Middle East and North Africa Report on AIDS | 2011
Quality data on the number and characteristics of the deported individuals based on their HIV status are not available from the Gulf Cooperation Council (or not systematically shared with United Nations agencies). Anecdotal information from Asian and other Middle Eastern countries that are sending migrant workers to Gulf Cooperation Council countries shows a significant increase in HIV prevalence among returning migrant workers. While this data needs to be supported by stronger evidence, yet, it is quite alarming53.
