What a year – Thanks to You! It was a Championship year for Central Missouri Athletics in 2017-18, capped off with not one, but two National Championships from Jennies Soccer and Jennies Basketball. In addition, Central Missouri captured four MIAA Championships, a regular season and tournament championship from Jennies Soccer, a regular season championship from Jennies Basketball and a tournament championship from Mules Baseball. Five teams finished in the top 25 of NCAA Division II, in either the final poll or at an NCAA Championship event, and nine sports qualified for NCAA postseason play. Jennies Soccer and Jennies Basketball of course made national headlines winning the NCAA Championship. Mules Baseball won two games at the NCAA Regional Championship, while Mules Cross Country returned to the National Championships and placed 20th and the Mules outdoor Track and Field team placed 21st. The Jennies Bowling team finished the season ranked 18th in the country. Individually, UCM had 29 different All-America seasons and performances. Seven were named MIAA Player of the Year: From Jennies Soccer, Jada Scott was the Offensive Player of the Year, Ana Dilkes Goalkeeper of the Year and Kayla Hamner Defensive Player of the Year; Paige Redmond was the MIAA’s Offensive Player of the Year in women’s basketball and Kayonna Lee the Defensive Player of the Year, and Devante Turner from Mules Football and Paytynn Kuhns from Jennies Bowling were the conference’s Freshman of the Year for their respective sports. Additionally, Jennies Soccer Coach Lewis Theobald and his staff were named the Central Region Women’s Soccer Coaching Staff of the Year and the National Coaching Staff of the Year, and Jennies Basketball Coach Dave Slifer and his staff were the Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year. These outstanding accomplishments helped UCM to win the 2017-18 MIAA Commissioner’s Cup as the top overall athletic department in the conference for the second year in a row. Central Missouri also finished 19th in the Division II Learfield Cup standings, the 18th time in the last 19 years finishing in the top-20. Our 500-plus student-athletes continued their success in the classroom as well, with 280 studentathletes being named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, including 22 Academic Excellence Awards earned by student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Forty-four UCM student-athletes were honored as MIAA Scholar-Athletes, boasting grade point averages of 3.5 or higher and having earned All-MIAA honors in their respective sports. In addition, eight UCM student-athletes were named to the Academic All-America Teams in their respective sports, and Abby Rhodes of Jennies Soccer earned the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
