Dear Readers Welcome to issue 34. This is our first issue in the New Year - so may I wish you all a Very Happy 2012. I do hope the return to normal routine after the Christmas break has not been too much of a shock! It is quite a dreary time of year I find - but it certainly has not been so cold as yet (at least at the time of writing this). Whilst we all know that for many of us there is a fair amount of adversity and austerity in our lives at present, on the other side of the coin, there are those who are experiencing good and positive times. I am hoping to run a free page on the latter. We need to hear their stories. We need to be uplifted. Please let me know if you would like to suggest someone - perhaps a young person who is at uni or college happily studying with excellent support and help - and the future is looking bright - or it could be an elderly person who is encountering particular love, care and encouragement. Whatever you think might be appropriate, please share it. Just email or ring me - and if I can - I will be pleased to write the page and print it free. May I also remind you, please, to continue utilising and supporting local trades and services advertising in Thatcham Connections. In addition, If you remember to mention Thatcham Connections when calling any advertisers, this will help ensure that the magazine will continue to be published. I am always keen to hear about upcoming events. Often there is space available to make a mention of them, so again please let me know. Warmest Regards

P.S A little update: starting at the head of the household, DH (darling husband) before Christmas encountered a few extra aches and pains The doctor told him he had to have at least a month of rest, with no golf, but now fortunately (for everyone!) he is back on the Course and feeling much better. DD is excited and very busy getting ready for her wedding in the Spring. (Just booked Bernie today to do her hair and Janie Perry to de-stress me!) DS is preparing to go out to Qatar - a new job awaits him there (Still a long way from home but closer than Afghanistan) - thank goodness for email.

Gardner Leader NHS Continuing Health Care

someone who is nearing the end of their life

individuals with a condition that is rapidly getting worse and may be terminal.

Eligibility for NHS Continuing Health Care does not depend on a specific health condition, illness or diagnosis or who provides the care, or where the care is provided. Therefore, to ascertain if your mother would qualify she will need to be assessed by the local Primary Care Trust. Her GP will be able to put you in touch with them. My mother has already been means tested by Social Services, is this a different assessment? Yes, it is a completely separate assessment and can be carried out at any time.

Lucy Samara, Solicitor, at Gardner Leader explains the common scenario faced by many families regarding care for the elderly and advises how you can best deal with the situation, making use of an available funding. My mother is very ill in a nursing home; she owns her own property and has savings. My mother is adamant that she doesn’t want her assets to be used to fund care home fees. Is there any way that the NHS can pay for her care? The NHS do offer a complete package of care, which is arranged and funded by the NHS to meet physical and or mental health needs that have arisen due to ill health. This is known as NHS Continuing Health Care. How do you qualify for this funding? Not everyone will qualify for NHS Continuing Health Care. To be eligible your main or primary need for care must relate to your health. The most common examples of people who are most likely to be eligible are:

those who have a complex medical condition that requires a lot of care and support and/or needs highly specialised nursing support

My mother has been in the nursing home for a period of time and has been paying for her care, does that matter? No, you can request for an assessment to be carried out at any time. If the assessment is successful and your mother is entitled to receive the funding the NHS can repay any overpaid care fees, i.e. from the date on which your mother would have qualified if assessed earlier. What happens if my mother does not qualify, or, I am not happy with the results of the assessment? If you can bring a copy of the assessment to me, we can go through it together. If you are not in agreement with the assessment, you are able to challenge the decision. If your mother does not qualify for NHS Continuing Health Care then she will be means tested by Social Services to determine how much of her assets will be used to fund care home fees. In either case I would strongly advise you to seek legal advice; there are other ways that we can help to protect your mother’s assets against care home fees. For more information regarding this article or how Gardner Leader can assist you, please contact Lucy Samara on 01635 508080.

Many local people will recognise the familiar face of Joe Curran opposite. Jo has been running Geoffrey Church & Co in Thatcham for 25 years. The Thatcham Branch was created in 1986 when a distinctive need for the people of Thatcham, to have their very own service, was recognised. Many people, often in distress, have turned to Joe or a member of his team for help. It is no surprise as the office, tucked round the corner from The Broadway has a considerate and caring atmosphere and the door is purposely kept ajar for people to come in at any time during office hours, to receive people and to discuss their requirements.

Winter Perfume Plants - By Pippa Greenwood

Garden Feature

There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual oriental-looking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset - sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi

-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel - for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loamfree multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down.

Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eyecatching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place - once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small white-cream flowers which produce a

tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try. First Love February They say you never forget your first love. Spoiling us for future relationships, the flame burns intensely but is often shortlived. It can be overwhelming, all-consuming and breathtakingly exciting. Surely it’s got to be downhill after that. We may be long past the first flourish of teenage hearttrembling, but this Valentine’s Day, why not rekindle the old flame and fall in love for the first time, all over again. Twilight. Stephenie Meyer I gave this book to my partner to read. He was, understandably, incredibly cynical about the teenage love -story but I can honestly say that from the first page, he was hooked. This masterful tale of forbidden love between a vampire and a human, takes you on a bloodpumping and heartfluttering journey of yearning and lust. Set deep within the misty and brooding Pacific Northwest coast of America it’s sure to warm the cockles of even a vampire’s icecold heart. The Reader. Bernhard Schlink Set against a backdrop of post-war Germany, this love story asks how

generations have come to terms with what happened during the Holocaust. The novel opens with a fifteen year old Michael Berg falling for the much older and more experienced Hanna Schmitz. Hanna is illiterate and

Mag 34.pub page 40

after a chance meeting with Berg, he begins to read novels aloud to her and their relationship begins to blossom. The story is written in three parts, charting Michael’s life. It’s a complex tale of first love, realisations about the world and coming to terms with a history that irrevocably shaped Germany’s present and future. It’s thoughtprovoking and truly heartbreaking. Angus, Thongs and FullFull-Frontal Snogging. Louise Rennison Louise Rennison’s hugely popular comic novel is the first in the series about lovelorn teenager, Georgia Nicholson. It follows the trials and tribulations of Georgia and her best friend Jas, who form part of the Ace Gang. It’s packed with sleepovers and family life, along with heartstopping and lifealtering crushes on the object of her affection, ‘Sex God Robbie’. How do you cope when the boy of your dreams

winds up with one of the ‘wet weeds’ instead of living happily ever after with you? The original Bridget Jones in a training bra, Georgia’s diary charts her path from girl to woman…and every step in-between. One Day. David Nicholls Everybody who went to university in the eighties will both weep uncontrollably and laugh out loud at the nostalgia that One Day exudes. Published in 2009, it follows the twenty year courtship of Emma and Dex, catching up with them on the same day, the 15th of July, St Swithin’s Day. One Day is filled with humour and wonderfully rounded, yet beautifully flawed characters you’re bound to fall in love with. Beginning as the two protagonists leave university and embark on their journey into the great wide world, fate soon overcomes youthful enthusiasm and aspiration. How long do we hold onto first loves, dream careers and a notion of happily-ever-after?

‘For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo’. Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare We know it’s going to end badly from the start, and yet we can’t get enough of the Bard’s starcrossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. It’s got everything; romance, comedy, drama, feuding families and an apothecary. There have been many adaptations, film versions and take -offs but why not settle down with Shakespeare’s original play and let the whirlwind romance sweep you off your feet.

Blue Heart Cermanics Midgham Village Hall about 3-4 times a year.

New Year New Beginnings In November 2011, Claire Norris, of Just Shabby Chic and Theresa Wright of Blue Heart Ceramics hosted a two day event at Midgham Village Hall. It was a great success. Claire and Theresa have now decided to host a similar event on : Saturday 11th February 2012. They both realise that there is a call for unique, affordable and unusual home wares and are seeking to hold events in

On Saturday 11th February there will also be home made cushions, candles - and an expanded range of shabby chic ware as well as new designs and pieces from Blue Heart Ceramics. Put the date in your diary now and come down to the Village Hall for a cup of tea or coffee, a homemade biscuit and browse round an exciting range of decorative and functional items for your home. Claire and Theresa are interested to know of any other innovative local craft workers whose products would fit their remit. Please contact Claire Norris by email at : claire.eventive@btconnect.com or theresa@blueheartceramics.com.

Fields and Woodland at Jubilee Day Nursery JUBILEE DAY Separate pdf

It’s story time! This means a host of exciting learning experiences for all the babies and children at Jubilee Day Nursery. From one to one stories, to a group going on a bear hunt through our fields and woodland to find the bear hiding in a den. When Julia Donaldson - a leading children’s author - was recently appointed ‘Children’s Laureate’, she announced her aim to promote projects to link drama and music to stories. At Jubilee Day Nursery we are delighted as our philosophy is to bring stories alive. Closely linked to the E.Y.F.S, children enjoy listening to traditional loved stories such as

‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ or ‘The Enormous Turnip’. They dress up and act out the stories in their own animated way. Both inside and outside, these activities provides children with a wealth of learning opportunities, including communication, expressive language, counting and knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Practitioners at Jubilee Day Nursery actively encourage children to develop and extend their stories. This begins by selecting a book from our library or from the mobile library (which visits the nursery on a regular basis). This enables children to be placed at the centre of their learning. They begin to plan, make and work together to create their own interpretation of a chosen story. We then extend this with walking to the woods to collect leaves and fir cones for ‘Percy the Park Keeper’, or to recycle their milk cartons from home to build an igloo for ‘Miki’, or visiting the pigs and goats in the paddocks after reading ‘The three little pigs’ or ‘Billy goat gruff’. The children talk animatedly on their return journey from the woods and farm lands, their conversations continuing on their way home and even till bed time.

If you would like your child to be part of this amazing learning adventure or need more information, then please do not hesitate in contacting our Nursery Manager, Lesley Thompson on 01189701600 or visit our website: www.jubileedaynursery.co.uk
