ARMEN KIRAKOSSIAN

UCLA Men’s Golf Head Coach

2nd Season

UT Pan American ‘10

Head coach Armen Kirakossian was named the new head coach of the UCLA Men’s Golf program on June 13, 2022, by Martin Jarmond and just completed his first season leading the Bruins in 2022-23.

Kirakossian, who owns nine total years of collegiate coaching experience, led the Bruins to three top 5 team finishes in his first year at the helm of the program. The season was highlighted by t-5th mark at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational where two Bruins - Pablo Ereño and Omar Morales - finished in the top 20. Morales was the most impressive individual performer in Kirakossian’s debut season. After finishing 89th in his first event of the season, Morales improved each tournament, culminating in the first medal of his collegiate career at the El Macero Classic. Ten days later, Morales competed in his first PGA TOUR event at the Mexico Open. On June 5, Morales qualified for the 123rd U.S. Open after winning his qualifying round at Hillcrest Country Club.

“Armen brings a wealth of championship-level success, having helped produce some of the top amateur golfers in the nation,” said UCLA’s Alice and Nahum Lainer Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond. “His ability to connect and develop student athletes has made him one of the top assistant coaches in the country, and I’m excited to welcome him to Westwood!”

“Every coach dreams of being able to lead a program at a prestigious university and athletic department such as UCLA,” Kirakossian said. “I can’t thank Martin Jarmond, Chris Carlson and the search committee enough for their belief in me. It was clear throughout the process that UCLA was a special place that attracts great people. I will make sure the players have an amazing collegiate golf experience, achieving greatness on the course and in the classroom.”

Before UCLA, Kirakossian spent five seasons at Arizona State, two as associate head coach and three as an assistant. He helped lead the Sun Devils to four consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2021-22 and a third-place showing in 2020-21. During Kirakossian’s tenure, Arizona State produced more All-Pac-12 honorees than any other school in the conference, with 17. In 2021-22, the Sun Devils boasted a Pac-12-leading four first-team selections, the most by an ASU team since 1993-94.

Following the 2018-19 season, Kirakossian was named a Strickland Award Winner, as the top assistant coach in the country. He has coached three consecutive Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year award -winners from 2019-22 in Cameron Sisk (2019), David Puig (2021) and Preston Summerhays (2022), and a total of 11 All-Americans at Arizona State. Under Kirakossian and Head Coach Matt Thurmond, the Sun Devils ranked in the Top 10 in the final Golfweek Rankings in each of the last four seasons. In addition, Arizona State has won 15 team tournaments and 15 individual titles over the last five seasons.

Prior to coaching at Arizona State, Kirakossian was an assistant coach for Pepperdine University from 2015-17. At Pepperdine, Kirakossian helped oversee a turnaround in the Waves’ program with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, its best mark since 2005. Further, Pepperdine ranked 19th in the final Golfweek rankings for a 59-spot improvement from when Kirakossian joined the team.

Several individuals shined under Kirakossian’s leadership at Pepperdine, including Hogan and Nicklaus award winner Sahith Theegala, who regularly competes on the PGA Tour. At Arizona State, Chun An Yu became the No. 1 amateur in the world by the end of the 2019-20 season.

Kirakossian also brings head coaching experience. Before his time at Pepperdine, Kirakossian was the head coach at his alma mater, Texas Pan American (UTPA), where he led the Broncos to three top-five finishes in 2014-15. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at UTPA in 201213 prior to being hired as head coach in August 2014. One of Kirakossian’s student-athletes, Nicolas Paltret, won the Western Athletic Conference’s individual crown and advanced to an NCAA Regional, becoming the school’s first student-athlete to participate in the NCAAs since 1978.

Kirakossian was a member of UTPA’s golf team, earning first-team all-conference and AllAmerican Scholar honors. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2010.

MASON BANGER

UCLA Men’s Golf Assistant Coach 1st Season Harding ‘18

UCLA Men’s Golf Head Coach Armen Kirakossian named Mason Banger assistant coach on July 3, 2023.

“I am very pleased to welcome Mason Banger to the Bruin Family,” Kirakossian said. “Mason is ready to get to work and help elevate UCLA golf back to the national stage. He has built a great reputation for being a high-character, hard-working and caring coach. Mason is going to make a large positive impact on our guys both as players and men. Welcome to Westwood Mason and Caroline Banger.”

Banger arrives to Westwood with three and a half seasons of NCAA Division I and II coaching experience. Most recently, Banger spent Spring 2022 and the entire 2022-2023 season at Abilene Christian where he helped the Wildcats to the 2022 Western Athletic Conference Championship in their first year in the new league. It was also Abilene Christian’s first men’s golf conference title as a Division I program.

“I am excited to be joining Coach Kirakossian and the UCLA golf team,” Banger said. “UCLA is steeped in athletic tradition and it has been a dream of mine to coach at the highest level in collegiate athletics. I am looking forward to adding value to a program that is continuing to climb back to its rightful place in college golf. Armen has a fantastic vision for the program. I could not be happier to have the opportunity to work under one of the top coaches in the country.”

The Wildcats finished 2021-2022 with a 10th-place finish in the NCAA Stockton Regional. Abilene Christian placed eighth at the 2023 WAC Championship after graduating five key members from the previous season’s squad.

In the 2018-2019 campaign, Banger served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Harding University (Division II) where he understudied head coach Dustin Howell who has led the Bisons’ men’s golf program for 15 seasons as of 2023.

In 1988, the UCLA men’s golf team won the program’s first team championship at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.

Trailing by 13 shots entering the final day of the tournament, the Bruins rallied for one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA golf history. UCLA shot a 3-over 287 over the final 18 holes to win the national championship by three shots over Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and UTEP.

The Bruins’ Brandt Jobe fired a finalround, 2-under 69 to finish tied for second (+3, 287), which at that point was the best individual finish ever for a UCLA golfer at the NCAA Championships. Although no other Bruin finished among the Top 20, clutch performances, especially on the final day, produced one of the most memorable championship moments in UCLA history.

Kevin Leach, who won twice on the season and had eight Top 10 finishes, was Second Team All-American and First Team All-Pac-10 Conference. Bobby Lasken, who also won a tournament, was Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-Pac-10 and Jobe was an Honorable Mention All-American.

Senior Kevin Chappell made a par on the 18th hole to give UCLA a one-shot victory over Stanford on May 31, 2008 at the 111th NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, hosted by Purdue at its Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.

Chappell won the individual title and led the fourth-ranked Bruins to their first men’s golf championship since 1988. He finished at 2-under 286 and was the only player in the field under par for the event. He became the first UCLA player to win NCAA medalist honors.

“The feeling I have right now is better than anything,” said Chappell. “To win individually is great, but it becomes even more special because the team also won. I can’t say enough about this team. All season long we’ve always been there to pick each other up and that’s what championship teams do.”

In the third round, Chappell made a round-saving bogey from knee-high rough at the 18th hole. That score helped him post a cool 68 (-4) and assume first place entering the final round. At the time, he called it “the best bogey of my life.” He amended that statement after the final round with a bogey that preserved the Bruins’ national championship. At the 71st hole, a 230-yard par 3 over water, Chappell dumped his tee shot in the hazard. His third shot from the drop area skirted 22 paces past the hole -- almost a certain double-bogey.

“I knew he could get it up and down from there,” said head coach Derek Freeman. “I figured we’d take [a] five and move on to 18.”

The two-time All-American chipped it in. “That was the best bogey of my entire life,” he said.

Chappell had struggled most of the week at the 18th. In the second round, he came to the brutish 484-yard par 4 at 1-under par. A double-bogey gave him a 73 (+1). His bogey there in the third round prevented him from carding a 67 (-5).

And in the final round, he knew a par would preserve the Bruins’ precarious one-shot lead and their championship dreams. His tee shot found the fairway, leaving him 189 yards to the green. His second shot landed 20 feet above the hole. He barely missed making a birdie, but tapped in for par before the entire UCLA entourage charged the green to embrace their senior leader.

“This is huge for our school which prides itself on national championships,” said Freeman. “Now, I want to figure out how to get better because I sure like this feeling.”

Senior Craig Leslie’s birdies at the 16th and 18th holes proved crucial to the Bruins’ title hopes, as well as key par saves on the final holes by junior Erik Flores and freshman Philip Francis.
