ANNUAL REPORT

OUR VISION: TO BE A 21ST CENTURY LEADER IN INNOVATIVE NURSING EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PRACTICE THAT IMPACTS THE HEALTH OF A GLOBAL COMMUNITY.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

W

elcome to the UCF College of Nursing annual report. For more than four decades, UCF has been leading the charge in nursing education, research and practice. Our achievements in the 2022/2023 academic year not only build

upon our history of excellence, but are blazing a trail forward to unleash the potential of our faculty, staff, students and Knight nurse alumni. The 2022/2023 academic year was a momentous one at the UCF College of Nursing. •

Took a big step toward our long-awaited new building on UCF’s Academic Health Sciences Campus with a $29 million transformational investment from the State of Florida (more on p. 11).

Addressed the critical nursing shortage with $6.9 million in PIPELINE funding, creating a second cohort of 100 Traditional BSN students, hiring 40 additional faculty and staff, and adding valuable resources to support student success.

Increased our impact on nursing education and patient care, doubling faculty research in the last four years. These efforts will only continue to grow as our new home will foster greater innovation and collaborative interdisciplinary research.

Climbed the national rankings, breaking the top 10 for our online graduate programs and earning the highest ranking in university history for our bachelor’s degree programs.

I am in awe of all that we have accomplished in this milestone year. It is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff, the support of our alumni, partners and community, and the success of our students. Thank you. Charge on!

NOTABLE RESEARCH UCF LEADS DEVELOPMENT OF FIRST LARGE-SCALE SYSTEM FOR EXTENDED REALITY RESEARCH Endowed Chair Greg Welch is leading a nearly $5 million U.S. National Science Foundation-funded project to develop the first, large-scale system for extended reality human subjects research. Called the Virtual Experience Research Accelerator, or VERA, the system will enable researchers to carry out large studies in extended reality (XR) environments, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality and mixed reality, with large and diverse populations. bit.ly/UCFVERA

UCF TEAM AWARDED $2.3M GRANT FOR INNOVATIVE INTERVENTION TO PREVENT FALLS Falls — and the fear of falling — are the leading cause of injury, disability and hospitalization among racially diverse, low-income older adults. A team of UCF researchers, led by College of Nursing aging expert Ladda Thiamwong, is partnering with the City of Orlando on a $2.3 million project that seeks to address the public health problem and prevent falls with the optimization of technology that is low-cost and portable. bit.ly/UCF-Falls-Research

GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER Thanks to a $500,000 grant, an interdisciplinary team of UCF researchers, including Associate Professor Desiree Díaz, are focusing on the human connection to improve heart health in medically underserved communities — the leading cause of death in the U.S. The project aims to educate the next generation of nurses, nurse practitioners and social workers to ultimately improve the heart health of individuals living in medically underserved communities. bit.ly/UCF-Heart
