In a collaborative partnership with University of Central Florida, undergraduate and graduate degree programs benefit from Southeastern being the only university in the region to use the TeachLiveE Avatar Virtual Classroom. This virtual teaching experience provides students a unique opportunity to practice the craft of teaching in an environment where mistakes can be made, reflections/suggestions given, and additional practice conducted. This program offers individual‐ ized field experiences that prepare teachers for real world experiences in a non‐judgmental learning environment.

About Louisiana’s Teacher Education Programs Do all of Louisiana’s teacher candidates come from tradi onal teacher prepara on programs? No. According to the Board of Regents, in 2010‐11, a total of 1,183 teacher candidates completed undergradu‐ ate teacher prepara on programs; 1,109 teacher candidates completed alternate programs offered by public and private universi es; and 528 teacher candidates completed alternate programs offered by private provid‐ ers. What does it mean for a teacher educa on program to be “na onally accredited?” The Na onal Council for Accredita on of Teacher Educa on (NCATE) is a na onal accredi ng body for schools, colleges, and departments of educa on that is authorized by the U.S. Department of Educa on. All UL System ins tu ons are accredited by NCATE. NCATE determines which schools, colleges, and departments of educa on meet rigorous na onal standards in preparing teachers and other school specialists for the classroom. It indicates that the school underwent rigor‐ ous external review by professionals, that the performance of a teacher candidate in the program has been thoroughly assessed before he or she is recommended for licensure, and that programs meet standards set by the teaching profession at large.
How have Louisiana teacher candidates performed on licensure examina ons? In 2010‐11, 98‐100 percent of all undergraduate teacher candidates passed all teacher licensure examina ons (e.g., Praxis) prior to comple on of their programs, and 100 percent of all alternate teacher candidates passed all teacher licensure examina ons prior to comple on of their programs. What is the Praxis? Test publisher ETS describes the Praxis tests on its website: The Praxis Series™ tests measure teacher candidates’ knowledge and skills and its passage is required of all teacher graduates at UL System ins tu ons. According to test publisher, ETS, the tests are used for licensing and cer fica on processes and include: Praxis I ® Pre‐Professional Skills Tests (PPST®) These tests measure basic skills in reading, wri ng and math‐ ema cs. In addi on to licensure, these tests are o en used to qualify candidates for entry into a teacher ed‐ uca on program. See Praxis I informa on. Praxis II ® Subject Assessments These tests measure subject‐specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject‐specific teaching skills, that you need for beginning teaching. About Louisiana’s Teacher Education Programs What is a Value‐Added Assessment of Teacher Prepara on Programs? It is a model that uses student achievement in core subjects (language arts, mathema cs, reading, science and social studies) to assess the effec veness of teacher prepara on programs. The Louisiana Department of Educa on assigns all teachers (who teach in tested grade levels in public schools in Louisiana) value‐added scores, based upon the extent to which their students met predicted growth in achievement. The scores are expressed as a label that corresponds with percen le ranges of value‐added scores for all individual teachers: Ineffec ve (at or below 10th percen le), Effec ve Emerging (11th to 49th per‐ cen le), Effec ve Proficient (50th to 79th percen le) and Highly Effec ve (80th percen le and above). The 50th percen le represents the average performance of all teachers with students in the tested grades in public schools in Louisiana. All teacher prepara on programs with value‐added scores have a minimum of one content area where 50 per‐ cent or more of their first and second year teachers’ value‐added scores are within the Effec ve Proficient or Highly Effec ve ranges, based upon the 2010‐11 scores of all individual teachers in Louisiana. According to the Board of Regents, it had been an cipated that the majority of new teachers would be in the Effec ve Emerging range since they were beginning teachers; however, a greater percentage than an cipated of first‐ and second‐year teachers had value‐added scores in the Effec ve Proficient and Highly Effec ve ranges.
