We were blown away by the calibre of entries this year so couldn’t wait to share the winning poems with you all. Well done to everyone who entered! Below is one of our prize-winning poems...
Two well-attended events celebrating the succesful 14th Annual Upper Hutt Poetry Awards were held at Upper Hutt City Library as part of National Poetry Day festivities. Judges vetted over 180 fantastic entries from all over New Zealand, following the theme “Remembrance”. Somewhere Between by Margaret Beverland The kaumatua said not to go out the day four young men launched their yachts to sail from Hatepe to Western Bay. One’s Dad promised to follow all the way in his power boat on that clear January day the kaumatua said not to go out. There was no white horses in the sky, no white caps on the lake, the day seemed right to sail from Hatepe to Western Bay. The father raced ahead across the lake to set up camp, he saw no reason to delay the day the kaumatua said not to go out. The four never made it to the other side, Three bodies were found, our boy forever lost somewhere between Hatepe and Western Bay. Fifty years on, the wind blowing raw, We gather at Hatepe and recall the kaumatua’s warning not to go out.

MEMORIES OF MAIN STREET Pop-Up Museum, 2nd Floor of The Mall, runs from 24-27 September, 10am-3pm, Free Photographic displays of Main Street over the decades, from Upper Hutt City Library Heritage Collections. Visitors will be invited to digitally record their own memories of Main Street or bring in their own photos for scanning, thereby adding to the Heritage Collections.

Library volunteers recognised for their work We’re very proud to have our volunteers recognised for the awesome work they are doing! Both our ‘Computer Mentors’ and ‘Friends of the Upper Hutt City Library Heritage Collection’ volunteer groups received nominations for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. The Friends of the Heritage Collection were even awarded ’Runner Up’ in the 2014 Heritage and Environment category.

Computer Mentors voluntarily provide assistance to individuals using the Library’s free internet computers. They teach computer skills and help raising users’ digital literacy and confidence. Computer Mentors are available at the adult computers Monday to Saturday from 10am to 12 noon. The Friends of the Heritage Collections volunteers perform a variety of tasks to support the Upper Hutt City Library’s Heritage Collections. This includes researching and cataloguing
