The early portion of winter quarter always provides the benefit of training in a team context, given that practice begins on the opening day of class each January. Nevertheless, long weeks of training with no competitive opportunities for many of the distance squad can prove challenging. This winter, in addition to the indoor meets scheduled for the women’s track team, a small group of Aggie distance runners will travel to San Diego to compete in the USA Cross Country Championships. Held each year in February, the championship race serves as a qualifying event for the World Cross Country Championships held each March. The schedule of events includes junior (19 and under) races of 6 kilometers for the females and 8 kilometers for the males, while the open races feature 8 kilometers for the women and 12 kilometers for the men. Mission Bay Park will serve as the site for this year’s races, and in 2008 when the meet was held there it proved to be a wildly successful event with stellar performances in every race contested. This February frosh Hilary Teaford and Shannon Harcus will compete in the women’s junior race, while frosh Alex Summers will race as a men’s junior competitor. Early in his training cycles following the breakthrough cross country campaign, Jonathan Peterson will test his mettle against the men’s open field. Assistant Coach and Aggie alum Kim Conley will cast her lot in the women’s open race, as will 2010 Aggie alum Kaitllin Gregg. We would love to see any and all Aggie alum in the SD or Southland areas on hand to support on February 5. Stop by and say hello and cheer for the Ags if you are in the vicinity.

Former Ags and Aggie supporters, Happy belated new year to all. Hopefully the first weeks of 2011 have brought good health and happiness to all. Here in Davis, all event groups of the track and field program are four weeks in to winter quarter practices, with the opportunity to don the Aggie singlets for the first time in 2011 now upon us. Even for those Aggies competing during the winter months, the focus remains solidly on the championship month that starts in May, encompassing the Big West Conference Championships, NCAA preliminary round in Eugene and the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, IA. Stay tuned for all the news between now and season’s end and thanks in advance for your continued support.
