Welcome ! Dear Readers This issue marks our ninth anniversary. We would not have lasted one year if you, our readers, together with our advertisers and diligent distributors had not supported us so brilliantly - so very sincere thanks to everyone. On a regular basis I help (with my OH) our team of delivers. Usually, this includes distributing to parts of Cold Ash. Over the years, we have increasingly come to look forward to this day, not least because, strange as it may seem, both my husband and I now feel we know many of your dear fourfour- footed friends! Indeed there is a resident in Slanting Hill whose black Labrador dog (with a distinguished - but very grey muzzle) we knew for many years . He is not there now and we suspect he has gone to that happy hunting ground in heaven. We do, however, still miss him - and always glance at the spot where one of our favourite woofers frequented! On a more professional note it is very good to welcome Nicola Gibbs, who is a qualified acupuncturist and working at Bernies in Midgham. I have a strong feeling she will help many readers in the future and I look forward to hearing about her forthcoming successes. All best wishes for a happy Summer. In this issue you will find several interesting activities to take part in. Those of you who have children may be interested in events on pages 36&37. Also, there is the joy of Wimbledon ahead for those tennis fans who enjoy watching the game (and perhaps like me, take far too much time off to enjoy it!) You could perhaps join Thatcham Tennis Club?

Gardner Leader When a Will goes wrong local probate amended.

have

the

Will

However, if any party affected by the Will disagrees over the error then the matter has to go to the High Court, which can be a lengthy and costly procedure. In some cases, parties involved may have to give evidence. The good news is that the law around what constitutes as a 'clerical error' is widening, increasing the chances of a Will withstanding and the testator's wishes being carried out.

Having a Will is fairly commonplace especially as we see extended and more complex family units. But what happens if the Will of a deceased loved one turns out to be incorrect? What if it contains a typo, incorrect information or you believe that the testator’s instructions have been misunderstood? The first thing to establish is whether it is a matter that can be 'rectified.' If not the gift or even the whole Will may be invalid meaning that, if there is no previous Will then the deceased's estate may fall into intestacy where other family members or even the Crown could benefit. For a Will to be rectified it must either, fail to carry out the testator's intentions as a result of either a clerical error or the drafter of the Will has failed to understand the testator's instructions.

For example, the signing of the wrong Will (Marley -v- Rawlings, 2012) and the wrong template being used in a Will (Brooke v Purton & Ors, 2014) were considered by the Court as clerical errors, allowing the Court to amend the Will and carry out the testators' intentions. The case Brooke v Purton & Ors, where I represented the claimants, was reported in the Law Reports for future cases to refer to; demonstrating how the Courts are encouraging a more flexible and common sense approach to the rectification of Wills. The desire for the Court to uphold the testator's intentions behind the Will and avoid unjust and unintended outcomes is evident however, it is still too early to say whether the Court will assist in upholding invalid Wills in every situation. Rather, it will continue to consider each case on its merits. The best solution, if you're affected by an error in a Will, is to apply to the Probate Registry for rectification. If you need expert legal advice then seek this swiftly as you have six months from the grant of probate to make an application. And, most importantly, if you're making a Will check it and triple check it yourself to ensure it is 100% correct. By Tara McInnes, Associate solicitor in the Dispute Resolution team at Gardner Leader law firm. For further details and advice please contact Gardner Leader on 01635 508080 or visit www.gardner-leader.co.uk.

If it is an error that can be amended and all parties affected by the Will agree then it's simply a matter of applying to the . ursula@thatchamconnections.co.uk 0118 9886070

How Daddy is Doing With Fathers’ Day just around the corner we thought we’d put together a collection of books about dads and their offspring. Whether they’re doting or disastrous, destructive or departed, this is a day for celebrating the role of these most influential of men. The Road - Cormac McCarthy Although this book is set in a post-apocalyptic world and is, quite frankly, a bit terrifying, it’s a fantastic tale of a man who’ll do anything to protect his boy. Together they walk through the battered remnants of America, heading to the coast and hoping for salvation, with only each other to rely on. The landscape is brutal, chilling and ash-ridden and father and son must find food and shelter where they can, away from the dangers that lie in wait. Often described as a masterpiece, Cormac McCarthy’s novel is haunting and yet reassuring that the bond between parent and child can withstand anything. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee Show me the person who wouldn’t want Atticus Finch as their father-figure. Atticus is an attorney and is often hailed as being the personification of all that is moral and just. He’s adored by his two children, Scout and Jem who try to make sense of the happenings in the sleepy southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus must face the disapproving eyes of the town’s residents as he defends Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Scout and her brother Jem aren’t allowed into the courtroom but they sneak in and hide out on the ‘coloured balcony’ to watch their father in action, and the trial that will change Maycomb forever.

Danny the Champion of the World - Roald Dahl ‘The most marvellous and exciting father a boy ever had’you can’t do much better than that accolade. Nine year old Danny idolises his father and adores hearing his fantastic stories and tales of daring-do. Danny’s seemingly simple existence is his own personal bliss: growing up in a traveller’s caravan and tinkering with cars in his spare time. Then his dad comes up with a master plan in the form of a pheasant-snatching adventure and Danny’s world becomes that much more exciting. Roald Dahl’s story of a boy and his love and admiration for his dad is so heart-warming, you’ll want to start finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and realise that you too, can be the champion of the world. Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller There’s no way that Willy Loman is winning any Father of the Year prizes anytime soon and yet his son Happy is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. His other son, Biff has more of the measure of the man having once caught his father in a compromising situation. Whatever the drop-out Biff and the hapless Happy decide to do with their lives, Loman himself is all washed up as a salesman and facing a precipice. Arthur Miller’s play is set using a series of flashbacks as we watch this family and their own American Dream vaporise before our very

Please mention Thatcham Connections when responding to advertisements.

eyes. Loman commits one final act of desperation for his sons, and the reader is left to decide whether or not he was heroic in the end. And When Did You Last See Your Father? - Blake Morrison In his memoirs, the author recounts his relationship with his own father, throughout his dad’s life and after his death. It raises questions as to whether or not we ever see our parents as adults in their own right, or simply as our parents. How do we deal with family secrets and is it destructive to reveal them? Do we ever really get to know our parents and how they view the world? It might be time to put the kettle on, call the folks and see if there are any skeletons in the closet. Darth Vader and Son - Jeffrey Brown A bit of light relief comes in the form of Jeffrey Brown’s ponderings over Darth Vader’s propensity for fatherhood. What if Vader uttering the immortal words, “Luke, I am your father” opened the floodgates for some father-son bonding and making up for lost time across the galaxies. What if he was completely misinterpreted and it was a just a stern telling off from daddy? Brown’s comic illustrations reveal life as it could have been if he and Luke had been able to build a relationship and end up as allies rather than enemies, revealing what a hands-on dad Lord Vader could really have been.

Feel GREAT this Summer and enhance your overall Well Being Have you wondered about various complimentary therapies which are available. IfIfso, available? so,do do read readon onand and consider if you too could be helped. So here is the lowlow-down on some of them and the kinds of conditions they can help. To be on the safe side, do pleased consult your GP about it first .

Acupuncture Acupuncture uses the insertion of fine needles into particular points in the skin. Where the needles are placed will depend on your condition. Acupuncturists believe that stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of Qi or energy. (See also Traditional Chinese Medicine below)

Homeopathy Naturopathy uses a combination of natural therapies to help the body to heal itself. Therapies include diet, hydrotherapy, osteopathy, herbalism, homeopathy and exercise, which can all help the body to cleans itself of toxins and alleviate stress. Good for: chronic and acute conditions, such as digestive problems, chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, anxiety.

Osteopathy

Good for: It is used across a wide range of ailments; people have it to help them quit smoking, combat insomnia, reduce stress and anxiety, to support recovery from injury or surgery, to relieve pain and symptoms associated with auto-problems like osteoarthritis and auto immune diseases.

Osteopathy is almost considered mainstream these days and you can often be treated on the NHS. Working on the bones, joints and muscles, osteopathy uses manipulation, message and light movements to holistically re-balance physical, mental and emotional problems. Good for :

Chiropractic Chiropractors work to correct dysfunction in the joints and muscles and work particularly on the spinal column, where problems such as neck and back pain can originate. Through manual treatments, such as spinal manipulation and adjustment, it can treat and help to prevent mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Good for: Headaches, lower back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome,; scoliosis, stress

back pain, pregnancypregnancy-related problems, sports injuries.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) TCM works on the belief that illness is caused by disharmony (or dis-ease) in the body due to an imbalance of the flow of Qi or energy. Qi is made up of two forces, yin and yang and when one of these forces dominates then illness occurs. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, Qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked which can result in symptoms of some pain

ursula@thatchamconnections.co.uk 0118 9886070

and illness or disease. Treatment is aimed at the root cause of the condition as well as the main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving the problem and enhancing overall well-being. A combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture is usually used. Good for: asthma and chest conditions, skin conditions such eczema and rosacea.

What to expect from a consultation. During the first consultation with your therapist you will be asked about your overall health, not just about your particular condition. This is because complementary therapists look at the body as a whole, not just one part of it. Expect to answer questions about your habits, diet, medical background and family health, as your therapist will need a full picture before they can decide on how to treat you. Please have a good look through this issue as you will see there are people ‘out there’ who could well make quite a difference to your life. (I know as I speak from experience!) Ed.

We hope that Team Rangers will be inspired to look at the countryside as an active and dynamic place where there are opportunities to do positive and fulfilling tasks whilst having fun at the same time. MARK THOMAS: W ORK

IN P ROGRESS N EW G REENHAM A RTS BERKSHIRE R G19 6 HN

This is a true story. Ten years ago an activist and close friend of Mark's was exposed as a spy for BAE Systems infiltrating the movement. Now Mark wants to find him and has some questions to ask. The show carries on where ‘Bravo Figaro’ left off, in style using interviews from friends, colleagues, activists and journalists to examine the impact of betrayal. Plenty of laughs, some weird characters, probably a tear or two and the vague possibility that Mark might get beaten up, as he tries to find out if he wants revenge or if he can forgive. £10. … … … … …… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … . . Despair over drinking game Leads to “random kindness to strangers”! Simon de Bruxelles They are the random acts of kindness that make life more bearable: an unsolicited coffee for a homeless person, a compliment to a stranger or a helping hand with a difficult chore. Luke Cameron’s random acts of kindness began with his despair at the popularity of the internet drinking game Neknominate, in which players name friends who are then expected to film themselves drinking large quan es of spirits and post the results on line. Mr Cameron decided to subvert the craze, which has claimed a number of lives, by inven ng Raknominate, in which friends are asked to perform a ‘random act of kindness’ and then nominate someone else to do the same.

Buying a New Car The average householder doesn’t usually have enough spare cash to enable them to walk into a car showroom and make an outright purchase. Yet as current figures are showing healthy growth in the new car sales market, it’s clear that the money is being raised one way or another. In fact over the last 12 months the number of vehicles obtained using a finance arrangement has risen by 27%, whereas the number bought outright was below 15%. Information from the Finance & Leasing Association puts this trend down to the postrecession realisation that we have to stick within our budgets and manage our cash flow. As the majority of finance deals come with fixed interest rates, new car owners know exactly what their monthly/weekly repayment costs will be for the lifetime of the arrangement. But there are many finance options available and many terms to understand and this can be pretty confusing for a prospective buyer. Not just monthly payments There is much to consider when looking into a finance plan, and a low monthly repayment alone is not enough information on which to base your decision. For

example, many finance agreements have a mileage limitation, with penalties for going over this. Some manufacturers will charge more than others but the average pricing is between 5p and 20p for every mile you exceed. You would probably be surprised at just how many miles you do so it’s important to be realistic – you don’t want to find yourself in the position of avoiding using your vehicle for the last few months of your agreement, just to avoid the penalty. Contracts Bank loan: You can seek a loan agreement from your bank for the purchase of a vehicle, which will give you the sum outright. If you are successful then the car will be your own and it will be the bank you owe the money to. Your success in securing personal finance will depend on your credit rating, employment status and ability to prove you can repay the money. As with all loan

agreements it is important to look for any small print, and to check you aren’t signing up for payment protection insurance (PPI) unless you want it. Hire Purchase (HP): (HP You will usually have to put down a deposit and then you will the balance in instalments over 12 – 60 months. Because you are repaying the full value of the car, the monthly payments can be high, especially if your deposit was small. Although this sounds similar to a bank loan, the dealer will usually organise hire purchase for you which can make it less hassle. Be warned though that you will not own the car until the final payment, so the vehicle can be repossessed if you don’t keep up with the repayments. On the other hand, as this gives the finance company some security, it can be easier to get a hire purchase Continued on page 61

(PCP): This is a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) variation of hire purchase but rather than paying for the car in full, you agree to pay the difference between the sale price and the estimated value at the end of the agreement period. This will usually mean the monthly payments are lower. At the end of the agreement you have three choices: just hand the car back; trade-in using the residual value as a deposit on a new model or pay the final value in full (a ‘balloon’ payment) and keep the vehicle. You could of course look at taking out a bank loan to meet the balloon payment. Personal Leasing: Leasing Essentially you are just hiring the car for the duration will agree a limited mileage. At the end of the agreement, you hand the car back - it never belongs to you. Be aware though that as with any hire car, if you send the vehicle back with a scratch, a dent, or damaged upholstery, there are likely to be penalties to pay. Credit rating Your credit rating will always be checked for any loan, hire purchase or finance arrangement and those with poor credit may either be refused finance or will find themselves paying a higher interest rate. For example, on a car finance agreement with no deposit and a duration of 60 months with a car value of £5,000, someone with an Excellent Credit Rating will pay £5748.75; change the buyer to one with a Poor Credit Rating and they could pay up to £9248.75 for the same vehicle. Who to use When looking into where to obtain a finance agreement, using a company with a car showroom and brand name will give you more protection than a private person or an internet agency. In the former case the contract will be two sided whereas less scrupulous companies can apply fees, charges and new rules and regulations throughout the agreement and, as this will have been a private transaction, it is unlikely you will be able to do much about it.
