Billy Bridges Billy Bridges, a renowned 5-time Paralympic gold medalist and 4-time world champion in the sport of Sledge Hockey discovered Recreation Services through his wife, Sami Jo Small – a beloved Winnipegger and also an Olympic hockey champion. Like many community users, the introduction to Recreation Services at U of M came long before the Active Living Centre (ALC) was constructed – it all began with the Gritty Grotto – making the transition to the ALC that much more desirable. “The ALC spoils me that’s for sure. As a disabled athlete I have a lot of different requirements for my training. Where I live [for most of the year], I have to be a member at 3 different gyms/clubs to cover all of my training needs. The ALC literally has it all.” Aside from his training Billy also uses the gym and swimming facilities to shoot hoops and swim laps, and enjoys wheeling his way from St Vital to campus using the trails that run through the outdoor green spaces. Billy admits that his use of the ALC in 2017 played an important role in his silver medal performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, providing him with everything that he needed to prepare from Nordic ski ergs and hand bikes, to 3 different types of horizontal pull machines. For this reason, you can understand his appreciation for the facilities and all that they have to offer not only to students, faculty, and staff – but community members as well! “I absolutely recommend the ALC to everyone I know. I have definitely bragged about it to every athlete I’ve met in Winnipeg.”

Mikayla Lanoie You can catch Mikayla at the Active Living Centre instructing members on exercise technique and equipment usage, or simply providing information about programs and services that are being offered. Mikayla Lanoie is a recent graduate from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management here at the University and now works as a Fitness Attendant for Recreation Services. Not only is she an attendant, but also a member herself and has used the facility throughout the 5 years of her studies and continues to use it today. “It doesn't take a Kinesiology student to know that physical activity is amazing at reducing stress, improving sleep, and improving overall health. This leads to better mental performance during classes, and being able to cope better during stressful periods of our academic careers.” In addition to keeping her healthy both physically and mentally, the ALC has expanded Mikayla’s social circle by allowing her the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests and creating an active lifestyle, which helps her maintain positive health habits as she begins her career. Even though her schedule is always changing, the hours at the ALC allow her to adjust and make her way to the 300 & 400 levels of the gym to do resistance training in the weight areas – which is her main form of training. Although there is a lot to love, for Mikayla what stands out most about being a member with Recreation Services is the versatility that the facility offers to its members. Between free group fitness classes, racquetball courts, or the weight floor, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This level is for those individuals who are currently physically active and are looking for more challenge. Program includes a 1-month membership for non-members. Coming in 2019!

Sana Mahboob Sana Mahboob has worked at the University of Manitoba for over 10 years and currently resides in the office of External Relations. When she’s not in the office, she’ll head to the Active Living Centre on her lunch break or after work to get her dose of physical activity. What she likes most about being a member with Recreation Services is the community because to her, people make all the difference. “Whether it’s the Recreation Services staff, my fellow gym members, or the Physical Plant staff working in the area, there’s an incredible sense of community here. Being here helps by energizing you for the day ahead or it can help you wind-down after a long day. Simply put, it just makes your day better.” With all the time that Sana spends on campus, the Recreation Services facilities constantly make a positive impact in both her personal and professional life. It was here at the ALC that she trained for her first half-marathon, did her first burpee, and in the Joyce Fromson Pool took her first swimming lesson! Staff members have even invited her to take part in memorable experiences filled with joy and high heart rates due to intense cardio from events such as the November Project, which was an early-morning workout at the Investors Group Field with other locals of all ages, and an obstacle course which is the same test used for RCMP training. The Sport and Recreation facility Sana uses most often is the ALC, where she is inspired by the many people she meets in and around the facilities. One of her goals is to maintain a routine that keeps her physically and mentally healthy and she’s confident that Recreation Services will continue to keep her on that path.

28 | FALL 2018 ACTIVITY GUIDE

Ulla Liljegren From casual hours teaching fitness classes to the coordination of Group Fitness, Fitness Attendants, Employee Wellness, and Fitness Testing – Ulla Liljegren has worked for the Recreation Services for more than 30 years and has overseen the development of Fitness and Instructional Programs, Employee Wellness, and Occupational Testing. Dedicated to her career of helping others live healthier lives, working for the Recreation Services has brought her a happy work-life balance allowing her to do what she loves while making friends amongst colleagues, directors, members and participants. For Ulla, her experience working for the Recreation Services goes beyond just clocking in and clocking out. It has made deeper impacts in her life, allowing her to see things from different perspectives and having a direct effect on how she leads classes and interacts with her staff and colleagues. “I have learnt from very early on that being true to myself and standing up for what I believe in is important in every aspect of our lives. Recreation Services has given me this opportunity. I feel valued, supported and respected.” Ulla has seen things change from the dark, earth smelling underground Gritty Grotto to the long dreamt-of Active Living Centre as it is now. But despite the shift to what she describes as the luxuries of the ALC – a gym filled with natural light and equipment to meet every need – she is glad to have experienced “the myth” of the Grotto, all the while being happy to brag about the new and improved ALC. Ulla, now retired will always remember the first time she was asked to sub a fitness class with the Recreation Services because that was the start of the many unforgettable memories that followed. Now it’s back to those exact roots – teaching fitness classes and testing while also packing her bags and cycling as long as she can and as far as she can – the true embodiment active living.
