduate category matches UNBC’s best ever ranking. There were many other success stories over the past year. 1. Beginning with a kickoff event in September, UNBC has celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding with special events, guest speakers, and tree plantings across the region. The Community Celebration in June was built around the theme: The Founding and the Future. 2. The UNBC men’s basketball team qualified for the playoffs for the first time since joining the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. The Timberwolves finished second in the Explorer Division and lost in the quarter-finals to UBC. 3. Thousands of athletes, officials, and fans came together in the Agora Courtyard for the first outdoor closing ceremony at a Canada Winter Games. The Northern Sport Centre at UNBC also hosted five sports during the two weeks of competition. In addition, UNBC students raised more than $37,000 to make free public transit possible during the Games. 4. UNBC students and high school students from the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation joined together to build a traditional First Nations pit house through an Undergraduate Experiential & Service Learning Program course. A pit house is a winter dwelling traditionally used by many indigenous peoples around the world.

5. The UNBC student residences, campus daycare, and I.K. Barber Enhanced Forestry Laboratory are part of a new low-temperature, hot water district energy system at UNBC. Not only will it reduce the University’s use of non-renewable energy, it will also serve as a research, education, and demonstration facility for off-grid communities. 6. UNBC was officially recognized as A Fair Trade Campus in January. Fairtrade coffee, tea, and chocolate options are available at campus food service providers.

Prestigious Award Smithers Secondary School graduate Allison Inderbitzin received the 2014 Helen Thurwell Scholarship, one of the oldest and most prestigious endowed awards at UNBC. The renewable entrance scholarship is awarded each year to a female student from Northern BC who is active in the community and has proven academic excellence.

Passing the Torch: The Stroet Family When Queen Elizabeth II officially opened UNBC on Aug. 17, 1994, Allan Stroet was a young boy, more concerned with action figures than academics. Allan was unaware at the time that his parents Peter and Mary had been two of 16,000 people in Northern BC to donate at least $5 and sign a petition in the late 1980s calling for the creation of a university in the region. When Allan grew old enough to start thinking of university he considered schools in the Lower Mainland, but he says he’s glad he went to UNBC to earn his Bachelor of Commerce degree. “The proximity to my hometown, the newness of the school, it being still fairly young - I liked that everything was brand new,” he says. “I was much more comfortable in a new place.” He’s now an economic development officer with the Bulkley Valley Economic Development Association. Genetic Breakthrough UNBC researchers, including Dr. Elizabeth Dunn from Mackenzie (left), pictured along with Dr. Stephen Rader, and Dr. Martha Stark, made a major breakthrough by discovering a new way to study genetic splicing in premessenger ribonucleic acid. As a dentist, Paul Collard of Vanderhoof noticed the difficulty of getting health professionals to work in the North. When a colleague, medical doctor Alvin Mooney, told him about the drive to get a university built in Northern BC in the late 1980s, he saw it as a potential solution. “You need very good undergraduate education, and the best way to keep people in an area is to train them where they live,” he says. Paul was one of many to sign a petition calling for the establishment of UNBC. Paul’s daughter Tuppy Hoehn became a UNBC graduate in 2003, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in resource-based tourism. A former Olympic biathlete, Hoehn was able to train and coach while studying at UNBC. “I knew the training was great in Prince George, which was one reason I chose UNBC,” she says. “It’s even better now, so for student athletes the opportunities are really there.”

Producing Quality for the North The first day of medical school was also reunion day for Daniel Dittaro and Chet Mecham. Having lost touch after high school, the Vanderhoof natives were pleasantly surprised to see each other again and reconnect during four years of study in the Northern Medical Program. “There have been a number of Vanderhoof grads already and there are more in the program now. It’s great to see that we can produce quality physicians here in the North!” The Northern Medical Program also provided a supportive environment according to Daniel. “The NMP staff and faculty are wonderful. They helped us grow as people and develop our skills as doctors.” The Class of 2015 graduates, including Christopher Unger from Burns Lake, appreciated being near family and friends while attending the UNBC Prince George campus. “Medical school is extremely challenging and it was great to be able to attend a school that was closer to home where you have that support network,” explains Chet.

Passing the Torch: The Walsh Family For as long as he can remember, post-secondary education has played a major role in Peter Walsh’s life. Yet when he moved to Quesnel in 1980, he was surprised there was no university in the region. “I felt that there needed to be university-level education close to home,” says Peter, “That’s why when I heard about the drive to create UNBC in the late 1980s, I was completely in favour of it.” Stacey Hubbard of Quesnel Megan Parisotto of Quesnel

Peter joined 16,000 other Northern BC residents who signed a petition and donated $5 to the Interior University Society to encourage the provincial government to create a university for the North. His daughter Mary was a young child then, and already her post-secondary schooling was on his mind. “I remember when I was little my dad saying maybe by the time you’re older there will be a university in the North,” she says. “And sure enough there was.” Today, Peter and Mary are both UNBC alumni. He enrolled in the Master of Education program, becoming part of the first cohort to graduate with that degree in 1999, one year after Mary earned a degree in environmental science. Peter is now retired and Mary works in the geographic information systems field in Williams Lake. She wanted to stay in Northern BC, and says UNBC helped her along that path. “I’m really thankful and proud that he had a vision and he expressed his dream about it at the time,” says Mary. “UNBC became a big part of my life and I hope it will be the same for my children someday.”

Stephen Bennett of Quesnel not only won the Governor General Gold Medal for UNBC’s Class of 2015, he was also the Valedictorian at the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences Convocation in May. Bennett completed his second degree at UNBC, graduating with a Master of Education in Counselling. He also holds a Bachelor of Science Honours in Psychology. The proximity to home, the ability to do applied research early in his undergraduate studies, and the availability of student awards all attracted Bennett to UNBC.

“The research I’ve participated in has helped me to become better prepared to attend medical school next year and deliver health care in a northern context,” says Bennett. During his Master’s, he worked on a community-based thesis looking at families who were raising children with suspected, but not yet diagnosed, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Bennett’s research looked at the daily challenges parents face in raising children and the applicability of a psycho-educational group for parents. Bennett plans to continue his education next year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay.

When Lori Nyce crossed the stage at the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute (WWNI) in Gitwinksihlkw this spring with a Master of Arts in First Nations Studies, she became the first student to earn a graduate degree at the UNBC affiliate campus in the Nass Valley. Nyce is from Skidegate, Haida Gwaii and was born and raised in Prince Rupert, where she graduated high school. She began her post-secondary education studying nursing at Camosun College before moving to Gitwinksihlkw to work at WWNI, the Nisga’a post-secondary institute.

“I encouraged everyone to go to school at WWNI and I decided to take my own advice,” she says. Nyce completed a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies in 2007 and started studying for her Master’s degree two years later. She graduated with distinction and her thesis looks at the history of Nisga’a education, from traditional practices to the creation of the WWNI and its ongoing impact. All the while the mother of three continued to work full-time at WWNI, helping students on their educational journeys. She hopes her story can inspire others to reach their full academic potential. “By seeing that one person can do it, they can say ‘I can do that,’” she says. “I want it to rub off; I want people to use their skills and utilize our institution.”

This year, high school students in the Northeast heard from post-secondary students studying health-care disciplines ranging from medicine to midwifery to medical radiography technology from a variety of institutions. The high school students also participated in interactive exhibits, such as how to read an X-ray or take blood pressure. In addition to spreading the message about a career in health care, the post-secondary students on the trip also had a chance to experience the professional, personal, and recreational opportunities in the communities they visited. “The health-care students have the opportunity to really envision a life here,” says Northern Medical Program Senior Lab Instructor Dr. Sean Maurice. “They can see what it’s like to live, work, play, and raise a family.” This is the second time the roadshow has visited the Peace River-Liard. In 2012 it stopped in Fort Nelson and Chetwynd. This year it visited Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, and Taylor. Local Doctors Many in northeast BC were celebrating when the Northern Medical Program (NMP) held its eighth graduation ceremony this May. Of 30 graduates, five were from the Peace region. The Class of 2015 included 14 students from Northern BC. Representing the northeast were Taya O’Neill-Haugland (Fort St. John); and Omesh Syal, Jayden McIntyre, Elizabeth Weninger and Sheldon Clark, all from Dawson Creek. Most graduates will now start two to seven years of medical residency and fellowship training, depending on their chosen specialty.

Heading into a two-year family medicine residency in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Weninger feels well-prepared for this next stage of her education. “We have had some of the best teachers and doctors to help us in developing clinical skills. We also had the unique experience of being far removed from an urban centre like Vancouver, which gives us very different perspectives on health,” she says. “I believe that we were offered a really unique view point on the issues facing our northern populations. “This is a real advantage to those of us considering rural medicine, as we go in with our eyes open and we understand a bit better some of the challenges that we will encounter in the future.”

Clark, who is pursuing research ahead of future residency, agrees. “Through the Northern Medical Program, we were exposed to opportunities we almost certainly would not have had elsewhere. The community, both medical and general, in Prince George and the North is very supportive of its learners,” he says. “It’s a strong program that creates wellrounded graduates.” UNBC Scholar

Each year thousands of hikers trek through the Ancient Forest to admire the rare ecosystem that features Western Red Cedars estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, yet far removed from the maritime environment. The inland rain forest in the Upper Fraser River Valley is popular with both local residents and tourists, but it also serves as an important living research laboratory for UNBC students and faculty members. “The Ancient Forest provides UNBC researchers a unique opportunity to study an inland rainforest just 100 km from the Prince George campus,” says UNBC Ecosystem Science and Management Professor Dr. Darwyn Coxson. “Faculty members and students across disciplines ranging from biology to forestry to environmental studies have studied the unique attributes of the microclimate which has resulted in a better understanding of how to conserve and manage the ecosystem.” Dr. Coxson’s own research recommends the Ancient Forest be named a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site.

Honoring a Trailblazing Chief Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William received an honorary degree and gave a commencement address to the Class of 2015 at UNBC’s Prince George Convocation in May. Chief William was at the centre of the historic Aboriginal land title case decided by the Supreme Court in 2014 and has been a long-time advocate for the preservation of the traditional Tsilhqot’in way of life. William filed the case with the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1990, the same year as the establishment of UNBC. On June 26, 2014, a unanimous Supreme Court of Canada decision recognized for the first time that an Aboriginal group in Canada had proven title over a tract of land.
Studying the Spill A team of five UNBC researchers and their collaborators will continue to monitor the initial and potential long-term effects of the Mount Polley Mine tailings pond breach, which occured in August, 2014. The group published its initial findings in the prestigious journal Geophysical Research Letters in May. In that paper they identified the physical and chemical characteristics, location, and extent of a sediment plume within Quesnel Lake. “The advantage of having a strong group of scientists who were already collaborating on other projects in Quesnel Lake, was that we were able to respond quickly to implement sampling,” says lead author and UNBC Geography Professor Dr. Ellen Petticrew. The researchers reported the existence of a sediment plume more than 30 metres below the surface of the West Arm of the lake. They also determined copper concentrations in sediment samples collected from Quesnel Lake and Quesnel River are elevated, often above sediment quality guidelines for freshwater ecosystems.

“Rural Communities are where I Belong,” Says Local MD Northern Medical Program graduate Dr. Jean Oosthuizen of Williams Lake is ready for the next chapter of his education journey: surgical residency. “Aside from steadily increasing responsibility, one of the biggest differences between residency and medical school is teaching,” says Jean. “While I have a lifetime of learning ahead of me, I feel I have a lot to contribute to up-andcoming medical students. As residents, we take on a lot of direct teaching to junior medical students, something I look forward to.” When he finishes his five-year placement in Vancouver, Jean hopes to pursue rural practice. “Rural communities are where I belong, and are very much a part of who I am,” explains Jean. “While it would be premature to speculate where, there really is no other place for me. I think once you see what rural BC has to offer, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to be.”

A Living Legacy UNBC’s Northwest Campus in Terrace is home to a new Western Red Cedar thanks to a 25th Anniversary project led by the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute. The new cedar joins another of its species on the campus. In 50-75 years, one of those trees will be cut down and made into a totem pole to mark a future UNBC anniversary.
