Forward-thinking FaculT

TEJAY GURVIRENDER DBA FACULTY DIRECTOR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Driven by a desire to help make an impact in the rapidly-growing field of cybersecurity, Dr. Gurvirender Tejay has tirelessly worked to bring new programs and attract new funding to UCCS to benefit our region and nation with education professionals in the areas of the areas of information security, privacy and digital ethics. His focus on research is driving innovation at UCCS forward, as the University recently added an Executive Doctor of Business Administration in Cybersecurity Management. “There is an imperative need in industry and government for rigorously trained reflective thinkers at executive level who are able to grasp the technical and organizational challenges inherent in cybersecurity discipline.” Dr. Tejay’s commitment to ethics and fueling the future in the field of cyber is setting the stage for Colorado Springs to flourish as a hub for the field. He is striving to address the cybersecurity skills gap that the nation is currently facing. Dr. Tejay is instrumental in setting up the Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program to train over 5000 apprentices. He is also leading the coalition of 11 institutions to implement National Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Faculty Development initiative to train over 1500 faculty.

SEAN WILLIAMS DIRECTOR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION DESIGN COLLEGE OF LETTERS, ARTS AND SCIENCES A growing job field prompted Dr. Sean Williams to help form one of the few standalone Technical Communication and Information Design programs in the United States. He knew with thousands of unfilled positions in this discipline in the nation, students with this key skillset would be in high demand, and he would have the opportunity to prepare those students to be not just good at what they do, but also to do good in the world. “Technical communication as a field shares a lot of history with fields like rhetoric, ethics and philosophy. There is always an equity aspect to it, because when you talk about technology, someone – whether it’s the poor or those with lower levels of education – is always getting left out. Part of our job is to fix that.” Williams noted he takes pride in helping students learn to put people first in whatever they do, especially with the rapidly growing need for effective communication about technical topics. Williams said to do good in the world, his students must constantly assess and learn new technologies to meet communication goals.

PATTY WITKOWSKY ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND SAHE PROGRAM COORDINATOR; LEADERSHIP, RESEARCH, AND FOUNDATIONS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Success in higher education is a passion of Dr. Patty Witkowsky’s, who has focused her entire career on the experience of students and student affairs professionals in higher education. Witkowsky set her sights early on to improve the student experience from undergraduate to graduate levels, as well as ensure student affairs professionals, such as academic advisors, have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their mission of supporting students. “It’s my goal to for all students to maximize their educational experience to lead in their careers and communities. By increasing access to higher education to all who seek to develop their interpersonal and critical thinking skills, we can promote lifelong learning and contribute to preparing an educated citizenry.” Witkowsky’s approach allows her to both teach and conduct research simultaneously. She looks forward to grooming the next generation of educational leaders in the College of Education while partnering with graduate-level students and fellow faculty members on game-changing research opportunities.

DARSHIKA PERERA ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE After graduating with multiple degrees in the field of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Darshika Perera has racked up a handful of awards and recognized research in the field. A desire to innovate in the realms of mobile computing, including in embedded systems, drew Perera from the private sector into higher education, where she focuses on educating the next generation of computer engineers, as well as groundbreaking research. “My passion for teaching together with my heartfelt desire to do research is what persuaded me to return to academia. I am excited to teach, advise, and partner with students, as we watch the explosion of innovation in the field of electrical and computer engineering. We investigate unique embedded, digital, and reconfigurable computing solutions for portable devices.” Perera’s students are already changing the field. After graduation, many have found jobs utilizing their newfound skills with mobile technology in research labs and private companies. Perera is perhaps most excited to continue partnering with her students following graduation, as she furthers her own research.

ANDREW SUBUDHI CHAIR, PROFESSOR, HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY & NUTRITION HELEN AND ARTHUR E. JOHNSON BETH-EL COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES Dr. Andrew Subudhi grew up with the dream of becoming a professional athlete, but he quickly realized he would starve if he staked his livelihood on his athletic talent. This insight led him to pursue higher education, and eventually a Ph.D. that allowed him to work with professional and Olympic-level athletes. “Finding the connection between my passion and education felt like winning the lottery. At UCCS, I get to do things I’m really passionate about and I want to inspire students to find something they’re really passionate about, too. I believe the professors across campus feel the same way.” Today, Subudhi is fueled by a passion for the recently opened William J. Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center, which he described as an academic milestone that nobody else in the country can offer. The center is breaking ground by blending educational classrooms and labs alongside a working sports medicine clinic and performance center, which Subudhi said will lead to unparalleled opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.

CATHERINE SIMMONS

Impacting the lives of those who face challenges fuels Dr. Catherine Simmons’ love for social work, a profession and area of study she explored after she met a victim’s assistance social worker. From that day forward, onto her Ph.D., she’s loved everything about being a social worker. “ Our clients often meet us during the most difficult time of their lives, and we help them find solutions. We impact the lives of those who can’t always speak for themselves. Simply put, we help others. We change lives.” The mantra of helping others fits well within the School of Public Affairs, which launched the new Bachelor and Master of Social Work in 2020. Simmons said the School of Public Affairs excels at the whole of service, training leaders to serve the public.
