3,2,1 (Cardio, Resistance and Core)

Dana Whyte Dana has been an active member at the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre since its opening in 1997. As an athlete all her life and still now into her 50’s, she is no stranger to physical activity and looks to the “Doupe” to fulfill her fitness needs. Dana is motivated to be “the best she can be” and participates in fitness classes at Joe Doupe because she loves the variety and quality of the instructors. Three years ago, Dana was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer requiring surgery and chemotherapy. Frustrated and angry that she wouldn’t be as strong and as fit as she once was, Dana’s athletic instinct pushed her to do whatever she could to stay active. Driven to get back to her pre-treatment level, Dana participated in a research program through St Boniface hospital and CancerCare, working with trainer Dave Kent to keep active. With help from Dave and her own determination, Dana was back to work and back to classes within 6 months. “Dana is an inspiration to me. Seeing her work so hard and go the extra mile day after day, motivates me to do my best at each workout. When I’m paired up with her, I give it my best, even if she kicks my butt every time!” – Kerri Chase, Joe Doupe Recreation Centre, Supervisor

6 | SPRING/SUMMER 2020 ACTIVITY GUIDE

This class has a little bit of everything. Three minutes cardio, 2 minutes resistance and 1 minute core.

Step’n Pump This athletic workout alternates between cardio on the step and resistance training using dumbbells and body weight. A great cardio workout that also builds power and strength.

Cardio, Core & More This combo workout may include the use of a stability ball, bosu, bender ball, gliders or dumbbells and promises to challenge your cardiovascular system and strengthen your core.

Double Step Using two steps parallel to each other, this interactive cardio workout will take you from one bench to the other, over the top, around the side and off the diagonal. The fun factor is doubled when you share your bench with your neighbor.

GROUP FITNESS CLASSES Hatha Yoga This class is slow-paced. We work on stretching the fascia (connective tissues of our muscles) as well as creating healthy stress for joints ligaments and tendons. The breath is linked in to assist our practice and create a quieter mind.

Yoga Flow Yoga flow classes string poses together to make a sequence. Each movement is synchronized to a breath. The breath is given primacy, acting as an anchor as you move from one pose to the next.

Yin Yoga Cardio Fusion Earthy rhythms & tribal moves elevate your heart rate and your mood. Then flow through movement inspired by yoga and pilates to complete this energetic workout.

Body Conditioning Combine alternating segments of upper and lower body strength exercises for an energizing, non-cardio type of workout, using step, weights, bands and mats.

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of modern yoga with postures, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time. Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body–the tendons, fascia, and ligaments– with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility.

Pilates Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.
