Registration Guidelines Welcome to The Old Barn Community Centre Winter 2014 Program Guide. We are committed to supporting a healthy, diverse, and sustainable community. In this guide you will find programs for all ages which cover a wide variety of topics, including arts, language, education, fitness and much more. There will be plenty of events and activities for you and your family to enjoy. Do not forget to take advantage of our ‘Try it! Week’ promotion where selected classes are available to try for free during the week of January 13 – 19; see page 6. Many of our programs are also available for drop-in, as indicated by the drop-in symbol located throughout the guide. Follow our website and facebook pages for the most current information. Come and join us at The Old Barn Community Centre this Winter!

These programs encourage the development of Physical Literacy. Many classes are available for drop-in. Please arrive fifteen minutes prior to the start of the class in order to pay the drop-in fee (prices are listed online and in this guide). A comprehensive drop-in timetable can be found on page 7. The Old Barn Policies Neighbourhood Living Room Schedule
When indicated, the living room will be available only to specific user groups during that time slot. The Old Barn Community Centre staff reserves the right to alter schedules at its discretion. See page 26 for details.
Registration
Registration will remain open until the program is full unless otherwise agreed upon by The Old Barn Program Coordinator and the Instructor.
Participation
Only registered participants are able to join the session – drop-ins must pay before the start of each class.
Drop-ins
All participants must pay the drop-in/registration fee and provide the drop-in receipt to the instructor.
Make-up Classes
Waivers
Each participant must sign a waiver before participating in the class.
Instructors
Every effort will be made to run classes with the advertised instructor, however The Old Barn reserves the right to change the instructor when necessary.
Refunds
Old Barn Programs Pro-rated refunds will be given until 1 hour after the end of the second class by The Old Barn Front Desk staff (there is $5 nonrefundable administration fee). Following the second class, refunds may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Community Centre Manager. Old Barn Language Programs Registered participants who choose to withdraw from one of these classes by February 11 will be given a $10 refund.
Any cancelled classes will first be re-scheduled for the end of the session in the same time slot. If that time is not available, then the class will be re-scheduled by The Old Barn Program Coordinator.
School of Kinesiology Programs For refunds please contact the School of Kinesiology at The Osborne Centre.
Pro-rating
Exercise Room Refunds will only be offered for medical conditions (a doctor’s note must be provided). Other extenuating circumstances will be considered by the Community Centre Manager.
Programs will be pro-rated after the second week of classes until the end of the classes session, unless the program does not allow registration after the start date. The Old Barn Language Programs will not be pro-rated.
GST
GST (5%) will be added to the price of programs (for participants who are 15 years and older at the time of registration).
Wait Lists
When a program fills up and there is a possibility of new spaces opening up later in the session, interested participants will be entered on a wait list. If room becomes available, those on the waitlist will be contacted in order, to let them know of their opportunity to register.
Program Cancellations
Programs may be cancelled if a minimum number of registrants is not met one week prior to the start date. Register early to ensure a program proceeds. A full refund will be provided for any cancelled programs.
Photos
Photos may be taken of program and UNA event participants for use by The Old Barn and UNA for marketing and promotions. Photos may appear in the recreation guide, within The Old Barn, or on The Old Barn or UNA websites or social media. Should you have concerns with your photo (or your child’s photo) being taken, please inform the Program Coordinator.
Event Bookings and Birthdays Please refer to the contract supplied by the Events Coordinator upon your booking.
Available Equipment Sports equipment is available from The Old Barn Front Desk in exchange for a piece of ID. Available equipment includes: • Soccer balls • Badminton sets • Board Games • Basketballs • Volleyballs • Table Tennis • Giant Chess Set • Mahjong Set

Come dance and sing to happy village folk songs, Korean lullabies, Cuban rain forest songs and much much more. You’ll also find bells, triangles, train whistles, shakers, rhythm sticks, kitchen instruments, scarves, giant sheets to hide under and instruments galore! All this with a developmentally appropriate, research based curriculum taught by a registered Music Together instructor. Fees include 2 CD’s, a songbook and a Parent Education guide. Siblings 6 months and under can attend for free. Siblings 7 months and up pay a reduced sibling fee of $95. $55 Music Together Licensing Fee non refundable after the first class. Parent/Caregiver participation is required.
Children will learn the basic techniques of ballet, as well as how to create their own dances through improvisation and movement games. Wearing ballet attire (including tights and slippers) is recommended.

Children & Youth ARTS Drawing & Painting 6 - 17 years : Dehai Wang Learn drawing and painting at The Old Barn Community Centre with one on one instruction from one of our most popular teachers. Dehai’s hands-on instruction is popular with students as he shows them how to make bold brush strokes, apply colour, and understand form, value, and edge control. Students will explore a variety of subject matter in this class including still life and landscape. Students can work at their own pace regardless of their level of experience.

The BodyWorks Fitness Centre offers individualized and group personal training sessions. Kitsilano Neighbourhood House in partnership with SMART Fund and the City of Vancouver offers you the Westside Seniors Links Program. This program provides seniors the opportunity to hire a post-secondary student to help with tasks such as: light housework, gardening, shopping, pet care and more. The Old Barn Community Centre Fitness Room welcomes anyone 13 years and older, whether it’s your first time or you are a high level athlete. We offer a variety of memberships from weekly passes, monthly passes, 10x punch cards and one year memberships. Special rates are available for UNA residents and UBC faculty, staff and students. Identification is required to qualify for special rates and to provide proof of age. We have a variety of cardio machines and free weights that are accessible within the gym. If you need to bring a personal trainer there are no additional charges beyond a dropin fee. If you’re unsure how to use equipment in the gym we offer introduction programs for youth and adults.

Restorative yoga classes progress slowly. Through a gentle sequence of movements, breathing practices and body awareness the class prepares for longer supported postures allowing for relaxation in a comfortable and peaceful ambiance. This class is for all levels and interests, and is a good complement to other yoga practices. Suitable for chronic pain, circulatory blockages, digestive and respiratory problems or low-energy experiences. The postures are also adaptable for women during pregnancy.

Instructor Profile Andrew Fraser Andrew has been blessed to study at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute and the Mysore Mandala in Mysore, India. He began teaching in Seoul, South Korea in 2007 after completing several years of teacher training, zen meditation retreats and various workshops/courses with Anusara, Vinyasa and Raja Yoga masters. His classes reflect his in-depth knowledge of western and eastern approaches to yoga philosophy, anatomy, physiology, and spirituality.
The new softball diamond in Nobel Park is open to view with bookings available now. It is located at the south end of Wesbrook Mall next to the new playground and community garden plots. This high quality grass playing field is available to book for sport groups or community events. The diamond is fully enclosed with a fence. UNA residents receive discounted rates on select UBC Athletics and Recreation programs and rentals. These discounted rates can be claimed by displaying your valid UNA Community Services Card (CSC) to the facility staff upon registration or rental. Only one discounted rate is available per card - each person must present their own valid CSC card to claim the rate. Example: Mr. & Mrs. Smith want to take their two kids to the Aquatic Centre to go swimming. In order to qualify for the UNA Family Rate for each person, they must present four CSC cards to the attendant - one for each family member.

Birthday Parties at The Old Barn! Team up with our fun and energetic leader for an action packed party! They will assist you with set-up, clean-up, activities and decorating ideas. All Parties include: • A party leader for 2 hours (Saturdays 1-3pm only) that will lead the activities and assist you with the party preparation. • A room at The Old Barn decorated with balloons and banners. • Access to kitchen area (Please be advised that the kitchen only includes a refrigerator and microwave, no oven or stove.)
