November 24, 2012 • at Louisville PASQUALONI AND BIG EAST RECORDS UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni has won more BIG EAST Conference games (league contests only) than any other coach in history. Pasqualoni has 66 league wins from 1991-2004 and 2011-12 while Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech is second with 57. With his five wins in 2011 and four this season, Pasqualoni is also first in league history in overall wins with 116 to top the mark of Beamer with 108. HUSKIES ON WATCH LISTS, PRESEASON HONORS Four members of the University of Connecticut football team were named to seven major award watch lists over the course of the 2012 preseason. Senior Tight End Ryan Griffin (Londonderry, N.H.) * John Mackey Award Watch List * Lombardi Award Watch List Sophomore Running Back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) * Doak Walker Award Watch List * Maxwell Award Watch List Senior Linebacker Sio Moore (Apex, N.C.) * Butkus Award Watch List * Lombardi Award Watch List Senior Defensive End Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) * Bednarik Award Watch List * Lombardi Award Watch List * Nagursky Trophy Watch List Griffin was placed on both the Mackey Award and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists. The Mackey is awarded to the nation’s top tight end, while the Lombardi honors the nation’s top lineman or linebacker. Griffin was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011 and ranked third on UConn with 33 receptions, three for touchdowns, and 499 yards. McCombs earned a spot on both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists. The Maxwell Award is given to the country’s top player in college football and the Doak Walker is awarded to the nation’s top running back. Moore was honored with a spot on both the Lombardi Award and Butkus Award watch lists. The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker and recognizes 51 players on its watch list in the preseason to honor the jersey number of Dick Butkus. Williams was named to three award watch lists. He landed on the Bednarik and Lombardi Award watch lists as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list. The Bednarik and Nagurski are each awarded to the nation’s best defensive player. Williams A Finalist For Pop Warner Award Senior wide receiver and returner Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) has been named one of four finalists for the third annual Pop Warner National College Football Award.The award, established in 2010, recognizes a Pop Warner alumnus who has made a difference on the field, in the classroom and in his community. It is presented to a student-athlete who has taken the ideals of Pop Warner to the next level and serves as a role model to Pop Warner’s young scholar athletes. Williams played Pop Warner football in Highstown, N.J., in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Williams is UConn’s all-time leader in return yardage (punt and kickoff) with 2,389 yards and was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week – the second time this year he has earned that honor – following the Pittsburgh game. He is an economics major who will graduate this December and was a member of the 2011 BIG EAST All-Academic team. The 2012 finalists also include Duke quarterback Sean Renfree, Miami (Fla.) running back Mike James and Michigan offensive guard Patrick Omameh. The winner of the Pop Warner National College Football Award will be announced on December 5 during the 56th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl.
