Monnalisa Thyme to Kill

ULTRA ENTERTAINING

You’ve spent months slimming down on salads and pushing through that extra mile to get swimsuit ready. Well, summer is here, and it’s time for a little weekend indulgence. In our opinion, it would seem downright unpatriotic not to celebrate one of the season’s most important holidays: National Ice Cream Month. We have just the treats to cap off a sultry Houston night or give that alfresco party extra panache.

Photos by Julie Soefer

Monnalisa’s Thyme to Kill Drink with Popsicle COCKTAIL COMPONENT: 2 oz. of Grey Goose vodka 4 raspberries 2 sprigs of thyme Mix ingredients in shaker, pour into a glass and top with tonic before adding popsicle.

If you find yourself downtown for an Astros game, festival or concert, Reserve 101 is the perfect pit stop to cool off with something creative. The acclaimed whiskey bar and cocktail lounge, just steps from Toyota Center, Discovery Green and House of Blues, has given the classic push pop a very sophisticated, 21 and over twist. Flavors range from the ScotchColada with fresh-chunked pineapple, Monkey Shoulder Scotch and coconut milk to the Chocolate Chip Mint Julep with chocolate milk, mint leaves and Woodford Reserve Bourbon. After a morning shopping at Town & Country Village, an afternoon on the trails at Terry Hershey Park or a day kayaking along Buffalo Bayou, pop in to west side hotspot Hotel Sorella

POPSICLE COMPONENT (8 servings): 2 ½ cups of chopped fresh blueberries ¾ cup of white sugar 4 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1 pinch of salt Mix all the ingredients together with 8 oz. of hot water. Pour into popsicles molds, insert sticks and fill ¼ inch from the top with water before freezing.

CITYCENTRE and poolside Monnalisa bar for their newly introduced pop-tails, a tantalizing pairing of homemade popsicle and craft cocktail. Selections span from the tropical Valencia Squeeze and exotic Brazilian Raspberry Caip to the south of the border Spice the Life. If anyone knows how to throw a party in Houston, it’s famed restaurateur Tony Vallone. Customers who clamor to landmark Tony’s in Greenway Plaza, Ciao Bello in Tanglewood and Vallone’s in Memorial swear by his Bailey’s-infused Espresso Carmel Milkshake as the coolest way to cap off a sizzling summer event. For some extra decadence, add a doughnut floater. UltraMagTexas.com

TALK TO TAMMY

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER... It’s officially summertime in Houston and Mustang and I want to talk about a few things you can do to protect your dog in the summer:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Never, ever leave your dog in the car. Even when you “think” it’s OK. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside. Take your walks during cooler times of the day. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt), because it can burn your dog’s paws. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for your pet – make sure your pet has a means for cooling off.

7.

Keep your dog free of external parasites like fleas, ticks and heartworms. Consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet. There are several kinds available. Mustang takes the once-a-month type that covers fleas and heartworms. It’s very convenient.

8.

Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your vet first to see if it’s appropriate for your particular pooch). You know, a “summer hair cut”.

9. 10. 11. 12.

Apply sunscreen to your dog’s skin if they have a thin pad.

13.

Remember, dogs release heat through their mouth/tongue. Install a doggy door in your house so that your pet can escape the heat. Take them to the beach. Take them to the lake.

Diets high in antioxidants can also be beneficial for your pet’s treatment plan.

Like people, dogs are susceptible to the negative effects of aging on the mind and body. Canine cognitive dysfunction or “doggie dementia” is a disorder similar to dementia in people.

Mankin recommends implementing increased activity among your dog to help slow the degenerative process.

“Signs for canine cognitive dysfunction include problems with learning, housetraining, awareness of surroundings, and problems with the wake/sleep cycle,” said Dr. Joseph Mankin, clinical ULTRA PETS assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “Dogs may also appear confused, have increased episodes of restlessness, and may have less interest in playing or appear irritable.” Mankin says that cognitive dysfunction cases increase with age. About a third of dogs show one or more signs at the age of 11 and most dogs show signs of the dysfunction at the age of 16. At this time, there is no breed predisposition. The only common indicating factor for dogs is the age.

“Environmental enrichment in the form of playing with toys, interacting with other dogs, and learning new tricks can be effective in lessening the signs of cognitive dysfunction,” added Mankin. There are also no proven preventative measures that an owner can take. The best recommendations are to keep your dog healthy by giving it a balanced diet and continuing its exercise. Canine cognitive dysfunction is a function of the brain aging, and unfortunately most of the time it is inevitable.

CANINE COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION

If you feel your dog is showing signs of mind degeneration, visit with your veterinarian to learn more about possible diagnosis and treatment plans. “The syndrome is diagnosed based on the patient’s clinical signs and activity/behavioral changes at home,” said Mankin. “There is not a specific test to diagnose the problem, although changes on advanced imaging of the brain can give some indication.” “Treatment of cognitive dysfunction includes certain medications, environmental changes, and changes in diet,” explained Mankin. “With this syndrome, there may be an association with the lack of dopamine and there are medications that can increase dopamine activity that can help with a patient’s clinical signs.”

It is important to remember that not all dogs will display all the signs of this dysfunction. That is why it is important to take your dog to your veterinarian if it displays any behavioral changes. Your veterinarian can look for common disorders that might explain what is going on with your pet.

“If your pet is starting to become confused, having accidents in the house, or displaying any behavioral changes, an appointment with your regular veterinarian would be indicated,” said Mankin. “There are several other disease processes that can start with similar clinical signs, so an exam and performing routine blood work is the first step in diagnosing the condition and ruling out other common causes.” If initial test results do not explain the cause for your pet’s abnormal behavior, or if the results suggest additional information is required, the next step may be to see a specialist. Your veterinarian can refer you to a veterinary neurologist whom can help determine what the problem is. The natural aging process can be as painless as possible for your dog if you continue routine checkups with your veterinarian, and continue to be aware of your dog’s habits.

Bon Appetit ALL AMERICAN RECIPES by Anice Shelton

July always makes me think of All-American things. Maybe it is the Independence Day celebrations. Maybe it is all the cookouts or maybe it is because baseball season is in full swing and that is about as American as it gets. So with that in mind, I would share a few “All American” recipes that are perfect for your July 4th celebration, a cookout, a potluck, or just dinner on Wednesday. And here’s the fun part---the main dishes can be done in your kitchen and do not need a grill! I’m also including a great dessert and a cocktail that will make use of the yummy summer berries. First, let’s start with dessert. I don’t bake much. Maybe one cake a year. Two, if you are lucky and I am baking one for you. But when I do bake one, it is usually Coca-Cola Cake. It’s easy and classic. So incredibly moist and tasty and it’s my most requested dessert from friends.

CLASSIC COCA-COLA CAKE ½ cup butter (1 stick) ½ cup butter flavored Crisco 1 cup Coca-Cola 3 Tbsp. cocoa powder 2 cups sugar 2 cups flour 2 cups mini marshmallows ½ cup buttermilk 1 tsp. baking soda 2 eggs, lightly beaten with a fork 1 tsp. vanilla Frosting: ½ cup butter (1 stick) 3 Tbsp. cocoa powder 6 Tbsp. Coca-Cola 16 ounces (1 box) powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Preheat oven to 350° and grease and flour a 9 X 13 pan.

10

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and Crisco together. Add in the cocoa powder and then the Coca-Cola. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from the heat. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, sift the flour and sugar together and then stir in the marshmallows. Add in the contents of the saucepan and stir to combine. Pour the buttermilk into a 1 cup measuring cup and then add in the eggs and lightly beat with a fork until combined. Then add the baking soda to this mixture (helps keep the baking soda from clumping). Add egg mixture to batter and then stir in vanilla. Pour into prepared baking pan and bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes. Test for doneness at 40 min. Let cool 30 minutes and then top with the icing.

UltraMagTexas.com

To make the icing, combine the butter, cola, and cocoa in a saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and slowly whisk in the powdered sugar. Pour over the top of the cooled cake.

FINGER LICKING RIBS

CAST IRON HAMBURGERS

Baby Back Ribs (as many racks as you want) Stubbs BBQ Rub KC Masterpiece original or Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce Molasses

Ok let’s talk burgers…and that’s just what we are going to do---talk. Because I don’t have a recipe for burgers nor do you need one. What I do have for you are some great tips for making the BEST burgers in your cast iron skillet that will elevate your burger game to the next level. First, let’s talk meat. I prefer a nice lean, organic, ground sirloin because I always try to cut fat calories and keep things on the healthy side. Plus, I don’t tend to cook my burgers past medium rare (shhhh... don’t tell the food police but sometimes I even eat them rare if I have freshly ground organic meat) so they won’t dry out. If you prefer your burgers medium to well done, I recommend you add a bit more fat to your meat mixture or you will be left with a dry tasteless hockey puck. Using 50% ground sirloin and 50% of an 80/20 mix or some ground brisket will give you a rich patty that is still moist even cooked well. So rule of thumb: the more you prefer your meat cooked, the higher you want to go in fat content.

These ribs take about 4 hours or so to cook so plan accordingly! You can’t do it any faster than 4 but you can stretch it to 5 or 6 hours, if you lower the heat. Liberally sprinkle each rack of ribs with Stubbs BBQ rub. I prefer Stubbs. It has a beautiful combination of saltiness and a touch of rosemary. No other rub compares. You can find it at most grocery stores. I prefer the plain BBQ rub to the one for pork. Let the rub sit on the ribs 30 min to an hour. Preheat oven to 450°. Put the ribs on a foil lined baking sheet and cover with foil and place in oven and cook for 15 minutes. Then immediately turn down the heat to 275° for 3-4 hours. If you need a longer cooking time turn the heat to 250°. During the last hour of cooking, mix up the sauce (1 part molasses to 2 parts sauce) and liberally baste the ribs, uncovered, every 15 minutes. If the ribs are already tender when you begin to baste, you can turn the heat down to 250°. If you want the glaze/sauce to caramelize on the ribs and become sticky turn the broiler on and stick them under it for one minute (no more!) or it will burn!

Now, here is the magic; do not over-work your meat and keep all the seasoning simple. All you need for a perfect patty is to portion your meat out and try to handle it as little as possible and simply season it with salt and pepper. That’s all. Seriously. Don’t do anything else. The meat will taste great and the real flavor of your toppings and sauces can shine through. I always make my patties slightly larger than the buns to allow for meat shrinkage. Remember that even though a nice thick patty is awesome, you gotta get it into your mouth so don’t make it too “high”! A few things to make the rest of the burger a real gourmet treat: Experiment with types of buns (onion, challah, brioche) Use a fresh baked bun (like from the bakery at the grocery store) Avocado mashed and seasoned with just salt and pepper is a great topping and can replace mayo Sauté your toppings: we love jalapenos sliced thinly and onion Vary your cheese: go beyond just American or Swiss and try Havarti, provolone, pepper jack, or sharp cheddar Flavored bacon adds a depth of flavor. Chop it up and sauté it with your onions you have an easy topper Fried egg on top? Yes please… Vary the greens: arugula, butter lettuce, and red leaf add less crunch but more flavor than iceberg

My favorite combos are: Avocado, jalapeno bacon, grilled onions and pepper jack cheese and a bit of arugula Bacon and a fried egg Spicy mayo with jalapenos and pepper jack for a spicy burger Grilled onions, bacon, sharp cheddar and BBQ sauce

Now let’s get this burger cooked and built. Before you cook your meat get your other ingredients ready to go. If you are going to cook bacon or sauté some onions, do it in the skillet before cooking the patties. Once you have it all ready, get your cast iron skillet good and hot and maybe add a tsp. of olive oil or butter (or the leftover bacon grease if you cooked some bacon) and throw your patties on. Let them get good and browned on the first side. Flip after a few minutes. If you are going to add bacon, onions, etc. I like to put those things under my cheese. So top the patty with whatever you like then throw on the cheese. Now cover your skillet. The steam and the heat created by putting a cover on will help melt the cheese. When the cheese is almost melted, I like to throw the buns into the skillet so they can heat up and brown up a bit. If there are meat juices still in the pan, you are on your way to some deliciousness. If not, lightly butter the “cut” side of the buns. Place the buns opened and cut side down in the pan and heat them up. Cover the skillet for the buns too as it will speed up the process and get them soft and yummy. Now that you have your buns and meat cooked and ready, all you have to do is build your burger and dig in! Now, how about a cocktail? The beauty of this is that you can turn the “base” into many different drinks. Continued on page 18

No, not that best friend, your four-legged best friend. The one who greets you with wet kisses after a long day at work and takes long strolls with you. Yes, your wonderful and loving pet. My dog is always excited and ready to go on an adventure. He is delighted to check out new places, new people, and is always the life of the party. His wagging tail is a dead give away that he is having a great time.

ETIQUETTE RULES FOR DINING WITH YOUR DOG: Dogs must be on leash and in the owner’s control Dogs must be well behaved

I thought about other great places could I take him besides the dog park and to his grandpa’s house. Although these are both high on his list of great places to visit, to find somewhere we both could enjoy at the same time was a real treat. Luckily, in this foodie town of Houston, there are places that welcome me and also let me bring along my bundle of energy, Hudson! Houston has allowed patio-service only, pet-friendly restaurants since 2011. However, service dogs are exempt from this restriction and have always been allowed inside restaurants. Once your pet settles into the new surroundings on the restaurant patio, it’s time to try some of tasty menu items. I’ll have a nice cold cocktail and he will enjoy a cool drink of water in his doggie bowl. If you are not willing to share your food, then I suggest you bring along a lot of doggie treats because his sad eyes will almost make it impossible to enjoy your meal. I said almost. Luckily, there are plenty other things to distract your pet while you finish your meal and afterwards you can enjoy watching all the pets getting to know each other! 12

Safe, Effective Options to Treat Pain limited, “risks are much lower” with nonopioid treatment plans. Pain or function problems are related to low-back pain, hip or knee osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia. The CDC cited “highquality evidence” supporting exercise as part of a physical therapy treatment plan for those familiar conditions. Opioids are prescribed for pain. Even in situations when opioids are prescribed, the CDC recommends that patients should receive “the lowest effective dosage” and opioids “should be combined” with nonopioid therapies, such as physical therapy.

UNDERSTANDING PAIN Before exploring and choosing long-term treatment options, consider these facts about pain:

1. 2.

Pain is output from the brain. While researchers used to believe that pain originated within the tissues of the body, newer evidence indicates that pain does not exist until the brain determines it does. The brain uses a virtual “road map” to direct an output of pain to tissues that it suspects may be in danger. This process acts as a means of communication between the brain and the tissues of the body to serve as a defense against possible injury or disease. The degree of injury does not always equal the degree of pain. Research has demonstrated that people experience pain in individual ways. While some people experience major injuries with little pain, others experience minor injuries with a lot of pain.

3.

Diagnostic imaging (MRIs, X-rays, CT scans) results may not show the cause of pain. A 2015 study in Spine, which analyzed MRI results of more than 1,200 individuals aged 20-70 who had no symptoms of lower-back pain, found that 87.6 percent suffered from bulging discs. Even most subjects in their 20s had bulging discs - 73.3 percent of males and 78 percent of females, respectively.

4.

Psychological factors, such as depression and anxiety, can make pain worse. Pain can be influenced by many different factors, such as psychological conditions. A recent study in the Journal of Pain showed that psychological variables that existed prior to a total knee replacement were related to a patient’s experience of long-term pain following the operation.

5.

Your social environment may influence your perception of pain. Many patients state their pain increases when they are at work or in a stressful situation. Pain messages can be generated when an individual is in an environment or situation that the brain interprets as unsafe. It is a fundamental form of self-protection.

6. 7.

Understanding pain through education may reduce your need for care. A large study conducted on military personnel demonstrated that those who were given a 45-minute educational session about pain sought care for lower-back pain less than their counterparts.

The brain can be tricked into developing pain in prosthetic limbs. Studies have shown that the brain can be tricked into developing a “referred” sensation in a limb that has been amputated; causing a feeling of pain that seems to come from the prosthetic limb - or from the “phantom” limb. The sensation is generated by the association of the brain’s perception of what the body is from birth (whole and complete) and what it currently is (post-amputation).

8.

The ability to determine left from right may be altered when you experience pain. Networks within the brain that assist you in determining left from right can be affected when you experience severe pain. If you have been experiencing pain and have noticed your sense of direction is a bit off, it may be because the part of the brain that details a path to each part of the body may be impaired.

9.

There is no way of knowing whether you have a high pain tolerance or not. While some people claim to have a “high tolerance” for pain, there is no accurate way to measure or compare pain tolerance among individuals. While some tools exist to measure how much force you can resist before experiencing pain, it can’t be determined what your pain “feels like.” Source: American Physical Therapy Association

GATO THE DOG Honest Lies and Other Misguided Thoughts By Newt Harlan

I think I may have mentioned my longtime friend, Fat Myrtle, to y’all a few times. If not, let’s just say she’s an old friend with a lot of oil money. Actually this time it’s not Fat Myrtle I’m going to tell y’all about, but her dumb dog, Gato. Just in case y’all haven’t heard about Gato, Myrtle got him as a just weaned pup back when she was still a full-time resident out at Basura Blanca. He’s a yellow haired dog, mostly Cocker spaniel. I swear that dang dog is so dumb that he makes a pet rock look smart. Myrtle wanted an exotic name for the pup when she got him and I lied and told her that Gato meant dog in Russian*. She decided that had a nice ring to it, so from then on the pup was named Gato.

and it was great fun to capture the roaches and chomp on them and play with them. It wasn’t too long until he was foaming at the mouth and Mavis panicked. She went to hollering and running down the street, yelling for everyone in the trailer park to get inside because there was a “mad dog” on the loose and our very lives were in mortal danger. All the commotion woke old man Joe Horace Doke from his nap and he came to see what was going on. Joe Horace being a retired mailman has seen lots of dogs in his years, both mad and otherwise and knew right off that Gato wasn’t mad -- crazy and stupid, but not mad. Anyway, Joe Horace got finally got Mavis settled down and they watched as Gato continued his game with the roaches and it didn’t take long to figure out what was causing the mouth foaming problem. Instead of solving the problem and ending the situation, this only stirred the pot and directly my phone rang. “Newt, you’ve got to hurry out here and see about this dog of Myrtle’s. We need to get him to the vet, he’s been eating these danged poisoned roaches and he’s liable to die and I’d never forgive myself if I let my friend’s dog die while it was in my care”, Mavis hollered into the phone.

When Fat Myrtle left town the first time, she left her house in Mavis’ care. The dog came with the house and there he’s remained ever since. Anyway, I’m supposed to be the overseer of the whole mess in Myrtle’s absence and that’s how I wound up having to make a trip to the vet with the dang dog. It seems that Mavis had been having trouble with those big old tree roaches coming into the house due to all the winter weather we experienced. Y’all know the kind of roaches I’m talking about, the ones that are 3 or 4 inches long and scare the hell out of transplanted Yankees for the first few years after their arrival. Anyway, in an effort to get rid of them, Mavis put out an application of roach poison. It worked really well, but the problem was the roaches didn’t die off right away when they came contact with it. At first they acted kind of dopey like -- staggering around, going in circles -- kind of like folks do when it’s closing time at the beer joint.

I really couldn’t see where it was any of my affair, but on the other hand, since Mavis was so terribly upset, I figured that I’d better go on over there and check on the dog. By the time I reached the house, Mavis had calmed down somewhat and was sitting out on the stoop drinking a beer - a cold beer has an amazing calmative effect on some people - and she pointed out poor old foamy-mouthed Gato, still playing with the roaches. Don’t ask me why she didn’t put the dog up out of harm’s

way when she put out the poison, because I haven’t a clue. Anyway, nothing else would do except for me to load up the aforementioned stupid dog in my truck and haul him in to see Doc Grayson at the animal hospital. You can bet your last dollar there was no way I was letting that stupid, slobbering mutt ride in the cab of my truck, so I put a leash on him and clipped the other end to a tie-down, just like I do with the hounds when I’m hunting. Mavis was having none of this. She was afraid that Gato might jump out and be hanging by the leash. She figured either I wouldn’t notice or wouldn’t stop or both and Gato would be dragged along until there wasn’t much of anything left to drag--and to tell the truth, she was probably pretty close to right. Anyway, she and her little (younger) sister, Sissy climbed up in the back of my truck to keep old Gato company. Boy, what a sight they made riding down the road, two buxom, pulchritudinous young ladies and one foamymouthed dog, all with their blonde hair flying in the breeze. Gato really got into it and barked hello to all the dogs and people along the way while the girls waved to everybody like they were in the county fair parade instead of going to the vet. To make a long story short, we got to the vet and Doc Grayson just drenched the stupid dog with doggy Ex-Lax and told us to keep an eye on him for a few days and not to let him eat any more roaches. Two hours and $225 later I’d delivered the girls and the dog back out to Basura Blanca and was down at the watering hole with Dogeye and Hogjaw and some of the gang, drinking a few cold ones and doing some serious pondering and cogitating on cockroaches, dumb dogs, pretty girls and the other vagaries we face as we travel the roads of life. *Gato is not Russian for dog--Gato is Spanish for cat. If the dog weren’t so dumb, he’d probably have a complex from being called cat all of his life. In case you’re wondering, the Russian word for dog is sobaka.

SUMMER BERRY COCKTAIL I love a good refreshing cocktail. In the summer, I especially enjoy one that is a tad sweet but with a little pucker to keep it balanced. I have discovered that if I make the berry/lemon base and keep it in a mason jar in the fridge, I can whip up a cocktail in no time. Berry/Lemon base: Fresh berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, or a combo) Fresh Meyer lemons In a cocktail shaker or clean jar, throw in a cup of berries and mash and muddle until most of the berries are broken up and starting to release their juices. If you don’t like seeds, run the muddled berries through a strainer. Put the mashed berries into a mason jar and squeeze in the juice of two Meyer lemons. Refrigerate for a few hours. Shake mixture before adding to your cocktail shaker. Now what can you do with that berry mixture? The possibilities are endless but my favorite thing to do is to fill a glass with ice, throw in a couple of heaping tablespoons of the berries, add in a few ounces of vodka (plain or flavored), top with any flavor of LaCroix water and stir...it makes a light refreshing spritzer that is perfect for a hot July day. (And it is just as tasty without the vodka for a non-alcoholic drink). I also use the berries in a martini by adding a few Tbsp. to my cocktail shaker, pouring in a few ounces of vodka, adding ice and shaking. It’s like summer in a glass. Add the berry mixture to your favorite margarita recipe for a fresh take on a strawberry margarita. Mix it with lemon-lime soda for your own version of a berry lemonade. So refreshing in the Houston heat! And one last thing you can do with it. Add the muddled berry/lemon mixture to the top of angel food or pound cake for an easy summer dessert. Enjoy your summer my friends. These recipes will keep you in the air-conditioned kitchen yet still give you that “cooked outside” flavor. ULTRA LEGAL

BIOGRAPHY & DISCLAIMER

Landlord - Tenant 101 (or Can My Landlord REALLY do that?) Courtesy of Byron K. Barclay

BYRON K. BARCLAY

The landlord/tenant relationship is a distinct relationship in the law, since there are few situations where two different people have legal rights to the same piece of property, with distinctions as to what can be done by each one, and when it can be done. The landlord-tenant relationship can be fraught with problems though, usually because one party or the other doesn’t follow the law. Some of the most common problems (and answers) can be found in Chapter 92 of the TEXAS PROPERTY CODE. The lease is the single most important document in the landlord-tenant relationship. It is a contract, with terms that control nearly EVERYTHING between the parties, and will be the first thing either party should consult when a problem arises. As a tenant, you should make sure that you always have a copy of your lease, signed by both parties, in a safe and accessible place. It is a good idea to have multiple copies of your lease available to you, not just in your home, but also your office and a copy in your car. Your lease, along with Chapter 92 of the TEXAS PROPERTY CODE can help you navigate 99% of landlord-tenant problems. Don’t leave home without it! Reading through the lease with your landlord/tenant gives each party an opportunity to ask and answer, or clarify issues that may be unclear. Better yet, reading through the lease before signing it gives both parties the opportunity to clarify and negotiate specific issues that will go a long way towards a positive and fruitful landlord/tenant relationship. As an example, the tenant could negotiate a larger pet deposit to allow and secure your pet that might be a little larger than normally allowed in the property. You also will have an opportunity to understand completely the move-out procedure required by the lease, including the manner that you must use to properly give notice of your intent to leave. Return of the security deposit is dependent on proper notice at the end of the lease, so neither party should be unclear about the process. You should take notes, and pictures when you or a new tenant begins a new lease of a property, and share them with your landlord/tenant. The condition of the property will likely be forgotten when the lease is concluded, but the notes and pictures will help both parties when determining whether monies should be paid for damages to the property, or if the changes between move in and move out is just “normal wear and tear.” Most landlords require a security deposit to ensure the property is properly cared for; so being able to document and corroborate the property’s condition can be helpful should a dispute arise. Finally, both parties should follow the terms of the lease, to the letter, throughout the lease term. Breaching the lease will almost always void the legal remedies under the TEXAS PROPERTY CODE that would otherwise control the landlord/tenant relationship. (Read that last sentence again. Slowly). If you are in breach of the lease, it will be difficult to impossible to get a Court to grant a remedy that you ask, so don’t breach your lease. When moving out, take pictures again, and follow the terms of the lease to the letter to provide notice of your move-out, including providing your forwarding address. As always, the best time to get some legal advice about your lease is before you have a problem, so don’t hesitate to ask your lawyer to review your lease before you sign it. THAT is money well spent. 20

ULTRA SPORTS

ARE YOU READY

for some summer football? By Bobby McCallitt

The offseason is anything but for a growing number of high school football players. Seven-on-seven passing leagues are putting football players back on the fields in June and July rather than August. What is 7-on-7 football? It’s actually not much different than the backyard football games you played as a kid. There are no running plays – all passes – and you are down when touched by a member of the other team. Three plays to make a first down. No kicking. Really pretty simple. Seven-on-seven is an event bred out of necessity. Football is the first sport played when school starts in the fall, and players typically haven’t picked up a football in months. It’s played exclusively in the fall, and then it’s over. Given the size of most all Houston area high schools, the 2-sport athlete has almost become extinct. If a kid wants to play one of the “big 3” sports (football, basketball, or baseball), they really have to decide which one suits them best and stick to that one sport. Because of this specialization of the various sports, they tend to last year-round. Basketball players have AAU and summer leagues. Baseball players have both summer and fall leagues. But what do football players have? They certainly can’t hit and tackle each other year round; besides, wearing pads in the summer would be miserably hot. So the 7-on-7 passing league was born, and in a short period of time, it has become very popular and actually quite beneficial as these games have become a natural opportunity for kids to progress. As the patriarch of 7-on-7 football in Texas, former high school and college coach Dick Olin is amazed at the number of kids involved. 22

77 on

“When we started back in 1996, it was just 4 teams,” Olin says. But he takes little credit for the games’ growth and evolution into the huge player-development resource that it has become. Olin just wanted to give his kids something to do in the offseason. “If kids don’t have a way to throw and catch the football,” Olin says, “they are going to find other sports to occupy their summer.” So it was that back in 1996, as head coach at Baytown Lee High School, Olin gathered a group of local coaches and proposed a 7-on-7 game. Starting out with just 4 teams that first year, then a small 8-team tournament the next, it has continued to grow and quickly blossomed into a state-wide event. In Texas, rules limit coaches’ involvement with their teams because if coaches were involved, it would almost certainly mandate kids to take part. Plus it would lose some of the fun. Instead, high school coaches often organize school teams that are then run by fathers or former players, and player participation is strictly voluntary. While high school coaches are not allowed to coach their players, they are allowed to observe the games. Many a high school quarterback can be found as the mouthpiece of a coaching staff, calling the plays under coaches’ watchful eyes. Texas high schools play against each other and compete in State Qualifying Tournaments (SQT) held throughout the state. Each SQT

follows similar procedures in allowing teams to qualify for the State 7-on-7 Tournament held in July each year on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.

LUXE Décor

The first State Tournament was held in 1998 and consisted of 32 teams (of all sizes) competing in one division. The field expanded to 64 teams from 2000 thru 2006. In 2007, it doubled in size and was divided into its current format – two divisions (Division 1: 5A & 6A, Division 2: 1A-4A) each consisting of 64 teams.

by Karen Bunch

Seven-on-seven football has grown not only in participation, but in relevance to the college coaches who recruit Texas high schools. With prostyle passing offenses so prevalent in college football today, precision route running by receivers and accurate throws by quarterbacks are a necessity. When participating in 7-on-7, quarterbacks are given the opportunity to throw and receivers the opportunity to catch. Defensive backs are given the opportunity to cover these receivers while getting used to the speed of the Varsity game, as many are coming off the Freshman or Junior Varsity teams. “If you’re doing 7-on-7, that means you’re doing something in the summer for your kids, and that’s great,” said Dick Olin. “That’s why we did it. We had our center snap the ball, we had our running backs, our receivers, and our quarterback all working and learning. We worked our defense, we worked our offense – and we did it all summer.” “The more you practice, the better you get,” Olin states. “These kids now have an opportunity to run their high school offenses and defenses in the summer. If you can do that, you’re going to keep getting better and better.” Seven-on-seven summer football could very well be why so many recent NFL quarterbacks have come out of the state of Texas. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Andy Dalton, Ryan Tannehill, and Matthew Stafford, just to name a few, have all attributed some of their development to Texas 7-on-7 football. And while many praise 7-on-7’s contributions to aiding offenses, former NFL player Antonio Armstrong, a personal trainer here in Houston, is impressed with how it aids in preparing defensive players for what they will certainly see once the season starts. “When I was at Kashmere, before going to Texas A&M, 7-on-7 didn’t exist.” Armstrong says. “As a defensive player, 7-on-7 would have better prepared me for what I could have expected at the next level. Things like learning coverages, leverage, zone integrity, and route combinations are all things defensive players gain knowledge of during 7-on-7.” Armstrong also added, “Once I got to college, 7-on-7 was actually a part of our practice schedule.”

people are currently diagnosed with the disease in the United States and it is estimated that millions more have it without realizing. About half of both primary care physicians and nurse practitioners cite the challenge of patients not fully disclosing symptoms as a barrier to diagnosis. Many people suffering from the signs of COPD – such as shortness of breath, chronic cough and wheezing – often chalk them up to seasonal allergies, the common cold or simply consequences of growing older. Luckily, in 2015, among those who have exhibited the symptoms, about three-quarters indicated they had spoken to their health care providers about these breathing issues, according to the results of the annual DocStyles and HealthStyles surveys of public health attitudes, knowledge, practices and lifestyle habits conducted each year by Porter Novelli. A majority of patients left these discussions with simple action items intended to help them manage their symptoms and prevent them from worsening.
