UNIVERSITY OF THE INCARNATE WORD HIRES A NEW FOOTBALL HEAD COACH During the Holiday Break, the University of the Incarnate Word hired UCF offensive coordinator G.J. Kinne to become its new head football coach. The change came after the program lost former head coach Eric Morris took the offensive coordinator position at Washington State. "My vision for this program is simple: to be champions," Kinne, 33, said on Twitter. "This isn't a rebuild, I know that....there are high expectations...that's the fun part for me. I'm a Texas guy through and through and I'm going to come back home and win... and win big." Kinne is a former professional quarterback with stints in the NFL and the Canadian Football League. He also played his senior year of high school at East Texas' Gilmer High School under current UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor. He later coached with Traylor at Southern Methodist University and Arkansas. While with the UCF Knights, Kinne helped lead an offense that averaged nearly 400 yards of total offense per game. UCF also finished the regular season ranked second in the nation in 4th-down conversions, moving the chains on 81.82 percent of its attempts. The Knights finished the 2021 regular season with a 9-4 overall record, including a victory over Florida in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl.

The Benefits of Keeping a Gratitude Journal, From a Skeptic BY Grace Spiewak January 10, 2022

I never thought gratitude journaling was for me. It seemed cliché and monotonous. I know what I’m grateful for, and I didn’t see how writing about it would solidify my thankfulness. But as I moved through the slog of a quiet and lonely winter colored by pandemic-induced restrictions and social limitations, I knew I needed to try something new last January. Gratitude journaling came to mind, probably because I’d read it on so many listicles offering tips for destressing. I needed to reinvigorate my prayer practice, learn to appreciate the life I was living, and notice the joys in my daily routine. So, on January 4, 2021, I gave gratitude journaling a try. Every night, I

scan or click

pulled out my notebook and listed five good things that happened to me each day. I told myself I’d stick with it for at least a few weeks and see what happened, still unconvinced that the routine would propel me out of spiritual stagnation.

MESSAGES COVID-19 REMINDERS FROM UIW BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES FROM THE OFFICE OF STUDENT ADVOCACY AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE UIW MEDICAL TEAM FROM UIW COUNSELING SERVICES

COVID-19

INFORMATION Where can I get tested on campus? Employees and students may be tested through the UIW Curative kiosk located at Founders Hall (4119 Broadway) or the School of Osteopathic Medicine campus. For scheduling and additional information, visit UIW COVID-19 Testing. You can obtain a list of test centers near you through the national directory by texting your zip code to 438829. UIW Health Services offers COVID-19 rapid antigen testing and PCR testing. Visit UIW Health Services website for important updates, cost information and additional details. You may also test at one of the public testing facilities, the City of San Antonio offers this list of local testing locations. What is UIW’s mask policy? The use of COVID-19 related facial masks is required indoors by those who are vaccinated as well as persons not vaccinated. Masks should only be removed when alone in a private office, private living space, or while eating (social distancing should be maintained while eating). Be reminded that masks are not a substitute for social distancing. No consumption of food or drinks is allowed inside classrooms during class sessions, except for medical reasons. This policy is not intended to conflict with requirements for health care settings. Athletics will notify UIW when exceptions are requested due to potential conflicts with NCAA regulations. UIW expects everyone to abide by the provisions of this policy, whether vaccinated or not. Where can I get a COVOD-19 vaccine? UIW Health Services offers vaccinations and boosters. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 210-829-6017.

COMMUNITY

MESSAGES Shared Responsibility and

Acknowledgement of Pandemic

We are living in unique and uncertain times. None of us can know what the future holds for sure, but at the University of the Incarnate Word, we know this – we are dedicated to providing our students with a full University experience in Spring 2022. We at UIW are working hard and are confident that the academic and non-academic support services and curriculum will be the excellent academic, collegial and productive experience that drew you to UIW, whether delivered live, in a hybrid environment, or entirely remotely. We recognize that you are seeking certainty; we all are. COVID-19, the virus responsible for the current global pandemic, is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. Research supports that the virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. In addition, many people who contract the virus may be asymptomatic and unknowingly spread the virus. However, the full extent of how the virus transmits is unknown. Currently, there is no vaccine available for the virus nor known treatment for the adverse effects attributed to COVID-19. The risk of exposure and possible infection is real and present in any community environment where large numbers of people are regularly interacting, including on campuses at UIW. We are engaged in numerous efforts to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the spread of COVID-19 on our campuses. Efforts include increased cleaning, implementation of mask and face-covering protocols, social distancing, hand sanitizing stations, and other mitigation strategies. Despite the University’s best efforts, it is impossible to eliminate the risk of positive cases or an outbreak on our campuses – while still operating on-campus classes, residential housing, and campus events. We cannot guarantee that people present on our campuses will not be exposed to and become infected with COVID-19. By engaging in the on-campus community of UIW, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. As a Catholic institution of faith and education, UIW is committed to acknowledging and honoring the dignity of every person, as each is created in the image of God. We must all take steps to care for each other. Taking steps to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infections (or any other spread of disease) at UIW and in our community is a shared responsibility and a critical part of caring for all who live, work and learn with us. Students can help keep our community healthy by being mindful of their actions at all times and following the on-campus health and safety protocols. Please understand that whether on any UIW campus or remote, a few things are certain: UIW holds as paramount the health, safety and welfare of every member of its community. None of us can guarantee what shape COVID-19 will take, and none of us – including UIW – can guarantee a COVID-19-free environment. This is simply not feasible. We want to be sure that you appreciate and understand that, by coming onto the physical campus of UIW, there is a risk you may contract COVID-19. We certainly do not wish this on anyone, and we are taking recommended steps to mitigate this risk, but we cannot categorically guarantee this will not happen. Every member of our community – including you – must do their part. This means adhering to national, state, local, and university health and safety guidelines and requirements, whether on or off campus, including complying with mandatory reporting guidelines of the CDC and UIW. Specific details will be provided as circumstances dictate, but this may include such things as: temperature checks, social distancing, wearing masks or other facial coverings, using other PPE, reporting suspected and positive infections, not reporting to class or work if sick, and isolating and quarantining when required. You agree to do all of this not just for yourself, but for the safety of others, and because this is consistent with the Mission and spirit of how we care for one another at UIW.

At this time, we do not provide services on weekends or holidays, but we are happy to direct you toward any needed weekend resources. Here are some tips for managing anxiety at this time:

Do things you enjoy, no matter what they are. You could read through the pile of books you’ve been accumulating or play video games if it keeps your mind from worry mode and makes you happy! Virtually hang out with friends. There are tons of apps you can use to hang out with your friends and family. You can have a virtual meetup with Zoom, play games together on Discord, and FaceTime or Skype with your older family members. Engage in physical activity and workouts, as well as in activities involving deep breathing, stretching, and meditation. Take a walk around your neighborhood or stream yoga and attempt that pose you've always been wanting to do. Engage in spiritual practices and virtual spiritual gatherings. Many churches and other places of worship are live streaming services throughout the week. They are also offering virtual Bible studies and prayer sessions. Create routines for yourself and set small goals for what you would like to accomplish daily. Remind yourself that this time of quarantine is temporary and we are all doing the best we can!
