SPARC Metastatic Breast Cancer Challenge

A first-of-its-kind initiative to address the specific needs of patients living with metastatic breast cancer worldwide

The SPARC MBC Challenge is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) supported by Pfizer Inc. First launched on World Cancer Day 2015, it now enters its second phase with new grants awarded in October 2017.

A bold challenge for positive change The Seeding Progress and Resources for the Cancer Community: Metastatic Breast Cancer Challenge (SPARC MBC Challenge) aims to empower advocacy groups, hospital networks, support groups, and other organisations worldwide as they initiate projects to address the specific needs of women living with metastatic breast cancer. Grants are awarded for projects focused on closing the gap in information, support, awareness, and policy between metastatic breast cancer and early breast cancer, as well as helping reduce the number of women first diagnosed at the metastatic stage of the disease. In addition to the grants, the SPARC MBC Challenge follows the progress and results for all funded projects, provides mentorship to the awardees and facilitates networking and sharing of best practices among the organisations selected to address the challenges facing the metastatic breast cancer community globally.

“The tools, guidance and overall input provided by UICC were exemplary. We are very appreciative of the training and networking opportunities offered, which are of great value." Teodora Kolarova, APOZ and Friends, Bulgaria

Addressing gaps in metastatic breast cancer services Metastatic breast cancer (Stage IV) is the most advanced stage of breast cancer, where the disease has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body and for which there is currently no cure1. Metastatic breast cancer is associated with a multitude of significant consequences impacting patients, caregivers, healthcare systems, and societies2, 3. Despite the burden of the disease, there are fewer patient and community resources available for women with metastatic breast cancer compared with earlystage disease, often leaving these patients alone and alienated at a time of greatest need3.

2015 SPARC projects The twenty 2015 awardees included organisations like Instituto Oncoguia, a non-profit that launched Network Plus Life (Rede + Vida), bringing together metastatic breast cancer patients from different regions of Brazil for training on how to provide support and information to other metastatic breast cancer patients; as well as the Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence (BCCOE) in Rwanda, which created its first support group for rural women fighting metastatic disease.

Another 20 grantee organisations worldwide awarded in 2017 Awardees were selected through a competitive application process overseen by an external, multidisciplinary selection committee formed by UICC. In total, 20 organisations from 19 countries have been selected to receive grants amounting to $500,000 (USD).

These organisations are implementing a diverse range of projects that provide resources and support for women living with metastatic breast cancer and their loved ones, increase awareness of metastatic disease, and influence policies within their local communities.
