UC BASEBALL HISTORY 1900 • Miller Huggins, who would later play and mange in the majors for 30 seasons, serves as captain of a Bearcat team that went 2-3, including a 13-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Huggins was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 after winning 1,413 games as a manager.

1967 • For the second time in seven seasons, the Sample-led Bearcats win the MVC Championship and make another appearance in the district playoffs. During the season, Jose Worrall tosses the third no-hitter at UC with seven hitless innings against Ohio State. Pat Maginn garners second-team all-American accolades.

1910 • John Binder crafts the first no-hitter in Cincinnati history, blanking Denison in a nine-inning game.

1969 • UC takes the MVC East Division crown, before falling to Tulsa in two of three contests in the MVC playoffs.

1924 • Ethan Allen, who would go on to play for 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, bats .473, the highest single season mark in program history.

1970 • The Bearcats’ final year in the MVC brings a seventh divisional title, but a fifth runner-up finish as Tulsa sweeps UC.

1928 • The Bearcats record the first baseball conference championship in program history, using a 9-3 record to win the Buckeye Conference.

1973 • Tim Burman and Chuck Poston combine for a seven-inning no-hitter, the fourth hitless gem in school history, against Quinnipiac.

1930 • For the second time in three years, UC wins the Buckeye Conference, this time sharing the title with Miami (OH). Amidst the campaign, UC records the longest game in school history, a 21-inning affair against Miami (OH).

1974 • The Bearcats qualify for the district playoffs for the third time.

1952 • The Bearcats explode for a school-best 16 runs in one inning in a 22-8 win over Morehead State.

1982 • Mark Thompson’s seven-inning no-hitter against Wright State goes down as the fifth in program history.

1954 • Legendary basketball coach Ed Jucker takes over as head coach of the baseball team for his first of seven seasons. That same year, hall-of-famer Sandy Koufax plays his only season of baseball at Cincinnati, posting a 3-1 record and a 2.81 ERA.

1985 • Led by head coach Tom Higgins, the Bearcats win a then school-record 29 games.

1958 • The Jucker-led Bearcats win the East Division of the Missouri Valley Conference. 1960 • UC paces the East Division of the MVC again, but falls to Houston in the title game to wind up second in the league. 1961 • Glenn Sample, takes over the reigns of the Bearcats. In his first season, Sample leads UC to a 19-5-2 record, the MVC Championship and a District IV Playoffs appearance. Bill Faul becomes Cincinnati’s first baseball all-American, as he is named a first-team choice. Faul also sets a UC best with 24 strikeouts in one game. 1962 • Faul is honored as the Bearcats’ first ever two-time all-American when he earns third-team recognition. 1964 • The Bearcats turn the first triple play in school history in a game against Louisville. 1965 • Neil Rubinstein throws the second no-hitter in UC history, a seven-inning gem against Hanover. That same season, Billy Wolff is selected a first-team allAmerican. The Bearcats are MVC East Division Champions for the fourth time, but get swept by Saint Louis in the divisional playoffs.

1979 • Cincinnati wins what is then a school-record 28 games under Sample.

1987 • Jim Schmitz’s first season as head coach is a good one as the Bearcats win 31 games, setting a new mark for wins in a season. 1992 • The Bearcats move into a totally rebuilt Meyers Field to play their home games. 1994 • On May 22, Meyers Field is renamed Johnny Bench Field, honoring the former Cincinnati Reds catcher. 1995 • The Bearcats win a school-best 34 games and capture the Great Midwest Regular Season Championship. A 1-2 record in the post-season tournament costs the Bearcats a shot at an NCAA tournament berth. Also that season, Chris Murphy completes a five inning no-hitter versus IUPUI, the sixth hitless gem ever at Cincinnati. 1997 • Brian Cleary was hired as the 26th head coach of the Bearcats. 1999 • The Bearcats establish an NCAA record for greatest ninth inning comeback, scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 15-4 deficit in a 16-15 win against Ohio. Chris Hamblen becomes the first Bearcat ever to be named a freshman all-American. 2000 • Under third-year head coach Cleary, the Bearcats win a then schoolrecord 35 games, before falling in the finals of the Conference USA Tournament to Houston.
