SHAPE

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear UCDS Community,

Our 2021-22 school year unfolded with hope and optimism. As we emerged from a two-year global pandemic, the central theme of our experience across all constituency groups was that “community matters.” Our students celebrated being together again, and our classrooms hummed with creative activity. Teachers were inspired to be working directly with students and each other once again to design the magic that is our program hallmark. Families were equally grateful to be able to come into the buildings each day and to gather on campus.

The all-school theme, SHAPE, was a glorious platform for program design school-wide. Teachers crafted curriculum that gave our students the tools they need to see the world from a wider perspective, especially in this time of social dynamism and change. In every aspect of our program, faculty created opportunities for us to gain an appreciation of diverse cultures and communities. This work continues to strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in our community.

We are grateful for the exceptional support of our families, who volunteer their time, energy, and creativity to shape our school. President Fabi Kirst and the Parent Guardian Association hosted several virtual and in-person events culminating in an amazing “Boogie and Glow” dance party on the playground. In addition, we thank Ravi and Shanthi Rajagopalan and Kai Shih and Ingrid Chiang, who led our UCDS Fund in achieving 100% participation and raising $451,301 to support our vibrant programs.

Our Night to Unite auction co-chairs Ana Flávia Hedrick and Crystal Aspen and their team put on a spectacular event on our UCDS campus, raising over $510,000 to support Tuition Assistance, Teacher Excellence, and Student Learning Support. Due to these initiatives, we were able to offer over $1.2 million dollars in tuition assistance to promote access for families, maintain our trajectory for equitable pay for faculty, and to expand our services to students who need additional learning support. Sustaining our teaching culture is crucial to our continued success. The night was a resounding success and a joyous occasion for families to celebrate together in person.

UCDS Mission, University Child Development School designs a culture of inquiry essential to meaningful learning. We cultivate reflective, collaborative, skillful thinkers who ignite positive change in their communities. We engage diverse perspectives in an ongoing effort to shape & share our innovative education model.

The significant work initiated by our Board of Trustees saw progress as we continued our commitment to the goals of our Five-Year Strategic Plan. Campus expansion is top of mind as we follow our plan to increase enrollment. We added an additional 1-2 and another 3-4 classroom over the past five years, and our Board approved creating expanded classroom space for 5th grade. In all our Board and Committee conversations, we prioritize elevating our programs with heightened attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion and confronting the challenges of affordability, longevity, and access.

Meanwhile, the UCDS Imagine Forever capital campaign is quietly building momentum toward realizing our campus expansion goals. Building on the land bank we started before the pandemic, we focused on property acquisition to the north and south of our campus to strategically support the future growth of our Infant-Toddler Education, Early Elementary, Elementary, and College for School Culture programs, and the eventual addition of a middle school. We are grateful for the significant efforts of our Board members and the early supporters who have generously invested in the future of UCDS through this capital effort.

As we see in our returning alumni, UCDS students “Move On” and create positive, impactful, and meaningful change in the world. We are so proud to be the foundation from which they launch into learning, and we are thankful for your partnership.

Gratefully,

Amy Smith, UCDS Board Chair

PORTRAITS & SHAPE STUDIES

EVERY STUDENT, FROM OUR YOUNGEST TO OUR OLDEST, HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE PORTRAITS USING A VARIETY OF MEDIUMS

Over several months, teachers offered many provocations designed to help students explore self-portraiture and all of the complex motor, communication, and observation skills within. By exploring their “me-ness” (a phrase coined by famed early childhood educator Loris Malaguzzi), children learn a great deal about themselves by studying themselves in a mirror and recreating what they see.

Studio

preschoolers experimented with skin color by using photos of themselves as the canvas. They mixed the skin-color paints and then worked to match the colors by layering the paint on top of their photo. As the project evolved, students were invited to use a wide range of materials, including various types of paint, found objects, and loose parts to create and recreate multiple iterations of their self-portrait.

Early Elementary

students used mirrors to examine their faces and create different shapes, shades, and tones with clay in Art with Jessica. Teachers connected this art exploration to conversations in the classroom about what makes them unique as individuals, learners, and friends. Using books as a jumping point, teachers facilitated conversations with students about their unique physical attributes and the strengths that they bring to the UCDS community.

04 21-22 ANNUAL REPORT

students brainstormed identity circles in the fall, illustrating the different facets that make up their life. In the spring, they were inspired by Tyler Gordon’s paintings in his book We Can: Portraits of Power. His style of painting, which utilizes the highlights and shadows of his subjects’ faces, provided inspiration for students. Students examined and recreated their faces as a series of irregular shapes and shadows, which often didn’t come to life until the last mid-tone layers of color were added in.

3-4

students completed a three-dimensional portrait study in Art with Jessica and Melinda. They began by working in facial-feature teams to design as many different kinds and shapes of the feature they were assigned. These mouth, hair, nose, eyes, and ear teams created “dictionaries” of sorts, and they presented their process and creations to the rest of the class. Each student created their own egg carton portrait, and the results were stunning!

5th-Grade

students mixed watercolor to create skin color, hair, and eyes. Then, they made scanned watercolors for the outlines. The borders are images from nature that are representative of each student as a learner and community member.*

UCDS COLLEGE FOR SCHOOL CULTURE

Graduate School of Education

The UCDS Master of Education Program is the evolution of UCDS' deep history of developing exceptional educators with its culture of collaboration and mentorship. Practicum-focused courses allow graduate students to weave theory into practice. Each course supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for its students and for those they will serve in the future. Students focus their educational lens on the philosophies and practices that promote a culture of inquiry and excitement for learning. We aim for our graduates to build the intangible skills of great teaching that are often missed in traditional programs—those needed to shape culture, collaborate to ensure meaningful learning for all students, and design innovative curriculum.

Graduate students complete a Capstone project in their final year. Each student designs this action research project to investigate their educational questions and to explore and shape their teaching philosophy and practice. The Capstone project gives Master’s candidates an in-depth experience in reflective practice, educational research, and teacher leadership—essential tools for educational leaders. UCDS Master's candidates are attuned to institutional culture and recognize it as an asset that they can influence and leverage to improve their students' learning.

The UCDS Graduate School opened its doors to its first students in August of 2020, and we celebrated our first graduating class of Master's degree candidates on Saturday, June 11, 2022. We are incredibly proud of our students who are already making a positive impact on their schools! We could not be more impressed by our graduates' commitment to their practice as educators, and we look forward to following their careers as they continue to create value in their communities.

CAPSTONE PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Achijah Berry explored social-emotional learning and the connections between curriculum, student awareness and student ability to problem solve and manage conflict. Through this work, Achijah helped her colleagues at SAAS start to reimagine the tools used for social emotional learning and their connection to teachers, students and families.

Mackenzie Hasenauer investigated oracy, or student talk, and its importance for expression and academic and social emotional growth. She increased her UCDS colleagues’ understanding of what being an effective communicator looks like. Through this work, she showed a commitment that all students can find their voice.

COLLEGE FOR SCHOOL CULTURE LEADERSHIP

David steered the graduate program from its opening and achieved many important milestones. He hired the program’s faculty and recruited and enrolled the first cohorts of students. David drove the transition of the program from a vision and a plan, to the commencement of classes, safely welcoming students and faculty to campus during a challenging pandemic, and then on to our first graduation of students. We are grateful for David, who dedicated his leadership, creative design, and unwavering sense of humor to the launch and growth of our innovative College for School Culture.

In July 2022, we welcomed Dr. Katie Morrison to the role of Dean of the UCDS Graduate School.

UCDS INSTITUTE

This year the UCDS Institute welcomed two new Institute directors, Kristi Grouws and Lily Wei, to begin in the 2022-2023 school year. Working collaboratively, the duo will guide the UCDS Institute in restoring programming and exploring new opportunities to SHAPE education in alignment with its mission:

The Institute is designed to advance our innovative educational model.

DEPARTING TRUSTEE TRIBUTE

Will Kiefer

Under the best circumstances, the UCDS Board of Trustees is entrusted with advancing the school’s strategic vision. The Board Chair, together with the Head of School, is at the helm. During his tenure as Chair, Will Kiefer acted above and beyond the normal scope of the job by shepherding the UCDS community through the incredible impact of the worldwide COVID pandemic. Will Kiefer was a partner and a sounding board from the mandated closure of our campus in March 2020, throughout the summer, and beyond. He kept the Board fully informed as the school redesigned every aspect of programming through the lens of a comprehensive health and safety plan as testing and vaccinations became available. Will’s uncanny ability to look ahead and anticipate roadblocks, reframe any concerns, and put them in perspective resulted in our safe re-opening. Concurrently, Will’s ability to see all sides of an issue and suggest a course of action with good humor allowed the school to achieve its annual goals. Will remained on the Board as Vice Chair in 2021-2022 to support the school’s emergence into a new, post-pandemic reality. The UCDS community is forever grateful for his brilliant leadership.
