The University of North Alabama’s Fraternity and Sorority Life is dedicated to enhancing the undergraduate fraternity and sorority experience by fostering an inclusive community, providing academic, personal, social, service, and leadership opportunities, and promoting a strong values-based fraternity and sorority community.

HOW TO JOIN COLLEGE PANHELLENIC COUNCIL CPH has primary recruitment before fall classes begin. Interested women may register online at una.edu/CPH. This year, UNA Panhellenic primary recruitment will be at the Marriott Conference Center from August 12 to 15. CPH primary recruitment ends with Bid Day on August 16. There may be opportunities to join outside of primary recruitment, through a process known as continuous open bidding (COB); however, there is no guarantee that a chapter will have COB spots available.

INDEPENDENT GREEK COUNCIL IGC chapters conduct recruitment individually by chapter. Most IGC chapters have recruitment activities during the first few weeks of each semester. These events are often advertised on social media and through the UNA Events App. Students interested in joining should submit an interest form at una.edu/IGC.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL IFC promotes year-round recruitment; however, most of the IFC recruitment at UNA takes place in the summer and fall. IFC recruitment is informal, which means each chapter has its own events. Chapter recruitment events are often advertised on social media and through the UNA Events App. Students interested in joining should submit an interest form at una.edu/ifc.

NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL Many NPHC organizations at UNA do not allow undergraduates to join until the individual has completed at least one semester of classes. The chapters determine which semester they will conduct intake. NPHC chapters have their own intake processes that often begin with an informational meeting. Students interested in joining an NPHC chapter should attend NPHC Convocation, which will be Thursday, September 2, at 5 p.m. in the Banquet Halls of the Guillot University Center. The University of North Alabama Code of Student Conduct defines hazing as “an act that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or that destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization. Participation or cooperation by the person(s) being hazed does not excuse the violation. Failing to intervene to prevent, (and/or) failing to discourage, (and/or) failing to report those acts may also violate this policy.”

Fraternities and sororities are also expected to follow their inter/national headquarter guidelines, which include guidelines on risk management, membership recruitment/intake, new member education, and anti-hazing.
AL COHOL A ND OTHE R DRU GS
UNA’s Student Code of Conduct prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of alcohol and other drugs by students and student organizations. The regulations also prohibit other alcohol-related misconduct. Students under the age of 21 are prohibited from possession and/or consumption of alcohol. All students are prohibited from the use or possession of illegal drugs. Additionally, fraternities and sororities sponsoring events where alcohol is present are subject to the Fraternity and Sorority Life event guidelines, including hiring University police officers.

National Hazing Prevention Week: NHPW is an opportunity for communities across the nation to raise
awareness and advocate against hazing. During the last full week of September, when NHPW is observed, UNA has programs to educate our community on the implications of hazing and involve members in the active prevention of hazing. Required educational programs: Each semester, Fraternity and Sorority Life creates an educational program calendar with 3-4 events. Attendance requirements vary by event. Past topics have included inclusive language, safe alcohol use, hazing prevention, and diversity and inclusion. New member course: All students joining a fraternity or sorority are expected to complete a non-credit bearing online course. Students are automatically enrolled in the course after accepting membership in the organization. New members must pass the new member course with a 60 percent, or their chapter is fined $100. The course covers risk management, health and safety, diversity and inclusion, and more.

Membership in a fraternity or sorority is a life-long commitment; however, as students, chapters are flexible and understanding of competing commitments. Though there are mandatory commitments, such as weekly meetings, educational programs, and community service, time requirements will vary by organization and individual involvement.

No. NPHC chapters were founded by Black members to provide students of color a space when other fraternal organizations were not welcoming to diverse populations. Though NPHC organizations remain committed to initiatives that uplift and empower the Black community, membership in these organizations is open to students of all racial backgrounds.
WHAT I S T HE C OS T T O BE A ME MBE R?
Joining a fraternity or sorority is an investment in your future. Organizations vary by cost, with a range from $135 to $2,500 during the first semester and a range from $50 to $650 in following semesters. These fees go to services that will positively impact your experience, including social events, t-shirts, technology, etc.
WHAT A RE THE RE QU I RE ME NTS T O JOI N?
Each organization has different membership requirements. Every organization has a GPA minimum, and some organizations require students to have earned college credits before joining. Additionally, many organizations value community service and community involvement.
GLOSSARY ACTIVE MEMBER: a member who has been initiated into lifelong fraternity or sorority membership and participates in chapter activities at the collegiate level. ALUMNUS/ALUMNA: member of a fraternity/sorority who has graduated (plural is alumni/alumnae). BIG BROTHER/SISTER: an older member assigned to guide a new member or associate member through the new member education process. BID: a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority. CALL: a vocal sound used by members of NPHC fraternities and sororities to acknowledge one another. CROSSED: a term used by NPHC organizations and some IGC chapters to indicate that a new member has been fully initiated into the organization. The term means different things to different groups, but it generally means crossing over from being a new member to an active member. Most groups record this time to the second. CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING: the term for the time when Panhellenic sororities may take new members outside of the primary recruitment process. Panhellenic sororities are only able to COB if their chapter membership falls below Panhellenic total. INFORMATIONAL: a meeting conducted by a chapter for prospective members who are seeking more information about the organization and how to join. An informational is typically the first step in the membership intake process for NPHC organizations. INITIATION: a formal ceremony in which an individual becomes a full member of a fraternity or sorority. INTAKE: intake is the process by which NPHC organizations bring new members into their organization. This process usually begins with an informational meeting or formal rush and concludes with initiation. Each organization does membership intake on its own schedule and not necessarily every semester. Most organizations require that you have earned
college credit before beginning the process. LEGACY: someone who has a biological relationship to someone who is already a member of a fraternity or sorority. Each organization has different policies regarding legacies, and many have updated their policies to remove special membership considerations for legacies. Being a legacy does not guarantee membership in an organization. LINE: individuals in an NPHC organization who went through the membership intake process together, similar to a new member class. LINE BROTHER/SISTER: term for members of an NPHC organization who were initiated at the same time into the same organization. Lines are ordered, and there is terminology for a person’s position in the line. NEOPHYTE: a term used to refer to new members of an NPHC organization. Sometimes abbreviated as neo. NEW/ASSOCIATE MEMBER: a term used to refer to a member of a fraternity or sorority who has accepted a bid but has not participated in the initiation ceremony. This time is when they get to know the members of the chapter, learn history and symbolism, and develop an understanding for the ideas and principles of the organization. NEW MEMBER PRESENTATION: a formal presentation at which newly initiated members of an NPHC organization introduce themselves to the community and highlight what they have learned about the organization during their intake process. This is sometimes referred to as a neophyte presentation or a probate. PANHELLENIC TOTAL: The allowable Panehllenic chapter size, which is reset to largest chapter size after primary recruitment and seven days into the start of the spring semester. Each chapter may recruit new members through the COB process until they meet total. PARA: short for paraphernalia. The different
items of Greek clothing or items someone is wearing. Sometimes referred to as ‘nalia. PHILANTHROPY: a charitable fundraiser or project sponsored by a fraternity or sorority. Some organizations have a designated charity they continuously support. These charities are also referred to as a chapter’s “philanthropy.” PIN/BADGE: a small piece of jewelry a member wears that represents the ideals and values of the organization. POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER (PNM)/ ASPIRANT: a term used for a student who has shown interest in being recruited by a fraternity or sorority, or who has registered for a formal recruitment process. Aspirant is common among NPHC organizations. Formerly, the term rushee was used. PROPHYTE: an older member of an NPHC organization who has been in the organization long enough to initiate a new line of members. RECRUITMENT: the mutual selection process that PNMs and chapters go through during a set period to get to know one another. This process is conducted informally throughout the year and formally in the beginning of the fall semester. Formerly, the term rush was used. RECRUITMENT COUNSELOR: an upperclass member of a Panhellenic sorority, chosen and trained to assist PNMs with CPH primary recruitment. RITUAL: a ceremonial event unique to each organization that plays out the ideals and principles of that organization. They are the same for every chapter of the same fraternity or sorority and are usually the time when students take an oath to uphold the values of that organization. STEPPING: an historically Black Greek tradition characterized by synchronized hand foot movements, along with singing, dancing, chanting, and/or acting. STROLLING: a line dance done by members of NPHC organizations.
