Someone once said happy minds create prosperity. Thus, the theme of Edufest 2016 is Happiness. In 2012, the United Nations launched the ‘Happiness Index’, a novel way of measuring countries’ development levels. Nations are ranked according to their performance on the index, and the results are published in the annual World Happiness Report.

In the 2016 edition of the Report, Denmark tops the happiness ranking, while India is in the 118th position. Bhutan, the first country to use Gross National Happiness (GNH) as its main development indicator, is in 84th place. Syria ranked 156th, i.e., last. Clearly, as a nation we need to focus more on generating and spreading happiness, and Udaan is playing its part through Edufest 2016. Kudos to Dr. Anil K Luniya and Murali Aiyer for choosing Happiness as the theme for this year’s event. No amount of wealth can help a nation if its people remain unhappy. On a recent visit to Japan, I learnt that the government has started classes for people on how to smile! Apparently many Japanese are workaholics, and have forgotten the simple things in life. Indians are no different. To encourage people – especially the What’sApp and Facebook generation – to emerge from their virtual worlds and learn the true meaning of joy, the two-day Edufest will have a number of activities and sessions revolving around the idea of happiness. We are thankful to each one of you for your personal contribution and support to make Edufest 2016 a great success. ‘Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling’ Happy reading

From the President’s Desk I am honoured to present the seventh edition of ‘Empowering Lives’ - the Souvenir publication of the Udaan Welfare Foundation. Our objective through the publication of this Souvenir is to continue to spread awareness and arouse interest in the activities of Udaan leading to more active participation from supporters and well-wishers. We continue to concentrate on 4 key areas where we feel we can best serve the community through our carefully-designed and customized projects. The areas of Education, Health, Nutrition & Wellness; Welfare and Environment continue to be our focus as we endeavour to empower the lives of Children, Women and Senior Citizens who are the primary beneficiaries of our efforts. Our members and volunteers continue to work with dedication and enthusiasm to ensure the successful execution of our flagship projects and major initiatives. The awareness regarding Udaan has increased due to our growing presence on social media and has helped us gather more patrons, volunteers and benefactors. We are pleased to announce that our labours for the past year towards an extremely important milestone for us have finally borne fruit. We have successfully launched one of our dream projects – the Saksham Community Centre at Azadnagar, Thane. This spacious facility is now the hub of our activities and has helped us reach out to the surrounding community and provide much required support at the grassroots level. Multifaceted and multifunctional, Saksham has the potential to be a role model for how a community centre should operate, and has already achieved significant success in catering to the physical health, nutrition, education and skills training for the underprivileged. Over 620 community members have taken advantage of the medical facilities at Saksham which provides ongoing health services in the form of consultation clinics, in the departments of Gynaecology, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Orthopaedics, Homeopathy etc. with visiting doctors. Multiple Health and Dental Checkup Camps have already been conducted at the centre and we are making efforts to conduct Dental Camps for 2000 children in a neighbouring school. Food grain donation programs have been conducted for more than 1000 families from the neighbourhood. On the educational front, we are focusing on creating a strong foundation for children by introducing subjects like Maths, Science and English with relatable teaching techniques. Along with facilities like a library and board games, learning of yoga and exercises is another important part of the initiative. We have also conducted sessions on health awareness, malnutrition, personal hygiene, Origami, karate and Personality Development. Our second state-of-the-art computer lab has been set up to help the underprivileged keep pace with technology at our Saksham Community Centre. Our long-term goal focuses on providing vocational education to increase employability skills amongst women and young girls. In addition to this, child-counselling and environmental education programs will also be implemented where psychological issues of women and children and the importance of the environment will be taught. Skill training in the form of Tailoring is being provided for women and several have benefitted. A Dental Assistant’s training program is also being planned. At a broad level, we have ensured that our Community Centre goals are aligned with the larger vision of the country. Udaan Edufest 2016, titled ‘Udaan Khushiyon Ki’ is being conducted at our Community Centre. Happiness is a state of mind which can be consciously developed, regardless of external circumstances. We intend to teach children to stay happy even when faced with the numerous challenges of life. In the end, happiness is not the absence of problems, but simply the ability to deal with them well. We also wish to instil in them an attitude of gratitude, to look at things in a positive way, to realize and be thankful for their blessings - because success may not lead to happiness, but happiness definitely leads to success. The Udaan Edufest-2014, titled ‘Udaan Naari Shakti Ki’ was memorably successful with active participation from over 260 girls from 10th to 12th Standard from various children’s homes across Maharashtra, Gujarat and Daman. Udaan Edufest 2014 was focussed on the theme of “Self-defence” and was conducted on 8th and 9th November, 2014. The children were conditioned with a single-minded focus on building mental strength to face any untoward incident as well as being physically 3

fit to ward off such situations. Our experts were in full form and they gave away valuable tips and training to build up courage, remove inhibitions and fear. The presentation at the end of the session by the participants showed our endeavour to be highly successful. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable circumstances, we could not conduct Udaan Edufest 2015. Our various flagship projects continue to run successfully due to the efforts of our benefactors and volunteers. The “Technology Centre” continues to give children essential knowledge of computers. Kudos to the Teachers and the Administrator for doing a great job. The PSR Education Fund supporting the education of 69 children at Anugraha Vidya Mandir continues to run smoothly. My sincere thanks to the Editors - Dr. Prabodh Halde, Mr Nandu Aiyer, Mr Nikhil Menon and Dr. Anuja Luniya for bringing out this well designed Souvenir. For the first time we are also launching an Electronic – version of the Souvenir to increase our reach to a larger audience. I hope this will be liked by all. My heartfelt thanks to all the members and advertisers for their generous contributions, without which it would not have been possible to reach another milestone. I also thank Mr. Sandeep Ramakrishnan and his team from Consumer Links, Mr Devendra Yadav from Bajaj Electricals for designing, art works and Mr. Anand Chhatre and his team from VSTS Corporation for printing this Souvenir well in time. We offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to Shri Nitin Gadkari - Hon’ble Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Shri Devendra Fadnavis - Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri A. T. Nana Patil - Hon’ble Member of Parliament; Mr Kumar Anurag Pratap, CSR Leader, Capgemini India Ltd., Mr. Adarsh Nayyar, Sr. Consultant and Head CSR & QMS at Galaxy Surfactants Limited, for their words of support and encouragement towards the successful conduct of our activities. We wish to put on record our sincere gratitude to all the children and Rev. Sisters of Ma Niketan Society and all Sisters across Helpers of Mary for their valued support and guidance. Our sincere appreciation for all Patrons, Sponsors and Donors, and volunteers who have directly or indirectly supported Udaan Welfare Foundation and its projects, throughout the period of its existence. We wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude to the Faculty of Edufest 2016 for having spared their valuable time and energies to share their expertise and help equip the children with the skills and self-confidence required to tackle the challenges in today’s world. I am happy to be associated with Udaan Welfare Foundation over the years and am delighted to see them go from strength to strength in their mission to serve the society. As always, the theme for ‘Edufest’ is carefully thought-out and this year’s theme ‘Udaan Khushiyon Ki’ addresses the need to help children become strong, confident characters who can tackle future trials and tribulations with aplomb. Udaan is to be commended for taking up this initiative to inculcate an attitude of positivity and optimism in our children and building a culture of confidence and enthusiasm. Please continue with your praiseworthy mission to ‘empower lives’ and I hope to see more of such exemplary initiatives from Udaan Welfare Foundation.

Message from Mr. Harsh Mariwala

Harsh Mariwala Chairman

I would like to congratulate The Udaan Welfare Foundation on successfully completing nine years of selfless service to society. I would also like to commend the Udaan Edufest, which has become a one-of-its-kind event combining education and entertainment for underprivileged girl students. Since its inception in 2007, Udaan has created an impressive body of work. The sheer number of projects that it has executed demonstrate its unflagging commitment towards a healthier, better educated and more sustainable society. Yet another admirable initiative is the launch of Saksham, Udaan’s community centre this year. I am sure the centre will help galvanise the local community to come, learn and grow together. I wish Udaan and its team all the best in their endeavours.

Udaan Edufest – nine years and going strong Udaan Edufest 2008 was another feather in the cap, as this time, the event saw 10 different children’s homes participating with over 170 children. The theme for this year was ‘Communication Skills’, and with all-out support from members and faculty, the programme was a huge success. Most of the children benefited tremendously from the outdoor activities which boosted their morale, confidence and courage.

The Udaan Edufest has come a long way since its inception in 2007, and is now recognised as a prestigious project that is synonymous with empowering young women through innovative and interactive learning initiatives. This mini education extravaganza takes place every year in the month of October/November at the warm and delightful Ma Niketan Home in Thane. This year, however, the venue shifts to our very own Saksham Community Centre at Thane’s Azad Nagar.

‘Path to Excellence’ was selected as the theme for Edufest 2009. This theme was deliberately chosen so that we could educate the children about the importance of Internal Excellence in terms of their inherent qualities, strengths and positivity as well as factors which cause fear, shyness and anger. Alongside, the instructors also conducted an experiential learning session on External Excellence, teaching the children how to dream, set objectives, inspire and motivate themselves, and finally, how to set goals and achieve them.

The Udaan Welfare Foundation has always endorsed the concept of education for all, especially the girl child. This is because we believe that every child has the capability to do great things in his or her life. The privileged classes are blessed with several options to bring up their children in the best way possible. They send their wards to renowned institutions to learn different personality development and life skills, and pay hefty fees that lesser-fortunate sections of society cannot afford.

Titled ‘Youngistan ki Udaan’, Edufest 2010 was unique in many different ways. This time around, the idea was to help children recognise their hidden genius and sort themselves into different ‘Genius Groups’. All the participating children classified themselves into different categories according to their respective strengths. Subsequently, they attended three sessions, titled “Hum Sab Genius Hain”, “Lakshya”, and “Hum Honge Kamiyab”. The children also enjoyed a host of other activities, which helped enrich their experience over the two days of the event. This time, the event witnessed an even better turn-out of 200 girls, with Homes based in Maharashtra and the neighbouring state of Gujarat participating.

When Udaan recognised the opportunity in making such benefits available to the children in children’s homes, we were determined to fill this gap and bring about a positive transformation in the lives of such children. Initially, our objective was to take small but firm steps. We believed that if our efforts brought about a positive change in the lives of even a few children and helped them live productive and sustainable lives, we would have achieved our mission. So with this modest goal in mind, Udaan’s themed Edufest (‘Team Building’) made a very subtle start in the year 2007. The Edufest was envisioned as a platform that empowers ambitious young women and girls who have a zeal to grow, but who aren’t as privileged as the rest of us. Starting with just three members during the planning stages of the event’s very first edition, the campaign managed to win over almost 41 volunteers and a team of nearly 15 faculty members by the time the event was executed. The team members devoted their time, skills and efforts just to see the smiles light up the children’s faces, and this, in itself, resulted in a package of beautiful moments and memories. It was exhilarating to see how much the volunteers, organisers - and of course the children - enjoyed and appreciated the event. The enjoyment of imparting education through experiential training was truly a memorable one for all.

The theme for Edufest 2011 was ‘Youngistan Ki Udaan – Part 2’, a logical successor to the 2010 theme, which focused on channelising children’s perspectives on the genius within themselves and the importance of having a personal vision. After this exercise, it was important to prepare them to face the challenges of impending adulthood. ‘Parivartan – Kali se Phool’ was a session dealing with the transition of young girls into women, addressing issues such as coping with physical changes, interaction with the opposite gender, preventing child abuse, managing relationships, cultivating the right values, and setting worthwhile goals to pursue. The session ‘Rupiyon Ki Samajh’ highlighted the importance of money in today’s world by addressing concepts like the value of money, proper budgeting, saving, banking, fixed deposits, evils of moneylending, investment, and microfinance. ‘Udhyami aur Swatantrata’ dealt with the concept of independent thinking and entrepreneurship. ‘Nari Neta’ was designed to unlock the girls’ self-development and leadership traits. Physical and mental fitness was propagated through exercise, yoga and positive visualisation. ‘Learning science through fun’ was a fun-filled exercise designed to provoke interest in learning science. All the modules were thoughtfully designed after extensive research to ensure that the children could easily comprehend the vital life-lessons being taught.

Our experience of working with children over the years gave us a lot of insight into the needs and aspirations of the children. Therefore, since inception, the concept and design of each annual Edufest programme is different from the previous ones, since we strive to incorporate new ideas based on what we’ve learnt from our past experiences. The highlight of our first Edufest in 2007 was, undoubtedly, the selection of the Best Performers (Miss Udaan). Miss Udaan was chosen from among the 150 orphan and destitute children who participated from eight different homes in Mumbai and Thane. With the whole-hearted support of our volunteers and the staff of Ma Niketan, the event went on to be a great success.

The Udaan Edufest 2012, ‘Udaan Aashaon Ki’, was a 11

thunderous success, with participation from over 240 children. The focus this year was on career guidance, and we are happy that ‘Udaan Aashaon Ki’ took the children to a world of many new possibilities and career vistas. The concept aimed to channelise the children’s interests towards different careers based upon the Multiple Intelligences Theory, the foundation for which had been laid through the themes of the previous Edufests held in 2010 and 2011. We brought in 85 instructors from different professions and areas of expertise, and attempted to give the children an understanding of different vocations and get guidance through interactive sessions. The entertainment programme saw a team of Dress Changers from Ukraine and Russia enthrall the children through a dramatic international live performance on stage. We also facilitated an orchestra of visually disabled artistes to perform for the children. This further emphasised the thought ‘Nothing is Impossible’.

Edufest 2014 had the theme ‘Udaan Naari Shakti Ki’. The reason for this theme was the need to increase the awareness among girl children about the growing incidents of violence against women. We also intended to equip them with techniques and training to make them self-confident and capable of dealing with untoward situations. In this very dynamic edition of Edufest, the children were taught the basics of self-defense and martial arts through practical demonstrations and training. Various outdoor activities such as rappelling, tree-climbing and archery were conducted to bring in an orientation towards adventure and to make the children fearless. The children were counselled about how to conduct themselves in society and a panel discussion was held to highlight various issues and aspects of child abuse, and the options available to protect the children. The theme for Edufest 2016 is Happiness, and the event is titled ‘Udaan Khushiyon Ki’. We will encourage the children to develop positive traits such as optimism and resilience, to always see the bright side of things, and to make the best out of every situation. Udaan’s Edufest has experienced success year after year, witnessing extremely encouraging participation both in terms of volunteers as well as children. These bright and talented children anxiously await their chance to participate in the Edufest. Their anticipation levels are so high, that they often begin preparing for the event three months in advance! And when the day finally dawns, the glow on their faces tells of their eagerness to take on the various intellectuallystimulating experiences over the next two days. True to its vision, Edufest has brought about a tremendous positive transformation in the lives of the children who’ve been a part of the event. It has helped them increase their overall confidence and self-esteem levels, and also inspired some of the children to pursue higher education from some of India’s best-known universities. For example, one particular girl, who had always struggled academically, found her confidence and strength through Edufest and positively willed her way through the SSC and HSC examinations. Today she is gainfully employed, and is confident of studying further using her own hard-earned money. We have been very fortunate to have had access to the best faculty and trainers. These individuals have enthusiastically devoted their valuable time and skills to spend time with the children and guide them towards living wholesome lives. We feel proud that the united efforts of our members, volunteers and benefactors (in short, the Udaan family) has helped to create a positive difference in the lives of the children; and this motivates us to carry Edufest forward. The Udaan Edufest is an excellent experiential event that is steadily succeeding in its pursuit of bringing smiles and cheers in the lives of children. These little minds cherish each experience and return home with a treasure-chest of happy moments. We trust that future editions of the Edufest will produce even better results and impact the lives of many more children. We hope you will join in and support us in our effort to spread a little joy in the world around us.

‘Udaan, Hari Bhari Zindagi Ki’, the theme of Edufest 2013, was aimed at building sensitivity and responsibility towards the environment among young girls, and at exposing them to the various perspectives and possibilities for careers in conservation. Udaan brought in various experts dealing in different aspects of environment conservation such as environmental sustainability, waste-water recycling, rainwater harvesting, renewable energy, solid waste management, etc. These experts, through knowledgesharing sessions and hands-on activities, provided the children with ‘live’ experiences of how we tend to waste many of nature’s precious gifts, and how every individual can, in their own way, contribute to the conservation of the environment by reducing, recycling and reusing. Padmashree Dr. Sharad Kale showed the children a plant preserved for 14 years with the unique technique of ‘Akshaya Vasundhara’. Mr. Anil Ranglani from Daily Dump educated the children about waste management. The children had a lot of fun segregating green waste from dry waste. A ‘Game Changers’ panel discussion was organised to honour ‘green heroes’ who are the change-makers of our generation. The panel included eminent personalities like Rajendra Bhat, D. S. Banavali, Prof. Walawalkar, Jismon George, Dr. Lata Ghanshamnani, Prof. (Dr.) Neelima Kulkarni from Hariyali, Umesh Rathore from YUPS, and Ajay Kale. The panel members threw light on topics related to the conservation of water, environment, the use of solar energy and various methods that can be adopted for a greener future. As part of the ‘Green Celebrations’ event, the children of Ma Niketan put together skits about celebrating festivals in an eco-friendly way. The children then went through a hands-on demonstration of inorganic waste management by means of urban farming. To continue with the tradition of mixing entertainment with education, a variety of dances was performed by Dr. Roopali Deshpande and her team. The dances were themed so as to present all the wonders of the environment and demonstrate how the basic elements co-exist in perfect harmony with nature. Edufest 2013 officially ended with a variety entertainment programme, which included a Senior Citizens’ Orchestra, where experienced musicians took the stage and entertained the children with magical renditions of popular film songs and devotional numbers.

Edufest 2016: Udaan Khushiyon Ki Mr. Kanamori, homeroom teacher of a 4th grade class in Japan, teaches his wards not only how to become better students, but also how to live and be “happy”. He gives them lessons on teamwork, community, the importance of openness, how to cope, and the harm caused by bullying.

happiness through a brief experience with yoga and simple meditation techniques. After practicing yoga, the children will be exposed to dance through a very young exponent of classical dance, in a fun and enjoyable way. They then move on to the concept of positive thinking and witness examples of resilience in some of the toughest situations that life can throw. This will be followed by interactive sessions on how happiness happens, which will touch upon practical tips for happiness through affirmations, discipline, persistence (i.e. a never-give-up attitude), selfbelief, goal orientation, communication, and emotion and stress management.

In the award-winning documentary Children Full of Life (watch http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/children-full-oflife), a fourth-grade class in a primary school in Kanazawa, northwest of Tokyo, learns lessons about compassion

Helpful tips and insights will be provided for attaining happiness through building relationships, working together in teams, and caring and giving to others. Laughter is the best medicine, and the 90-minute session on deriving happiness through laughter is sure to be one of the most enjoyable moments of this year’s Edufest for all the children. The first day of the event will be crowned by a glittering interactive music session and a session on developing the ability to pursue happiness through connecting souls. The second day will begin with an experiential session on ‘Happiness through Prayer and Spirituality’. Physical fitness is the focus of the next session, since to be happy, it is important to be healthy first. The children will go through some fitness and movement regimens that they can pursue for life. The final day will continue the pursuit of happiness through pottery, arts & crafts and much more.

and true happiness from their homeroom teacher, Toshiro Kanamori. He instructs each student to write down their true inner feelings in a letter, and read it aloud in front of the class. By sharing their lives, the children begin to realise the importance of caring for their classmates. Toshiro is an amazing example of what teachers across the world should be like. He truly understands what teaching children is all about, and has made a positive difference in the lives of countless 10-year olds.

A renowned Master Chef will then tickle participants’ bellies with an interactive session on food and how we can achieve happiness through food. A renowned theatre and Marathi film personality (an Udaan member) will inspire them to pursue happiness through theatre and stage performances.

Edufest 2016’s theme of “Happiness” is inspired by teachers like Kanamori. Our effort, over the event’s two days, is to visit the common theme of “Being Happy” by looking within, and not without, through different lenses.

At the concluding session, which will include a feedback and feed-forward session with the children, a firebrand speaker will help the children understand the takeaways of the two-day event and how they can benefit in the long run by achieving internal happiness.

We have organised this thematic event keeping in mind the 9-year tradition of our annual Edutainment festival for underprivileged children. In November 2016, “Udaan’s Edufest : Udaan Khushiyon Ki” will be organised at our new multi-purpose Community Centre –‘Saksham’ at Azad Nagar on Kolshet Road in Thane – which is dedicated to the service of the local community within a 5-kilometre radius.

We are trying to help the children to pursue true happiness over these two days. We invite you to join us in building an ecosystem of happiness for them and also to take back some lessons ourselves.

As part of the theme, we have invited experts in various areas to animate the sessions with children and help them connect with themselves through different dimensions, both internal and external. We are hoping to handhold approximately 100odd children from underprivileged backgrounds through a host of experiences.

Therefore, please do visit Saksham on 5th and 6th November between 9 am and 6 pm and learn the art of happiness. Get associated with Udaan’s various activities in your area of interest at Saksham, give up your stress and anxieties, and learn how to pursue the path of internal and external bliss.

To start with, on the first day, the children will understand what true happiness is as a concept. They will learn to look at

Udaan dared to dream and realised it. The seed of a project sown in 2011 has gradually evolved into a new project ‘Saksham Community Centre’, in the centre of the slums in 2015. Our journey onwards entails more responsibilities, dedication, devotion and commitment to maintain the highest standards to make ‘Saksham Community Centre’ a centre of excellence. The dream project was conceptualised while participating in an international competition for the welfare of girls and women in 2012. We planned for good oral care, nutrition, anaemia correction, health awareness campaigns for the girls and chose a girls’ college for setting up this project. However, we were fortunate to get an unused 2100sq.ft. warehouse at Azad Nagar, Thane. With the help of members and volunteers, we planned the complete layout and with professional work done by committed contractors, we turned our dream into a concrete reality. Activities conducted at Saksham Community Centre (August 2015 - September 2016) Regular Health Services made available in the field of General Practice, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Dentistry, Medicine, Eye, Paediatric and Homeopathy.

Udaan Welfare Foundation – the happy journey continues… Some of Udaan’s projects in different areas are as follows:

Profile: The Udaan Welfare Foundation is a Thanebased non-profit organisation engaged in addressing the challenges of vulnerable populations in and around the city. With programmes focussed on 4 areas – Education; Health, Nutrition & Wellness; Welfare; and the Environment - the Udaan Welfare Foundation empowers children, women and senior citizens from underprivileged backgrounds to lead more meaningful lives. Mission: To provide timely and meaningful support to needy children, women and senior citizens by effectively implementing projects in the areas of health, education and nutrition that have a sustainable, cost-effective, and positive impact on society and the environment Vision: Giving wing to the hopes and aspirations of the underprivileged and empowering them for a better tomorrow History: The year 2007 saw a small group of like-minded people coming together to ameliorate the condition of orphans, women, and senior citizens. To begin with, this tiny association took up projects at established children’s homes like Ma Niketan (Thane), Naya Jivan (Asangaon), and Anugraha Children’s Home (Ambernath). Over time, having gained vital exposure and experience in organising different programmes and projects, the group’s activities continued to grow, and subsequently, the Udaan Welfare Foundation came into existence. The Udaan Welfare Foundation was registered on October 20, 2008, under the Societies Act 1860. Its Registered Office is located at 4, Savitha, 70 Pestom Sagar, Main Road No. 2, Chembur, Mumbai, 400089, and bears the registration number - Maharashtra Rajya Mumbai 200 G.B.B.S.D 2188. The Trust’s registration number is F-36482 (MUM).

Immunisation: We conducted several immunisation programmes in 2007-2008; principally the immunisation of 700 children from Ma Niketan (Thane), and Naya Jivan (Asangaon) between December 2007 and July 2008. We administered six vaccines - MMR, DPT, DT, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus. In 2010, we immunised over 220 children from Anugrah Vidya Mandir and Anugrah Children’s Home (Ambernath) for Hepatitis B. ii. Health Check-up Camps: a. A successful Mega Health Check-up camp was organised for 330 children of Ma Niketan in July 2008. Accurate records were compiled and properly maintained, and post-camp analysis was done. Suitable remedial advice regarding medicines and investigations was also given. b. A health check-up camp was organised for 40 villagers, including 24 children, of Phansipada Village (Ambernath) in April 2008. A team of paediatricians, nutritionists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists and physicians examined the villagers, and found that most of the children were malnourished. Appropriate advice, medicines and counselling were given to all the villagers to help them improve their health and quality of life. c. A health check-up camp was organised at Anugrah Vidya Mandir, a school for poor children, on January 10, 2010. About 100 children were examined, and appropriate diagnoses and remedial counselling were provided. d. Anaemia Detection Camps: 1. Anaemia detection camps were organised at Ma Niketan for 330 girls in April 2009, and corrective measures were undertaken with special emphasis on an iron-enriched diet. 2. A follow-up camp 2 months later showed satisfactory results in most of the children. 3. An anaemia detection camp was organised at Sri Ram Vidya Mandir (Thane) in March 2013 for school children and their mothers. Overall, 246 children were tested and appropriate iron tablets/syrups were dispensed. This project was supported by Biosense, Serco Intelenet, Dana Pharmaceuticals, and Menghi Alias Kikiben C Lalvani Public Charitable Trust. 4. Another camp was conducted on October 5, 2013 for 97 children and teachers of Harkishan English Public School (Thane). Appropriate medicines were distributed to anaemic women and children. e. Dental Health Check-up Camp: This camp was organised for 250 students of Harkishan English Public School (Thane) from January 21 to February 5, 2014. The camp was conducted by Dr. Karuna

Operational Model: The organisation was built with the following operating aims: 1) Commitment to sustainability 2) Respect for all stakeholders involved 3) A transparent and democratic approach to decisionmaking 4) Shared responsibility and credit 5) Respect for gender equality and social diversity Udaan’s Executive Committee meets every month. At these meetings, the executive committee members discuss their current and completed projects, financial transactions of the previous month, and other operational nitty-gritties, with the minutes being recorded and approved in the subsequent meetings. The organisation has project leaders for different projects, with proactive participation from the members, and now looks forward to more members coming forward to take up projects and lead them successfully. It is the Foundation’s conviction that the more members participate, the greater will be the benefit to society. Eight years into its journey, Udaan has achieved a number of milestones and continues to grow steadily and confidently. Udaan’s projects are achieving better acceptance, and it plans to take up more sustainable projects in the near future. 18

Education A. CHILDREN i. Udaan Edufests: Over the last seven years, Udaan has successfully conducted annual ‘Edufests’ that have benefited over 1200 children to date. The majority of these children were Std.10 students who attended these Edufests regularly till the completion of their Std.12 exams. Further, the number of participating homes as well as participating children has steadily grown. In recent years, the Edufests boasts attendance from various regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Daman & Diu. More details of this project are described in the next few pages. ii. Dr. PSR Education Fund: Another feather in our cap is the Dr. PSR Education Fund, which we instituted in memory of one of Udaan’s senior-most and most accomplished members. An inspiration for one and all, Dr. P S Ramanathan, who passed away at 78, was a passionate advocate for education. He used his vast knowledge to teach many children in his lifetime. Carrying his legacy forward, Udaan provides scholarships in his name for several children at Anugrah Vidya Mandir. The education of these children is sponsored until they leave the institution, or up to Standard 10. We initially started by supporting the schooling of 5 children in 2008, and increased this number to 56 students in 2009. Since 2009-10, the PSR Education Fund has supported around 70 children, at a cost of Rs. 4,000 per child per annum. Overwhelming support for this 21

initiative is seen amongst the donors. While a few have sponsored multiple children, others sponsor a single child for multiple years in advance. A proper database is compiled to monitor the children’s performances, attendance and health status and the sponsors are also kept informed about the status of the child being sponsored. This feedback has given a lot of satisfaction and confidence to the donors, and has motivated them to continue their support. Udaan continues to collect funds under the Dr.PSR Education Fund so that we can support an even greater number of children. Another priority is to encourage and support good teachers by sponsoring their salaries, which could be even more beneficial. We also intend to support child education through teacher sponsorship in and around the slums near Saksham. iii. Udaan Day Care: Another flagship project, the Udaan Day Care Centre, was inaugurated on August 15, 2010 at Anugrah Seva Mandir Trust’s premises. The Centre serves children who are academically or economically weak, or who have two working parents. Udaan has analysed their condition and found ways to utilise the time of these children productively and guide them towards a more fruitful life. Funded by the Udaan Welfare Foundation and run by the Anugraha Seva Mandir Trust, the centre has grown from serving 60 children to 85 children. Five teachers were appointed, besides a sports teacher twice a week. The children were provided nutritious lunch and evening snacks (including fruits) every day. Remarkable improvements were witnessed in the performance of these children. Many of these children now converse in English and also access the library set up by Udaan for research projects. They also played games (outdoor as well as indoor) and learnt Taekwondo. The health of these children also improved due to the provision of healthy nutritious breakfast by Udaan. Due to structural changes and other administrative issues, the Day Care Centre has been put on hold since December 2013.

Udaan Vigyan Ki: One of Udaan’s flagship projects, this initiative started in August 2012, with the theme ‘Creating toys from trash’. The idea was to make learning science a handson and fun-filled experience. Udaan Vigyaan Ki was launched in two Thane schools – Harkishan English Medium School, and Sri Ram Vidya Mandir. About 60 children from each school from standards 5, 6, 7 and 8 participated in this programme on Saturdays. The Udaan Vigyan Ki project was also selected by twin sisters, Ms. Prachiti and Pranali Dalvi from Duke University, US, as their independent project under the University’s ‘Duke Engage Programme’. The two budding scientists visited India for two months in 2012 and enthusiastically prepared the blue print of the entire project. Udaan Vigyan Ki has benefited the participating children tremendously by building up their self-confidence, presentation and communication skills apart from improving their observation skills and creativity. On February 28, 2014, the children from Harkishan English Public School organised a Science Fair where innovative and educative science models and concepts were presented by children from Std. 6 through Std.10. seeing their grasp of key scientific concepts, we felt gratified that our Udaan Vigyan Ki project had made a successful impact.

vi. Library Project: The Udaan Welfare Foundation firmly believes that books are indispensable companions for developing minds. Knowledge, once imparted, can never be snatched away. Therefore, we have set up libraries and promoted reading in the following ways: a. Set up a library at Ma Niketan, with over 1500 books b. At the same event, Anugrah’s children’s library was updated with the addition of numerous fiction and non-fiction books. c. Since 2008 to date, textbooks and workbooks for Std. 1 through Std.9 have been procured from Trimurti School (Thane) through the efforts of Mrs. Varinder Kaur and Mr. Satwinder Singh Rainu. d. Under this project, Udaan donated over 1500 books to the library at the Udaan Day Care Centre. These books were collected in August 2010 from different schools like Lok Puram Public School and Trimurti English School (Thane). iv. Ma Niketan Technology Centre: With help from Capgemini India, Udaan was selected by SNS REAAL Bank, Netherlands, to set up a stateof-the-art Computer Centre including Internet and interactive digital teaching media, at Ma Niketan. The Udaan team has complete responsibility for this centre which provides technical education to over 330 underprivileged girl children. Started in March 2012, this centre has got children hooked on to computers now and has seen several changes in them. They are more disciplined and focused, and their attention spans and academic scores have increased. Many children have shown talent in using Microsoft Office products. Loaded with the latest original software, including Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 8, this centre boasts a dedicated team of staffers that guides the children. Another stateof-the-art technology centre at Saksham was set up in September 2015, with 15 terminals, 6 high-end servers, high speed internet, and a hub-and-spoke teaching facility. We intend to start career-related courses for the students soon.

Saksham: Hope has a new home Udaan’s brand-new Community Centre, Saksham, is engaged in nurturing hope in all its forms through various health, education and skill-building programmes. How Saksham is making a difference A year after its launch, Saksham has turned into a thriving, bubbling hub of activity that serves the community within a 5-kilometre radius. It showcases a model way for the community to live, share and grow. We are empowering people in the community by giving them access to better health facilities, and the chance to learn new skills, educate themselves, and become more employable. In a nutshell, we are creating more well-rounded citizens. Saksham’s services to the community are of two types: free or highly subsidised skill development, educational and awareness programmes, and highly subsidised health services. The first includes activities such as tailoring classes for women, karate classes, arts and crafts workshops for children, etc. Saksham also offers classroom teaching sessions in subjects like math, science, English and computers, among others. It has set up a state of the art Science laboratory for experiments from Std. III to X of all Education Boards. It also has a fully-functional library stacked with books for children to read. There are also regular activities aimed at building awareness on things like hand hygiene, the importance of education, environmental awareness, and nutrition. To address the problem of rising - and often prohibitively expensive - healthcare costs, Saksham provides highlysubsidised health services in the form of consultation clinics, in the departments of Dentistry, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, General Practice, Homeopathy, and others. Visiting doctors from well-known hospitals regularly come to these clinics and interact with patients from the local community. In addition to the above, Udaan uses Saksham as a base for other activities such as donation drives, fun activities, celebrations and community outreach initiatives.

Few things gave us as much joy and satisfaction last year as the launch of Saksham, Udaan’s Thane-based Community Centre. Saksham threw open its gates to the local community in September 2015, and within a very short time, it has become the focal point of Udaan’s communitybuilding activities. Saksham’s launch was a watershed moment in the history of the Udaan Welfare Foundation. It represented the realisation of our efforts and dreams over the past eight years. What’s more, it also gives us much pride, as we have succeeded in building a hyperlocal community service model that - we believe - can be the gold standard for similar other Centres. We have heard of the term ‘hyperlocal’ before in the context of e-commerce startups. With Saksham (the Hindi word for “capable”), Udaan has ‘started up’ a multifunctional, multi-faceted facility that organises and monitors a diverse set of health, education and skill-building activities for economically underprivileged women, children and families residing within a 5-kilometre radius of the Centre. Saksham is a grassroots revolution that is compassionately empowering people, without losing sight of commercial viability and self-sustainability. Before introducing the Saksham model, let’s take a look at how it all began. The launch of Saksham Saksham was conceptualised by the Udaan Welfare Foundation in 2013 while participating in an international competition, ‘Project Inspire’, for the welfare of girls and women. The Udaan team had planned a series of activities around oral care, nutrition, anaemia correction, and health awareness campaigns for girls. A large girls’ college in Mumbai was chosen as the location for this project. However, logistical challenges at both ends prevented the project from coming to fruition. Therefore, the team decided to go for a mobile multipurpose van. Here too, high installation and operational costs deterred them from venturing further. By now, the intention to carry on the project was so firmly planted in everyone’s minds that the team decided to build a brickand-mortar Community Centre of its own that would serve as Udaan’s operational headquarters. They eventually zeroed in on a disused 2100sq.ft. warehouse at Azad Nagar in Thane, and dedicated themselves towards transforming it into a community centre with extensive help from Udaan’s members, volunteers and professional consultants. One key change was the addition of a mezzanine floor, which increased the available space to 2700sq.ft. In a short period of time, Saksham-the dream became Saksham, a concrete reality. In one swoop, the Centre solved many challenges faced by Udaan in the past, primarily the need for an operational base where activities could be conducted and monitored, and which would serve as a venue for larger-scale and more socially relevant programmes in the areas of physical health, nutrition, education and skills training for the underprivileged children, women and senior citizens.

Impact-oriented approach In its first year, Saksham received a gratifying response from the community. Over 600 people availed of the medical facilities at Saksham, with the dental camps getting the bulk of the visits (over 500) as on September 2016. As patients develop trust and faith in Saksham’s work, we expect these numbers to dramatically grow over the coming years. Here are some other feats that Saksham has achieved in its first year: - 7 free health camps for women, children and senior citizens - 5 awareness camps on topics like hygiene, environment, health, skills, self-defence, etc. - Grain (rice, dal & jaggery) donation to over 1000 families - 2016 Summer Camp: 85 children participated - 2015 Christmas Celebrations: 60 children participated - Community Survey of 470 people to match our services with their challenges/needs - Several volunteers coming forward to support our cause The Udaan team firmly believes that the scale of our 28

activities will grow manifold in the near future. We take heart in the fact that our work is in line with the vision articulated by India’s central government. Through its various activities, Saksham is providing grassroots support to initiatives and campaigns such as Skill India, safe motherhood, women’s safety, yoga and wellness, Digital India, environmental preservation, and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

Computer Education: Digital literacy, computer education • Education: Math (basic), General Knowledge, Udaan Vigyan Ki – Fun with Science, English skills, reading library – vernacular and simple English • Environment: Environmental awareness/education • Employability: Tailoring classes • Child counselling: Psychological care sessions • Fun activities: Indoor games • Fine Arts: Dance, drawing, arts & crafts • Focused workshops/facilitator-led learnings: Exercise, yoga, self-defense, origami, summer camps, self-confidence and personality development In addition, the Centre will continue being a hub for all cultural activities, festivals and celebrations that are relevant to the community at large. Building the Community Centre has been the realisation of a long-held dream for the Udaan Welfare Foundation. While a good beginning has been made, the aim now is to use Saksham to its full potential to serve local stakeholders, and to set an example for other grassroots movements like ours. If you would like to visit Saksham, you are welcome to drop in (between 10am-6pm on weekdays) at: Saksham Community Centre, Gala No. 1, Near Indofil Industries, Kolshet Road, Azad Nagar, Near Brahmand, Thane (West) – 400607, Maharashtra.

The next steps In the months and years to come, the Saksham Community Centre will continue giving local residents access to important information and services, and will work to build a sense of ownership in them. We have all heard the old saying: ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’. Saksham embodies that same approach towards building a healthier, stronger, fulfilled and productive community. The underprivileged do not need charity or sympathy – they need dignity and support until such time that they can stand on their own feet. To achieve this ideal, Saksham will need to become more than a Community Centre. We aspire to turn Saksham into a Centre of Excellence in the following fields. • Health Services: General Practice, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Dentistry, Medicine, Eye Care, Paediatrics, and Homeopathy. • Nutrition: Nutritional assessment, nutritional guidance & monitoring, anaemia monitoring & correction. • Awareness-Building: Oral health, personal hygiene, hand hygiene, infectious diseases

Technology Centre at Ma Niketan

Udaan has strongly believed in the concept of Digital India as the route to empowerment of the underprivileged long before it became a central focus for the Government of India. Today, given the National focus on Digital India, it is becoming even more focused.

Technology Centre at Saksham Community Centre

With this invaluable experience, we have since September 2015, set up a state of the art Technology Centre with high end servers, Laptops, Projector and high speed internet for the underprivileged community at Saksham – Our community centre, with the vision of empowering communities and also using this centre as the virtual hub to train other communities through a hub and spoke model and enabling digital learning through dedicated faculty from this centre.

Udaan commenced its first Technology Centre at Ma Niketan – A Children’s Home (in Thane) transforming a barren building space used to store unutilized material to a state of the art Technology centre in 2012 which got converted to a fully air conditioned 750 square feet with a top end server, 30 Thin Client based terminals, projector, panaboard with committed teachers and customized initiatives which worked around increasing awareness, removing fear of technology, creating interest, skilling the children on the use of technology for various purposes and working on co-creating jobs for the older children through skill enhancement. Over the last nearly five years of its service, the centre has served a minimum of 120 children (orphan & lesser privileged girls) daily in various age groups (4 years

We need your support to make this vision a reality. You can contribute financially / volunteering time to teach / enabling us with state of the art equipment in the dynamic digital space / setting up small group of beneficiaries in your community who can be trained from this centre digitally. Be happier with 7 minutes of yoga daily By Dana Santas

Devoted yogis will tell you that yoga is not only the path to enlightenment but also happiness. Numerous studies support this claim, pointing to yoga as a general practice for quelling stress, easing anxiety and elevating the mood.

system, which shuts down the stress response by lowering cortisol (stress hormone), blood pressure and heart rate while increasing oxytocin and endorphins (happy hormones). Establish diaphragmatic breathing Diaphragmatic breathing uses the expansion and contraction of your diaphragm to take long, deep breaths. To stimulate diaphragmatic breathing, inhale deeply for a five count into the lowest lobes of your lungs, focusing on expansion of your lower ribs while avoiding any arching in your midback. Then exhale for a five-or-greater count to completely empty your lungs. Continue breathing this way for at least 90 seconds. Practice present-moment awareness While breathing diaphragmatically, focus all your attention on the sounds and sensation of your breath. Notice the expansion and contraction of your rib cage. Follow the full path of air in through your nose, down your throat, through your lungs and back again. If your mind wanders, bring it back to your breathing. Be a warrior, not a worrier A 2010 Harvard Study on “power posing” showed that holding open-body postures for two minutes decreases cortisol and increases testosterone, a confidence-boosting hormone, for less anxiety and more self-assuredness. Because of this, the first two yoga poses in my happiness sequence, Warrior one and two, fit the bill by maintaining an open body without slumping or crossing the limbs. Holding these poses for five breaths on each side takes about two minutes total. Spending just 30 seconds challenging your balance with the third pose, Warrior Three, refocuses your mind in the present moment.

Although there’s no scientific analysis of whether particular yoga poses make us happy, research shows that certain body posturing, respiration and thinking positively influence our physiology. When we feel any emotion at all — happiness, unhappiness, anger, etc. — we experience specific hormonal reactions that feed each feeling and prompt unique mental and physical manifestations, such as smiling when happy, crying when sad or crossing our arms when angry or defensive.

Warrior one From standing, step back into a lunge but drop your back heel and point your toes out 45 degrees. Keep your back leg straight with your forward knee flexed above your ankle. Lift your arms overhead, shoulder-distance apart. Hold for five long, deep breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Science has shown that we can effectively, and quite quickly, reverse the emotion-to-body-response process by leveraging our physical and mental states to alter our emotional state. For instance, even forced smiling in stressful situations immediately lessens your stress response and elicits happy hormone production. As such, my yoga for happiness sequence is based on poses, breathing and meditation proven to boost feel-good physiology within minutes.

Warrior two Step your right leg back, as though you are coming into a lunge position, but drop the right heel and point the toes out to almost 90 degrees. Keep your right leg straight with your left knee bent to align above your ankle. With your shoulders aligned above your hips, reach your right arm back and left arm forward with your palms down. Look past your front hand and take five long, deep breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Because everyone wants to be happy, I’ve been using this yoga practice myself and with clients for years; so, I can happily attest to its benefits. Breathe in the present moment According to a 2010 Harvard study, people spend 47% of their time worrying about things that aren’t happening ... and, understandably, are less happy because of it. By focusing on your breathing during yoga, you keep your mind in the present moment on your current action.

Warrior three Shift your weight into your right leg and begin to take weight off your left leg. Exhale fully to drop your rib cage and have better access to core muscles to help stabilize you. When you feel steady, reach your arms forward and left leg back

Better still, in as little as 90 seconds of deep, diaphragmatic breathing, you can initiate your parasympathetic nervous 49

along a horizontal line. Try to hold it for two or three breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Let your arms rest at your sides. Raising your legs up above your heart promotes venous blood flow to improve circulation and reduce swelling. Changing your relationship with gravity also takes noticeable physical stress off your body.

Relax and remember, happily If you want to be happy, taking a few minutes to relax and focus on happiness is essential. A 2012 study showed that practicing an intentional “relaxation intervention” not only reduces the perception of stress but also facilitates wound healing. Talk about feeling better. That’s why I close out the seven-minute practice with two minutes of relaxation.

Happy-memory meditation Pick a happy memory, close your eyes, turn up the corners of your mouth (yes, smile) and meditate on a few-minute snippet of past happiness. The trick is to recreate the richness of the memory, using your five senses. What do you see? What can you hear? Where are your hands — do you feel anything? Are there any smells or tastes you can recall? After allowing your mind to focus in your happy memory for a few minutes, slowly open your eyes and relish the happy feelings that came with your memory.

While you’re relaxing, you can think your way to more happiness. Studies show that recalling a happy memory makes you happier. Too many people don’t meditate because they believe it requires a significant time commitment and the ability to clear your mind. But concentrating your attention on one happy memory actually serves as a simple and effective form of meditation. And adding a smile — even a fake one — will boost your propensity for happiness by mitigating stress and elevating mood.

Could yoga be your path to happiness? Science says, “Yes!” With only a seven-minute commitment for the chance to feel happier, why not give it a try?

Legs on a bolster or pillow Resting on your back, place your legs on a bolster or pillow.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev from the Isha Foundation looks at the source of joy, and why it is the first and most fundamental responsibility of every human being to be joyful. Happiness does not only come from achievement. When you were a child you were simply happy. That is your nature. If you go against your own nature to be happy, you will never get anywhere. To be happy is not the ultimate aspect of life. It is the fundamental aspect of life. If you are not happy, what else can you do with your life? Only if you are happy, can other great possibilities arise in your life. The first and most fundamental responsibility for a human being is to become a joyous being. It does not matter what you are pursuing in your life, whether it is business, power, education or service, you are doing so because somewhere deep inside you is a feeling that this will bring you happiness. Every single action that we perform on this planet springs from an aspiration to be happy because it is the original nature. Today we are seeking happiness so vigorously that the very life of the planet is being threatened. All those people, who depend on external situations to be happy, will never know true joy in their lives. The first and most fundamental responsibility for a human being is to become a joyous being. The source of joy is within you; you can take charge of it. When you are fundamentally joyous, when you do not have to do anything to be happy, then every dimension of your life – the way you perceive and express yourself and the world – will change. You will no longer have vested interests because whether you do something or you do not do something, whether you get something or do not get something, whether something happens or does not happen, you will be joyous by your nature. When you are joyous by your nature, your actions will rise to a completely different level. It is definitely time we look inward and see how to create personal wellbeing. From your own experience of life you can clearly see that true wellbeing will come to you only if your interiority changes. At present, the quality of your life is not determined by the clothes that you wear, the educational qualifications that you carry, the family background that you come from or the bank balances that you hold. Rather, the quality of your life depends upon how peaceful and joyous you are within yourself. Unless something of true value happens within you, you cannot do anything of tremendous value to the world. Whatever you do, it is only your inner quality that you are going to spread. Whether you like it or not, that is the reality. If you are concerned about the world, the first thing you must do is transform yourself into a joyous being. SSSSSS

Happiness through various religions (Dr. Prabodh Halde)

1. Introduction Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone.

perspectives? Answer to this question from Jain perspective is that the person who is free from passions is happy and healthy. Passions like attachment, delusion, anger, deceit, fear, grief, hatred etc. are the factors which are obstacles for not only the spiritual health but also harm the body and the mind. In praise of Bhagavana Mahavira, it is said

“Happiness depends upon ourselves” --- ARISTOTLE Happiness is simply an emotional state of feeling good, of being free from pain and unpleasant emotions.

Vapureva tavacae, bhagavan! vitaragata Na hi kotarasa sathegnau, tarurbhavati sadvalah. [2]

Unfortunately, happiness is an elusive state of mind that all men/Women strive for but few attain.

It means “O lord! Your body itself indicates that you are dispassionate. No further proof is required.” This statement is supported by an illustration - can a tree with fire in its hollow ever be green? No, the tree which has fire in its hollow can never be green. If you had kaayas (passions or negative emotions) within you, you would not have been so strong. But we are looking that your body is healthy and it implies that you are absolutely calm at heart. This verse reveals a reality that health is not related to only body, but it is also concerned with our chitta, mind and the emotions. Question may be raised that what is chitta and how it is connected with mind and emotions.

Many people are ineffective in recognizing the reality of problematic situations and thus do not have the option of choosing between happiness and unhappiness. However, it is within the grasp of modern man to acquire a very thorough understanding of Objective Reality and of man’s position in the universe. Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgements by a person about their overall wellbeing.

2.2 Buddhism The Buddha taught that happiness is one of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. But what is happiness? Dictionaries say happiness is a range of emotions, from contentment to joy. We might think of happiness as an ephemeral thing that floats in and out of our lives, or as our life’s essential goal, or as just the opposite of “sadness.”

2. Happiness and religion Most of the religions have described happiness and requested their members to follow the same. Let’s have look at various religious views on happiness. 2.1 Health and Happiness: Jain View Jainism is a soul oriented philosophy. For Bhagavana Mahavira, the supreme element was the soul. He spoke everything for the development of soul. He did not propound any theory particularly for health. In his teachings, the body has been viewed only as a factor that is helpful and useful for soul. He preached about keeping the soul healthy and his preaching became a scripture of spirituality. According to him the scripture of spirituality is the scripture of health. He said that if there is no purity of soul there is no health at all.

One word for “happiness” from the early Pali texts is piti, which is a deep tranquility or rapture. In order to understand the Buddha’s teachings on happiness, it’s important to understand piti. True Happiness Is a State of Mind As Buddha explained these things, physical and emotional feelings (vedana) correspond or attach to an object. For example, the sensation of hearing is created when a sense organ (ear) comes in contact with a sense object (sound). Similarly, ordinary happiness is a feeling that has an object -- for example, a happy event, winning a prize, or wearing pretty new shoes.

As far as the point of happiness is concerned, Jainism talks about ultimate happiness. It is that happiness, which cannot be replaced with any other happiness and which cannot ever be destroyed. And such happiness can only be achieved through being healthy at soul level. Here we are talking about happiness in day to day life. To experience, that happiness also one needs to be healthy. Health and happiness go hand in hand. Without happiness and peace of mind there is no health and without health there is no peace, bliss or happiness.

The problem with ordinary happiness is that it never lasts, because the objects of happiness don’t last. A happy event is soon followed by a sad one, and shoes wear out. Unfortunately, most of us go through life looking for things to “make us happy.” But our happy “fix” is never permanent, so we keep looking for things.

In Jain canonical text haa, we find the types of Sukha (happiness). The first type of them is Arogya (Health). If health is one of the causes of happiness then it would not be wrong to say that Roga (disease) is the cause of misery. It is a fact that we cannot separate health from happiness and happiness from health.

The happiness that is a factor of enlightenment is not dependent on objects, but is a state of mind cultivated through mental discipline. Because it is not dependent on an impermanent object, it does not come and go. A person who has cultivated piti still feels the effects of transitory emotions -- happiness or sadness -- but appreciates their impermanence and essential unreality. He or she is not

Now the question is that what does one need to be healthy and happy? Who is called happy and healthy person from all 51

perpetually grasping for wanted things while avoiding unwanted thing

2.4 Judaism Happiness or simcha (Hebrew) in Judaism is considered an important element in the service of God. The biblical verse “worship The Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs,” (Psalm 100:2) stresses joy in the service of God. A popular teaching by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, a 19th-century Chassidic Rabbi, is “Mitzvah Gedolah Le’hiyot Besimcha Tamid,” it is a great mitzvah (commandment) to always be in a state of happiness. When a person is happy they are much more capable of serving God and going about their daily activities than when depressed or upset.

2.3 Different meanings of happiness in Hindu philosophy

veeefmle efJeÐee meceb ®e#eg veeefmle mel³e meceb leHeë~ veeefmle jeie meceb ogëKeced veeefmle l³eeie meceb megKeced ~~ There is no (power of) vision like education. There is no penance as the owe of truth. There is no pain as that caused by desire. There is no act that gives more happiness than sacrifice.

2.5 Catholicism The primary meaning of “happiness” in various European languages involves good fortune, chance or happening. The meaning in Greek philosophy, however, refers primarily to ethics. In Catholicism, the ultimate end of human existence consists in felicity, Latin equivalent to the Greek eudaimonia, or “blessed happiness”, described by the 13th-century philosopher-theologian Thomas Aquinas as a Beatific Vision of God’s essence in the next life. Human complexities, like reason and cognition, can produce well-being or happiness, but such form is limited and transitory. In temporal life, the contemplation of God, the infinitely Beautiful, is the supreme delight of the will. Beatitudo, or perfect happiness, as complete well-being, is to be attained not in this life, but the next.

Hindu Philosophy believes happiness in sacrifice. Swami Vivekananda Swami Vivekananda has claimed that the reason different meanings of ananda and different ways of achieving it are present in Hindu philosophy is that humans differ from each other, and each chooses the most appropriate path to ananda for him or herself. Sri Aurobindo According to Sri Aurobindo, happiness is the natural state of humanity, as he mentions in his book - The Life Divine he informs about it as delight of existence. However, mankind develops dualities of pain and pleasure. Aurobindo goes on to say that the concepts of pain and suffering are due to habits developed over time by the mind, which treats success, honour and victory as pleasant things and defeat, failure, misfortune as unpleasant things.

2.6 Confucians The Chinese Confucian thinker Mencius, who 2300 years ago sought to give advice to the ruthless political leaders of the warring states period, was convinced that the mind played a mediating role between the “lesser self” (the physiological self) and the “greater self” (the moral self) and that getting the priorities right between these two would lead to sage-hood. He argued that if we did not feel satisfaction or pleasure in nourishing one’s “vital force” with “righteous deeds”, that force would shrivel up (Mencius,6A:15 2A:2). More specifically, he mentions the experience of intoxicating joy if one celebrates the practice of the great virtues, especially through music.

Advaita vedanta According to the Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy, ananda is that state of sublime delight when the jiva becomes free from all sins, all doubts, all desires, all actions, all pains, all sufferings and also all physical and mental ordinary pleasures. Having become established in Brahman it becomes jivanmukta (a being free from the cycle of rebirth).[4] The Upanishads repeatedly use the word Ananda to denote Brahman, the innermost Self, the Blissful One, who unlike the individual Self has no real attachments. Dvaita vedanta Based on a reading of the Bhagavad Gita, Dvaita vedanta interprets ananda as happiness derived via good thoughts and good deeds that depend on the state and on the control of the mind. Through evenness of temper and mind, the state of supreme bliss is reached in all aspects of one’s life.

2.7 Islam Happiness is a feeling that resides in the heart. It ischaracterized by peace of mind, tranquillity, a sense of wellbeing, and a relaxed disposition. It comes as a result of proper behaviour, both inward and outward and is inspired by strong faith. Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) said, “True enrichment does not come through possessing a lot of wealth, but true enrichment is the enrichment of the soul.” It is the nature of every person to seek happiness. One of the most elusive objectives of every human being is ‘happiness’. The Noble Qur’an reveals the secret of attaining perfect happiness in this life and forever. We learn from the Qur’an that happiness is the exclusive quality of the soul. Thus, a body that attains all the material successes it longs for – money, power, fame etc. may not always belong to a happy person. From an Islamic viewpoint, happiness is not restricted to material prosperity, though material reasons makeup some elements of happiness.

Vishishtadvaita vedanta According to the Vishishtadvaita vedanta school which was proposed by Ramanujacharya, true happiness can be only through divine grace, which can be only achieved by total surrender of one’s ego to the Divine Sri Ramana Maharshi According to Ramana Maharshi, happiness is within and can be known only through discovering one’s true self. He proposes that ananda can be attained by inner enquiry, using the thought “Who am I?” 52

The main focus in attaining happiness is on nonmaterialconcerns. Happiness depends totally on the degree of growth and development attained by the soul. The Qur’an provides a detailed route towards perfecthappiness for both body and soul, both in this world and in the eternal Hereafter.

always within you. It starts from within, but we associate it with external events, possessions, and people. Happiness is always here, but it is covered by thoughts, desires and fears. There is no need to search for happiness or to create it. There is no need to go through all kinds of experiences and actions in order to enjoy it. On the contrary, everything has to be dropped in order to experience it.

Conclusion These religious beliefs are a very important guide for understanding the importance of happiness in life. As described above, all religions have given importance to happiness and it’s like serving God.

When the ability to quiet the mind under all circumstances is gained, you enjoy constant happiness, no matter what you might be doing and where you are.

We are spiritual beings in physical bodies. The spiritual part is always happy. It is the happiness factor. Your mind and thoughts hide this happiness essence, like a cloud hiding the sun, but it is there all the time. We seek happiness outside, because we believe it is out there, but it is actually

So stay happy and enjoy life!! SSSSSS

“The way to happiness is: keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, give much. Fill your life with love. Do as you would be done by.” – Gautama Buddha
