1984 Live A live, start-to-finish reading of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four in Senate House. This unique event offers the opportunity to hear perhaps the most pervasively influential novel of the 20th-century read aloud by actors, writers, journalists and members of the public, in the building that inspired the literary world’s most fearsome building.
Dickens night walks “The restlessness of a great city, and the way in which it tumbles and tosses before it can get to sleep…” In a unique collaboration between UCL English, the Charles Dickens Museum and the Horse Hospital, this evening event combines a walk, insights and performances inspired by Dickens’s Night Walks.
Playing Beowulf We’ve seen books and comics turned into films and plays, and vice versa, but what about a poem becoming a video game? The ‘Playing Beowulf’ project combines Old English poetry with video game authoring software. Try your own hand at bringing Beowulf to life through performance, play and game design.

Thorold Dickinson’s Record of War – a devastating exposé of alternative facts Britain’s first professor of film, Thorold Dickinson was based at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art. This screening at the Birkbeck Cinema is a unique experiment that will show Dickinson’s ground-breaking deconstruction of official alternative facts in which he screened footage of two radically opposed perspectives of the same war and transformed what had been propaganda and counter-propaganda into evidence.
Treasures of the written word A rare opportunity to view highlights from one of the UK’s foremost university collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives and records, alongside workshops and digital resources. Items range from medieval manuscripts to early printed books to Orwell and 1960s poetry.
Maternity in Shakespeare A number of arresting British portraits from the 16th and early 17th centuries depict their female subjects as visibly pregnant. This session will present these striking images alongside literary depictions of pregnancy by Shakespeare and others, as well as medical writings on pregnancy and motherhood from the period.
Zugunruhe: exploring migration experiences through sound Tom Bailey, Leverhulme Artist in Residence at UCL Geography, will present his sound walk installation Zugunruhe – a theatre project that explores migration patterns in both humans and the natural world, and examines the cultural and political construction of a ‘refugee’. Tom will take you on a walking tour and discuss the installation, which was on show at the Southbank in 2016.
German responses to mass violence Wars and mass violence have played a fundamental part in modern German history. We discuss reactions to the violence by soldiers and civilians, the political and cultural protest movements that such violence helped engender and the ways in which comedy played an important part in responses to violence.
Metamorphosis: monsters, beasts and humans What is human, what is animal and what is monstrous? This panel discussion will highlight how ideas about what makes humans, monsters or beasts have changed through history, shifting their limits and making us wonder what is human and what is not. This session will also include a grand prize quiz.
Gold in art What is the significance of the use of gold in art? Our academics will discuss the spiritual and material values of gold and its role in representation in Italian Renaissance painting. Tracing the transformation of chalices to coins, they will also explore the liquidation of precious metalwork during periods of upheaval in early modern Europe, specifically the Reformation.
The anatomy of festivals Discover the anatomy of festivals and their historical ties to community, conviviality and sociality – from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the present day’s plethora of biennials, triennials and music festivals and the current backlash against our ‘experience economy’.
