“My brother has cerebral palsy, so I’ve always been interested in people with physical disabilities. We are really close, and he’s pretty much my motivation for everything.” Chase Petruska, MSc student Major: Neuroscience Pursuing research he’s keenly interested in was Chase Petruska’s reason for choosing ULethbridge. His work in Dr. Gerlinde Metz’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) led to a powerchair soccer program for people with physical disabilities. “When I came to Lethbridge and saw no specific activity for individuals in powerchairs, I thought it would be a good idea to look at this powerchair soccer intervention and then we could also measure the impact it made on their resilience and mental health.” “We found individuals with physical disabilities were more susceptible to stressful situations and social isolation. We also found that individuals who had nonfamily caretakers reported more depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as a decrease in physical activity.” “We are very grateful the University makes research possible and, at the same time, enables the powerchair soccer program. It helps community members in dire need of an intervention and social support.” Read more about Chase’s experience and the Metz lab’s research

Quantum Horizons Alberta: A magnet for high-calibre researchers The new $25-million Quantum Horizons Alberta (QHA) project, a partnership between the University of Lethbridge, UAlberta and UCalgary, is poised to boost our renown in quantum science research. Physics and astronomy professor and theoretical physicist, Dr. Saurya Das, leads QHA work at ULethbridge. “Often, revolutionary ideas have come from the younger minds,” says Das, adding mentorship from

experienced researchers is crucial. Mentors help put matters in context and recognize which ideas have the greatest potential. The amount and quality of research conducted at ULethbridge has grown substantially since Das joined ULethbridge. EXPERIENCE campus COMMUNITY Students are the focus of everything we do at ULethbridge. We foster an inspirational learning community where you can create, inquire and discover while you grow personally, academically and professionally.

As a ULethbridge graduate student, you’ll be part of a vibrant and active community of scholars. Here, you’re a junior partner and colleague. With more than 715 graduate students, our size and

approach give you an advantage as you network and learn from experts across all fields. In a collaborative environment between faculty and students, you’ll have flexibility in your learning paths and research activities, as well as opportunities to mentor undergraduates.

With colleagues and professors from around the world, you’ll share in intellectual debate and dialogue, both in and out of the classroom, in a culture that respects differing opinions, forming new insights and celebrating each other’s successes.

Piiksipitaakii, Andrea True Joy Fox (BA/BEd ‘09) chose ULethbridge for her graduate program because she enjoyed an incredible undergrad experience here, when she shared meaningful connections with colleagues and instructors.

“As a graduate student, I love being part of the research team that collaborates on the Blackfoot Digital Arts Project and the Grasslands Project with Dr. Josephine Mills, Blackfoot Elders, faculty and students.” “It was important for me to complete my studies on Blackfoot territory, where ULethbridge is located; having that physical connection to the places my ancestors have walked through before has made it very meaningful for me.”

Experience Support “Finishing my MFA and PhD are big accomplishments, but I wouldn’t say they are the biggest. My biggest accomplishment is actually the relationships I’ve made here with faculty, other students, community members and the place itself.” Migueltzinta Solís (MFA ‘19, PhD ‘23), is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, cycling enthusiast and Assistant Professor of Art.

Making campus safe and inclusive The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team works collaboratively with the campus community to build a common understanding and a shared vision to move ULethbridge forward. Building an inclusive culture is a collective responsibility that can only be achieved by disrupting and dismantling systemic issues that hinder the growth of historically excluded groups. ULethbridge’s first Vice-Provost, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Martha Mathurin-Moe (top), with EDI project manager Nando Ortega Arango.

Master of Science in Management Concentration: Business Analytics

To thrive in school and in life, children need a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy.

In our data-driven economy, business analytics is a crucial tool for organizational competitiveness and profitability.

Using research-informed best practices, the MEd Literacies and Numeracies theme highlights the ways humans develop language, interpretation and communication skills, in both written and oral cultures.

“In this MEd cohort, teachers will explore the science and complexity of literacy. This balances decoding, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency skills with a love of reading and writing.” Dr. Robin Bright (BASc ‘79, BEd ‘82, MEd ‘88) Professor, Faculty of Education

With an increased demand for addiction services in the last decade, Dr. Bonnie Lee, health sciences professor, has developed an innovative therapy model focusing on couple relationships. “There is a long tradition of dealing with addiction as an individual problem that impacts family members. Treatment typically focuses on that individual as the principal and identified patient. The Congruence Couple Therapy (CCT) model flipped from putting the onus on the lone individual to focusing on the larger relational context contribuing to addiction. For example, we don’t view gambling and alcohol use as the primary problem in CCT, but as a symptom of an underlying system dysfunction. The consequences of adverse childhood experiences are most exposed in intimate relationships, making them prime sites of intervention.” Dr. Bonnie Lee Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences Founder, Graduate Certificate in Couple & Family Counselling Studies

Ask Dr. Feng Jiao, business analyst and ULethbridge associate professor, what drives financial knowledge and decision-making and he’ll sum it up in one word: data. “Naturally, most financial firms generate lots of data. Data, in turn, has revolutionized finance. Machine learning has been used to provide real-time stock market insights, artificial intelligence helps fraud detection and prevention, and business process automation maintains accurate risk analysis.

Data analysis improves the decision-making process significantly. Rather than merely relying on intuition, managers look increasingly to data. Our Business Analytics concentration is a great opportunity to get ahead of the curve and lay the foundation for long-term success.”

All of these call for a significant demand for talent with strong data analytical skills. 21

“When I first came to ULethbridge as a 17-yearold, I hadn’t really planned on any of this. You start by making connections with professors, and I’ve been lucky to have really passionate professors teaching me undergraduate physics and inspiring me to join a research group and take it to the next level. I really owe it all to my department and all who taught me.” Alicia Anderson (BSc ’20, MSc ‘22) has always aimed high — her study of astrophysics can attest to that — earning her one of the highest honours in academia: the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. In the award’s 22-year history, only four other Canadians have earned it: one a physics student and the other three astronomy students.
