Daniel Descalso Aggie and World Champion A 2007 All-West Region and All-Big West Conference selection, Daniel Descalso became the first UC Davis position player to reach the major leagues. He made his MLB debut on September 18, 2010, becoming the second Aggie to make the big club. He joined pitcher Steve Brown, who made 15 pitching appearances for the California Angels from 1983-84. In 2011, Descalso made the Cardinals’ 25-man roster, playing in 148 games and batting .264 for the season. On May 3 against the Florida Marlins, he hit his first major league home run against the F, a three-run shot that erased a late 5-4 deficit. Coincidentally, former Aggie infielder and current broadcaster Rich Waltz made the call for Descalso’s homer as the Fox Sports Florida play-by-play announcer for the visiting Marlins. Descalso’s late-game heroics continued into the Cardinals’ amazing postseason run. In Game 6 of the World Series, he ignited St. Louis’ rally with a leadoff single in the 10th inning. A San Carlos, Calif. native, Descalso starred for UC Davis from 2005-07. He batted .320 in his first year, becoming the first true freshman to lead the Aggies in hitting in 36 years. Descalso batted .397 as a junior, earning a selection as the 112th pick of the 2007 draft. He continues to rank fifth in school history in hits (210), seventh in doubles (42).
