The University of Minnesota Duluth enters the 2016 campaign with preseason national rankings by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (R.V.) and Perfect Game USA (no. 23), its highest position in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll since 2004 (fourth), and a nine-member senior class including 2016 NSIC Presason Player of the Year, senior first baseman Alex Wojciechowski and fellow National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-America selection, senior second baseman Jimmy Heck. After posting its secondhighest win total in program history and ending 2015 in the NSIC Tournament semifinals, UMD will look to take the next step as it steps on the field later this month to begin the season.

WHO’S BACK? The marquee name returning for the Bulldogs is the aforementioned Wojciechowski, who earned his second career Preseason Player of the Year selection (2014) as well as NCBWA Preseason All-America Second Team selection already this month. “Wojo” earned his second career All-NSIC First Team selection a season ago, leading UMD in nearly ever major category with a .417 batting average, .733 slugging percentage, and .498 on-base percentage as well as 78 hits, 60 runs scored, 57 runs batted in, 25 walks, 19 doubles, and 12 home runs while playing in all 51 games for UMD. The Bulldogs return two additional All-Central Region selections from a season ago, each honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) in Heck and junior outfielder Grant Farley. Heck earned First Team All-Region honors from three different organizations a season ago, including the NCBWA and Daktronics. His 70 hits and 18 doubles were second-most to only Wojciechowski while he also earned an All-NSIC Gold Glove while making just three errors on the year for a .986 fielding percentage. Farley slugged .706 on the year

with 30 of his 62 hits on the season going for extra bases. Also returning to the line-up are senior third baseman Kyle Comer, senior outfielder Kyle Singer, junior shortstop platoon Brian Pierce and Kyle Hoffman, junior catcher Marco Lucarelli, and and junior outfielder Matt Vogt. Comer led the group with a .380/.479/.570 batting line and seven home runs, finishing third on the Bulldogs with 68 hits while playing in all 51 games for the Bulldogs. Vogt slugged nine doubles on the season. Senior Spencer Diedrich returns as a twoway player both on the mound and in the line-up. He plated 14 runs in 30 games while also hurling 29.2 innings for UMD. The pitching staff will be led once again by senior southpaw Bo Hellquist. He tossed a no-hitter in his first appearance of the NSIC season a year ago on Apr. 3 against then-No. 2 Minnesota State University and shut out Wayne State (Neb.) College in the NSIC Tournament on May 6 in his most notable appearance, earning a spot on the NSIC All-Tournament Team. Hellquist will serve as one of UMD’s team captains along with Heck, Wojciechowski, and senior right-hander Matt Mattiacci. The reliever tossed an immaculate inning (three strikeouts on nine pitches) against the University of MInnesota Crookston on Apr. 15 last season. Mattiacci will anchor the Bulldog bullpen with senior right-hander Wes Mleziva, who finished with six saves and a 1.88 ERA last season. On the starting side, UMD returns its co-newcomers of the year, each tossing from the right side in senior Austin Vaske and sophomore Nick Dorfman. Vaske finished with a team-high five wins in nine starts last year and a 3.00 ERA in 54.0 innings. Dorfman went 4-0 in eight starts last season. Junior left-hander Kevin Stocke started the opener for UMD in 2015 and matched Vaske with a 5-2 record in 45.2 innings. Among the other returning hurlers, lefty Marcus Frederickson returns a 3.82 ERA

Bulldog Park and wade stadium

The UMD baseball team plays its home games at Bulldog Park, which is located adjacent to James S. Malosky Stadium on the eastern edge of campus. Constructed in 1988, Bulldog Park contains one of the top natural grass playing surfaces in the area and is also used by various local high school and youth baseball teams. UMD baseball's "home away from home," historic Wade Stadium, fitted in 2015 with a turf field to accomodate regular use by the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League, the Bulldogs neighbor, The College of St.

Scholastica (NCAA D-III), and local high school teams, will also serve as a back-up home base for UMD. After suffering through two entire seasons without a home game in Duluth due to inclement weather and field conditions, the Bulldogs still call Bulldog Park home, but will gladly use the newly renovated Stadium. Tucked in West Duluth and originally built in 1941, Wade Stadium was originally part of Franklin Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration - a federal jobs program implemented during the Great Depression.

Originally called All-Sports Stadium, the Wade's grandstand was installed using paving bricks from Grand Avenue by masons hired by the Federal Government. Since 1941 more than 1 million fans have attended games at Wade Stadium, although attendance figures were not kept until 1946. UMD won its first game ever at Wade Stadium, a 5-1 no-hitter by left-handed pitcher Bo Hellquist ('16) over the thenNo. 2 ranked Minnesota State University in NSIC action.

bob rients HEAD COACH, 11TH SEASON Bob Rients enters his 11th season as the University of Minnesota Duluth's head coach in 2014 and 16th year overall as a member of the UMD baseball staff. Rients (pronounced "rents") became just the third head coach in the program's storied history on Aug. 4, 2005, succeeding Scott Hanna, who stepped down three months earlier following a 27-season head coaching run. Through his first nine seasons of leadership, Rients has compiled a 190-239 overall record, including an 99-86 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. In 2009, his Bulldogs went 3620 overall (matching a program single-season mark in victories) and 22-10 in the NSIC, also a career-high in conference victories. The impressive season earned Rients the NSIC Coach of the Year award. A native of Elysian, Minn., Rients first arrived on the UMD campus in the fall of 1997 after transferring from the University of MinnesotaCrookston. He lettered two years (1998-99) with the Bulldogs as an outfielder before moving on to the coaching arena.

Until his promotion to head coach, Rients was responsible for coordinating UMD's recruiting efforts as well as overseeing the pitching staff and monitoring practice sessions starting with the 1999 season. During his coaching tenure, UMD has earned one NSIC regular season title (2003), earned the school's lone berth in the NCAA Division II Central Regionals (2003) and produced the school's first three baseball All-Americans: Tim Battaglia in 2003, Tim Garceau in 2005, and most recently, Alex Wojciechowski in 2013. The Bulldogs also have had nine ABCA All-NCAA II Central Region selections and 22 All-North Central Conference/All-NSIC honorees. In 2014, UMD freshman second baseman Skyler Wenninger was tabbed for the NSIC Gold Glove Team after making just three errors in 38 games. Rients, who celebrates his 40th birthday on February 2, 2016, earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from UMD in 2000.

60 HIT-BY-PITCH Call it lucky (or unlucky) if you will, but part of

the reason UMD reached base at a .408 clip as a team in 2015 was 60 hit-by-pitches, including 12 by Grant Farley.

50 STRIKEOUTS Center fielder John Meyer (’15) set a Bulldog record for strikeouts at the plate in his senior campaign while also socking a career-high nine home runs for UMD.

In addition to 11 different players in head coach Bob Rients’ tenure, the Bulldogs also had the Region’s 2003 Player of the Year in pitcher Tim Battaglia.

16 ALL-REGION SELECTIONS

16 NEWCOMERS Three transfers, 12 first-year players, and one redshirt freshman will each compete for playing time in the Spring season for UMD. 9 SENIORS UMD will be led by a nine-member senior class in 2016, including NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Alex Wojciechowski, allconference Gold Glover Jimmy Heck, lefty ace Bo Hellquist, and closer Wes Mleziva.

have been at or above .500 in 5-of-7 seasons under head coach Bob Rients.

duties in 2015, earning six saves - just two shy of the Bulldog program record of eight set by Brian LaShomb in 1991. UMD placed five players on rosters in the Northwoods League, one of the top collegiate amateur baseball leagues in the country, last summer. Bo Hellquist and Alex Wojciechowski spent the entire season with the Duluth Huskies; Kyle Comer played with the Thunder Bay Border Cats for the second-straight season and later joined the Huskies; Jimmy Heck and Spencer Diedrich each got their first taste of the league with Duluth.

4 BIG LEAGUE DRAFTEES Tim Battaglia (’04), Pat Bergquist (’87), John Engen (’79), and Mike Petrich (’90) were each selected in the Major League Baseball amateur player draft. Four others signed professional contracts, including three independent in the big leagues.

3 ERRORS In moving to the other side of the diamond last season, Jimmy Heck earned a spot on the NSIC Gold Glove team after making just three errors in 200-plus chances, good for a .986 fielding percentage.

Alex Wojciechowski became the third UMD AllAmerican selection in 2013 and again in 2015 with a Third Team Daktronics selection. He joined Tim Battaglia and Tim Garceau, each honored by Rawlings/ABCA, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

3 ALL-AMERICANS

8 ALL-NCC SELECTIONS UMD spent four years in the North Central

Conference (2005-08) and had eight all-league players, and at least one each season.
