YOUR STORY Campus Recreation employees and patrons are each unique, and therefore uniquely effected by the programs and facilities provided. Each has their own story to tell.

MY PASSION One always felt comfort when met with the warm smile of Shannon Henderson, Welcome Desk Attendant, Building Supervisor, and Group Fitness Instructor. Shannon was an Elementary Education Major and employee of Campus Recreation.

It's made me step up and become a leader; I'm someone that students and patrons know to go to if they have a problem.

18

PART OF THE REC At the CRWC, Shannon could be seen with fellow co-workers at the Welcome desk as a building supervisor, or kicking with students as a Zumba Instructor. Shannon enjoyed interacting with the various patrons that walked through the door and strived to be an example to others around her. When asked what her favorite thing about the Rec Center was, she replied, “There’s two; definitely the people I work with, and just meeting so many people and being someone they can look up to and then also just the amazing Zumba classes I have.” Shannon was dependable to those in need and determined to meet the expectations of those around

who takes charge and rise up to the leading role. “It’s made me step up and become a leader - I’m someone that the students and patrons know to go to if they have a problem. I feel that all the student staff that I supervise know that if they have a problem and they need something, they can come to me and I will solve it to the best of my abilities.”

FUTURE PLANS Shannon planned to pursue a career as a 1st or 2nd grade elementary school teacher in Houston. She desired to take all that she learned working for Campus Recreation and incorporate it into her future occupation. Shannon explained, “Just like in teaching Zumba, to have the confidence to get in front of a room of people, and do what you love, or just working with people that look up to me, will enable me to lead children just as well as I lead adults.” 19

Student Association as we competed at UH's first ever talent competition called Nasha in 2008. We used to practice almost daily at the Rec Center and would take the time in between breaks to get to know each other more. Practice was held in one of the rooms, and sometimes, if it was booked, we would use the common area next to the rec center offices. Our team ended up winning first place that year. I would say the practices at the Rec center were the most memorable and fun times that we had at UH together.
