UConn is playing in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational for the fourth time in its history, following appearances in the 2000, 2005, and 2010 events. The Huskies own an 8-1 all-time record in the Maui Invitational, finishing in fifth place in 2000, and taking home the tournament championship in both 2005 and 2010. UConn’s first trip to Hawaii actually occurred in Dec., 1993, when the Huskies finished third in the Big Island Invitational, held in Hilo. In the 2000 Maui Invitational, the Huskies lost in the first round to Dayton, then, led by future NBA star Caron Butler, rallied to defeat Chaminade and Louisville to capture fifth place. UConn had more success in its next two trips to the Hawaiian tournament. In the 2005 event, the Huskies opened with a win over Arkansas, then stopped Arizona in the semifinals. With future NBAer Rudy Gay, Denham Brown and Rashad Anderson leading the way, UConn nipped Gonzaga, 65-63, in the championship game. That UConn team eventually reached the NCAA Elite Eight. In the 2010 Maui Invitational, the Huskies knocked off Wichita State in the first round, then defeated Michigan State in the semifinals. Sparked by tourney MVP Kemba Walker, UConn stopped Kentucky, 84-67, in the finals to claim its second Maui Invitational crown. That UConn team went on to win the program’s third NCAA national championship.

days against Wagner and Northeastern, then journeyed to Los Angeles to play Thursday night at Loyola Marymount. Following that game, the Huskies took another 6-hour plane ride to compete in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, on Nov. 21-23. After the long trip home, UConn will play host to Boston University on Nov. 30, completing a busy first month of the season. AGAINST THE BIG 12: UConn has only played Oklahoma State once before, a loss in 1970, but the Huskies have a 27-18 record alltime against teams currently in the Cowboys’ conference, the Big 12. The breakdown against teams from the Big 12 is: 1-0 vs. Baylor, 1-1 vs. Iowa State, 0-3 vs. Kansas, 1-3 vs. Oklahoma, 0-1 vs. Oklahoma State, 6-3 vs. Texas, 2-1 vs. TCU, and 16-6 vs. West Virginia. UConn has never met Kansas State, nor Texas Tech. LAST TIME OUT: UConn registered its first win of the season, topping Loyola Marymount in a 65-62 nailbiter at LMU’s Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles on Nov. 17. In a game that featured 16 lead changes, the Huskies rallied from a second-half deficit to tie the game, 54-54, with 8:01 remaining and the teams were neck-and-neck from that point on. LMU took a 62-61 lead with 2:47 to go, but the Huskies would not allow another point and an offensive putback by sophomore Terry Larrier and two free throws by sophomore Jalen Adams provided the margin of victory. Larrier was UConn’s top scorer with 14 points, while freshman Alterique Gilbert added 10 before suffering a shoulder injury late in the first half and missing the rest of the game. Senior Amida Brimah had 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks in a solid all-around performance. CLOSE, BUT...: UConn played a thriller against longtime New England rival Northeastern on Nov. 14 in Gampel Pavilion. It took until the final shot to clinch a 64-61 win for Northeastern as a steal and final three-point attempt by UConn freshman Alterique Gilbert was just off the mark. UConn had taken a lead in the first 5:00 of the second half, but Northeastern proved up to the task, fighting off numerous UConn runs to beat the Storrs Huskies for the first time in 31 years. For the second straight game, redshirt sophomore Terry Larrier led UConn in scoring (17), while sophomore Jalen Adams added 15 points and senior Amida Brimah blocked eight shots. TOUGH OPENER: UConn lost a season opener for the first time in 17 years as it fell to Wagner College, 67-58, on Nov. 11 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies fell behind early, made numerous runs at the Seahawks’ lead and fought their way back into a tie in the second half, but could never take over the lead. Two newcomers were bright spots for UConn, however. Redshirt sophomore Terry Larrier, playing his first game for UConn after transferring from VCU

and sitting out last season, led the team with 19 points and 7 rebounds, while freshman guard Alterique Gilbert also reached double figures with 14 points. Sophomore Jalen Adams scored 9 points and handed out 5 assists. As a team, UConn held Wagner to 37.7 percent shooting. PRESEASON WINS: UConn finished its two-game exhibition season with a 94-65 win over Division II Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 5 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies began the second half with a 25-6 explosion, including the first 14 points by senior Amida Brimah, to put the game out of reach. Brimah was 8-of-8 from the floor and finished with 17 points, one of four Huskies in double figures. Senior Rodney Purvis (19), sophomore Jalen Adams (15) and redshirt sophomore Terry Larrier (13) also were in double figures as all 13 Huskies who played scored at least 2 points. That win followed an 83-68 win over the University of New Haven in which five UConn players reached double figures, led by 15 points from freshman forward Vance Jackson on Oct. 30 at the XL Center. A 13-0 UConn run midway through the second half, keyed by Jackson and Larrier, broke the game open for the Huskies. Larrier had 14 points and seven rebounds, senior Kentan Facey added 13 points, Adams chipped in 12 and Purvis scored 10 for UConn. TOP 25: UConn appears in “Others receiving votes” in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Top 25 polls announced on Nov. 14. The Huskies were #18 in the AP Preseason Top 25 and #16 in the USA Today Preseason Top 25. The AP ranking marks the sixth consecutive season and the 13th time in the last 15 years that UConn has been ranked in the Top 25 preseason poll. UConn opponents Syracuse, Cincinnati, Ohio State, SMU and Wagner are also receiving mention in the polls as are possible opponents (Maui Jim Maui Invitational) North Carolina, Oregon, and Wisconsin. NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: UConn had a perfect 8-0 record at home last season in regular-season non-conference games, but is 1-2 in non-conference games so far this season. The Huskies went 1-0 on the road and 1-3 in neutral site games last year for an overall regular-season, non-conference record of 10-3. Under Coach Kevin Ollie, UConn owns an overall record of 40-13 (.755) in regular-season, non-conference games and a home record of 27-5 (.844) in regular-season, non-conference games. THE AAC PRESEASON PICKS: In a vote of the American Athletic Conference head coaches, UConn was picked No. 2 in the team standings, one point behind Cincinnati. Cincinnati received six first-place votes to UConn’s five. UConn sophomore guard Jalen Adams was named to the All-AAC Preseason

Following this season’s trip to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational with its outstnding field of teams, in November, 2017, UConn will take part in PK80 - Phil Knight Invitational, a 16-team, two-tournament event in Portland, Ore., which will honor the founder of Nike on his 80th birthday. The tournaments will take place simultaneously at the Rose Quarter’s Mota Center and the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Besides UConn, the field includes Arkansas, Butler, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Stanford, and Texas. The last game in which the Huskies failed to convert a three-point shot occurred on Nov. 27, 2009, during a 68-59 loss to Duke in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden in New York City. UConn was 0-for-4

Redshirt senior Rodney Purvis needs 138 points to reach 1,000 points scored at UConn. Purvis already has 1,154 career points, including 292 scored at North Carolina State during his freshman season (2012-13).

players reset their feet on the perimeter or change pivot feet in the post; a coach will be allowed to call timeout from the sideline during a throw-in by his team, prior to the ball being released.

RULE CHANGES: Despite 2016-17 being an “off-year” for major rule changes in college basketball, a number of new interpretations have been implemented, most of them designed to reduce physicality in the game. They include an emphasis on post play: dislodging an opponent, whether on offense or defense, constitutes a foul; if an offensive player posts with his arms out to the side to ward off a defender, it is an offensive foul; if the defender uses a “swim stroke” in an attempt to front an offensive player, it is a defensive foul; if the defender “lays” of the offensive player with more than incidental contact, it is a foul; free throw situations in which the offensive player (second player position on the lane line) shoves the player on the first position in order to gain a rebounding advantage is a foul; traveling will be a point of emphasis, especially when

A LOOK AT OKLAHOMA STATE: First-year OSU coach Brad Underwood has brought a high-powered offense with him, and the Cowboys have responded, breaking the 100-point plateau in each of their first three games. The 1-2 backcourt punch of guards Jawun Evans (22.3 ppg, 6.3 assists per game) and Phil Forte (22.0 ppg) has triggered most of the firepower, along with top reserve Jeff Carroll (18.7 ppg). Leyton Hammonds (7.3 rpg) and Mitchell Solomon (2.3 rpg) provide the strength underneath, along with tough freshman Cameron McGriff (3.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg). The Cowboys don’t worry much about the shot clock, averaging more than 67 shot attempts per game and have forced more than 20 turnovers per game. They are shooting a hot .522 as a team.

2016-2017 University of Connecticut Basketball Media Notes November 21, 2016 vs. Oklahoma State UConnHuskies.com

Kevin OLLIE Head Coach

5th year as HC; 7th year at UConn Chalk up another first among the coaching accomplishments of fouryear UConn Head Basketball Coach Kevin Ollie. In March, 2016, after reaching the championship game of the American Athletic Conference postseason tournament for the third consecutive season, the Huskies captured their first AAC title with a 72-58 victory over Memphis at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. The win secured a second berth in the NCAA Championship in Ollie’s four years, where the Huskies defeated Colorado in the first round before bowing to overall No. 1 seed Kansas in a second-round game. Ollie’s .875 winning percentage (71) in the NCAA Tournament ranks fourth in history of all who have ever coached in the tourney. Add that to a fourth consecutive 20-win season, his second season of 25 wins or more (25-11), and it’s easy to see why Ollie is considered one of the top young coaches in college basketball. In just four seasons as UConn’s head coach, following two years as an assistant under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun, Ollie has already experienced a long career’s worth of ups and downs --- including the ultimate high of the college basketball coaching profession, the 2014 NCAA National Championship. His teams have never won less than 20 games, while posting three perfect APR scores of 1000. His career record of 97-44 (.688) already has him fifth on UConn’s all-time coaching wins list. It took Ollie just 70 games to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA championship. In just his second season as UConn’s head basketball coach and only his fourth year in coaching since retiring from the NBA, Ollie firmly established himself in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA

title, defeating Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. On his way to guiding UConn to their its fourth NCAA crown in the history of the program, Ollie marched the Huskies past storied programs Saint Joseph’s, Villanova, Iowa State, Michigan State, and Florida in the tournament before the finale against Kentucky. Ollie accepted a huge responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball. Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, Ollie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year. At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider. com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach. Coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Ollie played on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, as a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks fourth on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications. After his UConn career, Ollie fought through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. Yet Ollie would not be deterred,

earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities. Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury and has two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
